Population Genetics, Molecular Evolution, and the Neutral Theory: Selected Papers
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (December, 1994)
Authors: Motoo Kimura, Naoyuki Takahata, and James F. Crow
Amazon base price: $32.50

A real treasure!
This is fantastic book, to be treasured by anyone interested in understanding (really understanding) molecular evolution, at a mathematical level. Most books on molecular evolution just give the formulas derived in this book, without proof. For the happy few who have the mathematical skills necessary to comprehend the derivations in the papers by Kimura, this book is a treasure. Kimura was not the first to apply the Kolmogorov (known by the physicists as Fokker-Plank) equation to the statistics of gene diffusion, but he did the most with it. He used it to derive the expression for the fixation probability of a gene in a finite population, used in most works on molecular evolution.

Probably the best paper included in this volume is "Diffusion Models in Population Genetics", a true mathematical tour de force. Also included in this volume are Kimura's pioneering works on the Neutral Theory of Evolution, and his early attempts at calibrating and using molecular clocks to measure the distance in time of evolutionary events. Most of these later works are of historical interest: of perennial value in this book are the mathematical derivations, which are still unsurpassed. Since mathematical skills are much reduced among most professionals (in part due to computer addiction), it will be a long time before this book is obsolete.

A great collection.
My only regret is that I had entered the field of evolutionary biology too late to have met Kimura. Although the neutral theory has perhaps had the most ranging effect, I would rather place his work with diffusion models as his most important contribution. This collection puts together the beautiful diffusion papers written by Kimura on the subjects of fixation probability, quantitative genetics and more -- including the hard-to-get work in Applied Probability! One of the most valued books in my collection.

Potter's Fields (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))

I only wish I could give 6 stars
This is it. This book is by far the most powerful thing I have ever read. I actually cried as I read the ending. This is the first book by Mr. Roderus that I have read but it will certainly not be the last. I have only 3 words of advise to you if you have not yet read this one. "BUY IT NOW !" This one will change your life.

A great achievement
In my opinion few writers can handle a novel where very few characters are onstage. Mr Roderus has given us a great novel. I read Potter's Fields at one sitting and I am sure that you will too. I was right there with Joe Potter in that line shack. I looked around and saw how miserable and ornery and cold it was and how a man carries more than just his emotions around with him. And how the tenderness of a woman is something that man ignores to his detriment. In short, this book is great -- buy it.

Proper Theology = Proper Living
There is quite the movement in today's evangelical circles to the idea of "practical theology." Living what you believe, or 'walking the walk, if you will. What this movement sorely misses however is that to "live what you believe," you must KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE! Ryle deftly walks the line between Systematic and Practical theologies, constantly forcing the reader to stop and examine his/her own life. What is the point of theology if it doesn't impact your walk? Ryle challenges the "talk" and the "walk" at the same time. Not recommended for those who do not wish to engage in "Self-Examination," but highly recommended for those who truly wish to make Truth the reflection in the mirror of their lives.

One of the greatest Christian writers of the 20th century
Of all the books I have read in the past few years, no one has influenced my life as Bishop J.C. Ryle has. His writtings give the perfect balance of Law and grace and will help you to better understand the Christian life to a deeper and richer level. I am very thankful for the writings of this man. I would recommend his other works including "Old Paths." His expository commentaries on the Gospels are wonderful, too. Find out why J.C. Ryle has impacted Christians for over 100 years.

Lacan and the father
Lacan's seminars are superior to his articles because he clearly is addressing an audience, and needs to make himself understood, but he has already anticipated all of his students questions, as if he could read their minds: "I know what you're thinking." The argument of the third seminar is easy to summarize: the psychotic, because foreclosed from the father, faces a hole in the imaginary that is filled by the symbolic (or is it the other way around?), hence the hallucinations and voices. The psychotic always imagines that somewhere the big Other resides, in this world, like the man who broke into the US capital because there was a time machine inside that was trying to control his mind. The psychotic is in fact unable to distinguish the small from the big other. Lacan is always thought to be a little mad himself, something of a fraud, "il gagne beaucoup d'argent," and even Heidegger gave up reading Ecrits because he couldn't make sense of it, and he does make something of a display of his learning (not so much in this seminar). That said, there is something to Lacan, and eventually he will get his due, and outside the narrow circle of his devotees.

