A BILINGUAL DELIGHT !!
Tio Rico lives in a village in Oaxaca (wah-ha-kah), Mexico. He is a 77 year-old who became a pinata maker when rheumatism made it too difficult to continue his business of making sombreros.

A village boy collects newspapers and concrete sacks for Tio Rico. These he uses to fashion unusual and decorative pinatas. The process is explained by a delightful profusion of photographs which accompany the story. The author, George Ancona, also shows "puppets" which are child-size papier-mache forms worn by young folk dancers. He shows his own version of pinata formed over cardboard or balloons for those of us who cannot buy clay pots at a local market.

Children everywhere will enjoy this colorful book and be eager to try the craft. With luck, they will have patient teachers and learn some Spanish and/or English words, too! My favorite companion book is "Colors of Mexico" (isbn: #1575052164), illustrated by Janice Porter.

"THE PINATA MAKER" is a 5-star book for adults as well as children, and most appropriate for the 2003 church women's study of Mexico. Find a group of children to share this book with, and increase your enjoyment three-fold.

A Charming and Interesting Bilingual Book
The Piñata Maker describes how a Mexican gentleman, Don Ricardo, became a piñata maker. It elaborates on how he makes his beautiful piñatas, while including a description of his way of life. The book is fantastic for individuals who are studying either English or Spanish. I'm using it both to become more familiar with Spanish and to teach English to a Spanish speaking person. It is written on an appropriate level for adults to use in this manner, but it is also an excellent book for children.

Heart warming and educational book
Both my 5 & 3 year-old children LOVE this book. It is a nice combo of something fun (the pinatas, the design, & just the thought of candy...) and reality (photos of Don making pinatas). It is simple enough for them to understand, and captivating enough for even my younger child. We haven't delved much into the spanish text, but will eventually. For now, we're working on making the star for my daughter's sixth birthday party!

A Constant Reference
I have been a publisher for over 30 years and I can testify, Pocket Pal is one of the best selling books in the industry. Condensed and concise, it gets right to the point on type, prepress, printing, postpress, paper and so on. There is even a history of type and printing. Glossary.

This 4.25 x 7.25, 234-page goldmine will be a constant reference for typesetters, publishers and printers. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Pocket Pal
The Pocket Pal by The Internation Paper Company is the De-facto Standard guide to Graphic arts.

It features explanations (with visual examples) of everything from Typography to halftones.

When I was being trained for graphic arts, this was the book that was given to us along with the words "here is your bible".

The newest edition of the Pocket Pal adds to the already extensive explanations of the various facets of the graphics arts industry. With new technology constantly changing the graphic arts landscape, the Pocket Pal keeps pace with ease.

A "must buy" for the budding graphic artist in your family. Also of interest to those of you who like photography.

An Oldie But Goodie
I'm back to buy a dozen more. I've been using this book as a resource almost since I began in the graphics industry 22 years ago. It's been updated with information on the new technologies but retains the basics of prepress, printing, finishing and paper that are constant throughout time. A handy resource for experienced production people and a great tool for "instant learning" for people thrust into the printing/graphics arena.

LOVE THIS ROAD MAP
My husband and I think this is a great atlas for the United States and Canada. The neighboring states in the U.S. are green; and the state you are looking at is in white. This makes it very clear at a glance. Also, the Canadian portion of this Atlas is spectacular. The entire atlas is very easy to read. We really do like it and we are very glad we bought it.

Great new update
I love atlases and purchase each yearly edition of Rand McNally. Not much changes from year-to-year, but this edition represents a vast improvement on recent versions. First, they changed the color scheme. Neighboring states are now in olive green, instead of yellow as they were in recent editions. This change helps make it more obvious where borders are and the maps are clearer than before. In addition, national parks are now bright green, and stand out much better (in prior editions, they were outlined with pink and blended in with neighboring highways). Of course, each year, they update the road construction areas, which I have been impressed with their accuracy. This edition also includes a wonderful section highlighting some lesser known events and road trips around the country. Finally, there is a useful section that includes website addresses for state tourism offices. Even if you have a recent edition of this atlas, I highly recommend the 2002 version. Happy travelling!

