great story, Sabuda artwork and a non-violent resolution
This peaceful story is a lovely way to introduce another culture to young readers, and Robert Sabuda's artwork is beautiful. Mi Fei is an artist who is content to paint scrolls and live within his community until the villagers hear that a dragon has awakened to threaten the countryside and nominate him to face the foe. After a long journey, Mi Fei finds the dragon, who offers him a series of riddles/challenges to perform. Sabuda, better known for his pop-up masterpieces, brings the story to life with breathtaking images of vibrant color and flowing imagery.

Wonderful tale.

Wonderful story and beautifully illustrated.
This is the most wonderful children's book I have ever read. I loved it and my seven year old daughter loves it also. It tells a wonderful story about Chinese culture, love and courage. The illustration is absolutely beautiful!I've recommended it to many friends with children.

Excellent story and visual content.
The Paper Dragon has captured the heart of all the readers I have given copies to (I am on my eighth copy). The story of a humble artist sent to task against a fierce dragon, is portayed colorfully in word and pictures. The gate style print of the pictures lend themselves to become an intergral part of the storyline.

A touching lesson is given to us all, when we find that the dragon is thankful to be released from his reign of terror, and allowed to sleep again. I have heard my five year old tell the story to her friends.

Wonderful, Can't Go Wrong with Poppleton!
These books are such gems, and Poppleton in Fall is another one. We love these books. They are funny, orginal and very entertaining, great for boys and girls and parents will enjoy reading them as well!

Anthony, Janae, Danielle, and Nicholas LOVE Poppleton books!
Our names are Anthony, Janae, Danielle, and Nicholas. We are 2nd graders from Lockport, NY. We have read all of the Poppleton books with Ms. Fletcher. The book we liked best is Poppleton in Fall. The characters are Poppleton, Cherry Sue, and Zacko. Anthony's favorite part is when Poppleton stormed out the door. Janae's favorite part is when Poppleton went to the pancake breakfast. Danielle's favorite part is when Poppleton met the geese. Nicholas liked the part when Poppleton ate the pancakes for breakfast. We hope Cynthia Rylant writes a lot more Poppleton books!

Anthony LOVES the Poppleton books!
I am a 2nd grader at an elementary school in Lockport, NY. My name is Anthony. I have read all of the Poppleton books. My favorite book is Poppleton in Fall. My copy is weathered, written in.... obviously much loved!
This book is a treasure trove of ideas, inspiration and many many reasons
to remember and ACT on "Putting Your Heart" on paper.

Klauser is an extremely engaging writer. I found myself smiling in
response to what I thought were personal inside jokes like a lyric
from "Sound of Silence" being weaved into a paragraph about the
impact of the vocalization of a baby upon a group of tired, unengaged
adults.

This is a book I find myself continuing to return to over time. I don't

think I ever read through it front to back. Instead, I go to the Table
of Contents to find what calls to my spirit and then I usually find
myself reading a couple chapters before and after that chapter.

I can't imagine any reader coming away with less than 49 ideas to
try out and implement, much beyond what Klauser calls "Now You"
when she specifically asks you to apply what is in the chapter.

Read this book, treasure this book. You will soon notice it is becoming
weathered which is an honor bestowed upon books which are truly loved.

This is a book for everyone!!
This book is full of great ideas on communicating with the ones you love. It is a book not only about being heard but hearing what loved ones have to say to you.

Writing To Heal
As a writer, I find this book of imformative and creative ways to get your thoughts on paper, fabulous. As a mother who has had a child die, I found the chapter, 'Easing The Pain of Death' to be of interest. While I don't like the term 'recovery' for I feel a mother never recovers from the loss of a child (losing a child is not like breaking a bone, the bone does heal completely and there is recovery. The pain from a child's death will always remain), I was encouraged to read the message that writing does bring healing. I have found this to be true in my own experience. As an advocate for 'writing it down!' I recommend H. A. Klauser's book. ------Alice J. Wisler, author "Slices of Sunlight, A Cookbook of Memories".

Perfect
A perfect book of poems. Each poem makes me shake my head in wonder at such brilliance. His imagery is incredible. He can twist and turn any ordinary moment into a tornado humming with all aspects of life. Startling.

Honesty in print
Today I had the pleasure to hear Mark Cox, this year's Frost poet in residence at the Frost Place in Franconia, NH. He read from this lovely book of poems with such clarity, such honesty, that I was compelled to buy the book on the spot. He writes of the things that we all face, that we can all connect with, but still, with careful word choice and all the other fine things involved with the crafting of good poetry, he evokes our own experience as well. The poetry is accessible, careful, emotion-laden but not "sentimental". Build your own collection, using this one as a valued addition.

an uplifting, and satisfying feast of words
Cox is a poet whose work I admire and enjoy (and I'm a hard woman to please -- as I am both a poet and a literary critic). This collection is like a complicated American all -you can eat breakfast with surprises, freebies you never thought you'd get and a bottomless cup of thought provoking images to wash it down with.

See him "read" (aka, perform) these if you can, but in the meantime, buy the book and support the work!

Good for Toddlers too!
Both of my toddlers love the adventures of Toad. The vivid illustrations and rhyming text engage the 1-3 year olds as well. Young children who spend any amount of time with their parents in a car love to see the familiar sights in Toad On The Road: traffic lights, the gas station, the car wash. Cuddle up with your toddler today and read this classic!

Fun, fun, fun
This was- without a doubt- my preschooler's favorite book. The rhymes are lyrical, easy to pronounce, and contemporary. I prefer the "real" words in this book to Dr. Seuss' "made up" words. No snoozly wufflepumphs here- just a story of an enthusiastic toad with a a new car sharing the excitement of driving with his friends.

