Exquisite costumes
This is a great book. It includes an Annie Oakley doll, her husband Frank, Buffalo Bill, and Sitting Bull. It also includes a brief biographical account of Annie Oakley. The costumes are beautiful, and there are more than 10 for Annie. Each dress in the book actually existed and it tells what occasion the doll wore it for. This book is worth every penny, and is a must for fans of the Old West and paper doll buffs of any age.

Anselm Kiefer Works on Paper in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Paper
This is an excellent piece of work for people who like a lot of content and process information. Compares favorably to the great Terry Winters one (forgive me, I can't remember the title) of about the same time. And , for me (who is not fully convinced about Kiefer), the work itself is more affecting, telling, resonant, intimate, and just plain interesting, than the very grand paintings. Highly recommended especially for those who, like me, were unable to see the show itself.

Artaud From the Inside
I have been reading, disecting, and deconstructing Artaud for well over ten years and find this volume to be indispensible. Well worth the price. The immedicacy and visceral quality of Artaud's words are captured on paper, and where as tapes of his anguished voice might crackle and fade in time, this first hand document of his perceptual experience is truly timeless. This is not only a firmly woven tapestry for those in the know, but also a good starting point for those wondering what all the fuss is about.

A unique anthology of brief, free-verse poetry
Arcady is a unique anthology of brief, free-verse poetry by Donald Revell that borrows inspiration from Charles Ives and Henry David Thoreau to create an American feel to its style, which mourns death yet embraces the natural splendor of the deserts of the Spring Mountains of Nevada. A moving, thoughtful selection that leads the reader to ponder and open oneself to what lies beyond death and grief. Nature A Corner For Me: Nature a corner for me/There will be no room/For my portrait//Besides I have seen/Enough people and horses/And extraordinary fish//.To dream like this/Was worth the trouble/Getting here//My other ideas/Seem premature/Like ghosts now//The most beautiful star/Is crossing me

Archaeoastronomy in the Americas (Ballena Press Anthropological Papers ; No. 22)

Provokes A Pleasantly Concatenated Sense of Wonder
This book is really terrific. I think that for many of us, "wonder," and a sense of personal contact with grand mysteries, are best experienced through either astronomy or archaeology. What I mean by that is that both of these topics necessitate a personal confrontation with the unknown. The origin of the universe; the fate of ancient peoples; the mythic architecture of dreams uponst which olden folk drew, to explain their place in the cosmos... if these topics don't give you at least a slight frisson of wonder, then, face it, you're hopeless.

This book provides a concatenated sense of wonder by drawing upon both archaeology and astronomy, and distilling many of the most provocative questions explored in each topic. Added to these topics is a tincture of anthropology, which in my mind solidifies the claim that this book has to true neato-hood.

The focus is on the Western Hemisphere, as the title states. The book starts out with a collection of essays by respected, authentic scholars who study this kind of thing. Essay topics include "Archaeoastronomy Today," "Archaeoastronomy and Education," "The Role of Architecture and Planning in Archaeoastronomy," and various and sundry allied topics. If you have a longstanding interest in this kind of thing, you might expect the book to spend a lot of time on the Mayans, because of all the work done on Mayan calendrics, etc. Well, true, there's a lot about the Mayans, but there's also plentiful material about peoples without written records, such as the Chumash, the Apache, some Algonquin tribes, etc.

Let me just point out that the people who contributed to this volume are all respected scholars -- there are no von Danikens, no Velikovskies, no Stichins to call the whole book into question with wild claims about pre-historic extraterrestrial contact, or the like. This book is for real.

The body of the book, like the introduction, is divided into essays by academics with backgrounds in the appropriate fields. The essays are broken up into geographical regions -- North America, Mesoamerica, and South America. Essays delve into all kinds of fascinating subtopics about many archaeoastronomical questions. There is a little essay at the end, about prospects for teaching archaeoastronomy in the classroom. This essay is over twenty years old now, but it still has much of relevance to say.

If you enjoy this kind of thing, you may wish to know about the "Journal of Archaeoastronomy," which you can find either online or in "Magazines for Libraries." Also, you can't go wrong reading anything at all by Anthony Aveni. Anyway, this book is a lot of fun. I would recommend it to anyone.

Archbishop Stepinac in His Country's Church State Relations Paper

Spiritual leader for his people and an example to the world
The post-war president of the American Association of Jews, Louis Breier said of Stepinac: "This great man of the Church is charged with collaboration with the Nazis. We as Jews condemn openly this mockery. He was one of those few men in Europe who stood against tyrrany of Nazism even when the danger was greatest." As in many other Communist countries Stepinac endured a Serbo-Yugoslav show-trial and attempts were made to sully his name. But little can destroy the image of this great defender of human rights. As children growing up in the Sixties in Canada my friend's mom's junior class prayed for Stepinac's safety during the reign of terror in Communist Yugoslavia. This book is an easy, well-documented read for the junior Stepinac reader

One of the great poets of experimental form
This book is best described by "Trial Impressions," a 30-part poem which dominates the middle of the book. The first part of the poem reprints, verbatim, a short piece by the English poet John Dowland. The rest of the poems in the sequence rewrite this poem, each in a different way: as sestina, as Mallarmean sonnet, as contemporary plea ("Up to Date"), as an Oulipo "N+7" exercise (using two different dictionaries), as a detective riddle, as a palindrome, as Chinese imagism ("The Wang Way."), etc. The closest precedent to this amazing poem is Raymond Queneau's "Exercises in Style," another Oulipean tour de force. The poem is funny, touching, and maddening. There are other great works in the book, including the title piece (a very interesting faux "translation" of a nonexsistent prose precedent). And there is also "Histoire," perhaps the funniest sestina in the English language. This is a seduction narrative in which the repeated end-words are "Feminism," "Fascism," "Militarism," Marxism-Leninism," "Sexism," and "Racism." It's amazing to read this sestina and watch such words get drained of their meaning yet strangely re-energized.
