A keeper
I've read the book and listened to the audio cassette, and it's hard for me to pick which one I like more. The book has more stories, it's true, but the cassette has Donald's lovely Southern drawl. He has an infectious manner of telling that makes car trips--no matter how long or short--out and out fun. I've never laughed or cried so hard as at Listening for the Crack of Dawn. The last story, "A Different Drummer," is by far my favorite, since it makes me do both. Donald Davis is truly one of America's best storytellers, for kids, teenagers, and adults. Buy this title, in whatever format, and you won't be sorry!

A wonderful book for the whole fanily
Donald Davis is a wonderful writer and story teller. My children love to hear his stories as well as I. It makes a long trip in the car much more fun.

My favorite audiobook of all time
I don't think anyone can listen to Donald Davis tell his Different Drummer story and not be touched by it. Just it alone is worth the price of the set of cassettes. You also get to hear LSMFT (yes, that's the title of the story), which has a nearly perfect ending. Each is a story so good that you wish you could forget it, so that you'd have the pleasure of listening to it again for the first time.

The McKeown books are great.
Obviously, I haven't read this latest edition of the price guide since it won't be available until April. I have purchased two previous editions and they were worth the money. I look forward to the release of the latest edition. Every camera collector should have this price guide. Unlike Lind's List Camera Price Guide and Master Data Catalog, this book gives good information and pictures to help you identify cameras and grow in knowledge. I haven't utilized my Lind's book, but I take my McKeown's book on every collecting expedition.

Comments on Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras
Like previous editions, this exceptionally well organized, indexed and illustrated book is the leader in its field. It is a must for serious collectors of classic cameras and related items.

McKeown Is One Of The Ultimate Authorities on Cameras
Jim McKeown's books are the most comprehensive sources of accurate information on cameras in the world. Period. Other books may give more information on specific cameras, but if you are to have but one source to refer to,choose McKeown. He will never disappoint you.
Another wonderful camera expert and writer (they don't always go together) is Ivor Matanle. His two books are treasures. But if you want facts, go with McKeown. You will return over and over to his book. Speaking face to face with him is most rewarding. You realize you are learning from one of the world authorities.
Wonderful pictures, camera values (prices) rarity, etc. This book contains cameras even experts haven't heard about. But McKeown is the expert of experts, and you will keep this large, heavy, over 900 page book near just for the fun of reading it. Am I enthused? Yes! I have bought his books since the 4th edition in 1983-84, and always been pleased.
A lengthy review? Yes, but this book deserves much praise!

Excellent Book. A must have for everyone.
This is my favourite origami book. It has a great deal of variety due to the fact that several authors were involved. Many brilliant models are clearly diagrammed including the Kawasaki rose, Sonobe unit and complex stegosaurus. Also origami maths features in the book. An excellent book for beginners and experts.

I love it!
This book is absolutely wonderful. The first 20 to 25 models are modular type things that are very interesting. You learn how to make shapes you didn't know that existed. Afterward there are models that are by other authors.Though, above all the ones I have made I like the rose the most. When I saw it I told myself I had to make it. And on my first try I made it, although up close it was kind of messy. Afterwards I learned how to make it without putting so many creases and it is truely awesome. (now it sits with Engel's butterfly on it.) But the book does lean over more towards the advanced. What I'm saying is that I've made Peter Engel's Butterfly and The scorpion of Robert Lang, but I don't think I I'll put myself up to the 900 unit sphere-like shape in Origami for the Connoisseur. If you are a very dedicated origami shape folder, you would definately like it. But, even if you're not, then buy the book for the Kawasaki rose. (In my review on Engel's Origami:From Angelfish to Zen I mentioned that I hadn't made the butterfly. Well not too long befor I wrote this review I figured out how to.)

Excellent book.
Very good book. It encompasses quite a large variety of styles, from multiple modellers. It doesn't just show you how to make certain models, it attempts to give the folder a greater understanding of the mechanics of origami. Many of the more interesting models are fairly advanced, and some of the diagrams are confusing if you don't have an idea of what they're trying to do before they do it, so I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.

