Best Art Book I've Ever Read and Really Used
If you want an exciting and adventurous read, get this book. It turns you on aesthetically as well as giving you a strong dose of artistic guidance, incorporating wisdom in a special spiritual way.
It has tremendous humor with well written and direct instructions in the "how-tos," and yet, at the same time, it encourages you to be an adventurer and to create your own way of expressing yourself in paint. Although there are basic rules, it transcends mere technique and allows you the freedom to follow your own path. I love this book!

Free your creative spirit to fly
While this book is an excellent manual on fresh ideas, innovative techniques, and unusual and creative uses for painting materials, it is much more. With each turn of the page, Stroud beckens your artistic spirit to soar with the possibilities that lay before all of us who crave to create with freshness and vitality. The art is a visual feast and the text is evidence that the author is both an accomplished painter as well as a an author with wit, clarity and something worth saying. This is a must for everyone who is serious about their journey as an artist.

Engagingly personal
A wonderful book, written with the freshness and exuberance that characterize the author's paintings, many of which appear here in all their splendor. The illustrations are themselves worth the price of the book, but they are perfectly complemented by an eminently readable text that is concise and to the point, yet engagingly personal in tone. The author's remarks are keyed to the paintings and provide practical directions and inspiring observations on everything from materials to techniques to subtleties of composition, form and color. Very highly recommended.

A great book for readers with an imagination
When i got this book i was so enthralled by it. It caught my attention in the first chapter. This book would be perfect for someone with a good imagination. This is one of the best books that i've read, and i highly recomend it!

Meaningful story
I was impressed by the depth of this story and the way it captured the pain of both loss and everyday adolescence. My fourteen-year old daughter picked up this book and couldn't put it down. Kids are drawn by Aaron's power and the believability of his character. As an adult, I was drawn by the fine writing. A powerful story!

A touching story for young adults
As an "aunt" and grandmother, I am often looking for books for young adults. Since I love to read, I enjoy reading the selections I make for my nieces and nephews and grandchildren. This book was a pleasure to read - it is a touching story that takes you inside a boy's head during a difficult time in his life, and looks at the world through his eyes. I felt like I was Aaron, the main character, throughout the book. I laughed with him, got sad with him, felt apprehensive with him and even felt triumph with him. I was taken back to my own childhood. I think all young adults would enjoy this book, male or female, and I highly recommend it.

Rock Art and Ruins for Beginners and Old Guys

Fantastic
With a sence of humor Mr. Scholl does a great job of educating others about rock art.

In an introduction chapter he discusses what rock art is and types of rock art. He discusses what rock art means and refers you to other well written books. He also provides lists of emergency equipment, camping equipment and more that you should consider taking as you begin looking at rock art.

In the next chapters he tells where to go to see rock art. He also instructs the reader about the expected behavior, tours to take, and more.

There are directions for taking pictures of rock art and explanations of clothes to wear, weather, and even a few recipes for crockpot cooking... so you can cook while you are looking and come home to a nice meal. Great!

This is a very exciting book. It made me want to jump out of my seat and go looking. The pictures are nice. His enthusiasm is catching and the format is easy to understand. Well worth the money.

Enjoy

Gary Reed, Paintings of Hawai'i

Beauty in the sense of the word.
His realism is superb in the classic sense. He is one of very few artists who can capture intricate detail with shade and color. His paintings are so true-to-life that it sometimes takes a second look to realize that they are actually a work of art, and not a photograph. His subject matter, often scenes of the Hawaiian Islands, holds great meaning for those of us who live here, and he's one of the very best interpreters of our state's beauty. This book gives Gary's fans a fuller appreciation of his art, and the work that goes into the paintings.

MISSING HAWAII
AS THE OWNER OF 20 OF GARY REED'S WORK. IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO RECIEVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK. I CAN'T DISCRIBE THE MEANING OF PEACE! BUT YOU FEEL IT LOOKING INTO HIS PAINTINGS.

A Walk Through The Islands
Flipping through Gary Reed's book is like taking a walk through the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Every painting captures the magical setting of the lush mountains, waterfalls and local landscapes. He takes you to places in his art that your own feet can't find. I have not seen an artist recreate the Hawaiian landscape as nature intended it to be better than Gary Reed. His book allows you to see the Old Hawaii, no skyscrapers, highways or hotels. Gary Reed's paintings are Hawaii.

Glorious Garden Flowers in Watercolor

Harrison-Tustain/ Best flowers I've ever seen
When I show a friend Susan's book they can hardly believe it is in watercolor. Her flowers, leaves and backgrounds are exceptionally vivid and robust. There are a few step-by-steps in it but not enough for a beginner. I hope her next book will have more steps to each picture. I feel confident we will see more from her - if she's willing. This has inspired me more than any other watercolor book. And, I liked almost all the pictures in it enough to try myself, which is alot more than I can say for any other watercolor book I've ever found! Enjoy!

