a joy to look at
This book is a gem - it is full of Mrs. Martin's beautiful, colorful and inspiring paintings. She writes well and packs lots of instruction into the pages. Her setups are so unique that they make you want to try some on your own floor. I am an artist, and use mostly soft pastels but got alot of helpful information from this book. She blends realism with abstraction in a wonderful proportion. Her technique is worth copying. But above all, the beautiful artwork is inspiring - causing the artist to pick up tools and paint.

Stunning quality information illustrated to supreme levels
This book by Jean Martin is a thorough teaching manual backed up with magnificent illustrations of her paintings. Everything you need to know about watercolour painting including composition , expression , texture , light ,colour etc is dealt with in a lively exciting way. Glorious paintings demonstrate her points throughout the entire book. A must buy for the serious watercolourist as well as for beginners. It inspires!!

Warm and wonderful, Sal teaches self-acceptance
The author has created an endearing character who has real-life concerns of size and self-acceptance. The book is about sunflowers and families, but it is really a tool to help children appreciate their own unique abilities and perspectives. Sunflower Sal is an unpretentious child who loves her family, her life and the large sunflowers she plants yearly. She learns to love her size, as well. By accepting that some things come naturally to her, she gives up her struggle and "thinks big". Her contribution is heart warming, and very like Sal herself.

Assisted by her family, Sal finds her "gift" by thinking big
Sal is a big girl in search of her special talents. She admires her grandmother's quilting abilities and tries to quilt herself, but is dissatisfied with the results. With supportive encouragement from her family, Sal pursues her gift of planting sunflower seeds, and is beautifully rewarded at harvest time. A great book to promote positive self-esteem (especially in girls). Warm, lovely illustrations.

Beautiful, really captures the soul of each goddess
Susan Boulet's paintings capture the beauty & sprit of over 40 goddesses. Many images are mystical, magical and mysterious, while others have an almost haunting quality. I love the soft earthy colors she uses.

Each painting is in full color on glossy stock & contained to a single page. In a few cases several portraits are done of a single goddess. Alongside, on a separate page, sidebars tell what each goddess represents & her history.

Some of my favorites include the Bird Goddess & Bast, an Egyptian goddess with a female face & a cat's body. I also enjoyed the brief history of mythology & information on the artist herself contained in the forward.

I liked this book so much I bought an extra copy so I could cut out the artwork & use it to decorate my home. The setup is great for this, in most cases pictures are not back to back on the same page.

Beautiful Paintings
This beautiful collection of paintings by Susan Seddon Boulet consists of 44 depictions of different goddesses from mythology on the right, along with a description of the goddess on left. The goddesses are from all types of mythology, anywhere from Egyptian to medieval to Celtic, but they center around Greek and Roman goddesses. The medium is a combination of pastels, pencil, and ink. Susan Seddon Boulet's use of transparency and color is especially impressive. The paintings are very wispy and dream-like. If you are interested in mythology you will love this book. If you are unfamilliar with mythology, this is a great way to learn.

We love this book!
My five year old and I read this book at least twice a month, and we love it. I love that it teaches a valuable precept for living, and I love the rhyming and pictures. And my son hardly ever rejects a suggestion to read this book; what more can I say? Altogether wonderful! Thank you, Melody and Steve. I'm going to order The Other Brother now.

Kids will love this!
This book is an excellent way to teach preschoolers about the parable of the two houses. The story is told in rhyme which keeps their attention and the pictures are a wonderful complement to the story. They will want to read it over and over!

The Tall Ship in Art
This is the greatest book I ever found about ancient ship painting. It took me such a long time to find this kind of wonderful book. It is a must buy for a marine painting lover or artist

A superb portrait of the classic age of sail
The clarity and color of the reproductions of marine paintings in this book are nothing less than superb. While the individual styles and, to some extent, the specific subject matter of the five artists vary, I find it impossible to single out any one of them as being "better" than the others. Each is a highly talented artist who brings the past to life in a most convincing manner. While men-of-war are probably the most frequent subject of the paintings in this book, merchant vessels and ships of exploration and even of pleasure are not neglected. It is pure joy to just leaf through this volume and gaze at the wealth of images. Anyone who is fascinated by the sea and sailing ships cannot fail to be enchanted by this book.

