enlightening book on indigenous land useMany of us have been given the impression that the indigenous people of the Americas before white invasion lived wandering, nomadic lives of fierce hunting with little if any organized manipulation of their environment. This book corrects this impression with seasoned research. Indigenous California is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in the world. This work focuses on the ways the people of the region helped sustain the land's yield for their own uses. Henry T. Lewis's contribution focuses on controlled burn practices, though the subject is included in several entries from other researchers. Burns occurred in every environment, were seasonally timed, and helped maintain a varied-age, mosaic landscape. Peri and Patterson and Ortiz cover maintenance of plants for baskets. Helen McCarthy discusses oak maintenance. Philip J. Wilke reports on bow stave extraction from living junipers. Swezey and Heizer discuss management of anadramous fish and also agriculture among the Paiute of Owens Valley, which involved irrigation, planting of grasses, and burns. The editors have done an excellent job at selecting the entries. All are fascinating and enhance the reader's picture of the West Coast as it once was. This reader from Texas wishes enough info was available on his region to do a similar compilation. Combine this book with Leeann Hinton's Flutes of Fire for a more complete picture of the richness of West Coast culture and with Helena Norberg-Hodge's Ancient Futures for an understanding of how indigenous wisdom can be sustained to improve our current lives. Indigenous people still, in California as elsewhere, face continued repression and this book can give some idea of the worth of their cultures and the importance of supporting their struggles.

The Bear FactsThis is one of the better Berenstain Bear books, perhaps becuase there is no parental moralizing involved. In fact, the bears and friends (Cousin Fred, Lizzy Bruin, and Dr. Wise Old Owl) are on their own as detectives.
They get a call that the mean, nasty Bogg Brothers ("Not only did they rob and cheat, but they also made rude remarks...") have escaped from jail (again). The Bears find that the police have most of the places with valuables covered, with one exception, the "Bearsonian" museum. Here, with the help of Professor Actual Factual, they that find several items have been stolen, and they proceed to solve the case.
The story is more original and the language more witty than usual in this series, and I also liked the setting: It makes museums sound very interesting. 48 pages, with bright pictures, and recommended by the publisher for readers in grades 2-3. Recommended!

Good read!!!!While the book does cover the fact that Betsy Ross created the first ever Star Spangled Banner, it goes into more depth covering the other facets of Betsy's life which not many people know. For instance, her contributions to the patriot cause aren't just limited to her creation of the flag. She also worked on the tattered clothing of American soldier and created bandages for the wounded. People also don't know that Betsy was a businesswoman after the war which is an area where very few woman had success. The book covers all of that and much more which is why it's such a good read ...

Beyond Note Cards : Rethinking the Freshman Research Paper
Published in Paperback by Boynton/Cook (28 January, 1999)

Useful and inspiring; a must read for modern comp. teachersProf. Ballenger has assembled a collection of theoretical and practical guidelines for re-assessing the way in which research papers are approached in beginning composition classes. He uses two contrasting examples of student attitudes towards research and follows each as it goes through a transformation during the writing process. The author traces the history of the research genre and suggests a simple, but much-needed shift in thinking on how to approach the often-dreaded task of teaching the freshman research paper. He also includes a handful of useful classroom exercises and appendices on evaluating Internet sources and constructing two-column research journals. I found the book to echo a number of the frustrations I have had in teaching and motivating the same concepts. I would recommend this text without hesitation to any college or university English instructor who wants to improve his or her presentation of the research genre.
