Matisse - cut paper design postcardsWhat a great selection of Matisse cut paper work! I like that these postcards can be removed easily from the book for use, or display.
Matisse cut paper design postcardsThis is a great book if you are looking for samples of Matisse's cut paper work. The postcards have perforated edges and can be easily removed from the book. I put magnetic backgrounds on them to hang in my classroom so that children could see them when we focused on Matisse in art class.

A humorous accounting of the first pilot in WW1With no airports at the time, and planes flying where a sight to see with very few out there. The reaction of people seeing one landing in their feilds and the pilot asking if they had any fuel or help in getting directions and turning the plane around keeps you laughing. Not to mention his dareing antics preformed by accident

A Beautiful Tom Tierney BookThis paper doll book is great for teachers or people who enjoy the study of medieval culture and the history of costume. Tierney's drawings are lavish and nicely detailed, with a variety of costume styles for different classes and eras. Teachers will find these dolls a great visual aid for teaching students about the Middle Ages, and all readers will find the accompanying notes helpful and informative. This is a great series, and these books are well worth the price!
Medieval costumes! This was the first one of many of Tom's work that I've bought. I'm hooked, he does very pretty and! accurate work. He has given me more inspriation for my costume making than any other source. Plus, if I ever get bored I can always entertain myself by cutting them up and play "dollies". The price is the icing on the cake!

A fun book for all!My son loves this book. There are a few words (midnight, knock, night) that might be difficult for kids that are truly just starting to sound words out. But, if they don't mind having a grown-up help with those few words, they can sound out most of the rest by themselves.
If you read this to your children, you just can't help using a fun voice for "Groad" the cook.
This book along with others in the "Critters of the Night" series are a lot of fun for the kids. My son just turned six and has loved having them read to him for a long time as well as looking at and discussing the entertaining illustrations. Now he enjoys reading them himself. "Critters of the Night" and "Little Critter" books belong on every child's bookshelf!
Midnight Snack (Mercer Mayer's Critters Of The Night)This is a great beginning reader book! The cast of monsters appeal to children without being too scary. The colorful illustrations make this a fun book to read. The rhyming story is perfect for early elementary school childern learning rhyming sounds. My six-year-old felt a real sense of accomplishment when he was able to read this book himself. He even choose this book to take to school to read to his class. We also like "No Howling In The House" and "Purple Pickle Juice" in this series of readers.

I Love Dolly Dingle!Dolly Dingle is an adorable little girl. I love cuting out the costumes and dolls and playing with them. There are 14 different themes in this book that will allow you to use your imagination in many ways. I especially like Dolly's pet kitties and dogs. And Dolly Dingle even has her own paper dolls with their own clothing! I can't believe how inexpensive this book is and I can't wait to buy more Dolly Dingle books.
Dolly Dingle Is Now A Star In Our Home! This is an adorable facsimilie book of paper dolls from the early 1900's printed on heavy card stock. These rosy-cheeked, cherubic dolls are similar in appearance to the Campbell Soup Kids, having the same artist. There are over 30 dolls with an abundance of clothing and costumes. The dress and costume designs are seperated into themes such as Dolly Dingle's Patriot Party, Fancy Dress, Flower Girl at Aunty's Wedding, Christmas Party During War-Time, A Thanksgiving Dinner, Washington's Birthday Party, etc. This book not only teaches something of our country's history but it also exercises fine motor skills in cutting and dressing. Best of all, though, it's just plain old-fashioned fun!

From the author, March 4, 2,000An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test. 70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testers reillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters to Causcasians. I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that many children will identify with my characters who are courageous and successful and well-liked. Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold. I know from my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with the characters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroes turned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have been distracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrations shows the brothers in the story playing baseball. Eight books about the characters have been published to date (there will be a new one next year)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testers developed their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book; they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error in race), much less read it. It's quite possible that a child who had read the book would give different answers to the test questions based on his knowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children are stigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appears that the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize good readers. Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know what kind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net
I like this bookI think it's a great book. So I want other people to read it. Because Julian tells lots of stories and it's lots of fun reading it.