Great for artistic kids
I have such fond memories of this book, which I used to pore over a child, about 27 years ago now I guess.
I always remember the part about mixing colous and I'm absolutely sure it played a huge part in my early interest in art. I'm now an Art Gallery Director, so who knows where that next Christmas present might take your child?

My favorite book ever
This book is so much fun. I had it as a young girl, and I remember using it for hours at a time. It teaches different seasons and all the months are highlighted to color in and hang up. There are games to play, finger puppets to make ect. With all your favorite Richard Scarry characters you and your children will enjoy this book rain or shine.

i love and emember this well!
My sister and I were so excited when we got this book, and we never forgot about it...We are 33 years old now, and it has kind of become our way of saying something is "fun"....whenever we do a craft or art project, we compare it to this book, "doesn't this remind you of when we played with Richard Scarry's rainy day book?" And its always a little bittersweet, because we no longer have our book. Imagine my delight, to find an old copy of the book, here on amazon! I can't wait for it to come in the mail, and I will surprise my sister!

If all craft books were as attractive, brilliantly conceived, and downright amusing as this one, the craft world would be a better place. Glorious projects, beautiful photos, thorough instructions, and terrific coverage of all the groundwork make for lovely viewing, enjoyable reading, and endless inspiration.

Master decoupeur Durwin Rice is not only a true artist with scissors and glue, he's a lively writer whose sense of humor and deft handling of the subject makes even the most mundane tasks (like surface preparation or sealing a finished piece) sound like fun. He debunks the obsessiveness with which "Old Decoupage" was created and which still puts off some would-be decoupeurs today, such as the tendency to apply 30 or more coats of sealant ("You want to protect your work from scratches--not Hurricane Andrew") or the inclination for fanatical cutting ("You are master of the image, not the image of you"). He covers all manner and size of objects with his wondrous creations: plates, vases, trays, eggs, tables, cabinets, walls, ceilings, even the refrigerator. Clearly this is a man obsessed, not with the needlessly labor-intensive approach of yesteryear, but with the urge to decoupage the world. This is not only a lesson on how to create spectacular decoupage; it's a lesson on how to produce a masterful craft book. --Amy Handy

Now That's a Decoupage Book!
Durwin Rice has put together an informative, humorous and inspirational decoupage book. If you've never tried decoupage before, you will find clear instructions and tips for a successful project practically on every page. Mr. Rice also shows the immense diversity of design that decoupage offers. In his world, it seems that nothing is off-limits for decoupaging! Check out his kitchen! Sure to please and satisfy, this book is a winner!

New Decoupage is beautiful!
There are so many good ideas to try in this book. It is full of delightful pictures and is written in a most humorous fashion. Not your typical how-to book at all. I loved it!

Great "How To"
I'm a beginner at this but I found this book to have really great instruction on how to do decoupage well plus all sorts of info on the tools of the trade such as scissors and glues and where to find images. It really had everything I needed to get started and actually make some pretty neat things (I decorated a gloass plate for my aunt and she was quite impressed) Lots of incredible sample works which were way over my head......someday I suppose I'll be able to do some like that! Pictures throughout are great & instructions are clear.

Fun Picture Book All Will Enjoy
Meet Nate the Great, the neighborhood detective. He's just finishing up breakfast (pancakes, of course) when Annie calls. She's lost the picture of her dog Fang that she just painted and wants help finding it. So Nate goes over and helps her hunt down the leads. But can he solve the mystery?

I remember this book well from my childhood, and it's still good for a few grins today. Nate has some great one-liners, especially when read with a Joe Friday monotone. The plot is very creative if a bit obvious at the end to adults. The pictures only add to the pleasure.

This is the strongest book from the series. Children will ask for it over and over; I know I did. Parents will enjoy the humor and characters as well. Buy it today for read aloud pleasure.

