If you collect paper dolls, or just like them, I suggest you snatch this one up. It's one of the newest additions to my collection, and is already one of my favorite of the Tierney paper doll families. The entire family comes in swimsuits: grandparents Walter and JoAnn; Walter's sons Patrick and Brad; JoAnn's children Scott and Shannon; Patrick's smiling wife Kathy; their absolutely darling children--Bridget has Shirley Temple curls, Deirdre has a fashionable bob-cut, and Brandon has his uncle's good looks. They have fashionable costumes for all occasions: shopping, winter outings, and, of course, Shannon's afternoon wedding! On the last plate is Shannon's beautiful wedding dress. Georgeous dress, in the 30's fashion. I won't spoil it though--you have to see it for yourself! A must-buy!

Amphoto Black and White Data Guide
One of the most helpful darkroom as well as general photographic guides that I have found. The best thing about it is that it informs you on all the major brands on the market i.e. Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, Ilford, etc. unlike guides published by the companies themselves who of course only advise you about their products. As a consumer you need to know about all of them. I have been waiting for an update for a few years now, which is what I hoped to find when I looked it up in Amazon. The guide is still helpful but there are many new products since 1993.

The best darkroom and photographer's handbook
This book is invaluable for the darkroom worker, both amateur and pro. It lists properties and develop times of all films, describes printing papers in depth and gives information on every kind of photo chemical you ever wanted to use but were afraid to buy. I only wish it were updated to include newer films and papers, but it's still the handiest book I own.

Excellent.
This, like all the Blackwell Anthologies, is probably the most complete anthology available -- and for an anthology, what else is important? Unlike the subject-specific anthologies, this volume focuses on surveying the volume of thought of a particular time period, and thus is divided into sections, providing a "mini-anthology" of the twentieth-century analytical debate on each topic, which include philosophy of mind, ethics, and of course, language. By the way, if you are, like me, annoyed by the particular brand of "linguistic philosophy" that the (quite legitimate) philosophy of language unleashed upon the world, you'll find this book frustrating. Nonetheless, every good philosophers knows that you haven't beaten the enemy until you understand his arguments -- and, looking past such stylistic pet peeves, there are mountains of amazing work to be found here.

Ideal for Anyone who Wants to Begin To Study Anal. Phil.
This is an extraordinary anthology, not only in the sense that it includes the basic writings on philosophy of language (like Frege's "On Sense and Reference" and "The Thought", and the important reading of Bertrand Russell "On Denoting") but also contains readings on metaphysics which include portions of Wittgenstein's Tractatus, and Quine's "On What There Is". Contains also the readings of Quine's "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" and the reply of other philosophers to that reading, specially "In Defense of Dogma" by H. P. Grice and P. E. Strawson. Contains readings on Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, and Ethics (which includes portions of G. E. Moore's Principia Ethica). It is the ideal anthology for anyone who wants to begin to study analytic philosophy.

I enthusiastically recomend it.

This book has saved us many times when we've been searching high and low for the information we need. Good technical ( but not boring ! ) descriptions of processes, materials, techniques. This is an essential book for all papermakers and paper artists.

An excellent overview of handpaperpmaking -A must-have
Excellent, information packed, a good reference as well as how-to book, belongs in every collection, lots of images of artists' work. I return to it for moldmaking for casting paper.

Textures
.
Dear Carlota:

Your At the Paper Gates ... It's a triumph, no other words for it. First, the translations are very good indeed. Second, the individual poems are often outstanding, and always striking (and in such different ways too!). For example in "Exiles:Unpublished Letter from Nora," you weave Nora Barnacle into Molly Bloom - fair enough, almost predictable perhaps - but you do it in a very subtle way, that "Spanish" at the end, not the Italian she would have known. Many writers would have made a hash of this idea through their haste to spring the "idea" on us, but you're more careful. Then there's the humour, mocking and ribald -in, say, "Each Love Affair in My Life ..." (Isadora Duncan) --which runs through the entire sequence. Then there's the sharpness of insight, which is almost (but not ironic or dessicated), as in "Letter from Lucrezia Borgia to her Confesor"- "My punishment now / is twentieth century freedom." There are lines, or narrative twists, which are hard to forget. Of course there's a structure to the book, intentional I'm sure, which begins to emerge on rereading - present in details such as the echoing of the tattooed bodies of the first poem in the conclusion of the final piece ('Textures ...'), with its "sketching on your body". Such details make the book more than merely a collection of lyrics based on a good idea (women in history speaking, along with / through me, the contemporary author). In this particular instance, you convey that desire we have (don't we?) to mark the body of the beloved, that animal instinct to set some kind of sign of possession on the cuerpo of the lover.

Finally -- and that last aspect is a facet of this one - there's the sheer eroticism - never coy or mawkish -- of the writing. I'm sure this is in the texture / texturas of the original Spanish, and is bound to have evaporated somewhat in the translation, although I think I can detect it in places. It's very different from an Anglo-Saxon / North European variety and all the more impressive for that. I just love the way these poems hang between the unabashedly fleshy and hyperspace, too. I could go on; suffice it to say I'm very grateful to have it and that I've been carrying it around in my pocket for over a week, and probably will do for a good while longer.

Did I say that's it's beautifully-produced too? InteliBooks is to be congratulated. The appearance of the book is superb, matching its sumptuous and quizzical contents.

