Paper

This book, commonly known as WARP, is one of dozens designed to help students through the wilderness of paper writing. Unlike the others, however, it has become something of a standard in high schools, colleges, and even elementary schools, thanks to its clear, concise, up-to-date writing, and the excellent examples it provides. The book is short enough (and cheap enough) to be used as required reading for entire classes, and is remarkably useful for a surprisingly wide range of reader/writers. It was distributed as a textbook (and set of marching orders!) to my son's sixth grade class, but its no-nonsense approach would work just as well for college students. Very impressive accomplishment, and highly recommended.

Having problems with internet citations in your papers? Ceely et.al. have solved the problem in the clearest and most logical way. I highly recommend this book for teachers of writing across the curriculum. Writing a Research Paper is even better in its fifth edition than it was in its fourth since it contains more student work, and it wonderfully prepares students to use technology in their research.

I've used this text with my international college students with great success, and I gave my high school daughter her own copy, which all her friends beg to borrow. The model essays are superb, and the up-to-the-date section on internet searching and citation should be used by all teachers and students in the year 2000!

If only I'd read this book before joining a law journal, perhaps my Note would have turned out as something I would actually want to publish, instead of the rambling mess I actually ended up writing.

Volokh breaks down the process of writing an academic legal paper and offers sound advice for every step of the way. He applies an analytical approach to testing a proposal, adapted from his software background, and advice for choosing a solid proposal based on patent law's tenets (novel, nonobvious, etc.). His chapters on correct use of evidence are a refreshing BS antidote, especially considering some of the excuses for "support" of arguments that I've seen in a frightening number of submitted articles. Volokh expands the relevance of his book by also including chapters on seminar papers and on reviewing others' legal writing.

I liked it so much that our law journal purchased a few copies of this book for the coming academic year: we're making self-study lesson plans based on it to help 2L members with their note-writing process, and I'll ask all board members to refer to it when evaluating the final products at the end of the year. When I showed it to the other journal editors at my school, they all bought a few copies too. Volokh has even provided some helpful teaching aids on the book's web site, including Powerpoint slides and exercises.

I highly recommend Professor Volokh's new book, Academic Legal Writing: Law Review Articles, Student Notes, and Seminar Papers.

As the title suggests, it focuses primarily on legal writing, especially for aspiring and current law school students. However, anyone who wants to improve his/her writing and critical thinking skills should read this book. The book--which is only 189 pages--abounds in smart advice on how to write better and avoid common errors such as wordiness, unduly harsh criticism, overly technical language, etc.

Speaking as someone who starts law school in a month and a half, I am glad I read this book. It gave me a nice view about what type of writing is expected in law school. And unlike some academic books, it is affordable and highly readable.

Volokh addresses every possible question that a pre-law student could have about academic legal writing--how to choose a topic, how to test its claim or hypothesis, how to research it, how to use evidence (i.e., cases, law review articles, statistics, surveys, etc) correctly, and how even to publish and market your work.

To take one example: Volokh advises that in the process of conducting research always check the original source. In other words, do not simply assume that a secondary source will correctly represent the original article or case. For example, even the most revered Courts (such as the Supreme Court of the United States) sometimes misstate facts, arguments, and holdings in cases.

I can personally attest to the soundness of this advice. I once cited an article by a political science professor of mine in a paper I wrote for him. I relied on a secondary source to summarize his main thesis. When my professor graded the paper, he circled in red ink the citation of his work and wrote, This is not the argument I made. Did you bother to read the article?

Again, this is a great book for anyone considering law school. It should be on every pre-law student's must-read list.

Eugene Volokh is a genius--well, maybe not a genius--almost nobody is a genius--but he's pretty darn smart.

This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a nine-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1864. In this story, Addy and her mother arrive in Philadelphia and freedom. Unfortunately, Addy begins to learn that freedom in the North is not what she expected it to be. Racism pervades this new world, and even the African-American girls of her own school are not all friendly. Along the way, though, Addy learns about friendship and perseverance.

The final chapter is a look at education for African-American children in the America of 1864. This book is another great Addy book, teaching some great lessons, against the backdrop of real hardships. My eleven-year-old daughter loved this book, and so do I.

I Liked this book because a girl in my class did the same thing to me as Harriet did to Addy. Addy learned not to trust her fake friends but her real ones. I really liked this book and I can't wait to read Book 3 Addy's Surprise.

This is a wonderful story that brings a part of the past back to life. It is told from a view point that is not often heard from, a young black girl who was a slave and has escaped, but doesn't know how to read or write. It also tells a story of the hardship of a black family during this time and the story of friendship that applies to all races. I think the character Addy is one girls will enjoy reading about, I don't think boys will like it very much. The story is told in a way that children can easily read and understand. At the end of the book is a short description with actual pictures of life at that time for a young black girl and what school was like back then for black children.

Aliens for Breakfast is about a kid named Richard. He has to save the day because a little alien comes to him and tells him that Dorf is going to take over the world. This book had some of my favorite things like aliens, magic, and adventure. I think kids will like to read this book on their own time.

I recommend this Book to people who like science fiction.My favorite characters are Henry,Gorf,Aric,and Richard.I think it was great! because it is very funny and serious at the same time.

Aliens For Breakfast is a wonderful exploration into fantasy with a touch of the realistic. Used in the classroom, it provides an excellent vehicle to explore characterization and main idea. My students totally enjoy the adventure!

My favorite paper doll is Baby Bunny Sticker Paper Doll by Carole Munshi so my mom pasted Baby Bunny Betsy to a yellow board with all of the bunny cloths and framed it in a white frame to hang over my bed. Then she decorated my whole room to match my Baby Bunny Betsy paper doll.I just love it! Now I want to find more Baby Bunny paper dolls by Carole Munshi for my doll house.

