The Romanovs are paper dolls!
This book was wonderful! It has in it:the tsar and tsaritsa, wedding clothes, coronation costumes, matching fur-trimmed outfits, the tsar and tsaritsa again (older),traditional Russian clothes,an opera gown, traveling clothes, their 5 children, court costumes for the latter, traveling clothes for the girls, and two strange-looking attendants. The best was the girls. I agree with a fellow reviewer of this book that Olga and Marie were blonds. All in all, this a great book. Buy it,by all means,BUY IT!!!!!!!!!

Review by a 13-Year old Romanov buff
This was a beautifully drawn and colored book and had excellent colors and selections! It was fun to cut out to!!I recommend this book to any one who likes the Romanovs or OTMA!!

Very Good Paper Dolls of the Romanovs
This was a very good paper doll book. I reccomend it.It includes the tsar and tsaritsa at two different ages, their children,Olga,Tatiana(I like her best),Marie, and Anastasia, and hemophilia-stricken Alexei,as well as two attendants. There is only one problem:Olga and Marie were blonds,NOT brunettes. However these are fun and my sister and I fight over Alexandra!Do not give these to little children. If you cut them out,I have found that the book cover makes a good house for them to live in!

Paper money of the United States : a complete illustrated guide with valuations

F&F good as always...
Clearly THE book for the beginner and intermediate collector. It gives an excellent overview of each type of note (Nationals, Silver Certs, etc.) as well brief descriptions of each note within each type. A great way to learn the history associated with the engravings on U.S. paper currency from the Civil War (1861) to the present.

And, of course, the Friedberg numbering scheme is the standard method of referencing notes among collectors and dealers alike.

It should be noted however, that the values given for the notes are very rough approximations (very conservative). This is especially true for the UNC grade(MS60-64). There are no values for GEM notes (MS65+).

If you're looking for a comprehensive note reference with ball park values, this book is for you.

A must have for the Currency Collector.
This is the standard reference work on United States Currency for the collector. While the prices given are pretty much obsolete in the volatile currency market, the Friedberg Numbering system is universally used by dealers and collectors alike. If you are considering participation in floor or online auctions, you cannot tell what you are bidding on without this book, as all notes will be listed by FR#. Well worth the investment!

Outstanding Guide & Catalog
This book is a must-have for the serious US currency collector, along with the Standard Catalog, 17th edition. Together they provide a great catalog and price guide for US Treasury issues. There are good sections on fractionals and Confederate currency, and decent treatment of colonials. No obsoletes or military payment certificates. The black and white photos are quite a bit larger than those in the Standard Catalog. The color pictures in the back are a nice touch, but the printing is not the world's greatest -- many of the reds come out as pinks, the greens look almost fluorescent, etc.

There aren't many anecdotes or interesting bits of trivia, but as a guide and catalog it is top notch.

Very Helpful Guide
This book has provided me with important information as a consumer of medical services, and has provided my mother peace of mind as someone who has been undergoing a number of medical tests. The book clearly defines various procedures, patient preparation, and often includes comments about tests that patients are seldom told but ought to know. This book has been so helpful. I am a layperson with no medical knowledge. But to be able to describe a test to my mother in advance of the procedure, to let her know when it is non-invasive versus invasive, to know what kinds of physical symptoms or complications may follow a test...this has been invaluable information. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has to undergo, or has someone close to them who will undergo, medical tests. The price is [reasonable] given how much useful and potentially lifesaving information it contains.

haemophilia
I have a son that suffers from haemophilia and would like to know more about it please

I use this book everyday.
I work as a Triage Nurse in a very busy Family Practice Clinic. We all use this book every day to answer patient questions--it is concise and can easily be explained to all levels of medical sophistication. In fact today I am ordering a second one.

Excellent book on copywriting
I am picky about the marketing books I read and use and this one rates at the top of the list--up there with Bly, Caples, and Ogilvy.

Jammed-packed with insightful recommendations, this book contains tips, secrets and good, solid information from a writer who has the experience and expertise to back it up.

If you are looking to increase your business or are a copywriter who is looking for another useful tome for their marketing bookshelf, here is a gem of a book just waiting to be explored and put to work for you and your clients.

IMPROVES YOUR WRITING AND BOOSTS BUSINESS
Do you want to improve your business writing right away? Read Persuading on Paper. Marcia Yudkin gives away all the essential secrets of good promotional writing and reveals them in an upbeat, logical, easy-to-follow fashion. Using her creative checklists, five levels of "sell" and editing guidelines (with clear examples), I immediately found specific ways to make my own writing more exciting, direct and effective.

I gave the book to a friend who felt trapped in her inability to put ideas into words and saw Yudkin's tips tune-up her talent as well.

Yudkin's practical sections on production and marketing are a valuable bonus. She is a good storyteller who explains each point and then shows what she means. Her vivid examples make her advice easy to follow. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Marketing Made Fun!
This is a lively book on the usually dry subject of marketing. I would never have believed it could be so much fun to create all the marketing materials for my company. With this book, a painful process has become more like play.

