This book is a gem!
This book is a story of a little girl who cuts out a paper doll (a princess), and the adventures of the princess. The drawings are beautiful. They are colorful and very detailed. More than having beautiful pictures, the story behind the pictures is very sweet and imaginative. This is a must-have for our home library.

A magical story
I first saw this book on reading rainbow on our PBS channel. I quickly ran out and bought it to add to our library of childrens' books. It truly is a magical story with magical collages. The pages almost come alive as you are reading it outloud. My daughter loves this book. She loves how the little girl's brother brings the paper princess back home to her.

I came accross Kleven's new book, The Paper Princess Finds Her Way, and there was no question that I had to buy it for my daughter to add to her growing collection of books. I look forward to more of these beautiful books.

Outstanding
The text is pure magic and the pictures are pure poetry. Or: the story is poetic and the pictures are magic. Or: the story is colorful and the pictures are resonant. Or: ... oh, just buy it and enjoy it.

"The Enemy Papers": two thumbs up!
Rumor has it the tenitive title for this book was "Enemy Mine Omnibus", but in the long run I'm glad they didn't call it that.

"The Enemy Papers" is a collection of stories having to do with the war between the Dracs and Humans. The collection starts with an "abridged" version of the Draconian Talman or holy book.

A revised/extended author's addition of "Enemy Mine" comes next in line with contains a closer look at Shigan and Davidage's relationship and, later, the relationship Davidage has with the Jeriba family.

"The Tomorrow Testement" is the story of a human female soldier who gets taken to the Dracon as a POW and how she caught the eye of a leading Draconian offical and helped bring an end to the war. Bear this in mind; "Enemy Mine" and "Tomorrow Testement" occur at the same time.

"The Last Enemy" takes place around 30 years after "Enemy Mine", only this time from the point of view of a Draconian terrorist living on the planet that started the entire war. This unique view into the after effects of the peace treaty and the universal mindset of a war weary soldier is a nice addition to this collection.

The collection is completed with a set of essays about writing alien languages, Longyear's experiences writing the stories and a small Drac/English-English/Drac dictionary for those of us who are obsessed with these stories. Longyear does admite that, with a little persuassion, he might continue the series, complete the Talman and lenghten the dictionary.

With a little persuassion.

More timely than ever.
The Enemy Papers is a compilation that includes three novels, Enemy Mine, The Tomorrow Testament and The Last Enemy, as well as The Talman, an alien Bible. Barry Longyear's trilogy of the war between humans and the alien Dracs was always a fantastic story, philosophically deep while entertaining to read, but today the story is even more timely. In this world of renewed terrorist activity and threat of war, a well-thought-out treatise of unrequited hate, fierce nationalism and the horrors of war reads like a world relations primer. The issues of how to establish and keep peace are dealt with honestly and with human (and alien) nature always considered. Nothing is easy, and nothing is straightforward. Longyear is a spectacular writer and this is one of his best. I guarantee that the ending to the last novel will knock your socks off, whether you are wearing socks or not. I promise. Read this book, it will engrave itself on your soul.

Alien Scripture
The first part of this all-in-one volume is The Talman, the Holy Book of the alien Drac race. The Talman is the premise for the rest of the three novels that follow in the volume. I consider scripture to be inspired search for truth, including the true definition of the relationship between man (or Drac, in this case) and God (or other Higher Power). While reading The Talman, I had the distinct feeling that I was reading real scripture disguised as fictional scripture. Mr. Longyear's insight was thought-provoking as well as entertaining. The series is a worthy entry among the classics dealing with the problem of the relationship between theology/spirituality and science, such as James Blish's A Case of Conscience and Robert Sawyer's Calculating God.

You wont put the book down!!
my friend that never!!(i mean never) reads got in trouble for reading this book during class! she couldnt put it down and neither could i!