A Lacan to be Read
The work of Jacques Lacan is infamous for the often obtuseness of its language and presentation. It is often said that the reader must work hard at Lacan to reach a glimmer of understanding. The work of Dr Russell Grigg as translator to this edition certainly gives the reader a head start. Dr Grigg address the work of Lacan from a new perspective of the 21st century, nolonger happy for the work to remain arcane and cloistered from the reading public, but he throws open the windows of further understanding for those willing to look and read closer the work of this French master. An excellent work.

Wonderful Ideas!
As a scrapbooker, I wanted to learn new ways to decorate my memory album pages. This book was just what I needed. It's very descriptive with great color photos. I would have never imagined all the things that could be made with one or two punches. For example this book shows how a heart punch can make a chicken, mouse, butterfly, flower, pumpkin & angel for your scrapbook. There are so many ideas in this one!! I'm looking forward to Volume 2 to get even more ideas.

absolutely INSPIRING
This book has some of the most inspiring punch out designs I've seen. Whether your into scrapbooking or just helping your kids with their art projects, there are some very cool ideas in this book, your imagination will soar (my favorite parts of the book are the three dimensional flower scenes anyone can make!) Great Book!

Delightful!
Chloe Field's father gambled away his fortune and planned to marry her off to pay the debts. Instead, Chloe left and found employment with her childhood friend, William Seabrook. William hired her to be a companion to his hateful sister, Laura. Chloe needed to save enough money to allow her to purchase a modest cottage for herself, so she stuck it out no matter what Laura did.

When news of her father's death arrived, Chloe could not help but feel guilty, especially since foul play was suspected. If she had let her father marry her off (basically SELL her) he might still be alive. She had hoped to someday reconcile with him. Laura continued to be someone I, as the Reader, loved to hate. Enter the hero of the story!

Captain Andrew Seabrook had known Chloe since childhood. Eleven years before, he had almost seduced her! This was something he had never forgiven himself for. He had been sent home to recover from a leg wound received at Waterloo. Quietly, he was also to investigate the murder of Chloe's father. He did not know Chloe had been in love with him all these years, but felt the passion from eleven years ago return in full force!

***** Delightful! I feel this to be the best work of the author, Allison Lane, thus far! The author seems to get better with each novel that is published! I highly recommend this one! A KEEPER! *****

an enjoyable but somber read
"The Purloined Papers" is another installation in the Seabrook saga, and this time the focal point of the novel is that of the complicated relationship between Chloe Fields and Captain Andrew Seabrook. Laura Seabrook's (also seen in "The Notorious Widow" & "The Rake and the Wallflower") crazed machinations to stop her brother's marriage to Martha Truitt (the daughter of a prosperous merchant), and the mysterious death of Chloe's estranged father also features into this interesting and compelling novel.

When Chloe Field's father (Sir Nigel Fields) lost his fortune at the gambling table, rather than allow him to marry her off so that he could pay off his debts, Chloe left home in order to find employment. Luckily for her, her childhood friend, William Seabrook, was in desperate need of someone competent to be a companion to his somewhat crazed and unlikeable sister, Laura. And while life with Laura has been no picnic, Chloe has managed to save quite a bit of money (mostly bribes from Laura's brothers-in-law so that she will not leave her post), so that her dream of being able to live peacefully in a small cottage one day has almost become a reality. And then two things happen that changes the course her life seems to be set on: her father dies suddenly and under suspicious circumstances; and Captain Andrew Seabrook, her childhood friend with whom she has been in love with for years, but with whom she parted badly, returns to Exeter. Now, Chloe must somehow not only cope with Laura's obnoxious shenanigans and the loss of a father with whom she never reconciled with, but also maintain a cool facade so that Andrew never learns that she is still in love with him...

Andrew has returned home in order to recover from a leg wound he sustained at Waterloo. A career soldier, he is weary of war and would dearly love to sell out, except that he isn't equipped to be anything else but a soldier. And if that's not depressing enough, watching Chole working as his nasty sister's companion is definitely enough to bring on a case of the megrims! And then there is also the guilt he feels for having almost seduced Chloe 11 years ago, and the horrid manner in which they parted. Now, however seeing Chloe everyday (esp since he is investigating her father's death), Andrew comes to the realisation that he has never stopped loving Chloe. But can he get Chloe to forgive him for past misdeeds, and to open her heart to him again?