Hilarious children's book in verse
"Nate the Great" is, in a word, great. In Nate the Great, Marjorie W. Sharmat has created a hero for young boys. He acts very independently, walking around the neighborhood by himself, making his own pancakes, etc. but he wears his rubbers, and he *always* leaves a note for his mother. Marc Simont really comes through in his laid-back illustrations (some shaded, some in color) that reveal important points of the case, but do not force things down the readers' throats. Also, like the writer, Simont manages humor without going overboard.

As in the best children's books, the writing style is simple yet powerful, like a haiku. Although the "Nate the Great" series is written in full sentences, Sharmat has slyly created a wonderful introduction to poetry-that-doesn't-rhyme with his carefully placed line breaks and page breaks. Here is the first page of text: "My name is Nate the Great. / I am a detective. / I work alone. / Let me tell you about my last case: / I had just eaten breakfast. / It was a good breakfast."

The first book in the Nate the Great series is by far the best, because the funniest parts are in the character development that, of course, takes a back seat in later volumes. The establishing shots of and paragraphs talking about Nate, Annie, Fang, and Rosamond are absolutely hilarious. Continuity watchdogs will note Fang's slightly more menacing nature (and color change) and Annie's lost fascination for yellow in later books. Of course, kids won't notice or care.

The official reviews don't make it clear which books in the series are actually in this volume. The cover is definitely not the original cover of book 1. You might want to look into that before buying.

This series is great fun for little kids and whoever is lucky enough to be reading to them. Get all the Nate you can find!

Nate the Great
Would you want to be a detective? Well i do. Nate the Great works like a detective. He likes to eat pancakes. He works alone. And he has so many friens.
I like Nate the Great books because Nate the Great tells
some jokes and he does some funny things.
I recommend Nate the Great books to anyone who likes Nate the Great books because Nate the Great is so funny and he tells some jokes to anyone.

Add this book to your "Magic Treehouse" collection.
This is an exciting book. Jack and Annie go back in time and end up at a castle. I liked the part where Jack fell out of the castle and into the moat. They meet a mysterious knight. Jack and Annie find another "M" clue at the end of the story.

You wont be able to put this one down!
Jack and his sister Annie, find a tree house in the tallest tree in the woods near their home in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania. Upon investigation they find that the tree house is filled with books, some old and dusty and some shiney and new. They also find that the tree house is Magic! They find that just by pointing at a picture in a book and making a wish that they could actually go to the very place pictured in the book!! As Jack and Annie go through their adventures Jack is always taking notes in his notebook, just like a scientist. Like "fuzzy skin" and "mouth like scissors" for the pteranodon in "Dinosaurs Before Dark". And if they ever get in a jam they can always refer to the book. In "The Knight at Dawn" Jack reads the captions under the pictures in the books to learn more about whats going on in the castle and when they find themselves trapped in the castle he finds a map of the castle.....maybe they will find a way to escape!

The Knight at Dawn is so cool
I liked this book because they get away from guards and find a trapdoor in the castle. I liked when the splashes came in the moat. I think this book is the best and everybody should read it.

A good book on origami boxes.
This book has readable instructions and (mostly) helpful diagrams. Like many origami books, the instructions follow a winding pattern across the page, but the path is clearly marked so this is okay. The folding instructions are reasonably clear, but the 3D pictures (when you actually start making the paper into the corners of a box) are not always easy to interpret. Once you stare at them for a while, they usually become clear, though. My biggest complaint is the instructions for joining the pieces together. More details, please! So far I've been able to figure them out, but they are a bit tricky. With those warnings in mind, I definitely recommend this book. The boxes are beautiful, and functional.

