Color Secrets for Glowing Oil Paintings

Higher levels of artistic knowledge
Dougs last entry page says it all and you do not want him to end now you want to learn more.
In Dougs writting he is trying to 'teach' the 'reader' to 'think' like an artist. Doug has not only explained the methods and materials easily but has gone beyond the basics. He has shared his 'insights' and 'knowledge' through his life learning journey as an Artist as though you were with him in person.
Reading through the first 34 pages of his book with active mental imagery has been an inner eye ephany that I have never gotten from any other; Art book or magazine, various selective workshops or art classes, color theory course studies, or even through my Associates degree program in Advertising Art and Design.
I came to this Web Site to see if he has written any other books or recently, but this site shows none. I will certainly try and follow any future Artistic publications by "Douglas Purdon".
And I sincerely look forward to working through his 'basic demonstrations' to comprehend even more 'in depth' with my own 'hands on experiences' with his 'reflected insights' and detailed step by step guides. This is a treasured Art Book that I know I will always remember I have on the shelf as the years go by. (And I do have numerous)
This book is comprehensive and clarifying a blessing for any frustrated Artist who wants to design and create, and to know 'HOW' and 'WHY' and understand with simplicity.

Talented artist
Doug Purdon is a very talented artist. His paintings look like photographs. He is a landscape painter. In this book he demonstrates alot of rock formations and scenes with water. He's very detailed in his explanations and even tells you what colors he mixed. One page in the book, he goes over all the things you should check for in your painting, which I will really use alot.

I think he used too many rock formations as examples, but this is a good book regardless. He paints incredible skies. You will definately want to try alkyds after you see his water effects. Now, I just wish he had a video.

color your own Matisse
This book is great! I've used it with first - third graders in class. It helps them become familiar with the artists work, and they also enjoy using it for tracing.

color your own Matisse
This book is great! I have used it with children in my classroom (ages 6-9 years). It gives them exposure to the work of Matisse, while the coloring part also allows them to find the details. It is also great to use as a tracing tool, or for patterning.

As long as we communicate there is chance for all of us
Dear Reader: Firstly, I thank you for taking a time to read my story and enjoy with my paintings. Without you or better say without hopping to meet you the book would be never published. Secondly, without receiving any favor or a discount from Amazom.com I would like to thanks them to gratefully listed my book on their site and support that it has provided to fulfill all required forms. A life-long events of anyone is a reason to write a book about. It is maybe pity but another, much more significant indict needed for encouragement to write a book. It can be anything a murder, a bank rubbery, a great adventure and just about anything what might stir our feelings. In my case it was my divorce. It forced me to turn on computer to record what I felt insensitive and hard to appreciate actions of my ex-wife and as well the juridical system of United State. After a short time a computer became my friend and confidant. At that time I wrote for myself and had no plan for publication. During my life I learn no other means to relief my anger and frustration but painting it out before and now to write. The communication with my computer helped to save my sanity. For good or bad but during four-years long divorce I got accustom to write and when in 1977 I reached the settlement my writing marked 2000 pages. Also I learned to value a positive effort regardless of its creator and would feel a crime to through my own work into a garbage I decided to organize all written stories and in some cases very sketchy into a trilogy -- The Fool. In 1998 the first book "Born under the Black Sun" was submitted to a publisher and though found very interesting the problem with marketing chilled the enthusiasm. I rejected a notion that the book should be market only among newcomers from Russia. The trilogy was not written about emigrant and for emigrant. The trilogy explores a male-female relationship, thoughts about government and governing, philosophical essay of a human nature, justice, love, hate, human tragedy and drama. After some thinking I decided to create an art-book. A book which should be of interest to anyone and had no nationalistic boarders. That way The Colors of Truth was born.

Unique, engaging, biographically oriented reading.
In 1977, Vladimir Shvartsman emigrated from Russia to America. The Colors Of Truth: A Journey from Russia to America is a compelling collection of his artwork. Each of the 49 paintings is accompanied by an informative text relating the conditions surrounding (and sometimes inspiring) the work. Shavartsman also provides a brief and engaging biography of himself, including a painful divorce, all of which impacted on his art in one way or another. There are occasions in the text where it becomes obvious that English is a second language, but that only serves to underscore the authenticity and candor of this unique, engaging, biographically oriented collection of an artist's work and vision under trying and difficult circumstances.

