Rousing Collection of 1960's Social Literature!
For those of us who were actively involved in the events of the 1960s, this collection of relevant works is a virtual treasure trove, containing everything one would need in order to gain a better informed and more balanced perspective as to what was said and thought about a range of important social issues so hotly debated in those fabled times of Vietnam, civil unrest, and social experimentation.

Since so much of the documentation from that time is now sadly out of print, this collection serves as an active antidote to what has become a predominating character asssassination foisted by the new right to the effect that the sixties was all about sex, drugs and rock and roll, which tends to trivialize what actually was said, done, thought, and debated during those turbulent years. If one approaches those times in the proper historical framework, objectively searching for the evidence as to what it was that happened then and how it changed everything, then a book like this can serve a yeoman's purpose by presenting much of the original material for a person's reading pleasure and ultimate edificiation.

To my mind, the sixties represented a time when the younger generation simply refused to accept the world as presented, to uncritically accept the tired old platitudes, hypocrisies, and self-serving myths of the main-stream older generation. Seen in such a light, a lot of the social quesioning, cultural experimentation, and terrifying 'sturm und drang' elements of the times can be better understood.

In the trenches of all the major events, from civil unrest to Vietnam to the counterculture, were people who were actively questionaing conventional wisdom and the tried and true ways of the established society. Many of the selections from this book can help a curious reader to better grasp what the issues were and what the debate on the issues centered around. This is a supremely useful tool in helping to whittle away at the myths being perpetrated by the conservative revisionists about the events of the 1960s. Enjoy, amigo, and keep on trucking!

Outstanding primary source material
Much of the liturature of this period is difficult from the historian's point of view because there are either nostalgic and apologetic (e.g. Gitlin and Miller) accounts by former particiants or their are bitter diatribes against the 1960s (e.g. Horowitz and Lasch). Of the two groups mentioned, the former is more accurate and critical than the later, but nothing -- nothing at all -- comes close to the primary source documents and selections in "The Sixties Papers". Of the six of seven anthologies out there, this is by far the best.

I would like to have a summary on the book's events of riots
I need to review the book Rebellion In Newark because I am Doing a book report on it.

Eye-opening and compelling
This book should be required reading in all large companies. I liked the author's style of writing -- felt like he was talking to me in plain english, not typical lawyer-talk. I am Sales Manager in a large marketing firm and most of the things that the author writes about were already happening in our firm. Now we will be able to take immediate steps to correct them. I don't understand why our outside counsel never admonished us about these things. Mr. Tapper's advice is so much more valuable than the cost of this informative guide to the world of litigation. He really does show you how what you don't know CAN hurt you and your company. Get this book, and keep it handy for continual refreshers.

How to stay out of trouble
It's a wake up call on how to deal with your colleagues and the public. Loaded with useful information that s/b required reading for any mgr to avoid major problems in today's corp. environment. It is well written by someone who obviously has seen executives put their foot in their mouth.
I passed on my copy to my CEO and HR Head and told them to read this book asap. It was my recommendation that we weave the contents of this book into our mgmt training program.
I am a SR VP with a financial services firm and and had it instantly change my methods on dealing with people.

A "must-read" for all your staff
I just finished reading this highly informative book, and recommend it without reservation. What I liked about it was its no-nonsense approach to showing you how easy it is to say and do the wrong things in your everyday work routines. It's written in plain-speak, laymen's terms. The author is an expert in advising you how to avoid the trouble spots that can make your words backfire. We all use emails and never think twice about their effect, but this book will change all that if you heed the author's advice about the traps in email use that can cause you and your company a lot of trouble, particularly when your company gets sued and your emails are resurrected during the discovery and document production phases of litigation.
What's nice is the realization that you're getting advice from a former in-house counsel who has seen the effects of managerial blunders, so the perspective is from the inside. You're not only alerted to email trouble spots, but to all kinds of concerns involving voicemails, how you handle confidential information, including laptop negligence, access to computer records, the way you write up reports, and an alarming wake-up about how we don't think twice about giving outsiders carte blanche to walk through our offices at night, touch our loose papers, and maybe even copy them--these are the janitorial service crews who clean our offices at night and empty the wastebaskets that may contain very confidential information as throw-aways. The chapter discussing this is worth the price of the book.
It's also a great read to learn about what your company should have in its Email and Internet Use policies, and how you can adopt a legally recognized program for "document retention," which allows you to clean out the accumulation of old, unneeded files and records. There's also a review of the McDonald coffee burn case and the Firestone tire defect debacle to show you the contrast of how to handle a media public relations crisis the right way, and how to keep trial lawyers from achieving punitive damage awards against your company.
I'm in an electronics firm with a staff of 10 supervisors and managers, and I'm buying a copy for each of them. It just makes sense for them to know how their words can have far greater consequences than what they think at the time they write them.

The art of life unfolded
The art of Japanese paper folding is called Origami. It is an ancient art, a discipline that has entertained and amazed both children and adults alike.

I learned to fold the Origami paper crane when I was a teenager. It is something I have remembered all my life, and I have always enjoyed showing someone how to make one, or taken delight in seeing the happiness in a child's eyes as the piece of paper turned into a graceful bird.