Indespensible Road Trip Reference
This Atlas is the only way to go when you need a comprehensive map of roads in North America -- and who doesn't need one of those? I recently used the new edition on a long road trip, and every road was right where the book said it would be.

filling a gap in western studies of buddhism
This guy has done his homework. In a few languages! The book is less about buddhist "philosophy" as a whole, as much as about epistimology, the shared view of which any two buddhist debators would need as a starting point. The various trends that developed to "cope" with Dharmakirti's somewhat slippery model is what forms much of the book. The western idea of "universal" is the equivalent to the concept Dreyfus puts under the microscope for us. I found this book both challenging and rewarding, though it did take me quite a while to read~!

Recognizing reality- the evolution of Buddhist views
This books is an excellent treatise on Buddhist philosophy, in particular I found it provided a description of the differences in interpretation between different schools of thought as they evolved over time. It also points out many similiarities and differences between the Eastern and Western philosophical traditions. By focusing on a few critical philosophical topics, such as realism, it provides a more accessible detail view of later Buddhist philosophy than many other works. Clear and engaging writing.

Up from anti-realism
This is one of the best books available on those aspects of Indian and Tibetan philosophy that have the most in common with Western analytic philosophy. (Another is Matilal's book _Perception_.) I'm very sorry to see that it's out of print, and I hope that changes soon. It concerns the development of a certain tradition of Buddhism (originating with Dharmakirti) that began as a version of antirealism (opposed to the realism of the Nyaya school of Hinduism) but gradually found itself compelled by its own intellectual commitments to evolve into a version of realism. So it has a happy ending!

great
A journey of initiation embeded into a great story. I am anxious to see more works published by this author

Compelling.
I liked it! Interesting, deep, and very positive. I've read it twice already.

Fantastic!
This is a book we should all read! Compelling and attractive characters, solid plot, a taste of mystery and suspense, and profound content make this one of the best novels I have read in the last few years. But what really gives this book five stars is the amazing spiritual, mystical, and philosophical content we find throughout it's pages. It makes you look at yourself and your own life, our reality and our universe, in a new and liberating way. Yes it's a novel, but more than a novel it's an experience. It's a book you can read again and again and every time you do, it will allways have something new to say to you.

Another excellent Samantha story
This is another in the American Girls series about Samantha Parkington, a nine-year-old orphan girl living in the America of 1904. In this book, Samantha is pleased to learn that her good friend Nellie and her family have been hired by a lady who lives a mere two doors away. Even better, Nellie and her two younger sisters are to start attending the local school. But Nellie is behind in her learning, and is relegated to the second grade, where she is teased as being stupid. With a quick thought, Samantha realizes that she can help.

The final chapter of this book contains a highly informative chapter on education in 1904 America. Also, I must say that I did enjoy the wonderful illustrations provided by Nancy Niles and R. Grace.

This is another excellent American Girls book. As with the other Samantha stories, this one shows the seamier side of the "good old days," but presents the story in a lighthearted and uplifting way. My daughter and I both enjoyed the story, and the lessons that it taught. We both recommend this book to you.

A GREAT SAM ANTHA BOOK!!!
When I was younger, this was the first book in the American Girls Collection that I read. I decided to read it again at later time and still liked it. In the book, Samantha Parkington is a third grader at Miss Crampton's Academy. She meets up with her friend Nellie O'Malley, and learns that Nellie's employer, Mrs. Van Sicklen, is letting Nellie and her sisters, Bridget and Jenny, go to the public school. But on the first day, Nellie has problems in school. Because she couldn't go to shool while working in the factory, Nellie has never gone to shool before--she's nine years old and in the second grade. Samantha talks to her teacher at Miss Crampton's, and the teacher decides to help Samantha and Nellie out. Every day, after she finishes her chores, Nellie goes to Samantha's house for a tutoring session. Meanwhile, Samantha has to come up with a speech about Progress in America. Samantha prepares a speech on Factories in America--about how they have helped American society. After winning an award at Miss Crampton's, and being told to give her speech at the Mount Bedford Ladies Club, Samantha read her speech to Nellie. It's then that the book really starts to pick up--when Nellie explains that facotries AREN'T the improvement Samantha thought them to be. When the contest finally comes, Samantha changes her speech, and impresses both her friend and her grandmother. This book also takes a good look at the class system during that period in time, by showing the fact that Samantha would not be allowed near Nellie if she weren't helping her. An overall good book in the series, not to mention one of the first.

