Nursing The Finest Art: An Illustrated History

The perfect gift for a nurse
This book is a great gift idea for all nurses. I bought one during my senior year of nursing school to help with a take-home exam. Not only did it help with the exam, but it was actually very interesting to read. The format of the book is nice because it has a timeline, and is organized by major historical events in nursing. Even if you don't like reading about history, the pictures tell a story themselves. It is a great coffee table book to have just to flip through and enjoy the beautiful artwork and pictures of nurses from past to present.

Every nurse should own this book
This book is a treasure for the profession of nursing. I saw the first edition of this book while a nursing student in the author's nursing history course. Dr. Donahoe performed extensive research in writing this book. It is a moving account of those things that drew me to the profession of nursing and a thorough education for those unaware of nursing's history. The artwork is phenomenal and shows how nurses have been captured in art throughout history as well.

Offray Glorious Weddings: Traditions, Inspirations and Handmade Ribbon Treasures
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publishing (March, 2002)
Author: Ellie Joos
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $1.75
Buy one from zShops for: $1.74
Ribbons and wedding accessories are a natural pairing, and ribbon doyen Ellie Joos knows how to wrest spectacular flowers and bows out of a few yards of the stuff. Yet despite the elaborate appearance of her creations, she manages to keep the how-tos clear and (mostly) fairly easy, especially with the frequent use of premade craft-store flowers. She offers a nice selection of headpieces, garters, shoe and glove decorations, purses, keepsake boxes, centerpieces, pew bows, boutonnieres, corsages, wreaths, and favors, plus less common items like adornments for the cake server and champagne glasses, a lacy parasol, a unity candle, even a beautifully decorated rustic broom to celebrate the African American tradition of "jumping the broom." Most of the projects can be handled by the novice crafter, although some may take a fair amount of time and many will be a bit pricey--all that beautiful ribbon doesn't come cheap. Still, it's less expensive to make the items yourself than to buy them ready-made; plus, you can easily tailor them to suit your taste and color scheme. Woven throughout the more than 50 step-by-step instructions and pretty color photos are tidbits of wedding lore and charming engravings of Victorian weddings, as well as a brief wedding planner. A solid general techniques section details bow making, ribbon weaving, pinwheel folding, and some basic flower making. --Amy Handy

i watched a show on tlc using this book, and loved the ideas, and I was no less impressed when i received it from amazon. i found a great used copy. the ideas, the directions.. it's a super book!

This book was very helpful and creative for a wedding.
My mom purchased this book and we used it to help in the ribbon work for my cousin's wedding and my brother's wedding. It was really helpful and had alot of ideas that were different from the everyday things as well as the traditions and such. So I recommend this book to the people who enjoy doing ribbon work and want to make ribbons a part of their wedding in a unique way.

I wish I had read this book years ago!
For the first time I have found a book that explains EXACTLY the how & why of the various oil painting materials. Gone is the confusion, and in came the confidence to actually move beyond the first awkward steps. A fabulous book!

Highly recommended for the serious beginner
This is a terrific little book, clearly and concisely written. What I particularly liked was the descriptions of the various paint brushes, pictorial examples of the brush strokes and effects they can produce, when you would use them, and a recommended starter set. A very thorough table of contents: Introduction, Oil Painting Brushes, Care and Cleaning of Brushes, Palette and Painting Knives, Other Tools Used for Paint Application and Manipulation, Oil Paints, Oils and Mediums, Waxes, Thinners/Solvents, Varnishes, Hazards, Surfaces, Paletter, Drawing Materials, Easels, Miscellaneous Equipment, Picture Cleaning and Cleaners, Closing Thoughts.

The best practical painting book.
I have purchased many oil painting books which unfortunately are long on theory but short on sound practical advice. Charles Sovek's book guides the beginner through many structured projects in which the essential building blocks of good painting technique are mastered. No book I have come across offers this instruction in such a clear concise manner. Living in a country which offers few oil painting courses, this book more than makes up for the lack of live classes. I highly recommend this book to budding oil painters.

probably the best book on this subject out there
i ve learnt an approach to painting which is practical and has caused great improvement. if the exercises are followed as laid out in the book there is a lot to be gaine

a masterpiece of multimedia art
Louis IX, a king of thirteenth-century France, probably created this book. Originally the book contained no text. Subsequently over time it acquired text in Latin, Persian, and Judeo-Persian. This book is an unique artifact of historically and culturally situated sense of Hebrew scripture. I discuss this book in detail in Section III of "Sense in Communication," available at www.galbithink.org Pondering this book has been for me a valuable source of insight into the evolution of communications industry.