Educational. Look at Art with Children
This is a good book for adults and children. There is a picture on one page and on the next page there is a little bit of information about the picture and some questions to inspire thinking about the picture.

Examples of questions might be- what are the childrenn in this painting feeling? What makes you think so? What is the father in this painting thinking about?

This book inspires young children to look at pictures in a different way. It inspires them to put the story to the painting and to explore what the painting is trying to 'say'. Because of this it is a good introduction to art for young children.

Enjoy.

A new way of looking at picture books
We just started "looking" at Ms Blizzard's book, and it has already opened a whole new world for my children to discover. The format (full page color pictures accompanied by historical reference and discussion questions) is as enjoyable for the children as it is for adults. As a homeschool mother I appreciate the opportunity it provides to take a moment and wonder what the artist may have had in mind when they created their work. I also thank the author for the corresponding list of open ended discussion questions she provides. Take a moment to really look at a picture and let the child interpret it. You may be surprized at how they respond. I know I was. It has become especially popular with my 3 year old who considers the children her friends. We look at it daily and can't wait to add to our collection with another edition of the authors works. A wonderful introduction to art appreciation for all ages. Thank you Ms. Blizzard for a wonderful book! This series is sure to be a hit with all who appreciate art.

absolutely excellent
i just had to take the time to write this review to let people know how wonderful this book is. If you don't believe in yelling at or hitting your children, but you can't figure out what else to do, this is the book for you. I have a 4 year old and have been following this book's advice for about 6 months and it works every time. it worked right from the beginning. It made sense to me and fit my style of wanting to "teach" my daughter rather than scold and threaten. It gives you examples and step by step instructiions. It is not a book that you can just "flip through" to get answers to your questions. You have to "read" it all the way through because one section links to the other. But it reads easily and quickly like you are talking to someone who understands. You can read it in a day or two. My copy is highlighted and dog-eared all the way through. I can't say enough about this book. My daughter and I are BOTH happier and better "behaved". I hope the authors have written other books on the next age group and adolescents.

An expertly written "how to" manual
Collaboratively written by parenting experts Bridget A. Barnes and Steven M. York, Common Sense Parenting Of Toddlers And Preschoolers is a very practical and "parent friendly" guide to the raising young children. From setting reasonable expectations for young children; to teaching social skills and self-control; to turning daily and weekly routines into family traditions, to handling very practical issues such as toilet training, bedtime, and meals, Common Sense Parenting Of Toddlers And Preschoolers is an expertly written "how to" manual which is very highly recommended for parents and caretakers of children ages 2 through 5.

Rose Szarowicz
A wonderful book that shows incredable artistic talent. Perfect for anyone wanting to learn to paint with oil colours, or to imporove their technique. It also shares a huge amount of information on lighting techniques, best materials to use, equipment and how your studio should look! Uses examples of historical artists work and modern talent to make his point. A well designed and planned book, the best book I've seen on the subject- and a great resource.
Come and see us soon Brian, we miss you and Kim!

An Excellent Reference
This book shines among my collection of around 25 books on oil painting technique collected over the past few years during an intense period of self-teaching. I wish I had found Mr. Gorst's book sooner, because of the book's comparitively superior organization and its excellent and carefully chosen technical descriptions with many detailed photos. Included are concise but thorough descriptions and photos of diverse oil painting materials and techniques with insights into the whys and hows of various combinations depending on your desired final effect. Any admirer of the Masters will appreciate Mr Gorst's correlations between his descriptions of various painting techniques and his references to well-known artists who historically used such techniques masterfully. Rarely have I seen an almost side-by-side comparison of multiple, diverse painting processes, from delicate glazing through bold impasto, and the various and subtle combinations possible between. The writings are articulate, clear and concise, and I'm a tough editor. I think this book could be an excellent technical reference for an established artist (which I am not), and the book would be particularly useful to anyone who is still struggling to find his or her preferred technique through experimentation with the diverse materials and style options available.

