The Pump House Gang
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (January, 1992)
Author: Tom James Wolfe
Amazon base price: $48.00
Average review score:

"The Pump House Gang" story only: Close but no cigar.
Because I grew up in La Jolla, and graduated from La Jolla High School, class of 1962, I was only interested in the short story: "The Pump House Gang."

I know most of the characters in the story, and believe that Wolfe did a good job describing them. His account of the La Jollans visiting the Watts Riots was right on. I visited the riot zone myself, and enjoyed the same experiences as Shine, Nelander, and Sterncorb.

Wolfe came as close as any "outsider" has been able to do, in analyzing the La Jolla nut house, the institution where the walls fell down, and none of the inmates left.

Good set of essays; not Wolfe's best
Tom Wolfe pursues the idea that many Americans and Brits since World War II have been checking out of mainstream status competition in favor of pursuing status within distinct subcultures. This plays out in some interesting ways--most notably Wolfe watches Natalie Wood pursue status in a more traditional way by acquiring knowledge of art and even some Old Masters, while others play their own status game around photographing celebrities, in this case Wood herself. Essays on Hugh Hefner, California surf culture, and London mods are also worthwhile, as is a comic piece on Wolfe's misadventures with an "automated hotel". Wolfe does bog down at times, however, in the minute stylistic details of the groups he covers; if you are not that interested in style in and of itself, your eyes may glaze over those passages. Still, this is a good read for anyone interested in subcultures (especially of the 1960s) and status-seeking.

A social critic a la carte
Tom Wolfe is brilliant in capturing a generation's feel. This collection of short stories describes the socialites, the freaks and the trend-setters. Wolfe's language manages to show the physical as well as the atmosphere within a few short sentences. If you liked his wit in "The Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test" and his observations (social x-rays) in "Bonfire of the Vaities," you will love this collection of social critical essays.

Country Weekend Entertaining : Seasonal recipes from loaves and fishes and the Bridgehampton Inn

Anna Pump grew up on a farm in Germany, near the Danish border, surrounded by a bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, home-baked bread, and hand-churned butter. After moving to the U.S. in the 1980s, Pump established Loaves and Fishes, a catering and take-out shop in the seaside yet rural part of Long Island, New York, known as The Hamptons. She then opened a bed-and-breakfast called The Bridgehampton Inn in 1994.

Pump's cooking relies on excellent fresh ingredients in season, so her 175 recipes are grouped as Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Grilled Chicken Salad, succulent from breasts marinated with soy, sesame oil, and white wine; Potato and Corn Salad with unexpected fresh herbs; and Spinach Salad with Sliced Peaches are typical Spring/Summer dishes Pump offers. Reflecting Scandinavian influences in her cooking, dessert might bring the luxury of fresh currants and raspberries transformed into Red Grits with Cream. (Once made with barley meal, hence its name, corn or potato starch is now used to thicken this ruby jewel of a dish.)

Fridays, year round, Pump bakes a huge ham glazed with marmalade, apple cider, and mustard. Guests enjoy slices of it with their eggs at breakfast and in sandwiches later in the day. You may prefer it for dinner, accompanied by Pump's cauliflower, mashed and roasted with garlic and olive oil. Complete the meal with a Macadamia Nut Tart, cranberries studding its pecan pie-rich filling. Sixteen color photos and short poems and quotes praising the good life punctuate this book with charming thoughts. --Dana Jacobi

Good Cooking
I've had this book for 3 years now, and finally felt the urge to write a review because of the lack of reviews on this site. It is, put quity simply, a good cooking cookbook. Anna is a friendly writer, who doesn't name drop like other cookbok authors who live in our area do. The recipes are not way "out there" and the home cook can make them, just fine. I'm awaiting Anna's next cookbook, hoping there will be one.

A Lovely Book
This award-nominated book is absolutely delicious! Great pictures, stunning recipes - a must have for every gastronome!

