Wonderful Description of a Wonderful Exhibit
A Day in the Country was an exhibit mounted in the early '80's, using the theme that the Impressionist style of painting revolved around the dynamic of Parisian artists portraying the landscapes nearby their city. Viewing the exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute with an expert guide, we felt that we received full benefit from the collection. A memorable event.

The book built around the exhibit takes an understanding of Impressionism much deeper, involving not only personalities and landscapes, but also the international political dynamics as well. Who would have thought of Impressionism as a French nationalistic statement?

There is far too much in the book to go into, even if I was an art expert (which I am not). But, I am VERY pleased to own this, and will treasure the information that increases my appreciation of a favorite art form.

Left a great impression
This wonderful book is a catalogue of an exhibition organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Reunion des Musees Nationaux, Paris. The artists represented include Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Seurat, Gauguin, Manet, Signac and Pissarro.

But this book is not merely a catalogue - it stands alone as an excellent and readable book about the artistic and social worlds of the artists. The essays are interesting and mercifully free of inaccessible jargon, so the generalist really can learn something about the context of the Impressionist movement, the paintings themselves and the artists.
An example: the opening of the essay 'The Impressionist Landscape and the Image of France: " When the Impressionists began to paint the French landscape in the 1860s, they were not alone. Several satirical writers had already counted more landscape painters than tourists or peasants in their travels through the French countryside, and the official Salon exhibitions held annually in Paris were all but dominated by French landscapes. Books and manuals about landscape painting for both amateur and professional artists abounded, and if there was a national genre in French art, it was surely landscape. The painters were joined by a legion of printmakers, draftsmen, and popular illustrators in an almost frantic collective attempt to record the national physiognamy."

The essays are:
'Impressionism in Context' - includes information on the conception of the exhibition, the grouping of paintings etc; 'The Impressionist Landscape and the Image of France' (extract above) which includes reference to contemporaneous politics, writing, national movements such as rejection of historical France, the concept of nature of the Impressionsts etc; 'The French Landscape Sensibility'; 'The Cradle of Impressionism' - about the Seine landscape and villages; 'The Urban Landscape' - Paris; ' Rivers, Roads and Trains'; 'Pissarro, Cezanne and the School of Pontoise'; 'Private and Public Gardens'; 'The Fields of France' (lots of haystacks!); 'Impressionism and the Sea'; 'The Retreat from Paris'; 'Impressionism and the Popular Imagination'. An appendix essay is 'The Landscape in French Nineteenth-Century Photography'. The paintings are grouped under each of the themes represented by the essays.

Another standout feature of the book is the amount of contextual detail accompanying each work of art. So, for example, the first work presented is Beach at Honfleur by Claude Monet. The colour reproduction is good quality, and takes a full page. The accompanying text on the facing page explains what Monet was doing , how the painting came to be painted.

A marvellous book, a valuable addition to any personal library. I would place it in the 'must have' category for an art collection in a secondary school or college library where Art is a course of study, and public libraries - because of its simultaneous accessibility and depth of information - it goes so much further than a book merely of reproductions.

The BEST decorating book for kids' rooms
I've looked through several different books for decorating kids' rooms and if I could only keep one this would be it. This book shows you how to create a beautiful room for your children by just using paint...painting the walls, ceiling furniture, floor, rug, headboard, shelves, decorating accessories or whatever. I am not an artist or interior decorator but I felt like I could do every project described. Most decorating books just show you a finished room and a few comments about different unique characteristics of the room. This book gives detailed instructions for how to create the entire theme yourself. Some of the themes described are castle, safari adventure, carribbean, fairy tale, circus and many more. If you want to transform your child's room into a creative haven all on your own then you MUST have this book.

Spectacular
Just the sound of their names, makes your hair stand on end, and your heart beat faster. Bold Ruler, the sire of so many greats. Secretariat, can anyone ever forget his thirty one length win in the Belmont, making him the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Ruffian, the magnificent filly who came to grief in the fateful match race against Foolish Pleasure . The names go on Alleged, Spectacular Bid, Every page has a story to tell of these champions of the track

This is the book of all books for the thoroughbred lover. None can compare. The text is beautifully written, making you feel you know each animal, and all their quirks. The paintings by Reeves are magnificent, you feel you could reach out and stroke a velvet nose, or caress a silky ear.

I purchsed my copy in 1980 and along side my 1976 copy of Classic Lines these books are my pride and joy.

If you love thoroughbreds, this book is a must, you will thrill every time you read it.

excellent resource for faux!
I have dozens of books on faux and color theory. This book is the best one. It combines both subjects. It covers the different faux techniques as well as how to apply color. The photos of finished rooms are great, and the photos of each step make learning very easy. Even though I am a professional decorative painter, I still am learning more from this book.

Much plusher than most stenciling guides, this volume is filled with gorgeous stenciled rooms, complete directions, and templates for each pattern (about 30 in all). Refreshingly, there's barely a floral among them; instead there are marvelous historically inspired designs: heraldic, high Victorian, "Moderne," Indian paisley, Moroccan tile, Scandinavian folk art, ancient Egypt, and French Empire. The first two chapters provide full coverage of tools, supplies, and basic techniques, including making the stencil, various painting methods, planning large projects, and tips on finishes and texturing. Novices can probably handle the simpler geometrics, but many of the projects seem to demand some degree of practice. Quite a few have multiple overlays, and the all-over wall and floor patterns are best attempted by the more experienced. For those who have had their fill of the easy flowery, folksy stuff, this is a wonderful book, with vivid, sophisticated designs created by a master stencil artist. --Amy Handy

Very Useful
This book is very useful if you need to make signs or addresses in stained glass. The patterns are practical and well thought out. There are enough fonts offered that you will be able to find one that suits the correct time period or look you are trying to achieve. I am not aware of another book like this that specializes in only letters and numbers so it fills a specific need and is essential for that specialty.