Amazing reference material for medieval re-creators
Amazing!
Old Testament Miniatures, or, The Maciejowski Bible, as it is known, is a phenomenal resource for armour and garb reference in the 13th century. But it has so much more too! Period illustrations of foot wear, siege weaponry, feasts and even underwear!

Well worth the price you pay. The plates are a large size (this is an Oversized Book) which allows a decent level of observable detail. The only downside is the book's gold inking from the plates seemed to be slightly damaged by the facing page. Not enough for me to send it back, but worth noting for those a bit pickier than myself.

Overall, a five start rating!

A must have resource on Oregon artists
This book sets the standard for reference works on regional artists. Anyone interested in art of the period will enjoy it immensely. There are articles that help define the art movements of the day and wonderful information on over 500 artists - many of them can only be found here. I use this book as a tool in collecting, and any serious collector should not be without it. Have one in your home, your office, and your car (for those finds at estate sales). With this book Oregon artists have come into their own. In addition it is a beautiful book just to browse.

Oregon's Rich History of Art
Oregon Painters: The First Hundred Years is the definitive book on the history of art in Oregon. Ginny Allen and Josie Klevit have written a resource book that goes beyond the genre. It sets a new standard to which all future books on this subject will be held to. As useful as any dictionary for looking up general information it also entertains the reader with biographies of the painters that run from brief and factual to lengthy and colorful. A generous selection of color plates makes this book a feast for the eyes as well. This book belongs in the librarey of gallery owners, art collectors, historians and anybody with the slightest interest in the Pacific Northwest or art in general.

Great Intoduction to Art for Children
Sometimes it seems as if there is never enough time for enrichment activities at school like art. I checked this book out from my local library hoping to find some inspiration for making some new art projects and later purchased it for my classroom. Since my elementary classroom has students with very disparate levels of English language ability, I needed a book that was written clearly enough to not discourage my ESL (English as a Second Language) students and yet not so simple that my more advanced English speakers would think of it as a "baby book."

This book was exactly what I needed with clear concise language and an abundance of beautiful color paintings and illustrations. There were also "look closer" sections for each topic, which gave useful prompts and questions to encourage further exploration by students. Suggested activities were also tremendously useful in translating learning about art into projects that my students could enjoy. Difficult words were also printed in bold so as to make vocabulary review easier for students. We ended up making a Van Gogh "The Starry Night" project and learned about foreground and background as well as color and light. The children loved it and that says a lot for often-difficult-to-please sixth graders.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to art for third through sixth graders.

Great for Mommy Summer Camp!
This book is easy to use and is very informative. It provides simple, yet insightful guidelines for looking at a variety of works. It also provides some creative activities to further the learning process. We have tried most of the suggested activities and found them to be both fun and challenging with fine results from within the suggested age range. An excellent investment for both rainy days and summer fun.

A wonderful addition to the Mary Engelbreit book collection.
This is a typical Mary Engelbreit book with lavish pictures and a "vintagey", comfortable look. Where some of her books are more for ideas than how-to's, this one is not. While you will most definitely find much inspiration in these pages, it also includes shopping lists and detailed instructions for recreating these looks in your home. There are many painting techniques described, including striping, sponging, glazing, and a few more!

MB at her best....
Great book with looks of interesing ideas and techniques. Sumptuous pictures which are a feast for your eyes. Lots of excellent ideas...well worth it! You'll enjoy.

I absolutely adore this book and found a lot to use in it.
Ok, so chances are, you aren't going to be able to paint like John Singer Sergent just by reading this book. However, it is really interesting to read about Sergent's techniques and see the author do a painting in the style of Sergent.

Turner, Cotman, and other masters of the watercolor medium are demonstrated as well. This is a beautifully printed book with lots in it for anyone who loves watercolors. You can develop your own technique by studying the masters; this is a time-honored tradition (you can still see people today in the Louvre, copying the works of the masters as an art exercise.)

This is one of my favorite watercolor books. It's enjoyable just to read and look at the way the author tries to replicate an artist's method of painting, and the examples give you ideas of subjects you can try yourself (for example, a cherry tree by a barn, your kids at the beach, your garden.)

A beautiful, one-of-a-kind guide to watercolor painting
I have purchased or flipped through dozens of books on watercolor painting, but this one is unique in many respects. First, the instruction level is clear, and easy to understand with beautiful step-by-step illustrations. Next, it is unique in that each demonstration is based upon the work of a famous watercolor painter or painting. For example, there is instruction on painting poppies, inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. Another demonstrates how to paint a cherry tree using the methods of John Singer Sargent. Each demonstration is preceded by a color photograph of a scene resembling the painting that you are going to make. I would recommend this book for beginners as well as for more advanced artists. No matter how many other painting books you have, make room for this one!
