Topical ethnography at its best
I stumbled across this book while researching the Makah Whaling controversy. It has one page on the Makah and whaling, offering comparative perspectives on a story set further north. While the Makah are trying to revive a tradition of whaling that ceased more than sixty years ago, Inuit peoples across the Arctic are struggling to maintain their way of life. The hurdles they must overcome to continue on their way include a declining resource base that results from an extraction-based economy, and the environmentalist opponents of these extractive industries who want to "save the whales". This book is the story of the Inuit and whaling told in their words. The authors include an international interdisciplinary team brought together by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference.

This book is ground-breaking ethnography that is put together by the people it is about. It is presented for the purpose of opening dialogue with those in far away places whose political priorities have consequences for Inuit peoples. It is a story of a region that spans three continents, and which is of growing importance to those of us who live in the south. No one interested in economic development of natural resources, whatever the point of view, can afford to ignore this book.

Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci: Scale Architectual Paper Model

Great Fun and Very Educational!
This is just plain fun. I kind of expected it to be die-cut, punch out kind of stuff, but it was actually something of challenge. That's fine by me because I build paper models as a hobby. I guess the scissors across the front cover should've been a clue.

The finished products look great on your desk and the screened color and detail look quite realistic.

My only gripe with this excellent piece is that it doesn't include Leo's most intriguing work, his winged flying machine!

Well worth the Wait
Mr Kipling has always been a favorite author of mine. My intense intrest in English and specifically Irish, Scots and Welsh military history led me to reading both volumes on the 1st and 2d Battalions of the Irish Guards. Mr. Kipling's history of the Irish Guards is a spectacular book set that unflinchingly describes the sacrifices of the men of the Regiment (and that generation) that willing sacrificed themselves for their comrades on the Fields of France. For those intrested, I highly recommend another great book entitled, Ireland's Forgotten Soldiers. It details the establishment and battles that the 16th Irish Division participated in and the Redmond Volunteers in the Great War.

IRONS: NUMERICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE - NUMBERS ARE FUN (PAPER)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Europe (a Pearson Education company) (18 February, 1987)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A superb book - consise and informative.
Bruce Irons' fascination with the application of computers to the to the solution of engineering problems is clearly evident in this publication. He demonstrates a deep understanding of numerical analysis and its application in engineering and applied science.

His had a rare combination of an excellent understanding of engineering analysis, rigorous programming skills and superb teaching ability. This comes through delightfully in this book, which should be a compulsory purchase for all engineering and applied science undergraduate students.

The book is aimed particularly at the "curious and thinking" student. Its relative brevity lends itself to be read quickly for a broad overview of the topic, but because of its conciseness, further readings are required to pick out the hidden subtleties of numerical analysis. The importance of fully understanding the nature and form of the engineering problem being solved is emphasised throughout the book, as is the importance of recognising the limitation of approximate numerical solutions. This awareness of the erroneous errors possible with the misapplication of numerical techniques is referred to again and again.

Finally, this book could also be read by the more "mature" researcher if only to remember that the primary reason she/he chose a career in problem solving is that "numbers are (and can still be) fun"
