Footloose (Studies in Austrian Literature, Culture, and Thought. Translation Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Ariadne Pr (August, 1999)
Authors: Gernot Wolfgruber and Robert Acker
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

An impressive, highly recommended novel.
Translated from German for an American readership, Gernot Wolfgruber's Footloose is a gripping first-person narrative of a teenage boy and his experiences growing up in postwar Austria.. Leaving school for the excitement of earning money as an apprentice, he soon experiences the grueling monotony of his work and the harsh treatment of his superiors. His painful search fr individuality, freedom, and meaning employment, along with the unpleasant concomitant consequences contain striking parallels to contemporary American experience in the blue collar working world. Superbly translated by Robert Acker, Footloose is an impressive, highly recommended novel that, first published in Europe in 1975, reads with a current accessibility that will be much appreciated by readers today.

Very Useful Resource
I first discovered this book when one of my history professors recommended it. Now, I always keep it nearby when I write. It gives directions for writing great papers and contains the latest citation information for the Chicago, MLA, and APA styles (different teachers often prefer different styles). Also, Slade gives the information in a concise manner (only 297 full size pages). Because of this, I highly recommend it for those who write research papers frequently, especially college students. Here is a chapter summary:

1) Writing a Research Paper: This section explains the basics of writing a research paper and is very useful to the novice. It deals with choosing a topic, preparing a bibliography, library research techniques, organizing the paper, writing drafts, and proofreading. This chapter also includes sample research pages.

2) Elements of Theses and Dissertations: Slade tells how to write abstracts, make title pages, organize chapters, and arrange reference materials. This section also includes sample pages.

3) Quotations: This part teaches the reader how to use direct and indirect quotations, as well as proper punctuation and capitalization. She also gives examples from the 3 major styles.

4) Style and Mechanics: Slade explains in detail the style (e.g. diction, tense, unbiased language) and mechanics (e.g. spelling, italics, hyphenation) of a good paper.

5) Tables, Figures, and Computer Materials: This chapter demonstrates proper usage and placement of figures and tables (including those generated by computer). Sample figures are provided.

6) The Finished Copy: Slade recaps previous chapters, explains about equipment and supplies (e.g. paper quality) and gives typing and printing instructions.

7) Chicago Manual Style: This section explains how to do endnotes, footnotes, and bibliographies in this style. There are examples from all types of sources (books, periodicals, etc.). She even includes electronic and web sources.

8) MLA Style: Slade explains how to cite works in the text and properly create a bibliography in the MLA style. As with the Chicago, she gives examples from many types of sources, including the internet.

9) American Psychological Association Style: This section demonstrates how to cite sources in the text and the bibliography according to the APA guidelines. It too explains how to cite many types of sources, including internet and electronic.

There is an appendix that includes legal citations and state abbreviations, a glossary of terms, and an index.

Hard to find. . . .
Right now, Amazon and competitors are only able to get this book through used channels, but it is worth it. This book got me through college and every department wanting a different citation style. It is spiral bound, lays flat and includes the three major styles: MLA, APA and Chicago (aka Turabian). If you need a reference guide for writing papers, this is the best i've seen.

Formal Ontology in Information Systems: Collected Papers from the Second International Conference October 17Th-19th, 2001 the Cliff House on Bald Head Cliff Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean og

The best book on ontology - ever
With the promise of the impending, "Semantic Web", the word "ontology" has been bandied about quite a bit by people who really have no idea what it means. The dictionary is of no help here, as it typically defines ontology as something like, "a theory of being". For those who know, and more importantly for those who *think* they know, the word has experienced a bizarre duality and evolution of meaning as the progenators of web-based information system have used and abused the term. This book contains a collection of articles by experts - scholars and practitioners in philosophy, linguistics and computer science - that address the real meaning of ontology, what it means to specify and use ontologies, the promise of ontology-enabled information interchange, and the influence 2000 years of analytic metaphysics can have on real world engineering problems.

This book is quite unique in that the collection of authors, such as Barry Smith, Sergei Nirenburg, and Nicola Guarino, to name but a few, run the gamut from philosophers to engineers; such a diverse collection of researchers are rarely seen together, and the mix yields a fascinating range of ideas.

Fantastic, a true recollection.
As a direct descendant, I can vouch for the accuracy and effectiveness of this volume. I hold the first copies of the originals of these works and the originals were donated by my family to Craigavon Museum Service. This is a fantastic work, a must.

The best one!
I've received the book yesterday. It is not the first related to Fountain Pens that I see, but this one is really nice. It is not written as the others but as a review of the history and the kind of pens. I've read almost a half of it last night!

Francis Bacon: Working On Paper

Secret Vices
This short book served as a catalogue for an exhibition at the Tate in London in 1999 and is one of the more sensitive explorations into Francis Bacon's artistic thoughts. Though known to approach unfixed canvas (in his much talked about trashy studio) with brush and paint and palette knife in hand and attack his story until it was complete, Bacon actually spent a considerable amount of time sketching ideas which often became his huge scaled painting. David Sylvester opens this Pandora's box with a pithy introduction and Matthew Gale presents a sophisticated, scholarly examination of this heretofore unknown aspect of Francis Bacon. The plates of the sketches, all included in the atalogue, prove startling even to the most ardent Baconophile. This is a treasure chest of nascent thought and aborted ideas.....and makes for splendid reading.

Excellent book for serious art quilters!
If you're the kind of quilter that takes a design and looks for ways to implement it - this book is for you. Although it has a lot of design ideas and inspirations, it's main objective is to teach the reader/quilter techniques to achieve the designs we dream of. I bought it a trifle too late - when I was half way through a major quilt commision in which I needed exactly the techniques described in the book and found that I successfully reinvented the wheel. Still, it helped me a lot. Some of the techniques (especially for curved piecing) could be simplified - from experience. Otherwise, don't hesitate buying it. Pity it is out of print.

Very accurately depicted
The paper dolls in this particular book are the most accurately depicted by using the descriptions of the people of the french royal court from the book that Marie-Antoinette had written