If you need to write copy, you need this book! I am designing a marketing plan for my company from the ground up using this indispensable handbook. Small business owners, independent contractors and corporations could all benefit from Marcia's sage advice and user friendly style.

She covers every aspect of writing copy, including how to write in your own voice and style and remain consistent. The book has numerous examples of both good and bad copy and teaches you how to avoid common mistakes. From newsletters to brochures to ads and slogans, this book reminds you that writing good copy is most of the battle.

I stumbled upon Marcia and this book accidentally on the web. From that day on I realized that marketing no longer had to be completely boring. I'm now a huge fan of Marcia's and of her Creative Marketing Solutions website!

Old Ways to Fold New Paper

Fine sensitivity to detail
Leza Lowitz writes poetry that is never self-conscious, always full of grace and simplicity, with just the right dosage of details. And the details are evocative, their landscapes of Japan, of childhood, of womanhood. I look forward to her future work, and further travel with this gifted poet.

ACUPUNCTURE OF THE HEART
With fine, deft strokes, renowned poet-translator Leza Lowitz skewers her topics, either stimulating or anaesthetizing. Ranging the world of her own travels and psyche, she has the gift of a good poet to irritate when she pricks our sacred cows, to alarm when she rings the warning bell, and to arouse our humane sympathy when she draws near to our common causes.

Stunning Language and Brutal Honesty
...typify this poet's work. Without sentimentality, she travels to a very personal place and makes it universal; makes it matter. Whether it be a poem about a lover, politics, an ancient place and its resonances, or the evocation of a memory, Lowitz brings her gift to bear without pretense or self-consciousness. This is a poet to watch and to listen to. Her poems haunt and elucidate, they teach and inspire. Old Ways to Fold New Paper is a revelation. I return to it time and again.

The Paper Grail

Wonderful contemporary-fantasy quest
This is the 2nd best Blaylock I've read (best: The Last Coin) and has all the classic Blaylock plot elements: an assortment of quirky characters in a northern California backwater, and a mystic treasure with its aging guardians pitted against the bizarre machinations of a grotesque, eccentric villian. Nothing like fast-paced action but a marvellous unfolding of plots and characters.

A Wonderfully Offbeat Grail Quest
The quiet curator of a small museum in California has no idea what he's getting into when he begins a trip to claim a rare Japanese sketch for his museum. He finds himself in the middle of a life-and-death struggle for the Paper Grail, an origami cup with mystical powers over land and water. Blaylock slips adeptly from the everyday to the sublime, pitting unlikely heroes -- failed small businessmen and eccentrics -- against some pretty likely villains of our time: greedy real estate tycoons and cynics who would use the Grail's powers for their own aggrandizement rather than the good of the land. You're more likely to enjoy this beautifully written, highly literate book if you have read a good deal of Arthurian literature and if you're familiar with the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the late Victorian period. Fans of Tim Powers' _Last Call_ should definitely read _Paper Grail_: to judge by the dedications, the two authors were probably trading ideas the whole time they were writing.

Makes you want to move to California
I've known people who have lived in California and they never said it was anything like this. Perhaps if it was more like Blaylock's books and less like reality (that being earthquakes and mudslides and the constant feeling that the entire state is going to fall into the ocean . . . but darn isn't the weather nice?) I'd want to actually move there. In any event, in the hands of Blaylock the state and the entire coast becomes a magical place full of mystery and mundanity at the same time. Oddball characters strive for a powerful piece of paper while at the same time trying to pay their rent and get a date. All the people in this book are wonderfully strange (if they're the good guys) or bizarrely strange (if they're evil) but it gives the book a certain angle that very few of today have, the constant contrast between what's normal and what's magical and the thin line that separates them is great. It's fantasy that can exist without elves and trolls and stuff and still be epic and be finished in a concise three hundred pages without an entire two thousand year history. It's about real people and real magic and the things that it can make you do. Both good and bad. Simply put, it's for people who want to be entertained while at the same time immerse themselves in a place that's not all that different from where they might live. No matter how normal they're life might seem.

Must-have for making paper from plants
This is a must have book for anyone who wants to make paper from plants. It is packed with information not found elsewhere. The full-color illustrations & step-by-step instructions guide you seamlessly through the papermaking process.

The author starts out by explaining the many kinds of plant fibers and how to find, harvest and store them. All equipment needed is detailed next. Processing the fiber including cooking, beating, and retting is then covered.

Using dyes & additives as well as making your own is also discussed. Both Japanese and western sheet formation are then covered. Instructions are included for making your own paper press, mold & deckle and high-tech drying box.

Many recipes including mulberry, rose-of-sharon, & seaweed follow. Several projects including vegetable papyrus & shaped envelopes are next. A chart with many fibers listed by type can be used to make additional paper types.

A true learning experience =)
Our school used this book for art class! We're a little alternative school and everyone loved the projects....we had a hard time just choosing one =) It was easy for us to come to class day after day and work on projects for an hour n want to even work more on them....we all became really proud of the projects this book helped us make =)

Love it!
I really like this book.
It's easy to read and understand .
I made the dog armature witout any trouble. I did need to change the head somewhat though for the breed I wanted.
I am not a cat person but that cat planter is just too cute and I will probably make that.
The only thing I didn't like about this book is the author recommends buying paper pulp mix and I think that is a waste of money when it's simple to make your own.
But
I still love this book!
it has some great projects and lots of great tips too!

