This is a charming exercise in autobiography (one of several) by the great author-illustrator Tomie dePaola. "Tommy" is consumed with a passion for drawing. Although encouraged by his family, who treat his pictures with respect and decorate their houses and workplaces with them, he encounters misunderstanding and frustration at school. Finally, an art teacher gives him a chance to do his own thing. The Art Lesson is filled with many full-page illustrations in dePaola's inimitably warm, soothing style. It's also packed with the right lessons on individuality and perseverance, especially for children who are already showing a single-minded interest or special talents that put them ahead of their peers. Good Book by a Favorite Author
This is an encouraging autobiographical tale. Tommy was sure he would grow up to be an artist. He is discouraged by people in his life at times but fortunately Tommy prevails. Thank goodness; we now have an excellent children's author/illustrator to enjoy!

The Art Lesson
When Tommy wants to become an artist, he trys everything he can to be the best artist. When Tommy's older brother goes to school and has art class Tommy can't wait till he gets art lessons.
Tommy really wants to draw, and that is what he spends most of his time doing. When Tommy finally gets to go to art lessons, he wants to draw what he wants, not what the teacher tells him. So the teacher tell him once he draws what she wants him to he can draw anything he wants, and he sure did.
I think that it is really great that Tommy never gave up drawing and it followed him through his whole life, and he is still doing it today. I would recommend this book for children ages 4-8, and I think that it would show kids to do what they want to and never give up.

The Art Lesson-- by: Tomie dePaola
I really enjoyed this book. It tells a true story about the author, Tomie dePaola's personal experiences with teachers in his early years of art. My favorite character in this book is Tommy. I love the ending that shows that Tommy's art passion has followed him throughout his whole life, to when he is a grown man. I would recommend this book to any one of any age that is looking for something to read.

If you only invest in 1 book to learn about art, this is it.
This book is a great introduction or review for adults or teens. Using famous works of art, in color sure beats the first art appreciation book I read in college which had drawings and black and white grainy photos. Even with a degree in art history, I found this book a great refresher.

this is a terrific book
This is both fun and informative. Though the language may be pitched at a relatively easy level, there is nothing condescending about it. It is deeply informed, and even the professor will learn from it. Buy it without hesitation if you wish to learn about great paintings.

Book For All Ages and A Great Author
I am only 13 years old and I have this book and I thought it was great. It really did explain art. I saw things that I actually wouldn't notice if I was explaining the picture. It was an interesting book and I enjoyed looking at it. It made me understand the pictures and made art funner and more interestig than it used to be. It was very interesting and I hope you buy this book.

Bouguereau

Color reproductions are excellent
You wouldn't be ordering this book if you didn't already love Bouguereau, so rest assured that the reproductions are top notch, especially for a fairly inexpensive paperback.

Art Book of the Century (and last two as well)
This is a lankmark book about the greatest painter of all time. Whereas it is easy to do write a book on over-hyped painters (such as Cezanne or Picasso) simply by rehashing other books, Wissman has written the first complete book of a great painter we almost know nothing about (except now).

This book contains large format pictures and an easy-to-read and informative biography. Highly recommended

A superbly presented collection of artwork
Bouguereau by museum art exhibition curator and art history expert Fronia E. Wissman is a superbly presented collection of artwork underscored with thoughtful commentary showcasing one of the most simultaneously beloved and hated nineteenth-century French artists, Adolphe-William Bouguereau. His realistic, classic paintings of nude bathers, nymphs, young women and figures of mythology have a captivating, attention-calling quality that turns the head and the eye. His images are here displayed in full color photographs and the informative text recounts his life and enhances our understanding of the background to his masterpieces in this engaging and very highly recommended addition to personal and academic Art History Reference collections.

I can finally paint!
I always wanted to be an artist, and with Donna's easy-to-follow techniques, I can now paint! Before, I drew rotten stick figures, but Donna had me painting like a pro in nothing flat! I have given items away as gifts, and have had requests for items! I've been concentrating on clay flower pots, but I now feel ready to branch out to bigger and better things! Thanks Donna!

Buy It! You'll thank me later! :)
One Stroke Painting is the way to go! This book is a must have!

Beautiful
I am in the process of making and decorating my first birdhouse from this book. I chose the Mercantile.I have just barely started by I am already enjoying it immensely.

