we bought this for our daughter when she was 16 months old. she already loved to color on paper, but this is great. some of the scenes are already colored, so all she has to do is finish the picture. this book is very entertaining. when she has colored a lot on each page, all i do is wipe it clean with paper-towel--it is really that easy. great buy!

This book is loaded with lot's of valuable information on how to use colors in oil painting. I find it a very helpful reference for choosing, mixing, and applying color.
Each painter will greatly benefit from the material contained in this book. It's an excellent source of information as well as inspiration to anyone who enjoys painting in this medium.

The author defines and explains such basic terms and concepts as hue, value, intensity, and temperature. He lists the most commonly used colors and describes their behavior when mixed or straight out of the tube. There is a chapter on mixing color, how to make colors warmer, cooler,more intense, lighter or darker, grayer;and how to correct mixing mistakes.
Also, the author discusses color schemes; some of the palettes of the old masters; palettes for specific types of subject matter. This book also helps to sharpen your eye to color and all the atmospheric conditions. Any time I have a question, or problem I just pick up this book.
This is the best book I've found to have as a permanent reference for the studio.

This is one of the best art instruction books that is now available.It is an excellent follow-up to Creative Discoveries in Watermedia published in 1998.Creative Composition & Design is a workshop in book format. Pat Dews warm positive attitude comes across on each page.The book is very well designed with excellent color photographs of art that will inspire you to create.The tips that are listed on various pages are very helpful.The section showing how different artists work on design and composition is an excellent way to gain additional ideas for your own work.The critiques shown of student work places you right into the workshop experience.You will see how paintings are resolved.You will learn a lot from this book and return to it often.I highly recommend this book-it was worth waiting for.If you are unable to attend a workshop with Pat Dews this is the next best thing.If you have been fortunate enough to take a workshop with Pat Dews this book will act as an excellent follow-up.

Large full color step-by-step photographs show the reader how to acheive successful results. A novice can understand the instructions and get results quickly. Techniques that are especially attractive: faux leather look, patina verdigris, painted mosaics, crackle finish. From the start to the last page- a wealth of valuable information on painting and decorating furniture. Highly recommended for any "do-it-yourself" furniture and home decorators

As a beginning pastelist, I found this book to be quite an inspirational journey. It showed me possibilities and beauty in a medium unfamiliar to most. I had a sense of being educated almost unconciuosly because I was so engrossed in the information and drawn into the beauty of this book. I highly recommend it as a reference tool and as a treat for the eyes.

Of all the books on silk painting, (and I've looked at most of them,) this one is unique in the way it gives the reader tips on working with different types of dyes and ideas on how to fix the snags you will inevitably run into. In addition, it offers innovative approaches to mounting and stretching the silk. Details on various techniques, which are often glossed over or summarized with too little detail in other books, are plentiful here. This book doesn't skimp on the colorful and inspiring examples of artist's work either. A must for any artist seriously investigating the medium.

What a lot of great ideas in this book. The instructions were easy to follow, and the designs were so beautiful. I am just a beginner with designing for my home, but with this book I know I can do it. Thanks for the wonderful book.