Carlota Caulfield's Poetry
"Carlota Caulfield gives us an extraordinary and hallucinatory book, original and disturbing, which helps us to recreate our madness and love as extraordinary women of a universal history, from countesses to dancers, from Incan princesses to nuns, because this poet knows that the true secret of love letters does not lie with the recipient, but with the writer. This is an exquisite and joyous collection, a classic work of 20th century poetry. Caulfield is a poet to read and remember: her love letters will forever be in the secret zones or in the open landscapes of the written word."

-Marjorie Agosin, author of Women of Smoke

"I read your incendiary women with immense pleasure, particularly enjoying the historical texturing of the material. My only regret was that I wanted more. I will read the collection one more time because I may want to respond with a poem of my own. You are inspiring me!"

-Cecile Pineda, author of Face

"In At the Paper Gates with Burning Desire, Carlota Caulfield arranges a teasing collage of fragments of women's writing throughout history and from all over the world. Her sources are various, ranging from Sappho to Isadora Duncan, from a Virgin of the Sun to Rosa Luxemburg; letters are repositioned, faxes and e-mails recontextualized. But a common theme winds its sinuous way through these shards of emotion ripped from the past: the secret, playful language of love.

-Stephen Hart, author of White Ink: Essays on Modern Feminine Fiction in Spain and Latin America

"In Caulfield's poetry, writing herself becomes rewriting the other(s). There are two poetic voices in this book: an intimate female voice, strongly confessional, and an intellectual, cosmopolitan voice, full of multicultural references and endless metamorphoses, both of which transform our reading into a feast for the senses as well as for the mind."

-Jesús J. Barquet, author of Escrituras poéticas de una nación: Dulce María Loynaz, Juana Rosa Pita y Carlota Caulfield.

One of the greatest art books ever written.
Armin Zweite's chronology of the life and work of Barnett Newman is absolutely fantastic. Written in a compact style hitherto unknown by art commentators the book flows from one anecdote to another. Complete and well referenced, the book is as complete as one would wish without ever being overbearing. Given the limited scope of Newman's work I would have hope that all prints were in color but alas only about 50% are color. Still the works are presented logically and connections are made throughout the book. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended for anyone. HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended for the abstract art enthusiast.

solace in poetry
In a strange blessing of timing, I received Merrin's latest while struggling to let my 18yr-old daughter leave home. I was sceptical; what could this poet possibly say that I wasn't living through?
Then, from "Long Distance", "Lately, my daughter and I speak/by way of cats ... stiff-legged, she steps away." How artfully, I thought, she's rendered the messy, emotional business of letting your daughter go. In a fit of jealousy, I put the book away.
After Sept. 11, all my novels, music, videos seemed meaningless. I sought solace in poetry. From the generous inclusiveness of "Family Reunion", to the lament of her closing verses ("...the always available/possibility of changing your mind.") Merrin has reminded me that we are family - as long as we love - it ain't easy - but nothing matters more.
Poetry matters. words truly can heal, soothe, sometimes enlighten. And remember hope? That's what I feel after re-reading Bat Ode today.

another keeper
i'm familiar with the poet's work from pre-_Shift_ and enjoyed _Shift_ muchly. so, with abandon i glommed _Bat Ode_ from amazon, even splurging on the hardcover edition. another keeper. in vain have i tried to post a short review of this work while i thought of something more, uh, more. it doesn't seem to take, "Merrin renders the quotidian exquisite". then while google-poking on her name about i found this phrase re Elizabeth Bishop, "transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary". looks like i'm in synch w/someone out there. for a glimpse at the possibilities see http://www.poets.org/poems/poems.cfm?prmID=2170 - recommended.

Telling time with the Bears
"The Berenstain Bears Catch the Bus" is another winner in the excellent series of children's books coauthored by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The series is about the Bear family: mom, dad, and the two cubs. In this volume, the two cubs oversleep -- will they miss the school bus?

The book contains enjoyable cartoony illustrations that are bright with soft, pastel colors. I especially love the Bear's whimsical house: a hollow tree with Victorian accents and lavender trim. The story is told in an appealing rhyme with simple vocabulary -- great for beginning readers. Example: "It is almost seven, as you can see. / All is quiet in the Bears' Home Sweet Tree."

An nice educational touch to this book is the fact that the Bears' story is accompanied by both traditional clockfaces and digital time displays throughout, thus helping young readers learn how to tell time in both formats. I bought the book for my five year old nephew, and he loved it. Highly recommended.

No more "I want to sleep".
This is a really useful book to get my four-year old out of bed every morning. A nice feature is that every page shows a dial and a digital clock, making it easy for the child to learn to tell time. The book also teaches my son that he might be late for school if he does not wake up on time. So now every morning I will read the book to him, and he will wake up smiling instead of whining "I want to sleep"!

Great introduction for adults and children
This is a great introduction to paper airplanes for the novice. The models range in complexity from easy to difficult, providing a challenge for both kids and adults. Best of all is a brief comparison of each model with specific models of actual airplanes, and a brief primer on flight principles. Taken together, this book is a great lesson in aviation, as well as a lot of fun.

Best Ever Paper Airplanes
This is an awesome book. It challenges your skill of making, cutting, and folding paper airplanes.