Very kitschy!
I bought a couple copies for graduation gifts, just to be silly. I also bought one for myself, and I send a postcard whenever I wish I had the time and resources to take a road trip across America. It's not your normal postcard book!

Great Nostalgic Reminder and History
Having grown up in a family that on both sides was into the gas/oil biz in someway, this is special!

Well done with just great photos and art. The written commentary is well done also, flowing in between the graphics and following chronologically the development of this industry giant.

There is just a wealth of neat stuff in this for all of us who can delve back in time to these great stations!

steam jet ejector for vacuum system
I do't know how I can buy books in Shanghai China. Are there any office in China.

Best book on the subject!
This is the best book on the subject I have ever seen. It takes you by the hand and quickly tells you what chapter you have to study for your particular problem, without having to browse through the entire book. The information is easy to understand, very complete and obviously written by an engineer that needed to do the same things as what you bought the book for. Since he could not find the information anywhere, he wrote a book himself and filled it with a lifetime experience of working with steam ejectors.

A phenomenal review of one of the greater events of the 80's
I was delighted to be an attendee of the 1st International Pump Symposium, and found this book to be an adequate and poigniant sampling of some of the better talks and lectures presented therein. I found a piece on replication of hose gaskets to be quite exhilirating. Face it, pump-based literature has finally come into its own. Girls are cool, guys are not.

A thorough guide to centrifugal pumps.
I bought this book when I became the mechanical maintenance engineer in an industrial plant with over 450 centrifugal pumps. I was a junior engineer with no pump experience and this book certainly helped me understand how the pumps work, how to read pump curves, minimum flows, etc.

There are still sections in this book that I have yet to read: bearings, shaft sealing, installation and alignment - a wealth of knowledge should I need it.

Definitely worth having!

Useful for collectors, and for time-travelers, too
If you are out to collect gas-station artifacts this book will be useful in that it shows photos of a myriad of pumps, pump globes, petroleum product containers, and signage, along with price ranges. However, the display of 137 historic gas-station photos suffers from rather muddy reproduction on matte-surface paper that prevents showing the detail to be found in the original glossy prints. (On slick magazine paper, I've seen many of these same photos come to life. Why any photo book is printed on anything but slick paper is beyond me.) Despite this, the sheer volume of stuff and the text outlining the history of gasoline merchandising should be enough to engage the imagination of highway travel fans.

Outragous advice!
This book was one book that came out and grabbed my attention; it was quick and to the point. Edwards talks about leaving college and entering the corporate jungle. I advise all college students and graduates to read this if they can find a copy. I know that he will be reviewing the book soon and adding some new advice to it. Edwards talks from experience and can relate to many situations we all face while in college and out. He knows what companies are looking for, becuase he was an Personel Director at GM for a long time. Now as an entrepreneur he knows what to look for in people whe hiring. He even started hs own business which is doing great! I give this book two thumbs up!

Excellent Information
This manual has been replaced by IFSTA's new Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator handbook. This book contains more of the technical knowledge of pumping apparatus than the new edition but isn't as practical. This book has a good section on apparatus purchasing, which doesn't apply to most of us but is surely useful to some.

This book is no longer available but if you could get this book used it might be beneficial for a pumping apparatus operator or anyone who works with Fire Department Pumping Apparatus. Fire Pump theory is well explained as is apparatus testing and maintenance. This book is much better for the information it but is much less practical than the revised version and doesn't quite give the skills necessary to operate a pump. The information in this book is beneficial to the information that is in the new version.

A Book For Light Commercial Building
At the first time When I studied the book I was unfamiliar with the subject. I can say that this book gave me a useful background to design the GSHP systems and to start to search more. But unfortuanely it can not be a good reference for commercial buildings based on it's title. Especially it is not a good source for design of Hybrid systems that are more applicable for commercial buildings. However, I would like to appreciate the efforts of the writers that prepared such a valuable book at a time that there are not enough sources in the field of GSHP design.