Spread Your Wings and Fly is a positive affirmation book that you read as you learn to fold your paper crane. The beginning of the book discusses how the author learned to fold the crane and there is even a little history of the art of origami. She also discusses how to use the book and achieving the end result, a flapping version of the paper crane.

But it was getting into the story, into the folding of the crane that really grabbed me. The crane can be a difficult feat if not shown by someone who can patiently teach the art. Ms. Saunders has the pictures of folding the crane broken down into the easiest and most basic way of folding. I followed through, page by page, fold by fold, and while it is a little different than the way I was taught, I had no problem following and achieving a proper and working crane.

Then I went back and read the story. Each fold has a purpose in making the final product. Each time you fold, you are presented with a fold that life can offer you. Sometimes the fold can resemble the shape the paper has taken, sometimes there is a ripple in the fold. While a fold can remind you of a mountain, the mountain can be a big dream or it can be a small one. As you flatten the mountain out, you are reminded that dreams can be squashed also. Wonderful visuals to accompany the process of making the crane, to discovering the folds in your own life, and finally flying free with the finished crane, no matter how life folds for you.

This is beautifully written, well explained, and to top it all off, there are the excellent illustrations, quality print on glossy paper, all of which only compliments the entire work. Together, Ms. Saunders and Ms. Mihelich have given us a book that will provide parents and children with some quality time and some insightful mini-meditations for both of them. Or, if used by a child alone, it is time this child will spend exploring him/her self.

folding, flapping, and flying
Spread Your Wings and Fly is a wise and enchanting book, using the ancient art of origami to teach us about ourselves. By following the simple instructions for folding a flapping bird, children are gratified and delighted to learn that they have the ability to create such a wonderful creature and are wonderful themselves.

Mary Saunders uses the process of folding a flapping bird as a metaphor for the unfolding of life's journey and as a symbol of the unlimited possibilities in each of us. She continues the metaphor poetically in the directions for creating the flapping bird. "Think of two of your good points and bring them together" is the eloquent instruction to fold the paper in half.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Carla Mihelich. The diagrams clearly explain each step of the folding process. In the vibrant illustrations the bird emerges into magical, mythical landscapes and creatures guide and accompany it on its journey of becoming. As the author writes in the preface: "May you and the children in your world experience enduring moments of possibility as you fold the flapping bird and set it flying..."

Fold and Tell--origami for life
Spread Your Wings and Fly integrates beautifully the story of life unfolding as well as the construction of the flapping bird. Ms. Saunder's inspiring words and the beautiful illustrations by Ms. Mihelich encourage even young listeners to keep turning the pages. The origami diagrams are easy enough to follow that my 10 year old found success immediately. Remembering the story helps keep the folding steps in order as well as giving encouragement for life through the building of this origami model. Even if you only purchase it as a beautiful book you will find it draws you in,holds your thoughts, and compels you to try the folds. Build the bird, spread your own wings, and fly!

Awesome airplanes
I stumbled across this book in a local library a few years ago in the oragami section and was intrigued. I had tried making accurate flight-capable airplanes before, but with little success. The simple approach that Schmidt uses makes the building process enjoyable, and while the planes produced are reward in themselves, the fact that they actually fly enhances the experience. While the planes aren't super-realistic, they are a definate change of pace from simple folding and precision cutting and bending. While the intended age range encompasses mostly grade/middleschoolers, the young at heart will still find enjoyment by adding details to the planes and having realitsic (paper) jet fighter strikes against their coworkers. This book is definately for anoyne with a passion for flying and/or folding.

Complicated planes made easy
We have checked this book out of our local library four times and renewed it several more times than that. It has many different planes from simple and easy to fold, to the more complicated bi-plane and even a Boeing 747. They all look remarkably realistic and to-scale when done carefully. Scissors, ruler, and glue are necessary besides, of course, paper. We need our own copy for my airplane-loving son.

great
all of the planes in this book fly great if you like planes, paper planes ,oragami ,you gota get this book

The Best Dish on Bush
You don't have to be Texan to appreciate the latest and greatest edition of The Texas Almanac. The book is chock full of interesting information about the Texas Rangers (the law enforcement group, not Bush's former baseball team), as well as bits of trivia that make you wonder why George W. would ever want to leave the second largest state in the US.

The almanac also has plenty of helpful facts, such as the climate, weather disasters and population of each county in the Lone Star State.

This book is great for anybody, but is a must for every journalist and television news analyst who intends to interview the governor of Texas on his presidential bid.

Texas for the millenium
What a find! From environmental information to history to state government, the Texas Almanac has it all. The book lists helpful information for natives and visitors, from the National Wildlife Refuges to facts on Texas tourism and the info on hunting and fishing licenses. Also available are little factoids, such as the the brief period in history that the Texas Capital was actually a steamboat and the history of oil in the Lone Star State. A must for anyone who wants to know more about the state!

