Alison's Puppy by Marion Dane Bauer is a beginning chapter book appropriate for children ages six through eight. In the book, Alison's birthday is coming up and she really wants a puppy. Her family members do not want a puppy because puppies are messy and noisy. Alison's grandfather comes up with a very creative way to help her birthday wish come true and still respect the opinions of the other members of her family. Alison's Puppy focuses on family and pets, themes that children will find very familiar. The storyline progresses quickly and holds the reader's interest and the surprise ending is funny and clever. The author does not describe the characters in great detail but readers learn about them through their dialogue and actions. The illustrations in the book as well as the layout, with small sections of text rather than large blocks of text, make this book a nice transition from picture books.

I bought all 3 Amanda Series Paper Dolls & they are wonderful. I felt like I was with Amanda on her journey to the west and through time. She describes the clothes they wore, the foods they ate, the hardships they faced. I was at her wedding to Matthew & when the children were born. I felt what life was like on the Texas frontier & her pain when Matthew had to serve in Civil War. I hope that Betty Mills does a series on Amanda's granddaughter, Mary Megan.

Wonderful illustrations! This is an excellent way for girls to learn Texas History.

Not only is the author great (I know her!) but this book explores an interesting topic. Those paper cuttings are unreal! I mean they are real, but they are so amazing!

A must have source of inspiration for all those interested in small scale to miniature contemporary illustrative sculptural work. Would appeal to model builders, contemporary doll artists & sculptors alike.

I'm 11 and My grandma and I had a great time with this book. I liked the pretty clothes. we also got "American Family of the 30's". I highly recommend it!

This is a great addition to Tierney's American Family series. It is one of my favorites! You see a typical surburban family, grandmother Pat and grandfather Ray, their son Walter and his wife Maude and their four children, all decked out in beautiful, Kennedy like Sunday best outfits. Before long, however, the mod sixties have hit, and even the parents are running around in crazy colors and Nehru jackets! (The grandparents are more sensible in cute matching colored outfits). My favorite style shown is the Summer of Love stylin' by the teenagers, with a shoking outfit worn by the second grade preteen (fishnet stockings on a seven year old!). The wedding is all fun, wild colors and grandma in a purple afro. This is a terrific story of the silliness of this era!!

I am 12 years old, and I already have a collection of more than 25 paperdoll books. This a wonderful book. It includes the grandparents, Thaddeus and Matilde, their son Benjamin & wife Lucinda, & their children, Montgomery(18), Jean Marie(15), Annabelle(10) & twins Elery and Clara(5). It shows the family during the beginning of the war, and includes outfits for all occasions. My favorite is the ball dress for Jean Marie & the one for Clara. I HIGHLY reccomend this book.

Tom Tinerney has written and drawn dozens of excellent books meant to educate children about what people of the past wore for various occasions.

This book is wonderful for those interested in the fashions of Federal America. It has fashions for every age tier, showing how a conservative older man's dress may differ from that of his adult son. It also shows the dilution of American fashions from European; even though they mirrored them, they lacked some of the extravagant wares.

Apart from that, it shows what your average family would wear, rather than that of the aristocracy or the very well off. The family featured is prosperous, but not rich.

Finally, the back pages have wonderful, accurate descriptions of all the fashions, why/where they originated, and descriptions of fabric, embellishments, accessories, and so on. This book is good for kids; great for fashion historians and re-creationists.

All of Tom Tierney's work is excellent, and these are no exception. The illustrations are colourful, historically accurate, and beautifully done. I use these in my history classes for illustration.