My No. 1 Choice So Far
Temples of Gold: Seven Centuries of Thai Buddhist Paintings
by Sankti Leksukhum, et al is the first and (so far) only book dealing with South-East Asian culture to deserve my 5 star rating. The commentary is well-researched, easily read and flows hand-in-hand with the breathtaking reproductions of Thai narrative murals of the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and later Rattanakosin periods. The publisher, George Brazillier, should also be commended on the splendid and meticulous execution and quality of the printing and the excellent choice of format, which make these amazing masterpieces of Thai art spring-up at the reader right from the printed page. Need I say more? If you like the subject matter - definitely go and buy this book.

A Feast for the Eyes
Temples of Gold: Seven Centuries of Thai Buddhist Paintings by Sankti Leksukhum, et al, is both a serious and entertaining essay which gives one the feeling of actually "being there". A must for the serious admirer of South-east Asian art and culture!

AN UNSURPASSED ILLUSTRATION OF THE SOUL
This book is incredible. One of the most incredible things about it is it was not originally a book, but a series of close to 100 large wall paintings (full colour! )designed to decorate the walls of the medical school in Lhasa. The painting were copied several times and the copies became disseminated among neighbouring countries and so have survived the burning and looting that has taken place in Tibet. The book is a record of an art gallery of medical illustrations which detail every aspect of the traditional medicine of that time. They do this with a beauty which must be seen to be believed and with a sensitivity which captures the soul of medicine. The work was done as a votive offering by monks working in the sixteenth century. What a beautiful gift they left us!

Great Illustrations
Well SOme weeks ago I purchased a Tibetian Painting while I was in Nepal and was introduced to purchased this book and found the excact painting was in it I was shocked. The book explains in great details every stroke and every medicine plant and items painted on my tanka more meaningful.

Highly regarded book if you are into Tibetian Medicinal paintings.

TIBETAN THANGKA PAINTG

Author: David Jackson
Amazon base price: $32.50

Must have!
This book is a must have for anyone interested in ancient Tibetan art and culture. It penetrates deep in to the tradition and lore involved in the creation of Thangkas.
It's even great on a technical level, giving us grids and proportion when painting Buddhas. The authors even explains how to create the pigments with authentic materials; as well as telling us where in the world to find them.

Indispensible resource.

The Ultimate ¿How to¿ book of Thangka Painting
This book assumes an interest in Thangka paintings. The book then proceeds to elaborate, step by step and in great detail, the process of creating one of these art works from the grinding of the color pigments to the finishing details with a brocade frame. If you are interested in this art form you couldn't ask for a better guide. Well written and thoroughly complete, it also includes drawings of any and every detail found in these paintings. If you are interested in creating a Thangka painting of your own this is the book for you.

Captures the essence of The Jersey Shore
Our family has the fortune of having Frank Finale as a teacher to both our children.

He has done a wonderful job capturing the Jersey Shore for all of its charms and the many artists who live here.

Everyone who visits the Jersey Shore will want this book
First, the editors of To the Shore Once should be congratulated. They chose 101 drawings, etchings, and paintings from local New Jersey and some national artists. These works of Art complement Mr. Frank Finale's writing in essays, prose and poetry. You, turn the page and you feel like you are at the beach in Spring Lake, Belmar or Manasquan. Even the carrousel of 1950s Asbury Park is represented. As I think of Frank O'Hara's book on Jackson Pollock, To The Shore Once More will become a classic coffee table book for years to come. Art and prose and poetry, what a nice mix. We have Mr. Frank Finale to thank for such a beautiful book this Summer