Great book from the queen of boxes!
Tomoko is certainly the premier box folder in origami, and it's wonderful to have a lot of her designs in English now. I love her work so much I bought a lot of her Japanese books and would just work them out from the diagrams. This book has a lot of my favorite boxes, most are what I would consider Intermediate to Advanced to fold. Boxes are a lot of fun to do, each piece will not take that long to fold, but doing all the modules and then fitting them together will take you about an hour! They make wonderful gifts, small jewelry boxes, etc.

simply great
Some reviewers have commented on the instructions: let me say from my experience with origami instructions and illustrations, this book is definitely on the easy-to-understand end of the spectrum! I would consider myself an advanced beginner folder, and I have had absolutely NO problems making any of these boxes, which should be sufficient testament to the ease of instruction. If you're new to modular folding, do what I did to practice, and cut down some regular copy paper to 8 1/2 inch squares--your pieces will be nice and big and you can see what's going on. I just dig up a pile from the recycling bin at work before I head home.... You will be pleasantly surprised at the range of boxes you can make with this book. And that's really the joy of unit origami! One warning: it's ADDICTIVE AS HECK! Tomoko Fuse is the queen of modular origami, and this book is a reason why!

Memories of a golden, too
I found this book at the university bookstore a few weeks after losing my own 13 year old golden-retriever. As I began, tears immediately began to fall but soon they were replaced by smiles and bursts of laughter as I was pulled into the lives of the characters and the wonderful dog, and I was flooded with memories of my own Baron boy. This book is for anyone who has been blessed enough to share their lives with a special golden retreiver, or anyone who doubts the joy a dog can bring. Vanderbilt's book is an honest, from-the-heart portrayal that captures the spirit of the breed.

A Brilliant and Moving Book!
I will admit right off the bat that the Chatham neighborhood that Amy and her human family inhabit is also my neighborhood. But I am sad to say that I never met Amy who sounded like a wonderful dog. All dogs are wonderful, in my book, and certainly in Arthur Vanderbilt's book "Golden Days." This is one of those tales where, although you know how it ends, you still weep at the end. Months later, certain scenes-- such as Amy's unusual love of bananas-- stick in the memory so that you feel you really knew Amy. "Golden Days" is a book about a golden retriever and it's also about those golden days of summer in a certain special place that Arthur Vanderbilt knows very well. I recommend this book for anyone who has ever cared for a dog. For anyone who has ever loved Cape Cod. In fact, I recommend this book, which is profoundly moving without being sappy, to everyone!

Touching
I laughed and cried when I read this book. Vanderbilt truly depicts life with a Golden. My son was devastated when we lost our twelve-year old Golden; I sent him this book so he could, like the author, reflect on the joy of having one of these incredible dogs in our life. The author truly touches the sacred moments we share with these beautiful creatures. A must read for Golden owners.

My gateway to the origami world
This was my first origami book. It flows from simple to intermediate to complex with no problem. The diagrams are the clearest there are (although I wished they ALL showed shading, only reason why I'm not giving five stars), and the models range from the cute (Penguin) to the original (Dog in a Doghouse) to the complex (Praying Mantis) to the REALLY complex (Crab). If you're a beginner, pick this book, and slowly evolve as you turn each page. Trust me, you'll thank me for it!

Splendid, Scintillating, A must for origami fan.
This book contains dozens of origami animals, ranging from med to highly-complex. At first we may doubt this is just another routine four-leg animals. However, two authors give us models unexpectedly various, and most of the figurations are wonderful. We have some of the most beauitful modeling here: A crab, a eagle in full-spread wing(with the feathers!), A dog in the doghouse(single paper), A very vivid rabbit. And the folding steps are full of wonder. The only disadvantage in this book is that for a new folder the diagrams are very neat and succinct, usually Several steps combined in one diagram. But this deserves since this book contains so many models and they are arranged by level of difficulty. This is a must for any origami fan.

Absolute excellence... Don't Miss!
Even though the final models are *extremely* complex, the book begins with very interesting texts about origami origins, evolution and approaches to creation; and the models go in progression from the very simplest ones. So actually this is an excellent "transition" book - if you have some experience with origami and have the ambition to try more complex stuff, there cannot be a better book than this one to guide you. The diagrams are crystal clear, and so are the indications. I got this book when I was 11 (I'm 24 now), and it is still every bit as amazing an enjoyable as back then!!