Terrific first reader
What a charming, delightful first reader! I began reading this book to my son when he was just over a year old, and for months it was always his first choice. The story and illustrations have a wonderful, irresistible energy akin to the best works of Dr. Seuss.

Definitely the ultimate!
I was really interested i learning to do paper marbeling - had looked all around for kits to no avail so I went looking for books and came across this one. There are a number of different techniques in here: Sumonagashi, oil color, watercolor, marbeling fabric and other materials and then the last chapter is "a gallery of contemporary marbeling." For each of the technique chapters it tells you the materials you need with pictures of them in case the words/descriptions aer not enough and then that's followed by a section on "basic techniques" that are specific to that technique. The writing is clear and straight forward and there are lots of good pictures to help. Following the basic instructions there are advanced instructions. Again, with good pictures and ideas. The end of the book has fabric as well as the gallery -I'm still a beginner so I haven't played around with fabric and the things in the gallery are pretty advanced but they sure are inspirational. For now I'll have fun with paper. Great book though - it has something for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist!

The Piesta Resistance
This book has very detailed how-to information and a smorgasbord of effects. It is a beginners and an advanced book all in one. A Good buy!

200 color images of marbeling designs are inspiring.
Marbling of fabric and paper has intrigued artesans for centuries. The Ultimate Marbling Handbook explores the art of marbling, materials used, techniques and beautiful images of marbled color captured on paper, fabric and other materials. The colors are vivid, designs are unique and imanigative. Marble patterns fascinate, from the random stone or rock, to the colors combed into repeating patterns, no two the same.

Advanced designs of many artists are shared and techniques are explained. Diane Maurer-Mathison is a gifted artist and has authored a beautiful book suitable for the beginning to experienced marble artist.

The Walker in Shadows (G K Hall Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by G K Hall & Co (March, 1997)
Author: Barbara Michaels
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

Another Page-Turner from Michaels
This is a ghost story with an absorbing historical edge. To be honest, Michaels has treated this theme better in other of her novels and the characterizations are a bit superficial. Nevertheless, these are petty qualms in the face of such an entertaining work. The novel is set in the late 70s or early 80s, and some of the characters' ideas, not to mention the dialogue, are ludicrously out of date (actually, I enjoyed this for nostalgic reasons, but younger readers may be bewildered and/or roll their eyes a lot!). I have read this novel three or four times, and although I don't love it now as much as I did upon my first reading, I still highly reommend it. Michaels is simply a master of suspense, and this book will grip you and not let go until you turn the very last page.

TAKE A WALK INTO TERROR!
Walker in the Shadows is a book that is timeless in it's intensity and thrilling from start to finish. Imagine yourself in an old, historical home, complete with things that go bump in the night. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a whisp of smoke, curtains blowing with no breeze to sway them, a glowing light with no apparent source...well, you get the idea! Ms. Michaels has wonderful three dimensional characters to go along with her chilling tale that takes you from the present to the past, with all the mystery and intrigue you can possibly desire. Walker is a wonderful book to cuddle up with on a dark, stormy night...but do yourself a favor...you may want to leave the night light on after you read it!

Don't miss this one!
I started reading Barbara Michaels' (aka Elizabeth Peters) novels a loooong time ago. Of the three spookiest, this is one, along with Ammie Come Home and The Crying Child. Every time I re-read one of these three, I get the cold shudders. The atmospheres are wonderfully creepy, and the characters are like normal, real-life folks who find themselves in seemingly impossible situations. Grab this author's books wherever and whenever you can, and turn on all the lights in the house before you start reading!

Women Will Love This Book!!
Although I wasn't enamored by the book cover, I can assure you that this is one of the most powerfully written books I have read in a long time. As I read each of the personal letters and journal writings, I kept saying to myself, "YES! YES! YES!" Finally, there is an opportunity to look beyond the surface to both feel and understand the hearts of African American men. One moment, I was in tears, the next I was angry and then I was bursting at the seams with laughter. The experiences of these men as they write about their relationships with their parents, their children, their wives, thier lovers and themselves have all helped to bring greater clarity for me as I try to grow in my relationship with my beautiful chocolate man. Thanks Blanchard, Shelton and Goodman! What a personal education this book has been for me!

Polar Bears Past Bedtime
This book was a good learning book, but still it showed more miracles and wonder, but there's no doubt it's a learning book. Otherwise, I don't know what else to say about this book, and I'm glad because I don't want to spoil a single surprise.

Polar Bear Perfect!
This book was fun. I like it when Jack and Annie go to the Artic. They have to act liked polarbears to get off some thin ice.I liked this book because it was full of adventure.

Polar Bears
It's icicle city when the Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie to the freezing Arctic tundra. Luckily, a seal hunter on a dogsled (led by huskies) lends them warm clothes and takes them back to his igloo (which in Inuit, means house.) They run out to feed the huskies and Jack accidentally takes masks that the seal hunter made. Annie finds some polar bears and they play tag with them. Jack suggests they go back to the igloo, but Annie and the polar bears lead him down a little hill. Then, unluckily the ice starts to crack. A female polar bear (which happens to be the mother of the polar bears that Jack and Annie found) comes to rescue them. Jack reads in the reasearch guide that even though female polar bears can weigh up to 750 lbs., they can slide on very thin ice. So, the female polar bear takes the cubs and slides on the ice. Jack and Annie put on the masks and slide on the ice, too. When they get up the hill, they see a burst of red, green, and purple in the sky (which happens to be the Northern Lights.) But after Jack read that fact, the lights disappeared. The seal hunter finds them and takes them back to the igloo. Then, Jack and Annie think they've solved the riddle. The riddle is: I cover what's real, and hide what's true. But sometimes I bring out the courage in you. What am I? They think it's a mask, and they're right! But before they can go home, they find another riddle. Soon, they solve it.