Texas Almanac -- Millennium Edition
Little Dallam County (pop 5891) has the highest per capita income in the state of Texas? San Antonio is the second largest city in Texas?, ahead of Dallas! These are the kind of facts you will readily find in the Millennium Edition of the 2000 - 2001 Texas Almanac. This edition features a concise history of the Texas Rangers, an improved layout of all 254 counties and the all important, "Texas Pronunciation Guide". If you are a glutton for minuet facts about Texas you will enjoy the Millennium Edition of the Texas Almanac.

Laugh Out Loud
"That's Me In The Middle"-Vol.2 of the hilarious Bandy papers will have you in stitches. Warning: Your wife probably will ban the reading of this one in bed- the chuckles and titters will drive your spouse nuts. The exploits of Bartholomew Bandy during WWI written by an author who understands human nature, military snafus and aviation. This series of books constitute the funniest fiction I've encountered in the english language. If you enjoy the short stories of Patrick McManus you'll love Donald Jack's novels!

A hilarious read!
In 1980, I was travelling in Europe and saw "That's Me in the Middle" in a used book store in Copenhagen. I was attracted to it for two reasons--1) It had WWI aircraft on the cover and I like books on that period, and 2) It was in English...I picked it up without a second look.

When I left town on the train, I happened to be in the First Class car. As I settled down and began reading about Bart Bandy, I kept having to go out into the hallway to laugh out loud, so as not to irritate the various German businessmen and French society ladies with whom I shared the compartment. It was the funniest book I had ever read! After laughing for a while, wiping my eyes, and taking a deep breath or two, I would go back into the compartment, sit down, and start reading, only to have to burst out into the hall again in a few minutes.

Since that time, I have managed to find and read all of the Bandy Papers. They are all just as funny, and are true to the hilarious character of Bartholomew Bandy. Donald Jack writes a good historical novel, and creates such a group of idiosynchratic characters that we immediately recognize. Then, he weaves them all into situations that are just plain funny! I would recommend any of the Bandy Papers and, as this was the first I had read, it holds a special place for me.

Enjoy!

It's so absurd, it probably happened !
The second volume of the funniest canadian soldier in WW1. A dubious rise to headquarters results in the expected bedlam, and Bandy is sent back to the trenches. If you've read the first volume, don't miss it !!

Thank you Robert Burgess
Worth every dime! What an excellent book! Easy to understand and an absolute pleasure to read and read again. It's beautifully put together. I so much appreciate the generosity of artists who share their knowledge (and 'how to's) with me. I have just begun to include toy theatre workshops in my repetoire of SKY HIGH workshops and this book is an incredible resourse. I will encourage all my students (and creative friends) to purchase Robert's book.

Well done!
Robert's book is visually stimulating in colour and design and easy to understand.... This book would make any paper arts enthusiast want to start making paper theatres.. It also includes a Card Theatre that can be mailed.... Well done! The only problem I had was finding Mr. Burgess' website, the address must have changed.....

what an unusual and super book
how refreshing to find such an exquisite book on this very interesting subject. I made all the theatres and they were a joy to construct following the easy to understand directions. Robert burgess' hand drawn illustrations are beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a slight interest, young and old

MULTICULTURAL TALES FOR EVERYONE
I have been using this great collection of stories in My San Francisco classroom for 5 years now. My classes are always composed of children from a wide variety of different cultures. It is so powerful to have one book that so many students can relate to. With stories from Japan, Africa, Guatemala, Russia and many others, children can usually find a story that represents their personal culture. These stories are excellent tools for opening the door to group discussions. These discussions present opportune times to discuss morals, cultural differences/similarities and human nature. It is obvious that Pleasant DeSpain is a master storyteller and writer because the stories are so easy to read aloud. I could not recommend these tales to tell more.

Thirty-Three Multicultural Tales to Tell
This is a supurb collection of multicultural tales! It's a delight to read and the stories have many classroom uses. DeSpain knows how to make each story come alive and he keeps them short and to the point. Boys especially like to read this collection. I recommend it to everyone.

Excellent for the classroom!
I am a music educator and am constantly looking for books that contain multicultural stories that I can incorporate into my music lessons. Many different countries are represented in this book and the illustrations are useful. They are black and white, and I have even allowed some of them to serve as coloring pages in my class. Each of the stories are relatively short so that they work into lessons extremely well.

Tilting at Mills is Priceless
Harris presents a non-fiction work that reads like a gripping novel. This is a great book that will educate its readers. Tilting at Mills documents a scientist's attempt to develop a recycling plant in the south Bronx. If Hollywood had the guts it would make a movie out of the this brilliant work. Three cheers for Tilting at Mills. This book will sell for years. Definately worth the price and more.

why good ideas dont go thru
a great idea is composed yet city politics provide a blockade. the author presents a very easy to read synopsis of the plan to build a paper mill in upper harlem yet local politics blaco the way

It's a drama
Tilting at Mills is the story of an heroic adventure in the two worlds of ecology and politics. The question of why very good ideas don't make it into practical, concrete existence is one that keeps coming up in life. (In case you hadn't noticed!) Lis Harris has produced an absorbing study of a project that almost made it. The characters in the drama are presented in vivid detail. So add to ecology and politics, psychology. And sociology. But the book reads like a novel. Harris really is a wonderful writer.
