Classic papers in child abuse
The two editors, Anne Cohn Donnelly from Chicago and Kim Oates from Sydney, both known for research and teaching activity in the field of child abuse and neglect (CAN), have compiled this important book with classic papers in the field. The book has 25 classic papers selected by the editors via a survey of a group of leaders in the field, who were asked to designate the papers or chapters that they felt had influenced them in their work and to the child protection field as a whole. The results were send to a wider international group, who were asked to rank the chosen papers, which was then compared with a search in the Science Citation Index and the Social Science Citation Index over a ten year period. The 25 papers are listed in a cronological order, which conveys the history of child abuse and neglect discovery, awareness and work over the years 1946-89. The papers give you a multidisciplinary history of CAN from John Caffey’s article on “Multiple fractures in the long bones of infants suffering from chronic subdural hematoma” from 1946, when CAN was not yet “discovered” and unthinkable to the medical profession, to the last article by Cathy Spatz Widom on “Does violence beget violence ? A critical examination of the literature” in 1989. Each article is introduced by the editors with comments by 25 international clinicians, researchers or academics. The editors have done a fine job on this book, but permit us a few commentaries. We would have liked to have seen each paper starting out with the original abstract and reference. We would also have liked a little more information on the personalities behind the papers and some more history for the ones not personally involved in this history, like the story around the classic paper by C Henry Kempe on the “Battered child syndrome” from 1962, which in fact was compiled by one of his students and later “re-found” by Henry in a shoebox and published in order to make the professional world aware of abused and neglected children. Next year the International Congress on CAN will celebrate the 40 years of CAN work in Denver, where Henry was the chairman of Pediatrics. We believe this book will be a must for every professional entering the field of child abuse and neglect in order to learn the thinking of these early researchers, the history and progress in a field that has expanded enormously in the last 50 years....

Classic Papers in Natural Resource Economics

Nonpareil!
Dr. Gopalakrishnan has skillfully assembeled a collection of classic papers in natural resource economics. These represent seminal contributions of distinguished economists over the last seven decades (1930-2000).

Each of the 14 papers included in the book serve to facilitate, broaden and deepen understanding of complex issues. Logical sequencing of subject areas and topics allow readers to gain insights on many issues related to resource production, pricing, consumption and allocation.

The editorial job is a masterpiece. The five parts of the book have been woven together with extraordinary coherence and connectivity. These deal with the intertemporal problem, externalities and market failure, property rights, institutions and public choice, the economics of exhaustible resources and the economics of renewable resources. This book used as a supplementary text in any graduate course would serve to strengthen the training of any aspiring resource or environmental economist. Indeed no part of it can be omitted.

The broad overview of the text's organization written by Dr. Gopalakrishanan is another major selling point. In superb writing style he reveals the book's exciting virtues and its excellent pedagogic value. Clearly, this book is a must have for every serious scholar of natural resource economics. For where else can one find such a convenient bundle of the writings of luminaries in the field?

A must for any mass communication scholar
This is one of the best texts on the effects, either real or imagined, of mass communication on its consumers. Texts on research can be hard to get through. However, Richard Jackson Harris takes years of scholarly writings from the classic "Bobo Doll Study" to the latest in mass communication research and provides the reader with one of the most objective, comprehensive, witty and easy-to-read texts this subject.

For any mass communication scholar or practitioner, this is an absolute must read. I have written several research papers throughout college and graduate school, and this book was an indespensible tool. If communication is your thing, get it now!

Engaging look at Rawls' lifework
Rawls' doctoral dissertation, completed at Harvard in 1951, sketched a procedure for adjudicating certain political and moral conflicts. Twenty years later he parlayed this procedure into his famous elaboration of social contract theory, his conception of "justice as fairness." This idea marks the heart of Rawls' _A Theory of Justice_, the most important and influential work of political philosophy of the twentieth century. His central thesis, that a conception of justice as fairness would be accepted by all members of liberal constitutional democracies, motivated Rawls' justly-celebrated philosophical defense of democratic liberalism. In _Political Liberalism_ (1993), Rawls deepened his philosophical analysis by articulating an even broader principle, that of "public reason," which he believes is the shared basis for justifying (among other things) liberty of conscience, freedom of thought, and toleration of difference within liberal societies. Most recently, in _The Law of Peoples_ (1999), Rawls has stretched the social contract yet further by defending an even more general philosophical principle, that of the "just law of peoples." Just as the liberal principles of justice of fairness and public reason allowed him to develop complex theories about political relations within liberal democracies, Rawls believes that, because it would be acceptable to both constitutional liberals and members of certain illiberal societies, this new principle forms the basis of a social contract more inclusive than those of his earlier treatises. Rawls' vision of a realizable near-utopia emerges through his beautiful theoretical elaborations of a social contract theory that takes his principles--as well as the existence of a world burdened with outlaw states, crushing poverty, and problematical absolutism--utterly seriously.

Rawls' _Collected Papers_ brings together nearly all of his major and minor shorter publications on these and related issues. Many essays explore in greater depth issues raised by critics of _A Theory of Justice_ and _Political Liberalism_, and all of them together paint a fascinating portrait of Rawls' philosophical development between 1951 and the present.

Vitally important book on children's health
This inspiring book is a record of the life's work of a great and humane woman. All parents, health professionals and educationists, indeed everybody concerned with children's development and welfare, should read it.

Frymann's early research showed that birth trauma, resulting from prolonged difficult labour, is the commonest cause of development delays in children. 80% of children with learning difficulties, attention deficits and autism, suffered traumatic birth during which the cranium was compressed as it passed down the birth canal. This limited physiological motion and disturbed the development of the nerve pathways, impairing coordination and confusing sensory input. Yet textbooks of child psychiatry uniformly ignore difficult labour's material effects on children's development.

Autistic children's sensory dysfunctions, and characteristic perceptual and attention deficits, have a neurological origin, not a psychological origin (as postulated by Bruno Bettelheim). The psychological symptoms are the effects, not the causes, of autism. Perinatal complications are more common among autistic children than among their normal siblings or normal controls. Over half of autistic children show focal neurological defects and EEG abnormalities. Many have damage to the temporal lobe causing memory problems. Neurological impairment produces other mental health problems.

Birth trauma can also cause diseases of the ear, nose and throat, among the commonest illnesses. Compression of the facial bones may contribute to sinusitis, compression of the temporal bones to glue ear and vertigo, and compression of the jugular foramen to vomiting. Maladjustments of the jaw can lead to lisping and to difficulties with chewing, eating and swallowing.

A newborn baby's cranium can be damaged in all these many different ways, but by the same token, it can also be mended. Osteopathic treatment can improve the cranial structure and so improve neurological function, assisting in restoring proper function in all these areas. Frymann's 3-year study of 186 children at the Osteopathic Center for Children in La Jolla, California, resulted in the classic 1972 paper, 'Effect of osteopathic medical management on neurological development in children'. This showed that osteopathic treatment improved sensory, intellectual and motor performance in children with neurological problems. Her motto is, 'Don't punish your children, treat them.' The earlier the treatment, the better the results.

These findings show that osteopathy should be included in paediatric health care and in special needs education. Ophthalmology, audiology, psychiatry and obstetrics could also all benefit from embracing the science of osteopathy. Osteopathic treatment can also reduce or eliminate the effects of other trauma. Often the osteopathic approach holds the key to solving the patient's problem: osteopathy has a vital part to play in preventive medicine.