A GREAT BOOK
I read this book in 1985 as a sophmore in high school. It was a scary book to read for me at the time because I had started getting in the habit of throwing up after eating. I had felt so much better after throwing up and thought that no harm would come of it. After reading the book cover to cover I realized how serious my actions were and stopped. I recently thought of this book because one of my older friends daughter has been battling anorexia and they have almost lost her a few times. It was a good book to read, after all, I have remembered it after 18 years.

Good-Bye Paper Doll
I read this book 9 years ago and I can still remeber how much I cried at the end. This is a book that every young girl MUST read and I would recomend it to boys as well.

a must read
paper moon the book. from someone who grew up watching the movie. i remember being a little bitty thing sitting on the floor with my toys watching this movie with my mom. ive always loved it. (granted mom was a little bit more weary when tatum oneal came out with "little darlings" with christie mcnichol *laughs*)
well then i found out, now at the age of 24, that its a book. wow, im fast. lol
the book is somewhat different but the same story. mose is played under the name "long boy" though his true name is still moses. they include cons they didnt put in the movie. they put in some rather important to the plot parts about the story. they talk about addies mother which wasnt done much in the movie. also the burial scene wasnt in there because addie had known "long boy" since she was very little and they had always had a connection unlike in the movie where addie meets him for the first time at the funeral at opening of the film where he is reluctant to take her on the road.
the story also takes place over her being from ages 6-11 unlike the movie which didnt go that long through things. the book after you start it you cant put it down. i was up last night in the wee hours of the morning still going "ok, just one more chapter". its something that you should either see before the movie or after it, though if i could have gone back i would have read it first but i was way too young. when i first saw it i was still practically gnawing on the bars of my play pen...

PAPER MOON RULES!
Too long out of print, this paperback is a beauty. A compulsively readable book. Addie Pray and Long Boy take the South by storm. It's fun and fast, but also weighty and moving. The amazing movie was based just on the first third.

PAPER MOON
This is an excellent book. Having long been a fan of the movie, what a joy to discover the book that started it all. Addie Pray is a hilarious and charming narrator and her adventures pulled me happily along. A real treat. For anyone who likes stories of sassy girls growing up.

Letters and Papers from Prison is a collection of notes and correspondence covering the period from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's arrest in 1943 to his execution by the Gestapo in 1945. The book is probably most famous, and most important, for its idea of "religionless Christianity"--an idea Bonhoeffer did not live long enough fully to develop, but whose timeliness only increases as the lines between secular and ecclesial life blur. Bonhoeffer's first mention of "religionless Christianity" came in a letter in 1944:
What is bothering me incessantly is the question what Christianity really is, or indeed who Christ really is, for us today. The time when people could be told everything by means of words, whether theological or pious, is over, and so is the time of inwardness and conscience--and that means the time of religion in general. We are moving towards a completely religionless time; people as they are now simply cannot be religious any more. Even those who honestly describe themselves as "religious" do not in the least act up to it, and so they presumably mean something quite different by "religious."
The pleasures of Letters and Papers from Prison, however are not all so profound. Occasionally, Bonhoeffer's letters burst into song--sometimes with actual musical notations, other times with unforgettable phrases. Looking forward to seeing his best friend, Bonhoeffer writes, "To meet again is a God." --Michael Joseph Gross

Bonhoeffer's last great writing
If nothing else, you just have to admire Dietrich Bonhoeffer for the stand he made for the truth. Whether or not you agree with his role in the murder plot of Hitler, you have to salute the German theologian for his honesty in this book, which is comprised of letters sent mainly to Eberhard Bethge and his parents. An appendix includes letters that he penned to his fiance Maria. If you want to read this book for pure theology sake, then I would probably turn to The Cost of Discipleship first (which, he mentions in one letter, he wrote partly out a false hope to acquire faith by trying to live a holy life, a very honest admission). But if you want to better understand the man and what he was truly made of in the time of his last two years of life, then this book is very insightful. I don't think anyone can do better to get into the head of this great theologian than to read Letters and Papers From Prison.