This is a beautifully done book.
I received this book as a gift because I love birdhouses and I am always talking about trying to build some of my own. When I would see a really cute birdhouse I always say "I could build this" so my friend got tired of me saying this and gave me this book, and said now you can build as many as you want. Thanks for a really good birdhouse book, I love it. Housewife in Iowa

Beautiful Birdhouses
I purchased 3 of these books, one for myself, one for my daughter and one for my daughter-in-law. Everytime I would see beautiful birdhouses like these, I would think,I would love to try and make them, now I can. The directions are so well done it seems impossible to make a mistake. The church will be my first project. Thanks again.

Breathtaking
The more crowded life gets the more I love to look at these beautiful pictures. Genuine grace at its best. It is one of my most favorite coffee table books. If you love the sea you must have this book.

The Undersea World of Wyland
This is absolutely a "MUST HAVE" book! The dust jacket alone is beautiful, but just wait until you see the artwork inside! "Breathtaking!" Wyland fans, you're really missing out if this book's not in your collection.

Beautiful artwork, thoughful quote, intesting info on artist
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves dolphins, whales and other sea life. It has lots of beautiful artwork with thoughtful quotes beneath. There is also some interesting information on Wyland.

First, there is a section on whales, followed by one on dolphins, manatees and other sea life. Next, there are several collaboration pieces. Wyland worked with artists such as Jim Warren & James Coleman to create many stunning pieces.

I especially liked one with babies & dolphins he worked on with Janet Stewart. I also loved the section on the whaling wall murals. The walls are shown both in-progress & finished.

I found the information on each wall and about how the walls came to be fascinating. A detailed list on of all the walls & their specifications as well as a list of all the Wyland galleries are a nice bonuses.

Hilary Page's Guide to Watercolor Paints

very good for the artist to save money
As I am interested in the scientific end of things when studying color, I bought this book with a view to study what the author had to say about it. Being the medium is watercolor, a paste ready for painting with a brush mixed with water, the colors are indeed going to be different from that of other mediums. The author has done a tremendous job by detailing the different brands and rating them in terms of their lightfastness, whether they "stain" (have staying power for color in a painting) or not. I would term this book the "Consumer's Report of Watercolor Colors". So often, most books on color theory concentrate on one aspect of color, such as graphics on film or web graphics, and forget that different mediums mix color differently. For instance, someone involved with oil painting would need a different book on mixing color, as that is a different medium altogether. Also, there is no standardization of color among the various manufacturers of paints, and it makes it very difficult for the artist to know just what to buy. "Amber green" from one manufacturer could be very different from an "amber green" from another manufacturer, and vice versa, the same color could have different names from different manufacturers. The reason I am not giving it five stars, is that this point about color standardization is driven home better by an John Wilcox, another author on color and watercolor. Otherwise, this is a very good book for the discerning watercolorist.

Compares with M Wilcox book
Helpful, providing definitive information on the behavior of the paint, accurate color photos, and information in disagreement with Wilcox's book--i.e. the color Opera by Holbien as a "permanent" color. (Color rec. by E. John Robinson). Useful when picking between different manufacturers, especially with online shopping.

Excellent investment for watercolorists
This book is great! It explains everything you want to know about the nature and behavior of pigments. Hilary does a superb job of rating the quality of each paint manufacturer's products. Her information is accurate and very useful. I now understand a great deal more about the paints I'm using. After buying this book I changed my pallet to single pigment paints and no longer mix mud. I no longer waste money on dissapointing tubes of color.
Of all the books on watercolor I've read and own, this one has become my bible!

Projection Stenciling

Stencil artists extraordinaire Linda Buckingham and Leslie Bird have hit upon a truly brilliant approach to their subject that enables even novices to create high-quality, large-scale designs. Their method entails covering the paintable surface with freezer paper (adhered with stencil spray adhesive), projecting the image onto the paper using an overhead or slide projector, and tracing the design onto the paper. Each design element is then color-coded and cut out one color at a time. In effect, the usually complex process of producing wall murals is reduced to the simplicity of a paint-by-number scheme. The 40 step-by-step projects include materials lists, color codes, color photos of the finished work, and complete gridded patterns of each design, so even if you don't have access to any of the various projectors adaptable to this process (though they can be rented for surprisingly little), you can still follow the technique using the old-fashioned grid-transfer method.