Appealing and Authoritative Book about Japanese Print Master
Steeped in traditional Japanese culture and trained early in Western art techniques, Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) combined these two sensibilities to revive and renew the ancient art of Japanese woodblock printing on the verge of its disappearance as Japan embraced modernization at the beginning of the 20th century. This book is a comprehensive introduction for those new to Yoshida's work, and a valuable aid to the sophisticated print collector. Excellent color reproductions of 259 woodblock prints plus 20 works in other media shine in a generous and uncluttered format that encourages leisurely enjoyment of each masterpiece. The cosmopolitan Yoshida recorded his travels in India, China, Korea and the United States in his art. A passionate mountaineer, Yoshida translated sketches from his climbing expeditions into stunning prints, in such series as "Twelve Scenes in the Japan Alps." He also captured scenes of Japan's disappearing traditional life in evocative prints such as "Honest Grocery", "A Small Restaurant at Night" and "Farmhouse." In perhaps his greatest works, Yoshida combines his skill in rendering both the monumental and the domestic to show that human existence is at once small and precious. He uses vast mountain landscapes as backdrops for intimate groups of climbers gathered around evening fires or sheltered in tents or caves as they sing and tell stories. Text and captions are in both English and Japanese. Inclusions of full margins on each print reproduction permits study of Japanese and English titles, signatures, dates and seals. A chronological survey of the prints, an illustrated artistic and personal biography, memoirs by Yoshida's artist sons and short essays on Yoshida's career round out this lovely book.

Excellent
An excellent introductory book on modern art. A must. Very well written

Artists & Art Students Will Love It.
I love the "World of Art" series. It is definitely published with the artist and art student in mind. You get a lot of art at an affordable price. Most art books in this price range are thin volumes of washed-out color and dismal black and white, with a sprinkling of superficial text. Their subject is usually limited to the handful of artists that are wildly popular with the public, such as the impressionists. Not this series!

"A Concise History of Modern Painting" is especially well-packed, with 500 illustrations, 118 of them in excellent color. Pages are semi-slick so the art reproduces well. The plates are very well planned. Thumbing through the book, you get the feeling of color, color, color! Black-and-white plates are reserved for drawings (graphite, ink, charcoal), prints, and a few sculptures. All of these are well-suited to reproduction in black and white (although there is also a 43-page appendix, "a pictorial survey of modern painting", featuring 6-8 black-and-white illustrations per page). "A Concise History of Modern Painting" discusses artists who work within styles the author describes as specifically modern (as distinguished from earlier periods). It focuses on ideas, works and movements. All illustrations are chosen within that context. (Realistic artists are not represented.)

The book includes text references, a bibliography, a list of works reproduced, and an index. It's a 6"x8" paperback edition, about an inch thick--a good size for packing. The binding is glued, not sewn, but it seems durable, and I think it will last. I carry mine on trips, though I haven't had it long enough to see how well it wears. I discovered the "World of Art" series while travelling and bought several titles. They're the best art books at this price I've ever found.

Incredible research and artists' profiles
Contemporary Painting in Poland is an absolute delight for all wishing to better understand the contemporary art (painting) scene in Poland. Mr. Noyce provides a brief, yet thorough history of Polish painting, accompanied by insightful profiles of 48 notable, contemporary Polish artists. Excellent examples of the artists' works fill the 236 large-formatted pages. As a Polish-American, I found the book truly inspiring and have reserved a special spot in my library for it.

Excellent Overview
I have both of Mr. Noyce's books covering Polish painting and graphic arts. They represent an excellent overview of current art in Poland. I lived in Poland for two years and purchased many pieces by artists represented in Noyce's books. This book covered quite a few artists I had not known about. From my experience, contemporary painting is not as developed or respected in Poland as the graphic arts and printmaking. This is a great reference guide that I am going to use the next time I am back in Poland.

It is wonderful to have these books accompanying my art collection.