Poignant, connected, universal
Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison show the reader the thoughts of a man who wrote with immense insight under circumstances fraught with the deepest despair. Prior to the war, Bonhoeffer had established himself as a visionary, if somewhat moderate, young Christian theologian. His imprisonment by the Nazis in the wake of the failure of the conspiracy to assasinate Hitler gave rise to this series of letters, ranging from the trivial to the most profound, reflecting the thoughts and ideas of a man whose ideas continued to evolve, even as hope dwindled. It is tempting to see Bonhoeffer as a sort of modern Christian saint "set-piece" of a man, or a Spielberg movie waiting to be made. Such an interpretation of the man would trivialize the flesh and blood reality of his life, as these letters demonstrate. Collections of letters typically suffer from one of two defects--either they are inanely trivial and gossippy, or they spend far too much time on being "literary" for posterity, and not enough time giving real insight into the writer. Bonhoeffer's letters avoid both of these traps. Although the letters collection is not overly burdened by the confessional, letters to his parents and fiance help us understand in very human terms the horror of imprisonment by the Nazis, notwithstanding their careful phrasing to avoid the censor's pen. The letters do contain some of the intentionally "literary"--Bonhoeffer writes poetry which is reasonably spare and connective and sometimes writes for the hypothetical future reader. But the real tour de force is Bonhoeffer's analysis of the evolution of his theological thought in light of the changes wrought by modernity and made apparent to him through his experiences. In several reasonably succinct but incredibly sweeping letters, he outlines a new vision of Christianity, a form of post-Christian Christianity if you will, which has generated a half century of debate and provided inspiration to Christian and non-Christian alike. In this age in which "liberal" religion has been sadly equated by some with "flaccid" religion, we see through these letters a deeply disciplined thinker outlining the way for Christianity to remain relevant in a world all too ready to try to "outgrow" the faith. Although his thinking is complex, and in some instances he assumes a base of knowledge of late 19th C and early 20th C. Christian theology the 21st C. casual reader may not have, the letters are quite accessible and profoundly human. This is not a man building a neat construct out of his dissertation. This is a condemned man hinting at the blueprint for the transformation of a faith. Although it is tempting to suggest that this is a "Christian masterpiece" of 20th C. faith, the suggestion is a disservice. This is a masterpiece of literature which transcends genre or faith. In the interminable list of intellectual heroes of the 20th C., we rarely see Pastor Bonhoeffer among the honorees. But this book is a powerful argument that this man, who saw the need for religious people to use religion less as a crutch and more as a transformation, should be included prominently in our intellectual heroes list.

Food for the soul
An excellent selfportrait of Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran minister, while in a nazi German prison during the war.
It reveals the immense power of the spirit that helps us go through the most cruel experiences life can have awaiting for us. My first book by Bonhoeffer and I am glad I started with this one. What a great man!

great fun; easy to use
I don't have a lot of patience or talent for putting things together. I bought this for my son when he was 5 and he loved it so much I bought it again when he was 6. The pages are just torn out and folded together easily and they fly great! My kids have had so much fun playing with these airplanes. This time around I'm going to try "World Record Paper Airplanes", but the "Kid's Paper Airplanes" was a big hit for us.

Cool
Bought this for my 10 year old. It is so cool. It is easy to use and provides lots of fun. I would highly recommend it.

Must have for children
My son is six and very interested in paper airplanes. The books we have checked out from the library are advanced and hard to follow. This book gives you the pattern complete with dotted lines for folding. We made four in under thirty minutes and they all flew! This is a great book for kids and adults with no mechanical knowledge or patience!

fun flowers for every age
Klutz Press has done it again with another wonderful book. The flowers are easy to make and look great. Our home was soon blooming with flowers. The only thing you need extra is a pair of scissors and you're ready to go. I'm going to buy a copy for a friend in the hospital for pre-term labor. It'll be a great way to pass the time and brighten up her room.