Fantastic Fun!
A ton of really creative and fun projects. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are lots of photos. Highly recommended!

The Pearl Harbor Papers: Inside the Japanese Plans

insight into Japanese plans
The Pearl Harbor Papers is a great body of insight into the planning of the Dec 7, 1941 attack. Although some of the charts breaking down the unit compositions are redundant (due to the same information in several different accounts), a look into the mind of Minoru Genda, the brilliant planner of the strike, is invaluable. Another interesting account is the battle diary of the destroyer Akigumo, which offers a unique view from that of a screening vessel. A real good supplement to the three volumes authored by Gordon Prange about the "Day of Infamy".

Excellent appendix to At Dawn We Slept
This book can be considered an appendix to Gordon W. Prange's "At Dawn We Slept, the untold story of Pearl Harbor." As an appendix, it is not a story but a collection of whatever significant material was found in the Prange archives related to the Pearl Harbor attack. As a result, it contains maps, diaries, comments, naval statistics, and so on, which are very helpful for the military specialist. Goldstein and Dillon, the co-editors, include a number of diaries, ship logs, or journals of commanders of the Japanese fleet covering the period from their departure from Hitokappu Bay to arrival day at Pearl Harbor, and these are in some cases very routine but do allow for a look at how the Japanese fleet dealt in a day-to-day way with the long and dangerous North Pacific trip and how they handled obstacles, such as refueling, morale and heavy seas.
However, the MOST IMPORTANT and significant part of this book, in my opinion, is at the very end of the book, and consists of an in-depth analysis of the Japanese military -- their planning, their methods, their ideas, their traditional beliefs -- by Masataka Chihaya. This critical analysis -- which should be read by all students of military history -- alone is well worth the price of the book for the student of the military and military tactics. But for the reader looking for battles, maneuvers, and other such action this book would be a disappointment. I give it 5 stars for the military student, 3 stars for others...

Essential primary sources
Gordon Prange, the dean of Pearl Harbor researchers, and his assistants Donald M. Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon, produced the essential trilogy on the before-during-and-after of the attack, "At Dawn We Slept" (1981), "December 7, 1941" (1988), and "Pearl Harbor: The Verdict of History" (1986). In this book, Dillon and Goldstein produce some of their essential primary sources, key Japanese documents about the planning, execution, and aftermath of the attack.

One of the key distinctives of Prange's research and writing was that, unlike so many other writers about the attack, he never forgot the Japanese half of the equation. In fact, the Pearl Harbor attack was a massive tactical undertaking, and the Japanese carried it off brilliantly. Focusing entirely on, for example, how much FDR knew and when, means ignoring the magnitude of the Japanese accomplishment.

Prange never made this mistake. And it's his research and interviews in Japan that produced this important work, assembled and published by his two assistants. While "The Pearl Harbor Papers" may be too esoteric for casual students of the Day of Infamy, people with a more serious interest in the attack, or the Pacific War generally, will find much here to keep themselves occupied.

Of particular interest are several papers and affidavits by Minoru Genda, the key planner of the attack. Also very interesting is "An Intimate Look at the Japanese Navy," by Masataka Chihaya, a former officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, who shortly after the end of the war cataloged his services' successes and failures. It's a very clear-eyed document, and deserves a close reading.

On the whole, this is a very good book to add to your shelf of Pearl Harbor books (and anyone who has such a shelf unquestionably needs this).

More to do with compliance than with PKI
The author seems to have "bought" into Public Key Infrastructure completely. Many chapters have a simliar formula:

1. Explain background on the compliance issue or standard

2. Then explain why PKI is so great and solves a majority of the problems with the particular issue being discussed.

This leaves a bit to be desired in some cases as the compliance-heavy discussions really move past PKI and into extremely detailed market compliance issues. This book will be useful for individuals looking for information having to do with Financial, e-Government, and Health Care compliance issues but not necessarily with PKI implementations for Enterprise organizations.

Good stuff
Good stuff on PKI: technical and business angles. Compliance was the main reason I took at look at this book, since HIPAA affects us day to day. I did appreciate the introduction to the technology (with technical depth). One thing I did really like it was that (to large degree) the book was vendor neutral. Some of the books through the RSA label have some spin. Definitely worth adding this book to the security collection.

Practical and timely book on security
This book covers a good chunk of digital security strategies with a focus on digital certificates (PKI). The first part of the book covers the PKI basics including technical and business topics. The next part of the book goes over the compliance laws (in relevant vertical areas) and how PKI (and compatible technologies) help resolve them. The last part of the book goes over resources and specific products/companies.

What I really liked about this book is it focus on how solve real problems such as compliance issues. Plus the case studies and specific vendor references make this is a good book to use for actual implementations.

Finally, this is a recent book on PKI and I have not seen too much on this topic as of late. The international coverage in the book also does well to keep the material relevant and current.

I would say this book would be ideal for security consultants as well as decision makers doing anything related to digital certificates and/or ecommerce in general.