Glorious Garden Folowers in Watercolour
I have always wanted to paint, specifically watercolours. I have have participated in classes but never really felt confident enough to move on. I purchased Susan Harrison-Tustain's book and was overwhelmed by the images I found within. Now I am working through the excercises and although previously my attempts were pretty rugged now they are not so rugged. I found the book so inspiring and easy to follow that my confidence has now improved greatly.

Glorious Feast for the Eyes for the Painter and Non-Painter
From the time I saw the first cover shot in a North Light flyer, I knew I MUST own this book! I have many floral watercolor books, but if I had to give them all up and keep only 1 -- this would be THE book. The breathtaking pictures (thanks to Susan) and the incredible color reproduction (thanks to North Light books) makes this book a feast for the eyes and the soul! The method of instruction that breaks down Susan's artistic process step-by-step make this book one of the most information-packed I've read. Susan is not stingy sharing her techniques-- but pictures this gorgeous are really only about 10% technique and 110% divine inspiration. Keep them coming, Susan! I too would love to see a video come out.

Pearls of Wisdom
Hank has compiled a life time of insight and wisdom into one book. The book uses a bulleted format to provide answers and insights into many of todays burning business issues. Some ideas you will be familiar with. Others you will quote often in your own communications. Hank has a provided a valuable resource for any business executive.

Manager's Must
Jack Welsh, while at GE, once said, "If the change on the outside is greater than change on the inside, the end is near." Hank Moore has written the Manager's lifeline in dealing with omnipresent, dynamic change. His book covers everything from strategy to the need for employee training. In each chapter, Mr. Moore gives the reader compelling reasons to take certain actions or attitudes in order to succeed in the difficult business world of today. And in most chapters, he offers simple-to-understand lists or snippets that make it easy to apply his concepts. His material on slogans, oxymorons, acronymns, and the proper usage of English and wording is extraordinary -- and much needed in business. His ideas on customers and advertising are tremendous. Mr. Moore is quite a visionary himself, a very successful consultant with five U.S. Presidents, and his extraordinary talents have led to an effective set of concepts captured in this book regarding vision, change, and success. He makes a strong case for taking action in those areas. Visionary thinkers are hard to find. Read the book, and become one! Every manager MUST read the book, own the book, and PRACTICE THE BOOK!!

The only prescription!
Science has learned, recently, that we cannot understand the nature of the entire being by breaking it down into sub atomic particles and removing it from the natural environment.

Thanks to Hank Moore, we now have a credible Big Picture Thinker who has the life saving prescription for business of all sizes in these most dynamic of times. Take a step back, look up and all around and with the conviction of Corporate Responsibility, take an ethical look at the entire Business Tree from the roots to the leaves. Then, define the ethical vision required for the long term growth and prosperity of the business. Only this process will gain and maintain the trust and confidence of the stakeholders.

Great Book on Waterhouse!
If you have any interest into the life and work of J.W.Waterhouse this is a fantastic book - the pictures are simply stunning and the author has an obvious love for the subject - I was very pleased with the book and would encourage anyone to purchase it. :)

Unsurpassed!
This book is a detailed chronicle of Waterhouse's life and many of his important works. The paintings are lavishly reproduced in large formats. It will satisfy the most demanding reader.

I loaned out this book from a library with the intention of scanning a few good pictures to learn from. I ended up marking up for scanning dozens of them that were too good to pass up. So I decide to purchase my own copy of the book instead.

If you are artistically oriented, this book will give you hours and hours of enjoyment, and if you spend time to read the text, which is well researched, well written and prodigiously informative, you will as soon become an authority of sorts on J. W. Waterhouse.

A book fullfills the art.
This has to be the best book yet on the works of Waterhouse. Its got historic facts and stories about his young life to a successful artist in Britain. The author goes in depth about concepts and theories of how Waterhouse think in terms of painting and storytelling. It also talks about the other Pre-Raphealists that lived at the same time as Waterhouse; their influence and relationship to him. What I love about the most is the high quality of the prints. The book is big in scale and the prints are marvelous in fullfilling the space.
If you like Waterhouse or Pre-Rapheal artworks this is one book that you won't want to miss.

Colorful, sketchy and loose style
In general there are very different styles of portraits or figure painting, from very photographically detailed and accurate to rough sketches. This book is about a kind of very rough watercolor figure sketches with strong and varied colors. The colors are exaggerated and more of expression than accurate "true" ones. Some like this style and some don't, for those who like it this book is a gem!

For me that like the more naturalistic figure it is still a source for inspiration even though I won't copy his style.
I can recommend the book, not as your first or only figure painting book, but as your second or third, it will spice up your collection.

As a side note, the book is printed with a paper/ink combination that smells so bad I have had to let it lie for a while before I can read it... That part of the impression of the book is not worth even one star :-)

excellent course in drawing people
This book begins with a couple exercises intended to improve your ability at drawing people with pencil. All of these are ones I've utilized before in college art classes. These are followed by several exercises intended to improve your ability at drawing people with watercolor. All exercises focus on quick drawings. His paintings often use exagerated colors, to simplify the reader's task of figuring out what is happening. Together, these exercizes (and a lot of practice) are bound to greatly improve your artistic ability.