Flowers for anytime, anywhere
I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I spent a whole weekend off making flower after flower and I still want to make more. The instructions are super-clear, easy & fun, and the book supplies plenty of tissue and pipe cleaners. It says on the back cover "This is not a book - it's a bouquet of flowers in flattened form" (or something like that *chuckle*) and they weren't kidding! Buy it and HAVE fun - you won't be disappointed!
:)

stuff for the inner child!
Get this along with Shrinky Dinks, for any teen you know or anyone turning 40!
ha! this book is worth the money ONLY IF:
you can't understand the directions on ANYTHING!
MAINLY DUE TO:
you don't like to read directions and only look at pictures.
AND
really hate shopping for supplies to any art project
AND
are just too lazy and dont know where to start anyway when trying to have good rainy indoor fun.
Now I am already visualizing "no postive feedback" next to my review, so I will add,
this is very easy and inspiring and within 30 seconds figured this out and made a neat flower with no pain that made us want to make two hours worth of "ooh and awwwsss" flowers which we strung from everything in our house and led us to envision a world of paper flowers that never die we could give to everyoen we know to also inspire them. There are really complicated flowers in the book but we love the werid "don't bother cutting it out right see what happens" flowers the most.

IN fact, we are gettign a pile of plain white tissue and water coloring them tye dye this weekend to make massive giant huge flowers ! I am planning on sending this to every teen-angst person I know! This is my personal statement on "when your stressed make a flower!"
Sometimes life really can be that simple!

ON BEYOND ZEBRA-PAPER
Published in Hardcover by Random House Books for Young Readers (12 August, 1980)
Author: Dr. Seuss
Amazon base price: $2.95
Used price: $1.95
Collectible price: $21.13
A thoroughly Seussian tweak of the alphabet-book tradition, On Beyond Zebra is about all the letters that most people ignore--the ones that come after Z. Our hero (instantly recognizable to most Seuss fans as the boy who captured Thing One and Thing Two in The Cat in the Hat) takes his young friend, Conrad Cornelius O'Donald O'Dell, on a guided tour of all the weird creatures that begin with letters such as Yuzz, Wumbus, and Glikk. "And Nuh is the letter I use to spell Nutches, Who live in small caves, known as Nitches, for hutches." The message is pretty simple: the alphabet pins down boring old "reality," but if you explore further afield there are more interesting worlds to discover. "So, on beyond Z! It's high time you were shown, / That you really don't know all there is to be known." Explorers in need of guidance will even find a table of useful new letters (a beyondabet? a WumbaGlikk?) in the back. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr
Average review score:

Quite possibly Dr. Seuss's greatest work
"On Beyond Zebra" was my favorite of Dr. Seuss's books when I was a child, and as an adult I appreciate the insight and humor of this classic even more. The concept of the book is simple: the narrator introduces young Conrad Cornelius o'Donald o'Dell to the weird and wonderful letters that come after "z" (yes, AFTER "z"), and provides the wide-eyed child with a marvelous bestiary of the Seussian creatures whose names begin with these letters.

Actually, Seuss's post-"z" letters appear to constitute a syllabary rather than a true extended alphabet, but why quibble over technical details? The letters/syllabics and their accompanying creatures represent Seuss at his most delightful. And best of all, he leaves the door open for readers to create their own extension to the alphabet/syllabary!

More than mere whimsy, "On Beyond Zebra" is a truly mind-expanding book. Through fantasy and humor, Seuss challenges us to open our minds to new possibilities; he encourages us to tear down artificial walls that restrict our intellectual and creative growth. This book would be as useful in teaching pedagogical theory to college students as it is for entertaining children. "On Beyond Zebra" is a triumph.