Stupendous QualityAll the paper models are expertly designed. They go together perfectly, even if you aren't big on following directions. Pieces are printed on both sides so you can't make a mistake. Tabs fit perfectly into slots, score lines make folding a breeze and the finished buildings look pretty cool. Rest assured, there's no running water and it's a bit hard to get fire insurance on paper houses. You'll still be living better than your mouse. A fun gift and the houses come out looking quite swank!
Everything a mouse could wish forVery clever idea. Excellent graphics and easy-to-follow directions. Makes a great gift for that special computer person. And, for all the Dave Barry fans, this is just not a "guy thing." It's a definite buy

If the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions a mummy is a ghastly, bandaged creature staggering forth from a tomb, it's time to take a look at Mummies and Pyramids. This entertaining and enlightening research companion to Mary Pope Osborne's Mummies in the Morning is perfect for readers who developed an insatiable taste for the mysteries and science of ancient Egypt while reading about Jack and Annie's time- and space-traveling adventures at the pyramid of Queen Hutepi. Guided by siblings Jack and Annie, stars of the Magic Tree House series, the easy-to-read text offers up the secrets of pharaohs, hieroglyphic writing, the building of pyramids, how and why mummies were made, the Book of the Dead, Egyptian gods and goddesses, tomb treasures--and tomb robbers--and more. Divided into chapters covering everyday life in ancient Egypt, religion, funerals, and the most famous mummy of all, King Tutankhamen, the book also offers suggestions on how children can do their own research. Plentiful black and white illustrations and reproductions of Egyptian art make learning extra fun, as do regular appearances by Jack and Annie as they explain details of the text or offer commentary ("Not fair!" Annie says, "Only boys could go to school and become scribes!"). Stimulating and lively, this research guide is a stellar introduction to a subject guaranteed to intrigue young readers. Robert Hass, Adrienne Rich, John Hollander, and many other excellent poets came to national prominence early in their careers through the Yale Series of Younger Poets. The 1996 winner, chosen by James Dickey, was Talvikki Ansel. Dickey writes that Ansel's poems evoke "the heat, the closeness, the mystery, and the terrible fear of the undisclosed." The writing is beautiful, and often plays with the space between expectation and reality, as in "In Fragments, In Streams." Ansel writes: "Haley's Comet crossed the jungle sky / that April, six mornings in a row / I woke to hike out to a clearing / and never saw it." The constant expectation of "days fading / in and out of showers," the shock of biting into an apple seed ("almond taste / cyanide, the bitter hint, liqueur taste"), and other revelations of the natural world fill these pages.

A Book To Return ToI love these poems, and find myself returning to them again and again over the years. Talvikki Ansel combines the acute precision of a scientific eye with shimmering, translucent, finely-honed language. Her mastery of the sonnet form in the second and third sections of the volume seems virtually effortless -- as if the poems have simply transcended the rigors of form. These are poems of fierce and delicate inquiry (a study of bats, the dissection of a bird, the exploration of a pear down to its very core, the unraveling of the memory of a season spent in the Amazon Rainforest); poems of travel, explorers, and exploration; and poems of being forever changed by the processes of inquiry and exploration, like Caliban, or Elizabeth Bishop's Robinson Crusoe. Indeed, perhaps Ansel is, or will be, our Elizabeth Bishop of the new century. Ansel's poetic voice is clear, warmly modulated, and threaded throughout with marvelous flickers of quiet whimsy and humor. These are poems that resonate and linger. I highly recommend this book.
She shells see shells by the sea sureTelvicki Ansel communicates the multiple awareness of self, nature, and the unmanefest. She can have you hold a pear as she has held it, and feel the humorous frustration of raising miniature horses.
"My Shining Archipelago" is a real find.