Candace

Interesting - Recommend for other girls to read it.
Samantha helps Nellie to improve her reading, math and science to help her move up to third grade. Samantha learns about Nellie's life before she moved next door. A great story to read

Casey Luv's Scary Stories
The Scary Storie Reader was great. Almost all of my classmates checked it out of the library. I was lucky because the library only has 1 copy and I managed to get a hold on it. After I started to read a few stories, I could see why everyone wanted it. It had terrifying stories! I gave this book 5 stars because it really deserves it for its thrilling horror stories and its well written chapters. I recommend you buy this book or at least check it out of the library if you haven't already. It was truly a good book.

For Today, For Tomorrow , Forever!
I first heard about Scuplture Vultres from a friend. She told me I would never look at a cereal box the same way again. She was right. When I got my own copy I went cover to cover, each chapter better than the last. I was hooked. I was impressed. I was empowered, and I was inspired! I wanted to go out and teach a class!

Like most people I have become more aware of found object art,and being a crafts person myself I admire the unique and unusual way artist can give new life to discarded everyday materials. This is differant. I am used to bits of wood, plastic and metal showing up in places never intended, but paper and cardboard?

This book makes a real differance. It takes things out of my blue box and really does re-use reduce and recycle. The ideas here nudge children's imaginations closer to the earth ethic demonstrated by the authors. Ma Nature moves a step or two forward and we all benefit.

From the classroom to the cottage, from backyard theatre to homemade art, this book will never go out of date, nor be out of place. It should be in every classroom and every family's home. I give it 5 stars and applaud the authors! I repeat, you will never look at a cereal box the same way again!

Paper Will Never Be The Same
The eye catching cover of this book gives one a quick inkling as to the fun contained inside. The back cover is invaluable with its pictures of the different projects. The author certainly gives a kick start to our imagination! The effects all ages can create out of simple recycled paper products and cereal boxes are amazing. We have tried a number of the projects and found the instructions very clear and easy to follow.

This would make a fun book for absolutely anyone to own especially for rainy days, cottage days, camping days, snow days or just plain fun days. Materials used are so simple, yet the results magnificent.

A must have for all.

Fabulous Scluptures
I really really liked this book. The different crafts are fun to do. I have made 4 masks. I took it into my class and we all made masks. Every one really liked doing them. The instructions are really good. They are easy and fun!!! Best of all you can make everything in the book with things from around your house. I'll never throw out a cereal box again. Every teacher should have this book - every kid should have this book!!!

A Very Good Book
I am a novice at papercrafts, but this book will help me become quite expert. It has many patterns, clear instructions, photographs, and drawing. The projects range from beginners to very complex.

Traditional papercrafts
This book is great but I goofed when I also ordered the book "The Art of Decorative Paper Pricking" by the same author. Traditional Papecrafts has all the same pages but 8 from the other book so I really waisted my money on the second book. Just stick with this book and forget the other titles from this author since they are included in this one book.

Great Buy.. Certainly no regrets.
Guess what. Before I discovered this book, I bought 2 other books by the same author: "The Art of Decorative Paper Pricking" and "The Art of Stencil Embossing". I was quite pleased with the 2 books I bought. That was the reason why I thought I'd try this book too. When I got it, I found that it contains the contents of the 2 books I have bought and 2 other more by the same author - Parchment Craft and Quilling....yes, all 4 in one! What a bargain! If you don't believe me, check the contents of the books out. Now, I can give the other two books to my sister and keep this one!

