Sacred and Profane
A wonderful and too often overlooked masterpiece of the middle ages. Written by a clergyman, the Archpriest of Hita, who questions the distinction, if there is any, between sacred and profane love. Through a loose narration of often-time hilarious tales which recount the archpriest's amourous adventures, the author questions the notions of the sign, meaning, morality and love. Ultimately it represents a meditation on the religious notions of salvation and sin. The book in fact was written in part as a love manual for those who wish to experience sexual pleasure (through a reading of the book) but do not want to fall into the mortal sin of fornication. _The Book of Good Love_ was also instrumental in Fernando de Rojas' construction of his masterpiece, _La celestina_.

This volume is like a trip in time!
Booker T. leaps off the pages of this dusty volume and he is a living breathing person. His charisma and energy left me exhausted. One day he is making bricks for his college, the next he is touring New England to raise funds. His wives and friends die of exhaustion around him. I read this book by mistake. I thought it was an assignment for a class(the actual assignment was a thin biography). I took this thick and dusty volume full of footnotes on vacation to the mountains. I decided to skim it and avoid the footnotes. After the first chapter, I read every footnote and the entire volume. These are Booker's journal entries and personal papers. He literally steps out of the pages and you are totally emersed in the beginnings of Tuckaseegee and every aspect of his life. He makes the time and place as real as if you were there. I actually became exhausted by his energy and the mountain of activities he was engaged in at the time. Prior to reading this book, I was not interested in him at all. After reading it, I think he is one of history's underrated characters. This is perhaps one of the most fascinating journals I have ever read on the art of leadership.

I laughed until I cried
It was one of the funniest books that I have ever read. After reading this book, I felt that I knew more about baseball than I did before. I thought the author knew a lot about kids and the way they play baseball when they are young.

Perfect for beginning readers
"Brave Pig" is perfect for children who are just beginning to read independently. My first-grader loved the pictures, especially the one of the cellar "eating" Babe the pig. The books in the Step Into Reading series, Step 1, of which "Brave Pig" is one of several dozen titles, are just what I have been looking for to help with first- and second-grade non-native speakers (of English) at my children's school in Bangkok, Thailand. The pupils will be able to understand this book and the others in the series with minimal teacher-intervention, and they will enjoy being able to read English books on their own.

Recommended for armchair travelers and Brazilian studies.
Stefan Zweig draws upon his personal experiences andimpressions of Brazil to portray a vast, inviting, fertile land of immense resources and a history devoid of major wars in Brazil: A Land Of The Future. Here portrayed is the untouched beauty of the Brazilian interior, the vibrant growth and progress of the urban areas, and a vision of an almost utopian place seemingly unaffected by the ills of the modern world and providing refuge from global hostilities. Ably translated into English by Lowell A. Bangerter, Brazil: A Land Of The Future is recommended reading for armchair travelers, students of geography and western hemispheric studies, and Brazilian history, culture, and society.

A captivating and highly recommended picture book story
Gently written by Lillian hammer Ross, Buba Leah And Her Paper Children is a truly charming children's picture book story about a quiet Jewish family. Visiting her great aunt Buba Leah, little Chava hears Buba Leah speak fondly of her paper children, which prompts Chava to wonder: What are paper children?, And where could they be hidden? The gentle, countryside-manner of the full-color artwork by Mary Morgan beautifully enhance this captivating and highly recommended picture book story for young readers.

a surprising discovery and fantastic read
I accidentally ran across this book in the "new arrivals" section of a university library last night, and stayed up until 2 A.M. reading it. It contains the life story of the neglected Tibetan master Dolpopa, a subsequent account of the ill-fated legacy of his teachings, and two brief treatises by The Omniscient himself. I am not a specialist in Buddhism, and in fact had never even heard of Dolpopa 24 hours ago, but now I will never forget him.

Cyrus Stearns has obviously put an impressive amount of research into this volume without ever sliding over into pedantry. His concern is to tell the story of a simple and profound idea as it unveils itself in the spirtual and geographic vastness of 14th century Tibet. The central issue of Zhentong is explained clearly and memorably, and in such a way as to make it relevant for Western philosophers as well. Lucid works of this kind do far more for a true East-West dialogue than any amount of "multicultural" preaching. All who read this book with an open mind will be moved to cure their ignorance of the history of Buddhism.

I feel as though a new portion of the human past has been opened up for me by Stearns' work. It deserves to be read by anyone with even a trace of interest in world religions, world history, or the past and future of metaphysics in all traditions.
