Gives even the real Bowles fan interesting new insights
Caponi's collection of interviews, spanning several decades up to the early 1990's is a must for all real fans of Paul Bowles work, and an intriguing introduction to his life, work and influences for those who know little about him. As with any such collection of interviews, there is bound to be much repetition - different interviewers ask often essentially the same questions, while Bowles gives (more or less) the same answers. However, even for someone like myself, who thinks they know quite a bit about the man and his work (and maintains one of the Paul Bowles pages on the Web -

Many of the interviews touch on many of the other literary figures Bowles has known - Tennessee Williams is a frequent topic of conversation, as are William Burroughs and the other beat writers, and their time spent in Tangiers. It becomes very evident from the few interviews that dwell on the subject that Bowles is not going to talk much about his late wife, Jane. His hatred for the biography 'An invisible spectator' comes through clearly in several places, but I found it intriguing that his preferred biographer (if he had to make a reluctant choice) would be Millicent Dillon, author of the biography of Jane Bowles.

Altogether a very worthwhile read for anyone with any interest in Paul Bowles.

Conversating with a Master
He is a genius and through this book we can get a closer look at what makes him tick. We gain insight through this work into the mind of a literary giant and we also realize that he is the Southern Gentleman that we all admire.

The philosopher as virtuosa.
Why do I regard the publisher's remarks about this text being unabridged (read: sanitized to corporate "standards") with such lingering skepticism? Is is a question of having no faith in corporate ethics, or one of needing, however subconsciusly, to deny Sontag's virtuosity of intellect? If the transcribed interviews are reliably authentic, here is a mind quite literally capable of extemporizing sophisticated philosophical discourse. No wonder Camille Paglia attempted to make a cottage industry of ridiculing, belittling, and otherwise attacking this author, who not only anticipated many of Paglia's themes by decades, but who has also shown herself capable of stating in a few laconic phrases what takes Paglia (for all her verbal music) hypomanically-digressive chapters. This is a refreshingly intimate encounter with what "Hurricane Camille" herself has dubbed "one of the great minds of the Twentieth Century", in addition to being far more engaging reading than I had anticipated. Read Paglia's more serious endeavors to exercize your right brain; but read Sontag (this compilation included) to exercise your left. My only regret is noting that certain of the interviews included here were translated back into English from other languages: The smoothness of translation, for good or for ill, gave no clue.

An excellent compilation of Naipaul interviews
V.S. Naipaul is arguably the greatest author of our time. Yet although a world traveler and a master conversationalist, he is reserved and enigmatic -- a hard man to get to know. Professor Jussawalla's book compiles interviews with Naipaul that date back to the '60s, shedding light on his personal as well as literary progress. This is 'must' reading for anyone with a serious interest in V.S. Naipaul.

Clarity and Brevity
This book is outstanding. It explains sophisticated concepts in economics in a fashion that is relatively easy to understand. The Chapter on "Cost in Economic Theory" clearly illustrates the superiority of marginal value theory and the importance of the concept of opportunity cost. The chapter on "the London Tradition" and the title chapter demonstrate the importance of subjectivity in economic costs. The chapters on public goods and social costs touch on a series of important issues in political economy. Also, Buchanan's discussion of the Socialist Calculation Debate is illuminating. Best of all, it is succinct and lucid. Cost and Choice is a must read for everyone who wants to understand economic theory.

Go to this book when fancy gift wrap bows aren't enough
Progress beyond mere giftwrap and create unique boxes and other containers for your gifts, be it food, clothes, jewelry, whatever. Small items and money really benefit from containers that don't immediately give away their contents like those velvet clamshells jewelry boxes or dollar shaped greeting cards do. Some of my favorite projects are:
-a trangular pyramid formed by folding a triangle shaped piece of paper.
-2 different colored heart shaped boxes that fit together to form a square with an 'S' curve between 2 opposite corners (think a diamond shaped yin-yang symbol).
-a flower box where folded paper forms a triangular cone on the bottom and a flower design on the top (a pink and white one are in the lower middle of the cover photo).
-a hexagonal box made of six individual triangular boxes.
-boxes specifically for food items, many with handles.
-boxes for floral items, some with handles.

These are just a few of many, many projects in this book. The first section of the book contains color photos of the finished projects and the rest of the book contains the instructions (with photos, diagrams and measurements) to make them. The diagrams can be photocopied to scale a project up to a required size.

AN IMPORTANT WARNING: The bulk of the projects don't contain step by step instructions. Immediately following the color photo section are step by step instructions for 5 boxes that are represenative of all of the projects in the book. A legend is given for what the thick or thin solid lines and dashed lines mean in the diagrams. All projects thereafter assume that you know to cut thick lines, but to fold thin lines like a valley withought being explicitly directed to do so.

Confused? Well, if a project required you to fold a piece of paper so that it opens like a book read from left to right, you would be shown a drawing of a square or rectangle with a thin line in the middle. There would also be a black and white photo of a piece of folded paper with the folded portion on the left side. If you didn't remember that thin lines mean you fold paper to open in a 'V' shape, you would have trouble. It's crucial that you do the step by step projects and learn the legend if you haven't done origami or similar crafts. If you think you'd need more guidance, this probably isn't the book for you.

If you do get the book, Enjoy! It's a real treat.

Make art in your scrapbooks...
Part of the fun of creating scrapbooks is the paper crafting aspect of the art. While cropping pictures adds form to your pages, it's the embellishments that make the pages pop. Some like to go crazy and some take the simple approach - and that's exactly what you can do with paper crafting.

You can go with the basic paper chains, tearing, and collage to more challenging weaving, quilling, and kirigami (Japanese paper cutting.) The instructions are all laid out here in an easy-to-follow format that will have you making paper masterpieces in no time at all! Some other techniques included are: pull-apart designs, cutting details into layered designs, louvers, bargellos, irises, pleats, and paper tole.

Whether a beginner or a more advanced crafter, you'll have no problem finding a technique to meet your needs - have fun!

I am looking for the writer who attended Kent State in the seventies and was a friend of my husband. We have lost touch and I know you stopped by our house twice while writing a book. I am wondering if you are the same Steve Davis. We lived in Steubenville, Oh. You let me read your rough drafts and they were wonderful. If so please email me at richards@weir.net. Cindy