Papers that make a powerful biography
This long-awaited collection of letters, diaries, articles and speeches, most of them never before published, were selected with an eye to telling the story of a remarkable life--a life consumed with the quest for women's sexual liberation. The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger (Volume 1) gives us, with dramatic immediacy, the first 28 years of Margaret Sanger's quest.

FROM THE JACKET
The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger
Vol. 1: The Woman Rebel, 1900-1928
Edited by Esther Katz
Cathy Moran Hajo and Peter C. Engelman, Assistant Editors

The birth control crusader, feminist, and reformer Margaret Sanger was one of the most controversial and compelling figures in the twentieth century. This first volume of The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger documents the critical phases and influences of an American feminist icon and offers rare glimpses into her working-class childhood, burgeoning feminism, spiritual and scientific interests, sexual explorations, and diverse roles as wife, mother, nurse, journalist, radical socialist, and activist.

These letters and other writings, including diaries, journals, articles, and speeches, most of which have never before been published, have been selected and assembled with an eye to telling the story of a remarkable life, punctuated by arrests and imprisonments, exile, love affairs, and a momentous personal loss--a life consumed with the quest for women's sexual liberation. Because its narrative line is so absorbing, volume 1 may be read as a powerful biography.

Volume 1 covers a twenty-eight-year period from her nurse's training and early socialist involvement in pre- World War I bohemian Greenwich Village to her adoption of birth control (a term she helped coin in 1914) as a fundamental tenet of women's rights. It traces the intersection of her life and work with other reformers, activists and leaders of modernity on both sides of the Atlantic, including Havelock Ellis, H. G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Emma Goldman, Max Eastman, and Eugene Debs, as well as many leading radical artists and writers of the day. It highlights her legislative and organizational efforts, her support of the eugenics movement, and the alliances she secured with medical professionals in her crusade to make birth control legal, respectable, and accessible. This volume also includes letters from women desperately in need of fertility control who saw Sanger as their last hope. Supplemented by an introduction, brief essays providing narrative and chronological links, and substantial notes, the volume is an invaluable tool for understanding Sanger's actions and accomplishments.

The documents assembled here, more than 80 percent of them letters, were culled from the Margaret Sanger Papers Microfilm Edition, edited by Esther Katz, Cathy Moran Hajo, and Peter C. Engelman. Two subsequent volumes will address later periods in her life, and an additional volume will cover her international work in the birth control struggle.

"Mesmerizing letters from the days when birth control was legally obscene and jail sentences were regularly given out for talking about it in public. Nearly a century ago, Margaret Sanger was defending woman's 'ownership of her own body' and linking access to contraception to civil liberties and personal freedom. Rights we take for granted have a long and sometimes surprising history that comes clear on these pages. Required reading for our own time, whichever side of Roe v. Wade you are on."
-- Linda K. Kerber, author of No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship

"These wonderful letters, diary excerpts, and essays dramatize women's long struggle for respect, self-awareness, independence, influence, and control over our bodies and our lives. To contemplate Margaret Sanger's harsh reality and the enduring vision of this courageous pioneer--while the war against women escalates on every front--is a heartening and galvanizing act of rebellion. Esther Katz and her splendid team have given us all a very great gift."
-- Blanche Wiesen Cook, University Distinguished Professor, John Jay College and the Graduate Center, CUNY, and the author of Eleanor Roosevelt, volumes 1 and 2

"This engrossing volume, meticulously edited and selected, captures Margaret Sanger in all her complexity during a formative period in her long career. Open to practically any page, and something will grab your historical attention."
-- Susan Ware, editor of Notable American Women, volume 5

Soldier Nurse
As one always interested in the feminist movement, I rank "Margaret Sanger: Her Life in Her Words" as one of my favorite books. After reading this book, I truly understand who Margaret Sanger was, and why her work was so important to all women everywhere in the past and today more than ever. Sanger pioneered the availability of birth control for all women, giving women control over their lives, which is so counter to today's trends to eliminate birth control and abortion. Reed has written with great knowledge and perception of her subject and of the field of women's rights. Reed's writing draws the reading into a book that is difficult to put down. Highly recommended.