"The Purloined Papers" was a truly engrossing read -- such a lot happens in this 200 odd page romance novel. And eventhough the romance subplot was a little marginalised in favour of exploring the relationships that other characters had with each other in this novel (not to mention the murder subplot), I didn't feel this to be a flaw at all. Andrew and Chloe have quite a lot to work out, and I liked that Allison Lane allowed for their relationship to develop slowly, giving them time to become close friends again, before broaching the romance that fairly simmers between them. Chloe and Andrew complement each other very well, and one cannot but help admiring Chloe for making a stab at independence, no matter how unpalatable the course. I'm not sure if there will be any more Seabrook novels, Ms Lane has managed to tie up everything neatly and satisfactorily (esp where nasty Laura is concerned). "The Purloined Papers" falls more into the 'dark' Regency category than the light hearted drawing room one, but it is an engrossing and compelling nonetheless. A truly enjoyable read!

Thistle Howl grows up (just a little bit).
Wow, I loved Mercer Mayer's Critter books when I was a kid! I never ever heard of Mayer's Critter's of the Night books though! I loved this one. Littlest Howl Family(Mayers version of the Addams Family)member, Thistle Howl is a little girl critter that is tired of being so small. When she wishes she could grow, her aunt, a wisened witch in the family, goes to great lengths to grant her niece's wish. Auntie Bell is hard of hearing though, and her attempts to replace Thistle's frown with a smile are hilarious!
I shared this book with 16 preschoolers at a public library during storytime. What a fantastic read! Mayer's little critters are just like the little critters we all adore in our own families today. Thistle is no exception. Her craving to be big is a familiar theme that captures the attention of every child. The illustrations are even more fantastic and fill the story with color and amusing accents. Even without the incredible pictures, the story is a must have for every child that wishes he or she could be just a little bit bigger.

Purple Pickle Juice is howlin with fun
Hi my name is Charlee,I live in Newport MN, Cottage Grove MN, and Spooner WI. I'm ten I have a niece and nephew that sleep over alot and at bed time they sometimes have me read to them. Wow! Just What I Needed!
After writing a book and then reading all the other books on how to promote it, I was stumped. I had great ideas on which outlets and reviewers to approach, but I had no idea what to send them. Do I send a book to review with a quick note? Do I send a full package of materials that's longer than the book itself? What kind of information did the media and bookstores want to see? These are all the questions I had, and this book answered each and every one. By the time I finished reading Putting It On Paper, I had every element of my press kit created, and the results are outstanding. I've already had numerous media outlets contact me as a result of my press kit, and my book just got picked up by a large distribution house. Plus, I was able to arrange for three book signings with local bookstores. I highly recommend Putting It On Paper to anyone who has published a book.

The right way to do it
I wish everyone who sent me a book for review had read this book. "Putting It On Paper" contains all the basics of what a bookseller should and should not include in their press kits. Areas covered by the book include the media kit, the cover letter, the press release, mock interviews, author biographical information, a book sell sheet, a catalog sheet, extra sales materials, and even writing an article to achieve back door sales. The bottom line is that you may have the best book ever published but if readers don't know it exists then they will not buy it. That is where promotional pieces come in. Getting the book reviewed, getting distributors to carry it, or getting independent bookstores to sell it, no matter what your marketing direction you will need a promotional piece. The advice is thorough and detailed including sample layouts and templates. If you want your book to sell, "Putting It On Paper" is the road map to creating the right promotional pieces the first time and a recommended read.

Great basic book with good variety
Clear easy to follow instructions with good variety of planes that make a great airshow.

Great instructions, fun planes!
My son, who was six when we got this book, has folded every plane in it several times. The instructions are clear and don't really require reading, and he could build all the planes with almost no help from me. The stickers included in the middle are fun and really jazz up the planes. What a fun book! My son is such a paper airplane fanatic now, and I know we owe a lot of his interest to this book.

A "Must Read" For Young Children
This is the all-time favorite for my toddler... within the pages you'll laugh, you'll love, you'll hold your breath, you'll cheer! McCue's illustrations are (as always) second to none. Somehow she makes the little characters jump to life from the pages, and they often times land right in your heart. Here's a book you'll want to buy for every little one on your list!

Quaky book
This is a cute book about Quack, a little duckling who is always last. Eventhough my daughter is only two, she loves this story and the heroic ending. This book is wonderfully illustrated and is perfect for the Step 2 reader.
