Thinking & Expression
Being an artist and teaching art, I found that Gardner's paper put into words so much of what an artist does naturally. Incorporating reflection about one's own artwork, about a classmate's, and about the "masters" is so very important in teaching art and in bringing children to think critically and creatively. By interweaving reflection with expression, Gardner has identified the cognitive science that can take place so naturally in the art classroom. Another book which also expounds on the importance of thinking skills and how naturally that can be achieved in art education is Perkin's Intelligent Eye. I highly recommend Gardner's book, especially to art educators in the field.

Wonderful Instructional Book
This book is one of the best resources I have found for paper sculpture. There are projects ranging from a beginner's level to an advanced level. The book has the patterns with every project on grids for easy resizing. The book also lists the tools and papers needed very adequately. Some of the projects in the book are useful as well as decorative. I highly reccomend this book to a beginner or someone more advanced who is looking for ideas.

exquisite soul food!
This book is absolutely delightful! The clarity of presentation with techniques, patterns and finished projects lends itself to becoming a well-worn resource. The only drawback is that I wanted it to be double the size with even more patterns and gallery pictures! What wonderful lay-out! I took it to bed for a week just to feed my soul.

Artists' Pigments: A Handbook of Their History and Characteristics (Vol 2 (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Natl Gallery of Art (October, 1997)
Author: Ashok Roy
Amazon base price: $29.95

Something for everyone, even science geeks
This the second of the National Gallery's series on the history and science of pigments. The histories of each pigment are well thought out, and unlike many older books on this subject, the collective authors have not neglected the non-western world. From the perspective of someone who is active in living history groups and calligraphy societies, the lists of who used these pigments, along with when and where, is a welcome feature. As someone who hunts down minerals to make them into paint, the information on IR and X-ray diffraction data, along with color plates of the pigments examined with polarized-light and scanning electron microscopy are a welcome change compared to most other books on historical pigment use. As a scientist, the analytical info is worth the price of the book all by itself, from my point of view. Much of the discussion on the occurence and art history of the mineral pigments has found its way into geology and mineralogy classes I have taught.

Some of the material in this volume can also be found in Gettens and Stout almost word for word, though in the articles where this is most conspicuous, Gettens is always first or second author. To be fair, the editors of this series have never pretended that the articles were new material - though much of it has been new to me - but rather revised and updated material from the journal _Studies in Conservation_. Since the venerable Gettens was deceased by the time this volume was published, he may not have had the opportunity to revise his own material. Gettens was one of the instigators of the Artists' Pigment series, and since most of his research has not been superceded as far as I can tell, it's a small complaint and certainly not grounds to avoid this book. Don't avoid this book! Out of the three volumes in this series, this volume (Vol. 2) is the one I like best, probably because it covers most of the mineral pigments and some of the artificial pigments that I find or make. And unlike some other books on pigments, written by armchair scholars, it is obvious that the collective authors of this volume got down and dirty and played with the paints. The hands-on experience really shines through.

As someone who barely has time to keep up with the literature in my own field, I found the Artists' Pigments series a welcome addition to my library - a lot of well-researched and well-written material all in one place. I must admit that my favorable opinion of this series is partly based on the wealth of scientific analyses therein, which may not help a non-nerd evaluate this book, but I will point out that all my art-fiend friends, some of whom make their living in the fine arts, are constantly trying to borrow it.

Fabulous! A non-stop ride from beginning to end.
The best Atlas of Color Coded Doppler Sonography I've read yet, and I've read quite a few. Well-written, gripping, and altogether masterful. The dexrous manipulation of digits, the soft touch -- a feat. I couldn't put it down. Two thumbs up!

Austin EMS Responding: Emergency Medical Services in Central Texas Prepare for a Regional Future (Working Paper No. 94)
Published in Paperback by Univ Texas at Austin, Office of Publications (01 November, 2000)
Author: Rebecca S. Christie
Amazon base price: $8.00
Average review score:

Very good research on a much neglected subject
R.S. Christie exposes a complicated network of interdependencies, relationships and problems in a seemingly narrow area of government. Yet, this work can be used as a model for anyone interested in the old "Where does the money go to?" question in the area of Government Science. Christie's writing is fluent and crystal-clear and she clearly has a good grasp of the inner workings of the Austin government. The US has long been debating issue regarding public spending in the area of Health Care. This work is an example of how some basic problems can be unlocked. I'd call it "A Barefoot Model for Problems in Government Spending". We usually talk of "taxpayers' money" - and this scientific work does an important service to those of us who wonder why red tape does seem to get worse every year. Highly specialized, yes, but recommended without doubt.