Not only is Buckingham and Bird's approach ingenious, but their designs are stunning, and greatly varied in style. They fill walls with schools of tropical fish, a soaring Pegasus, peaceful landscapes, an airborne snowboarder, the cow jumping over the moon, a dozing tiger. Doors sport faux wood inlay, a gliding ocean liner, desert scenes. Glass can be "etched" with elegant stencil designs. Floorcloths feature cobblestones or swirling art nouveau designs. Every room in the house is fair game to these two, and not only in the house: one of the authors lives aboard a boat crammed with stenciled surfaces. This volume is both a marvelous source of inspiration and a practical, beautifully produced how-to guide. --Amy Handy

OK If You Are Looking For Projects
I was disappointed in this volume, only because it contained very little instruction, but instead demonstrated the techniques through projects. If you want a grand and slightly garish display of zebras or dolphins on your walls, this is the book for you. If you are trying to learn how to enlarge something and create stencils from it, you can probably find more information elsewhere.

Great ideas
I had never thought of stenciling in this way. I have made my own stencils in the past using acetate or paper, but I never thought of making whole scenes in this way. I probably won't create any of her particular projects, but by the instructions she gives for doing them, I am able to use the same techniques for my ideas. It really opened my eyes to a new way of doing things.

An innovative approach to stencilling
This book widened my perception of stenciling. Previously I thought of stencilingf as a neat, precise, predictable repeated pattern. A craft to add embellishment to a piece of furniture or a border around a room. When I first flipped through the pages of this book it was hard to believe I was looking at stenciling. If this process at first looks difficult, don't be fooled. Clear step-by-step instructions walk you through the process. I found once I had done a few projects from the book I was ready to produce my own original artwork. This book is a nice addition to the library of any decorative painter and a must for the wannabe artist.

Not so easy
Despite the aesthetic pleasure one might derive from perusing this book's pages in a bookstore, hoping that this is their key to gorgeous watercolor paintings, this book is not what it claims to be - "easy watercolor." It's definitely more along the lines of "intermediate - or more likely professional - watercolor." Though Moses shares a good deal of her ideas and techniques, the book does not go so far as to answer the challenge of how get to the point of having a painting worthy or even remotely necessary of these techniques. Her how-tos jump, not range from, a ridiculously simple watermelon slice to a street scene in France. This is, all the while, assuming you already know how to draw professionally, seeing as how you've jumped from a slice of watermelon to a deluxe French street. Tutorials will jump from a simple wash of one color to a deluxe painting with loads of colors and intricate details, none of which have been explained or shown in between the process.

The author's own paintings are quite far from captivating; a great deal of things are out of proportion and unintentionally unappealing. Her only two paintings of humans, for instance - one of a little boy, and one of her father - share the exact same pose and the exact same disproportions.

There are, however, helpful value scales, examples of washes, gradations, and principles, if only for the more advanced artist. Which brings me back to my original point - this book is not _easy_ watercolor, and I doubt many beginners that aren't highly skilled aritsts already will find it the right step between knowing nothing and knowing it all.

Outstanding!
This is one of the better books of it's kind that I have found.

Ms. Moses doesn't try to snow people into a false sense of I know it all and you don't.

The instruction is easy to follow and very detailed.

One is benefited greatly and can be helped in the development of their own style.

This is a dream to read because Ms. Moses goes out of her way not to talk over your head.

I have read it from cover to cover and still am learning.

Art is a passion which has beginnings and this has been a great start for me.

Inspiring!
"Easy Watercolor" was truly inspiring. It contains a wealth of experience set out in an easy to follow format. Not only does it include all the basics but it teaches many great techniques. The content gave me confidence and the artwork gave me inspiration.

The Best
This collection of body paintings reveal incredible skill, and also lots of luscious ideas and provacative thoughts whether or not you have any special interest in Body Painting. Each model has been painted in unique ways which reflect the depth and richness of talent of each artist who painted them. Some take a whimsical approach, and others move in the world of political statements, and then there are those who really move off of this plain of existence into imaginary worlds of the spirit and the soul. This is book not only for body painters and make-up artists, the work here is for all of those interest in contemporary visual art, dance, costume, image, and more. In time, this art form will stand alone as a truly "new" form of cultural sculpture.

A must for the bodypainting lover
Painted Bodies is not a book to read in, but to look at. It includes a wonderful collection of 45 different artists, showing their own interpretation on the subject. The manner Roberto Edwards photographed them is the best compliment a body painter can expect. Above all, the marvellous layout makes the fantastic finishing touch to this great book. Absolutely recommended!

Beautiful