My birthday party was lots of fun.12 friends came.I am 8 years old now.After eatinng cake and opening presents,my Mom gave all of us Baby Bunny Sticker Paperdolls. Baby Betsy Bunny is funny. We all laughed. My Mom gave each of us empty oat meal boxes and we made little houses for our bunnys. Now we have a Betsy Baby Bunny town and are going to have a Betsy Baby Bunny club.We all like Betsy Bunny very much.

I have been playing with paper dolls for over 28 years. This is, without a doubt, the best paper bunny that I have ever seen. It has changed my life. I play with my bunny every day, 365 days a year. I can't get enough. Sometimes, I just sit around on the couch and talk with my bunny for hours. I love him, her, whatever it is! It's great! I highly recommend this bunny!

" Benjamin Franklin," written by Peter and Connie Roop. Ben Franklin`s life began by being a poor soap maker`s son in Boston. By the time he was 17, he had already run off to Philadelphia to be a printer`s apprentice. During his life he had helped discover and create many different things like bifocals, the Franklin stove, lightning rods, electrical circuits, and the United States Constitution.
In this biograpy, Peter and Connie Roop have shown the readers not their opinions, but Franklin`s instead. This book uses mostly primary sources like Ben Franklin`s autobiography and letters. I liked this book because it was not just a story, but partly a mystery and because it was half story, half fact by fact.
I recommend this book to 8-9 year old readers who enjoy reading about U.S. history. So what is a scientist, an inventor, a printer, a postmaster, a diplomat and a founding father? Benjamin Franklin, of course!

The "In Their Own Words" series tells the story of famous Americans using various primary documents. For the life of Benjamin Franklin, authors Peter and Connie Roop use not only Franklin's autobiography, but his letters, pamphlets, scientific papers, essays, and, of course, his epigrammatic sayings from "Poor Richard's Almanac." However, Franklin's words are not used as much as you would think. So while this is a solid juvenile biography of Franklin, it really does not use his own words much more than an "ordinary" biography. This book has various illustrations, including paintings representing Franklin's life, photographs of a printing press and some of his inventions from his life, and reproductions of some of the things he printed. A photograph of his grave in Philadelphia is accompanied by a reproduction of his handwritten instructions for his epitaph. In the final analysis, despite the irony of the book not living up to its own title, "In Their Own Words: Benjamin Franklin" will give young readers a solid introduction to the life of the greatest American president never to be president.

This book is a very good book because we can follow the good characters Benjamin Franklin did in his life.

This collection of stories was wonderful. Every story was different and the book features a wide range of stories and emotions. I felt transported to a different time and place.

This is a great collection of stories ranging from family tales to folktales.Among my favorite were:John Henry Faulk's "Mrs. Fanny Rollins and her fake rubber bosoms," an old celtic legend of Finn McCoul is quiet but very powerful, Jay Stailey's stories jumped off the page with humor as did Finley Stewart's four offerings.Sometimes sad, often wildly funny the book gives us a glimpse of who we all are as human beings. My husband and I keep it by the bed for a quick reread f a story every now and then.Where can I find more like this?

I found this a WONDERFUL book! The stories are new and great. Perfect for adults and children, these are great stories to read to your kids before they go to sleep. But after they do, you'll keep reading for you!

"Betrayal" is the perfect book for readers interested in espionage but rusty on their Cold War history. It's also a welcome change to fans of Current Events and True Crime books tired of the mediocre research and rampant overwriting endemic to each genre. The authors wisely stick to the case at hand and introduce background only as it pertains to Aldrich Ames. In this way they avoid the odious True Crime approach of devoting multiple chapters to the family tree and childhood of their subject. Better still, the writers do not take undue authority by stating what motivated Ames; rather, they present aspects of the spy's life, such as alcoholism and a faltering marriage, as evidence of what made him tick. Not only do the authors practice good journalism, they respect their readers enough to avoid padding out the book with meandering anecdotes in lieu of characterization. Instead of slogging through forty pages about Ames's high school grades, the reader gets four or five pages of concise and useful detail on U.S.-Soviet relations of importance to this case. It's a shame this book is out of print. It's lean style, respect for relevancy, and use of on-the-record sources make it the most credible study of Aldrich Ames and an enjoyable read years after its release. On a final note, this book should be available second-hand in a normal size format and for less than five dollars. Look around. If you actually found this review it will be worth your time.

This is a very readable book on Espionage and especially demonstrates the weaknesses in our Counter-Intelligence system.

The CIA takes the heat in this book but this story demonstrates an inherint weakness in our security within ALL agencies involved in dealing with sensitive issues.

I felt this book was well written and recommend it to anyone who wants to try and understand how this could have happened.

I've read every book on the Aldrich Ames case (including a new one that recently came out) and I must say that this book was the most difficult one to put down. The story reads like one you would expect from professional journalists -- well documented, precise, and interesting from beginning to end. If I had to recommend one book on this pathetic case of espionage, it would be a "no-brainer" -- get _Betrayal_!!

This book is a riot. It's especially funny to see Bill Gates in his underwear!

GATES '99 is good fun. The author really captures a lot of the inside quirks of Microsoft. Plus, Bill looks great in the outfits!

Hilarious! You'll see Bill in a whole new light after being able to dress him as Janet Reno. This would fit perfectly in the holiday stocking of your favorite Microsoft drone.

Unless you write music with a felt-tipped marker, I'd look for something else. The staves in this volume are large and extremely dark. The typical (pencilled) scribbles of composers will be difficult to read on this paper.

I love this book! Good price for how much staff paper you get. I have been able to write all kinds of drum solos down with this awesome book. I suggest that if you need to write music but don't have the money for some REALLY expensive and nice staff paper, get this book.
