MacCannell, erudite and angry, chronicles postmodern decayDean McCannell, an angry academic, takes on the pervasive rot around us in a fascinating collection of essays. The appropriation and conversion of cultural and material goods into commodities is a process that MacCannell calls by its correct name--cannibalism. The historically recent assimilation of all available cultural and material goods into a monolithic system has created a monstrous world order which provides no alternatives to itself.
These passionate essays reward many readings. I do not feel I exaggerate when I call this a great and indispensible book.

Venturing far beyond traditional origami, this "encyclopedia" offers a full scope of ideas for this versatile medium. Part One explains step-by-step techniques for origami, pop-ups, paper sculpture, papier-mâché, papermaking, decoupage, model making, quilling, and weaving. Part Two is a gallery of spectacular artwork by a multitude of paper artists employing various techniques, from complicated origami animals to elaborate woven shapes to intricate cut-paper "paintings" to room-size paper architecture bordering on sculptural furniture. A beginner should achieve some degree of success with the majority of the techniques, though many appear to require practice before the elaborate level of artistry evident in the beautiful color photos can be reached. Still, just browsing through the artists' gallery should prove inspirational.

Fantastic Way to Learn the Most Wonderful Areas of OragamiMost faboulus for the beginner, although anyone can use it as a reference book. It teaches many ways to create homemade paper and my favorite were the boxes. I give it two thumbs up.

A unique work which is balanced and very well doneI have been interested in the Christian experience and understanding of God for many years now, and this is the best book I have found concerning the differences in trinitarian theology between Eastern Orthodox and Western Christians(both Roman and Protestant). I know that my statement is flawed if it's taken to mean that books alone (sola libre!), and not prayer, eucharist, love, and faith, etc, are needed to encounter the Trinity, so don't take it that way. But on an intellectual level, surely this book helps in may ways. I'll quote the jacket:
"This book examines twentieth century theological commentators (Barth, Rahner, Lossky, Florovsky) on the problem of the doctrine of the energies of God. Counter to existing trends in western theology, the author gives a positive evaluation of this doctrine and seeks common ground between the eastern idea of essence and energies and the western idea of the inner and economic Trinity. Though written from a clearly western perspective, the book argues the coherence of the eastern position, and that underlying both eastern and western positions is a common intention to say that the encounter with God is real, and that the primary ontological distinction is between God and creation."
This is worth the time to read over and over. Other books of interest will include reading the primary sources for Reid's critique. Brath's "Church Dogmatics", Rahner's "The Trinity", Lossky's "Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church", "The Vision of God", "In the Image and Likeness of God", and "Orthodox Theology". All of Florovsky's works are foundational, but most, if not all, are out of print. The works of Saint Gregory Palamas are available in translation and commentary in many forms. I have used Meyendorff's two wroks, "Saint Gregory Palamas and Orthodox Spirituality" and "A Study of Gregory Palamas".
Some other books to check out are "The Mystery of the Trinity" by Boris Bobrinskoy, Studer's "Trinity and Incarnation", LaCugna's "God For Us", O'Collins' "The Tripersonal God", and Dimitru Staniloae's "The Experience of God". Enjoy!

Important New Book in Distributed Systems DevelopmentThis book covers an area of increasing importance, ie the design and implementation of modern distributed object systems. It combines details of the technologies, eg. CORBA and COM, with design notations and issues, eg. UML and scalability. As such, it fills a very important gap in the market and deserves to be successful. I know of no other book that tackes these issues in the same coherent manner.
I have been teaching these topics for the last three years on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and have had to use a variety of different literature resouces. This book now provides me with an excellent core text - well written and presented, with good explanations of complex issues.
Many thanks, Wolfgang. I can thoroughly recommend this book to teachers and researchers in this area.

Good, but...It is certainly a good intro to Thermodynamics book, but it'stoo skimpy for the money. At only 200 pages, it isn't a completetextbook on the subject, but noteworthy and significant nonetheless.

Wonderful Collection!It took me quite a while to find a good book containing either the Federalist or Anti-Federalist papers; all I could find were heavily edited (and biased) books with a poor collection.
However, this book ended the search. It contains the most important of both the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers, and it is much cheaper than most other type books; I really don't know why this book seems to be so overlooked.
If you are looking for the either the Federalist or Anti-Federalist papers, or want a better understanding of the political climate in which our constitution was written in, then be sure to pick up this book...

A psychology majorThis book is a collection of papers and monographs and is actually three books in one. The second book is an excellent discussion of theoretical psychoanalysis, particularly chapter 4 (in book two) on symbolism and chapter 5 (in book two) on illusion. This is a "must have" for any critical thinker in the field.

excellentBeing in the medical field, all too often I have heard the term "borderline" used to describe just about any patient who might be considered difficult. Just what does it mean to be a borderline personality ? I read this book as an assigned text for a graduate class in Narcissistic and Borderline disorders. No wonder we're all confused about this disorder !!! I found this book to be an excellent compilation of key papers on the history and development of the concept of borderline disorder. The book is divided into sections with seminal papers from each decade. The preface of each section, written by the editor, is informative and entertaining, placing each paper in it's historical context and making for a fascinating story of an aspect of the history of psychoanalysis and psychiatry in America. Classical Anthology in field of traumatologyAfer spending hundreds of hours in the library in order to compile some great chapers to my thesis in clinical psychology regardins Trauma and Holocaust Survivors. Just then, when i finished to write my thesis, i accidently encounterd the book "Essentail Paper on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder". I almost burst into tears... All my hours at the libaray for what... figuring out who are the leading figures in the field of traumatology, and there it was...
Well, there is one thing for curtain, this book will not fail me during my Ph.D, since i'm ordering it ASAP.