Even if you prefer to do slow detailed paintings, the quick paced exercises are an invaluable tool to improve your ability to draw people.

Excellent place to start painting with watercolors...
I just recieved this book today. I read most of it as soon as I got it. And then I started painting right away. The directions are simple and easy to understand. And each lesson will give you satisfaction as you complete it. This book concentrates more on abstracts, shapes, and colors. If this is the style you are looking for this is a great place to start.

Looking for Fun??
This book has so many ideas for a craft person. The instructions are very easy and the rocks are fun to make. My 5 year old grandson found it easy too. He made a Lady Bug. This book is worth having if you are loooking for a project that doen't cost much money.

Great book! Easy for everyone!
I had been interested in Lin Wellford's books for a long time, but never really painted an animal rock. I bought this book, ready to try it. First I did a frog, which was very simple.
The furry animals use a script liner, and that is not my favorite paint brush, so I was a little nervous that I couldn't achieve the fur strokes.
I went ahead and tried a squirrel, and I was so surprised at how easy the fur turned out to be. I've painted a few more animals since then, and they are very easy to do. Very watery paint and a #1 script liner (the shorter one) makes it very easy.
If you are looking to start painting rocks, don't hesitate...this is the perfect book! I would recommend it to everyone who is interest in painting!

Another Treasure!
Another amazing book! Lin Wellford makes painting animals so easy. Everyone can make these adorable rock creatures. This book, Painting More Animals on Rocks, is the second 'animal on rocks' book. I really hope she comes out with more because these books are great!

Painting More animals on Rocks shows you how to make very cute mice, bears, wolves, wild cats, penguins, cows, and so much more. Your rock creatures nearly look real when you are finished painting them. I made some frogs for my flower garden, a few mice, and a penguin so far.

Even if you have never painted before, you can do these projects. The book has full color, nearly step by step photos with the step by step instructions. I just love it.

One lovely feature of this volume is that it shows the real material that inspired different faux finishes next to the excellent painted imitations. After extensive coverage of all aspects of getting started (tools and materials, preparation, safety concerns, and design and color considerations), and of working with glazes, there are dozens of detailed recipes for various marble and graining effects. The final chapter, "Professional Practice," explains how to set up your own decorative-painting business, including assembling a portfolio, identifying and reaching your market, financial planning, calculating rates and expenses, preparing samples, organizing the workspace, and working with clients. You'll even find a prototype contract and a checklist of supplies to bring on the job. Those who want to produce spectacular faux-finish results will learn a lot from Professional Painted Finishes.

Superb book - Knowledge of teaching & Painting -
Great book for all levels.
Ina and Allan Marx run a great faux finishing school that has spawned this great book. Complete
and through it a bible for novice to expert painters. Not only do they teach you the technique, but alos
how to "look and see" the item you are painting from nature. They are true professionals and
above all both are excellent teachers. I have taken their classes, and as there is no substituion for
taking one of their classes, this book is a great how to guide if you can't take one.
Excellent. Their knowledge of teaching and superb knowledge of faux painting marry in this books.

An essential for the serious artist.
I have a library full of books on painting techniques but this and the Finklestein book are the two that I consider "must haves." While most new books on decorative finishings repeat and repeat and repeat . . . the same pedestrian information on faux treatments, these give much more indept information on the techniques involved.

Very throurogh, great high quailty painted finishes
This is a wonderfully thorough book on creating the highest quality specialty painted finishes. It is advanced enough for the serious decorative painter while the instructions are detailed enough to allow the amateur or novice to try these techniques with outstanding results. The interior designer will also find it to be a valuable source book for fresh exciting design ideas.

Overall, the projects are more sophisticated and time-consuming than those in most books. A great deal attention is paid to tiniest details that make these finishes really stand out. The instructions are excellent, showing you how to create each finish step-by-step with a complete text description and demonstrative photos. Complete material and supply lists and recipes accompany each project.

The book starts out with the basics such as materials, safety, surface preparation and finishing coats. The glaze section is next with information on multi-layer glazing, novelty effects and techniques for glazing in small and large areas. There is great chart of problems and solutions and another on how tools affect glazing as well.

The simulation of marble and stone follows. Here the author talks about the formation and replication of stone before going on to the projects, which include fifteen marble and stone types such as malachite, granite, red levanto and French grand antique.

The section on graining is fantastic. It contains the most in-depth information on graining I have found anywhere. There is an analysis of patterns, a discussion of color, techniques for creating knots, troubleshooting section and color swatches of straight gained wood styles. There are over 20 wood types covered. Some include American oak, Brazilian rosewood, orientalwood, burl and birds-eye maple.

The final section of the book talks about setting up a professional practice. It contains financial planning, estimating, sample-making and much more. The appendix gives a great list of sources, lists English and metric equivalents and has a nice glossary of terms.
