Very impressed!Inspiring to see combinations of leadlight, painting and all the variants of slumping and etching/sandblasting. So many fantastic ideas, traditional and contemporary.Great to see a book that shows ideas suitable to apply to large scale projects as well as smaller jobs. Best glass book I've found so far.

This is the book to buy!I have been searching for a book such as this for years! Scholars and novices alike will not be dissapointed with this comprehensive text by Elizabeth Zarur and Charles Lovell. This exceptional publication documents an exhibit of mexican retablos and ex votos held at the New Mexico State University Art Gallery (holders of THE largest collection of retablos in the USA). The catolog raisonne provides a wealth of information on the topic, that will become an invaluable reference source. The publication however goes far beyond documenting the exhibit. Undoubtably this text will become the "bible" for chronicling and deciphering these treasures. The two editors have brought together prominent scholars on the subject who comment on the works from an interdisciplinary ( art history, anthropological, folk art, and religioious) point of view. The iconography within the retablos is clearly deciphered throughout the text in a manner that will enlighten the reader who is new to these works, and will serve as an invaluable resource to the learned hagiographer. Additional topics in the text will provide the reader with information that has not been covered in other texts on the subject, such as: insights into religious orders who influenced the visual qualities and symbolism in the artworks, conservation and care of retablos in general. Of particular interest is editor Zarur's commentary on the impact of Spanish missionization upon the indigenous people of Mexico. She presents profound insights into how the fusing of these cultures impacted and altered visual representations of the saints and cult imagery. The visual reproductions of the works are exceptional! One can feel as though they are viewing the works in person. Brushstrokes, tin surfaces, and age of the artworks are evident in the photographs. Many of the works are complemented with close up photos. If you purchase one book on Mexican religious artworks this is it. You will not be disappointed with this one!

A unique and exciting book on expression in art"Art as Expression" caught my eye because of its different approach to writing about art. Henry Peacock is obviously a talented and experienced teacher who is able to express his ideas and also demonstrate by illustration, to beginners like myself, the various aspects of structure, color, composition and expression. No doubt this would also be valuable to more experienced artists because of its depth of information. It is a book you would refer to often and seems to capture a void in the market. Well worth looking at.

Art Deco Painting
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Ltd (12 July, 1990)

A must-have for Deco enthusiasts, and for paintersI just adore this book, and it never fails to inspire me. This book is of particular interest to those who have already been fans of the Art Deco style-- both in its European and American manifestations-- for many years. Why? Because many survey books on Deco tend to include many of the same, familiar images of posters-- the Cassandre prints (albeit fabulous), etc. But this book is full of images which were utterly "new" to me-- perhaps only 3 or 4 did I recognize: some Sheeler, Stuart Davis, O'Keeffe. Lucie-Smith's essays are well-informed, too. If you love the extraordinarily sophisticated, cool, eclectic, clean look of Deco (which, IMHO, has never been surpassed for pure economy and chic-ness) then snap this book up. It will be worth its weight in gold to you alone, if it "turns you onto" the artwork of unsung British portraitist Meredith Frampton!

Art from the Land: Dialogues With the Kluge-Ruhe Collection of Australian Aboriginal Art

Excellent introduction to Aboriginal art *****The Kluge-Ruhe collection, housed at the University of Virginia, is among the largest and most diverse Aboriginal art collections outside of Australia. This book, the first published guide to the collection, highlights many of the important works held by the Kluge-Ruhe, covering many Aboriginal cultures and regions with a strong focus on Arnhem Land and the central desert. Thought provoking essays by many of the top scholars in the field accompany beautiful color images of many sigificant pieces. Unlike many introductions to Aboriginal art, this guide discusses themes in depth, providing solid meaningful analysis which places the art in its social context, rather than the usual 'Bark Painting of a Bird' type annotation, which provides no insight into the culture which produced it. Highly recommended--you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely superb.Stunning. Very high quality paper and printing. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of first class reproductions. Studiously non-political text. Expensive but worth every bit of it. An aspect of the Third Reich that the public is rarely, if ever, permitted to see.

Getting "Real" With Art and KidsFor those working in the schools and who value the joyful impact of art with children, this book has it all! It is a power-packed manual for professional teachers, aides and anyone needing more guidance to open the creative doors for themsleves and children. You will find the source's guides in the back of the book worth the price alone. The clarity in the text is especially to be appreciated; no "gobbeldy-gook and no nonsense" here! The presentation of ways to incorporate art into total curriculum is one to open our eyes and to value its potential for carrying any other subject matter. Full of ideas for projects with morsels of philosophy about the arts tucked in, it allows teachers to open their own minds and rid themselves of their own "art blocks." I would say no teacher should be without this book. Good for you Marlene Gharbo Linderman! At last a book for us all who love and cherish art in schools.
