A lovely book for anyone interested in costume and history
I've been collecting paper dolls for years, and this is one of the best books I've found. There are 6 dolls (4 women and 2 men) with a nice variety of costumes. The clothes are beautifully drawn and obviously well-researched (but kind of tricky to cut out). As an easterner, I know almost nothing about western history, and the diary entries that tell the stories of two sisters who become Harvey Girls are very interesting and definitely made me want to learn more about them.

Beautiful paperdolls from the Goldern Era of train travel.
A story/paperdoll book that even adults love

A great short chapter book!
I really enjoyed this book because it was a fantasy book! For readers that like exciting adventurous short books this is the book for you. I really enjoyed the parts where: Felix mind read with the princess frog; The elf came alive from the magical moon stone; Mr. Nubble made his yard into a monster museum.

The worst part about the book was when it ended!
We liked "Felix and the 400 Frogs" because our class is studying about ponds and pond creatures (like frogs). We also liked the main character Felix because he was nice and he was always helping the Frog Princess. Also, we liked the book because the authors put a lot of detail in it. They also put some hard words in it that we didn't know so that we could learn new words. The book was full of interesting things like someone kissing a frog and interesting characters like the mean Mr. Nubble. Our favorite parts were when Mr. Nubble called Felix names and when Felix and the Frog Princess were trying to find the Magic Moonstone. The worst part about the book was when it ended! We would recommend the book to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th graders. We give the book 5 stars! Mrs. Justice's 1999 3rd Grade Class, Jersey Shore Elementary in Jersey Shore, PA

The Best File Organization Book
I just bought a bunch of books on file organization (e.g. Hemphill, Morgenstern, Kate Kelly and Melinda Mitchell) and this was by far the best. Why? All the other books concentrated on giving general advice and the motivational aspects of getting organized. Dorff's book is really a specific "how to" book, giving you a step-by-step procedure for designing, creating and maintaining a file system.

The system seems a little intimidating at first; my wife just about laughed me out of the house when I described it to her. But I have completely redone my office files and my home filing system using her method and it works!

I wish she would update her book and include a more computer based approach. Here are my suggested modifications based on having implemented it twice:
1. Start by typing all your folder subjects into the 2nd column of an Excel spreadsheet. Then it is easy to sort them alphabetically.
2. Do everything A-Z and don't worry about using the Prefix Method. If you want to keep a bunch of folders together, just use more than one letter when you create the identifiers in column 1 of your spreadsheet. e.g. MAN101, MAN102 for all your product manuals. Then sort by column 1. In a way, you are creating a "prefix" system within the overall alphabetical system. I moved all my TRR (Travel and Recreation) folders to a different location, but I only have to deal with a single spreadsheet.
3. The 3rd and 4th columns of your spreadsheet are the "see also" and "see" additions to the index that make it work so well
4. In addition to the numbers, add the subject to the folder tabs. Most of the time, I don't want to bother looking in the index. Also, I created a bunch of tables within Word that are just the right size to fit into the plastic tabs. Buy multcolored card stock at your local OfficeMax and you can now created color coded tabs.
5. Print out your excel spreadsheet as your index, leaving some blank rows between each letter, e.g. A101,A102,A103, 3 blank rows, B101, etc. This way you pencil in additions without messing with the spreadsheet.

The system is very easy to manage, once you get it set up. It is flexible and should work for almost any purpose. Her chapter on setting up a way of dealing with "pending" papers is priceless. Even my wife adopted that method to deal with all the papers that she deals with as an elementary school teacher.

If you already have a pretty good filing system that seems to work well for you, just use Pat's system to create an index for it. It shouldn't take more than an few hours to enter all of your existing file subjects into the spreadsheet. Then just create the numbering system and the cross referencing columns.

Every person who has come into my office after implementing this system has commented on how much bigger my office looks with all the piles of papers gone.

MESSIES, sit up and pay attention!
If you save clippings and articles that you know will some day be important, then can't remember where you filed them, this is the book for you. If you get a letter from an editor that mentions two different book proposals or manuscripts and you don't want to run to the copy store to make a photocopy, and can't decide which of the two files to stick the letter into, this book is for you. If you have stacks of paper on your desk and on your floor and on your couch, or even on your bed, stacks which you someday intend to file, this book is for you. This book is a hands-on approach to managing the paper flow of anyone who does any kind of writing. In seconds you will be able to put your hands on that elusive clipping that told about the man who invented synthetic testicles for his male dog, because the dog looked embarrassed when he came home from being neutered. Trust me, you will be able to find it! If you're truly a messie, the only difficult part involved in using this book will be remembering where you placed this fabulously-helpful book. But, once you've found it again and followed its suggestions, you won't even have that problem anymore.

one of the best.
This is by far one of the best EQ books that I have read. The plot is fairly complex, not like that of Sherlock Holmes where you know who did it, but the story introduces a selection of characters that each have a motive for the threatining messages and the weird christmas gifts presented to one John, who is sure that someone is trying to murder him. towards the middle, a dead body is found and EQ is starting to worry. The ending I won't give away, but it is a twist no one expected. I would reccomened this book to anyone who is sick and tired of Agatha Christi and Sherlock Holmes.

whodunit?
A must-read for anyone who loves surprise endings. At first, the book seems to be giving away too much information and that the clues would lead me to the right solution. Alas, the Master has again hood-winked this reader. The characters may not be as fully-realized as in Calamity Town, but the multiple red-herrings that the Maestro pulls out of the hat and the Dennis Miller-like ambiguous references he gives out at a fast clip more than makes up for it.

