Small but Exquisite Art Collection
This is a small but lovely collection of Madonna and Child artwork.
The previous reviewer-Craig Pike's review obviously is with the wrong book as this book has nothing to do with the birth process.

Absolutely incredible
A must have. From the male and female hormon to fertilization to birth, a comprehensive look at the birth process. You WILL ask the question, "How'd they take that picture?" Fantastic.

A Child's Book of Art: Discover Great Paintings

Paintings Explored and Explained
"Children look straight into a picture and respond instinctively. Adults who have forgotten how to do this will find it refreshing to look again through the eyes of a child."

Paintings can be unsolved mysteries to many of us. When we look at a piece of art, we might want to know why people are wearing certain items or how old the painting is and what it all means.

In this book, investigation has been made easier by pictures being taken out of the actual piece of art. So, on the right hand page, you have the complete picture and on the left, you have various pictures "cut out" of the main picture and explained.

So, when you are looking at the picture of Saint George and the Dragon, you will see a picture of the dragon and a question that says: "What do you think the dragon stands for?" On the right side, you see an answer: "The dragon is a symbol that stands for evil."

In the "Portrait of the Marquise de Pompadour" you might want to know what a rose stands for or why red wax is sitting on the writing table.

Lucy Micklethwait first started creating collections of paintings for children after many years of looking at pictures with her own children. This activity introduced her children to the world of art and helped Lucy rediscover her own love of art.

Lucy has selected various paintings for different periods in history.

What a beautiful book! I bought this book for my first-grader with some hesitation since I wasn't so sure whether he would be interested in the fine arts in this era of Pokemon and Digidmon. To my surprise he loved it and wanted to go through the whole book in one sitting.

Ms. Micklethwait chose lovely, well-known paintings and she manages to guide young readers to find, understand and appreciate all the small details in these paintings, while at the same time, causing them to gain general knowledge in the process. I found my son copying down the names of the Greek gods in the Primavera painting. The then showed me that Mercurious, the messenger, has wings on his feet to speed his way. Way go go! I will be on the lookout for her other books.

Highly recommended!
I liked this book a lot-- I thought the pictures were very beautiful, very fluid, not tight or rigid. The work here is similar to another Cincinnati artist, Caroline Williams, but Mr. Orlemann is much more relaxed and his subject matter a little more contemporary. A lot of city scenes, busy streets, skyscapers, bridges and such. The use of the watercolor on some of the sketches is very nice also, but there are more sketches than there are actual "paintings." I also liked reading the text under the pictures-- I actually learned a thing or two! Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Cincinnati, or that is familiar with Mr. Orlemann's work.

A great gift for my girlfriend!
I found this book for my girlfriend for her birthday-- she LOVED it! It had all of the sites she loved to visit while growing up in Cincinnati-- it was a nice trip down memory lane for her. She liked it so much, she's getting one for her mom and dad for their anniversary! Very nice book-- thumbs up!

Whoops, There's Not Really A Door There
Richard Haas is a trompe l'oeil artist (a style of painting that gives an illusion of photographic reality). Not content with the usual practice of painting to canvas, he applies his art to the sides of buildings. He takes boring, blank building walls and transforms them into unbelievable elegance. Adding realistic looking windows to these walls is child's play to him. His true talent lies in creating three-dimensional scenes. What was once bare brick is now fully windowed with a grand curved stairway entrance complete with sculptures and fountains.

A dreary Con-Ed substation comes alive with a new architectural style. Windows and doors appear, and the crowning touch is an open courtyard that penetrates the entire building and shows the Brooklyn Bridge behind it - remember this is a flat brick wall.

The photographic realness is truly awesome. The book is full of high quality color prints on glossy paper. If you like photography, art, and architecture, then this is a must read book.

Excellent photos
Richard Haas is an extraordinary artist who uses buildings rather than conventional materials for his artwork. His work is displayed on historic buildings in some of the world's greatest cities. Because of his art, some of these buildings have been saved from the wrecking ball. Not only is Mr. Haas's work exciting and interesting to look at, but it also brings life back to aging cities. Definitely a great coffee table book.

