Serge Lifar, the last great protégé of the incomparable impresario Sergei Diaghilev, went broke touring America with his European dance company in 1933. He had one important asset: his extensive collection of paintings for set designs from Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and from his own productions at the Paris Opera. He sold the lot, including paintings by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, to Hartford, Connecticut's Wadsworth Atheneum for $l0,000--an extravagant sum at the time--and paid for his dancers' fares home.

One look at this volume of drawings, paintings, and sketches by Georges Braque, Max Ernst, Naum Gabo, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Matisse, Joan Miró, Amedeo Modigliani, Picasso, Georges Rouault, and others shows what a coup acquiring the Lifar collection turned out to be. Augmented by photos of costumes from Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the book documents the remarkable collaborations among artists, composers, choreographers, and dancers that flourished at the dawn of modernism in European art and culture.

The delectable Art of Ballets Russes shows 188 works of art and 32 costumes from 1909 to 1929, mostly for the Ballets Russes productions, that remain a touchstone for the world's theater and dance designers. It also includes wonderful vintage photographs of Ballets Russes dancers on-stage, in front of mammoth sets designed by the greatest painters of Europe.

Alexander Schouvaloff, founder of the Theatre Museum branch of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, has written a thoroughly engaging, detailed essay on theater design that places the Lifar collection in historical context. His anecdotes are priceless. He relates tales of dancers who stood still while Matisse painted flowers on their skirts and of others who could barely execute their leaps in Giorgio de Chirico's weighty dresses encrusted with architectural motifs. This informative, erudite book evokes the beauty and excitement of the Paris in which Diaghilev worked his singular magic.

Excellent, Comprehensive
Robert Lovett's book is different from many watercolor books that simply show a picture and have a brief blurb on the picture.
Lovett has a very thorough and systematic way of teaching and explains each lesson in great depth. This book tackles the key elements of creating an effective painting and shows probably over 100 of Lovett's paintings. Lovett is a gifted teacher and painter and his book is highly effective. Lovett has a very colorful, yet traditional painting style, so if you are looking for experimental or california school loose, look elsewhere.

A West Coast Vision
If you are interested in expanding your knowledge of artists on this continent (North America), specifically the West Coast, I'd recommend this erudite volume on the work of Emily Carr. Emily Carr was a late-bloomer, but when she found her own she produced haunting canvases of her encounters with Northwest Coast Native Art, specifically totems. This was followed by strong formalized images of the coastal rainforest. Late in her life she painted expressive landscapes. I recently read that a joint exhibit of Emily Carr, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Frida Kahlo "Places of their Own" will be travelling to various venues in 200l/2002.

A master landscape painter at work
Normally I shy away from how-to art books. They tend to rely too much on gimmicky techniques, and the art sometimes seems to lack sincerity. This book, however, is filled with images of Strisik's small, beautiful oils and informative insights into his methods.

Strisik seems to prefer autumn and winter landscapes, but he travels extensively and captures scenes from around the world. There are many color plates that showcase his lovely muted-yet-rich palette. There are also many black-and-white photos, which is not a problem, since Strisik's tonal scale is so accomplished.

There are demonstrations with the paintings depicted in various stages of completion. I found the comparisons of photos of the painter's on-site locations with the finished painting to be especially revealing.

Strisik comes across as a master painter who is always searching, always striving, for the fullest expression of beauty in nature. Both serious and beginner landscape painters can benefit from this book.

A full-color collection of breathtaking works of art
Compiled, written, and edited by Maine art expert Carl Little and Arnold Skolnick (owner and founder of Chameleon Books), The Art Of Maine In Winter is a visually splendid, full-color collection of breathtaking works of art capturing Maine during the winter months. Ranging from abstract-style oil on canvas landscapes of snow, to woodcuts of young people enjoying simple winter sports, to impressionistic renditions of hard work among tall trees, The Art Of Maine In Winter presents an eclectic variety of gorgeous artworks, along with brief yet thoughtful commentary on the spirit of the art itself and the land reflected in the artist's view. The Art Of Maine In Winter is a welcome and highly recommended addition to any personal, art school, or community library Art History collection.

Frightening
The exhibit was breath-taking and the illustrations in this collection succeed in communicating some of the loneliness that pervades the paintings. I can't wait until someone translates the Prison Notes in their entirety.