A great book
An absolutely wonderful and useful guide. Would highly recommend to anyone looking into philanthropy. How anyone can not have this is beyond me.

A good reference
This is an invaluable reference work for anyone looking for information on the philanthropic world. However, there is 1 glaring omission: My brother, David G. Jacobs, is the Editor of this book, and is credited as such on the inside front cover. I don't know who this Jeffrey Falkenstein is, or why he is listed as "compiler". I felt I had to set the record straight on this item.

Why "The Street" Succeeds
Sesame Street, one of television's most significant shows, continues to educate children after 30-plus years on air. The success of the program is due, in large part, to a focus on research and curriculum development. The curriculum has evolved over the history of the show from being primarily cognitive to including many affective elements. This book shows the development of Sesame Street's curriculum and the development of other media. It is a must read book for those interested in childhood development, children's television, and fans of the show. After reading this book, one appreciates the fact that the success of the show is no accident.

An impressive synthesis of key research studies
"G" Is For Growing: Thirty Years Of Research On Children And Sesame Street is an impressive synthesis of key research studies done on one of the most influential, pervasive, and enduring children's televisions programs since its inception in 1969. The contributors examine, analyses and comment upon the processes by which educational content and research are integrated into production for a show which began for the purpose of preparing preschool children for school and went on to become a world-wide cultural icon. Very highly recommended reading for students of the television and its cultural influences, "G" Is For Growing also explores methodological issues in conducting media-based research with young children; the longitudinal impact of preschooler viewing of educational versus non-educational television; and cross-cultural differences in the treatment of educational content.

Fun even for pre-readers
I bought this for a long plane trip for my 2.5 yr old son who loves other Arthur books. He had fun with the stickers, even though he is too young to grasp the concept of placing the stickers on the respective words, he enjoyed the story, and I enjoyed having a lightweight book that kept him entertained for quite a while.

Fun for little ones!
My 2 year old LOVES Arthur-she's too little to read, but we located the "blue" words and then found the related sticker to match them. She loves the story and when she's older, she can read the words. This book also have a whole page of stickers to use to create your own story. She loved this! Great book!

THE book for model UN delegates
This is the best source I have ever seen for model United Nations research and is a must have for model UN prep.

A MUST for MUN!
If you're a MUN delegate, I strongly reccommend you buy this book. It describes the current issues and problems which face the world and United Nations today. The issues in A GLOBAL AGENDA are often committee topics for conferences. This book provides a solid background information to what you need to research and what the specifics are of the topic. It could also help to decide what committee you want to do! It's a must to pack in your briefcase to every conference.

In The Days of Old, In the Days of Gold, In the Days of '49
This book traces the history of the California Gold Rush from 1848 to 1859. It is an exciting tale of fortunes won and lost, of thousands of men and women catching "Gold Fever" --the promise of easy riches. Some of it is quite humorous "...Get our California Gold Grease! Only 10$ a box. Rub on your body, roll down a hill. Gold, and only gold [in italics] will stick to your skin!"

The book also is realistic, telling of the dangers facing people who came over land or by sea around South America to the Isthmus of Panama. Both during the gold rush and after its height a gold-based service economy arose to meet the needs (at highy inflated prices) of the miners.

The book describes how gold was mined, and the properties of gold that make it valuable "A piece of gold the size of a pea can be stretched into a wire that is two miles long. ...Gold is eight times heavier than stones and sand. Gold is sturdy, yet soft." Surprisingly informative and always interesting, with Michael Eagle's portraits and exciting scenes illustrating the already exuberrant text. An excllent book for elementary school readers in grades 2 through 5 (or so), "Gold Fever" makes history fun!

U.S. History Teacher (teaching elementary students)
Gold Fever is an outstanding book! I ordered this book to use with American students ages 7-9 learning about the American West. We read the book aloud and discussed its content as we went. The content was perfect for this age group and the illustrations were wonderful. My students were enthralled and begged for more time (we read it over two days). They asked great questions and wanted to learn more. This book has great basic information about gold, the Gold Rush, and its impact on California/the West. Overall--good, solid content and thought-provoking illustrations.

I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Wonderful graphics
This is a wonderful paper doll book. Book gives a bit of history regarding the dresses in the book. Illustrations are excellent.

Beautiful fashions from the Belle Epoque
This is one of the most beautiful sets of paper dolls I have, well drawn with great attention to detail and short historical notes on each dress inside the back cover. There are a lot of costumes in this book, about thirty, and two beautiful dolls. It covers fashion from 1890 to 1919, with dresses from great designers like Worth and Paquin. Tom Tierney's paper dolls are wonderful, and this is one of his best.