Dr. Seuss was a prophet of unfettered imagination
If I were to start my own religion, this would probably be the most sacred text. Dr. Seuss possessed powers of pure imagination unequaled in all of children's literature, and this book is the most inspiring, mind-expanding example of his divine gift. Even more important than Cat in the Hat or The Lorax, every baby born into this world should be given a copy of On Beyond Zebra. Buy it and give it to a child you love today!

Mom read it to me, will read it to my nephew
I was in college before I was informed that Dr. Seuss books had "messages". I then thought about it, and decided that my professor was partially right and that this is one of the books with a "message". It teaches you not to stop at the obvious but to see if there is more to life.

Gloriously, the book is so good that you don't notice until you are in college and someone tells you. Which is A Good Thing. I hate books with "messages".

I'm 41, and I bought this book for my just-aquirred 5 year old nephew. Only I re-read it before giving it to him.

Art! and History?
Excellent beautifully illustrated book well worth the money. The illustrations and layout are extremely well done. This is easy reading that covers some terrtory not well documented anywhere else (Vietnam.) Some historical inaccuracies especially in the history of the manufacture of "Chinese" crackers in the 20th century. Overall an excellent job! Highly reccomended to anyone who has an interest in the subject, or who just likes the imagery of the old labels.

Beautiful drawings pack an illustrated history
Bright, colorful pages packed with color illustrations and photos chart the art and history of the firecracker, from their construction and advancement to the making of labels and items promoting them. Beautiful drawings pack an illustrated history which invites leisure browsers as much as researchers, and which is very highly recommended for general library collections.

Experience the Thrill
This book shows great insite into the history of the firecracker and the intricate artwork involved with the packaging of them. The clarity of the illustrations are wonderful, its hard to believe some of the labels are as old as they are. I highly recommend this book to anyone who can remember the excitement of being able to "set off" these firecrackers on the 4th of July, without worrying about breaking the law. Those of you who were not as lucky to experience this thrill, will definitely find this book fun.

First Inside Look at the Mafia
Many have denigrated Joe Valachi's testimony as being only the limited view of a street-level Mafia soldier, largely hearsay and often possibly erroneous. There is a certain amount of truth in these judgements. It is also true that, unlike earlier stool pigeon Abe Reles twenty years earlier, Valachi's testimony didn't directly send anyone to prison and some of what he told was old news anyway. On the other hand, Valachi was a "made member" of what he called Cosa Nostra for over thirty years and his criminal career dated to the 1920's. He may not have always been a major participant but he was there and saw the formation of the modern Mob as we know it. The Castellammarese War, Lucky Luciano, Dutch Schultz and Tom Dewey, Murder Inc., the Costello years, the intrigues of Vito Genovese, Valachi was on hand and his is the first detailed inside account of the formative years of the American Mafia. Compare The Valachi Papers to the nonsense written about the Mafia in the '50's. His expertise may have been limited to New York but before he turned no one outside the organization really knew anything about the Mafia, its bosses or its family structure. No one outside the organization had any idea that five crime "families" existed in New York or that the organization was divided into "families" until Valachi came along. Or that there was a national commission. Say what you will, Valachi exposed the Mob and put it in the spotlight for all to see. It's been there ever since and we have Joe to thank for this. And Peter Maas for turning his memoirs into a wonderful book.

Opening up the mafia to regular people
There are books that without them you would never have a basis for any other to follow. The Valachi Papers is the book that set the Mafia on its heels and allowed the world to see and finally get a look into the "real" underworld.

By far one the best reads I have had this year and certainly a must read for anyone weho thinks they know what the mafia is all about. This is the book that started it all and gave me my start into a whole world.

What this book does is tear down the walls of mystery and open your mind to new ideas about the mob. The book shows how it happened and what took place. Due to some of testimony being somewhat graphic younger reader may want to take caution before they begin the book.

The book is far better than the movie and knowing that this was told by someone on the inside makes it all that more exciting to read. Overall if you want to know where it all began, than look no further that this book.

Great book
I dont read much as I find books get boring after about half way through. I read this entire book within a week and never got boring.
