My only regret is that this is not a hardcover. It deserves that treatment. The paintings are gorgeous and well worth the price.

BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU LOVE MOVIES AND PAINTINGS
Here is one of those rare, intelligent books about films and paintings that is simply a must-read for anyone who wants to sharpen his or her cinematic eye. The book explores the influence that painting has had on film, using specific movie classics to explore this fascinating theme, such as Rohmer's exquisite comedy The Marquise of O, photographed by the great Nestor Almendros. The book is as rich as its subject, with in-depth, scholarly observations that are as fun to read as an adventure novel. But this isn't fiction by any means. It's a revelation of the synthesis, the profound and oftentimes spiritual connection that exists between the members of the family of Art. It's one of those books that once you've finished reading it--even a chapter or two--you feel like saying: I've learned something worth learning. This is not for intellectuals only. I'm only sorry that it's not available, to my knowledge, in a hardcover edition because it's a must, as I said, in any movie lover's library, a book written by someone who knows and loves what she's writing about!

Wonderful introduction to glass painting
This is a wonderful introduction to the basics of glass painting. Color photo and step-by-step instructions help guide you through a wide variety of techniques.

The book starts out by quickly demonstrating many basic techniques as well as covering safety & materials. Some techniques include outlining, marbling, blending, adding gems, frosting, gilding, & using a self-adhesive lead or gel.

There are many great multi-cultural projects for learning each technique. These include an Asian floral plate, Tiffany window panel, Celtic knotwork frame, Victorian rose bowl, Egyptian bookmark, & a mosaic box.

Templates accompany each project. There are a few extra templates given for each style as well. Though it may take some practice to create a masterpiece, this is definitely the book to get you there.

Helps fill a critical gap in children's literature
As the mother of a six year-old, I'm grateful for the appearance of this series, The Life and Work of... There aren't many art books for children this age; most are simply too long and involved for young children. This series is filled with large type text, beautiful reproductions, captivating period photos and, most important, a colorful narrative that is sure to appeal to children 4-8. Although my son is quite an accomplished reader for his age, he would never have managed the pronunciation of many foreign words in this text: Monet's wife Camille Doncieux, the Thames River, Rouen, etc. Given the helpful glossary at the end, I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't add a pronunciation guide. Still I won't take a star away from this series for the error, because I believe the book is more profitably shared by parent and child than read on its own. Children will laugh on their own at the sight of the pigeon on Monet's head, but they will need you to help them get more out of the paintings.

Organizational excellence, personal style
This is the most detailed and most instructive art book that I've come across in a month of Sundays. The author, celebrated fine artist Tom Hill, leaves no doubt of which brush to choose, which material to select, and then he gives you a step-by-step illustrated image of how to do it and how it is supposed to look. From the very first page, he tells you how to set up a studio, and has numerous fine hints for tools you can make yourself in lieu of expensive purchases. His section on selection of, prepping and stretching watercolor paper is like an art class session. He explains exactly what you will need for studio painting, for field work and it is all done in such a relaxed friendly atmosphere that you honestly feel this teacher is standing at your elbow. If you have ever wanted to explore the mysteries of watercolor painting and its various elements, this specifically detailed guidebook is without peer!

Not Just for Oil Painters - a color reference for everyone
You will appreciate and use this book as a color reference, and as a philosophy explaining why we do paint and view things the way we do. The author Helen Van Wyk, in the introduction shares her invaluable experiences that she learned while studying with the Master M. A. Rasko in the 1940's. The articles he wrote are no longer in print and can't be found so she shares some of his fundamental approaches to painting here. A most important and valuable learning experience for me, was how the six colors of the spectrum and their admixtures, vary in three ways, in tone intensity and hue. In other words; brown, tan and orange are variants of yellow in regards to the tone, intensity and hue that you mix the colors. She uses the example of a Yellow Lemon on a table on a darker toned background, and you might describe the colors as brown, rust, tan or woody but it is actually a yellow lemon on a yellow table on a yellow background. Buy this Book if you want to enjoy the colorful world around you!

Color Transfer is an innovative, practical tool for painting
I highly recommend Color Transfer to any water color painter who is trying to achieve a new technique in his/her painting. The ideas are explained clearly showing step-by-step methodology. Not only is the book a practical guide, it is inspirational for the painter who is stuck in the same old rutt. The author is truly passionate about his work and subject matter. Any painter, experienced or novice, can truly gain from this book

Colors Changing Hue
Published in Paperback by C & T Pub (April, 1995)
Authors: Yvonne Porcella, Harold Nadel, and Joyce E. Lytle
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $35.00
Stores offer so many choices of beautiful fabrics, so why bother to decorate your own? One look at the exquisite creations of Yvonne Porcella should convince anyone who enjoys crafting with fabric that it's worth a try. Using acrylic paints and natural-fiber fabrics, Porcella produces clothing, quilts, and other items that are layered, appliqued, and/or pieced with her lovely hand-colored fabrics. She explains various fabric painting techniques, then provides loads of ideas for using hand-decorated fabrics to make wall hangings, quilts, vests, dolls, and gift wraps. The text includes many reduced-size patterns and diagrams, and a tear-out section at the end gives a full-size vest pattern.

This is the best book on fabric painting I have read.
I have been drawn into the world of textile art through the pathway of silk ribbon flowers, then silk ribbon embroidery and silk dyeing and now fabric painting. For those who are interested in creating wearable art, not just cutesy decorated T-shirts and sweatshirts shown in most craft books, this is the best book on fabric PAINTING (not dyeing) I have seen among the many I have read. Porcella's work is so beautiful and inspiring, the reader's imagination really takes wing. The techniques described are simple, the instructions clear. If you're interested in this craft, this is the first book you should read.