This book is so Great!
This book is nice. Claudia gets a job to watch the grandson of Grandmother Madden.People have said that Grandmother Madden has destroyed all her paintings.Claudia thinks that no artist will destroy his/her painting and she has only a little clues to solve the mystery

Good, but not great
This was one of the better mysteries. Claudia gets a job helping the granddaughter of Grandmother Madden prepare to sell the house. Claudia notices that some of the paintings disappear, and some weird art dealers are yhanging around. Also Grandmother Madden supposedly dystroyed most of her work. But Claudia doesn't think so. She thinks there still around. And the only clue she has is a mysterious Japanese woman painting

Surprising Read aloud
We read this book frequently in our Storytimes. The overlays demonstrate how the colors mix. The optical illusion, is more suited to one on one situations. We leave the book out after storytime so the children can try the illusion. One word of warning about the illusion, it will not work with children who are color blind. It took me 10 minutes to figure out why my red/green color blind cousin could not see the effect. :-P

Will inspire and delight young artists
My 6 1/2 year old daughter brought this book home from the school library, read it with dad and after that still rushed to find me and read it all again. Her delight as each concept unfolded was contagious. The use of overlays made the concepts of mixing colors and printing come alive and sparked her imagination. Each page was a new discovery. This self-avowed young artist said, "We've GOT to get this book, mama!" Congratulations to Ruth Heller for producing a non-fiction work that inspires and thrills the young.

Color and Meaning : Practice and Theory in Renaissance Painting

A must reader for any painter with any interest in painting.
A wonderful read, thorough, focused and all about looking. One of only a few books that truly approaches the idea of painting and its history on its own terms. Mrs Hall beautifully discusses ideas of process as being inextricably bound to the idea of particular meaning. Beginning with painting's early interest in the description of likness and the evocation of literal space, she traces a remarkably plausible chronological development wherein all of what are now the standard conventions of painting are discovered. Mrs Hall has written a book that seems custom built for painters; it is wonderful.

EXCELLENT BOOK
I WILL ONLY WRITE, THAT AS A PAINTER, THIS BOOK SERVES TO CREATE NOT ONLY HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF RENAISSANCE PAINTING, BUT ENRICHES THAT HISTORY WITH THOROUGH EVALUATION OF THE CURRENT USE OF SCIENTIFIC/CONSERVATION METHODS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW AN ARTIST'S TECHNIQUE IS INTEGRAL TO UNDERSTANDING THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST AND THE MEANING IN A PIECE OF ARTWORK. IT REPRESENTS AN IMPORTANT BREAKTHROUGH IN MODERN ART HISTORY THROUGH ITS ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNIQUE, COLOR THEORY, AND THEIR SERVICE TO CONTENT IN THE RENAISSANCE. DR. HALL'S OTHER BOOK (ALSO OUT OF PRINT, ALAS), WHICH IS A SERIES OF ESSAYS BY PEOPLE IN THE FIELD, SHOULD ALSO BE IN PRINT: "COLOR AND TECHNIQUE IN RENAISSANCE PAINTING: ITALY AND THE NORTH".

excellent guide to color
quiller's guide is the most systematic color text available. it combines a deep knowledge of traditional color theories with a huge amount of quiller's personal research into how paints actually mix as colors. central to the book is quiller's color mixing wheel for watercolors, oils and acrylics, probably the most accurate color wheel available in any published work (though he has a revised color wheel, available separately). he explores the monochrome, analogous, complementary and split complementary color schemes through many demonstration paintings and detailed mixing instructions. he emphasizes repeatedly the importance of a strong value composition, and careful variations in color saturation, in building the painting. an indispensible book.

the best books of practical color theory and application
Stephen Quiller has his own theory for the uses of color in artwork. It is easy to read, follow and has lots of examples. These examples include poor choices, as well as good ones, which helps the artist to distiguish by visuals, the difference. An excellent reference for working and learning artists. It makes quick work of the confusion regarding complementary, secondary and tertiary colours and shows the direct co-relations. It also comes with a wall poster reference to the Quiller colour wheel. Colours are listed by standard commercial names which makes it easy for the artist to locate the proper colour with which they wish to work. All sorts of little hints to help the struggling artist handle media more easily.

Need Inspiration?
This book had me absorbed day after day examining the photo's and advice. It's the inspiration to overcome those white walls and neutral tones you see in every house you visit on the block. To decorate with a flare and have the confidence to use color, the book is a must-have.

A fun read
Ms Wills has a wonderful way with words. She has a great way of presenting the detailed "why and wherefore" of the color decorating decision process, yet never runs the danger of losing her readers. A feeling of involvement throughout, i.e. "We're in this together, let's have fun." A great book to hold as a reference, and one you can easily recommend to friends.

Nobody explains color better than Hilary Page
Not only is Hilary Page a fine artist, but she writes wonderful books that explain art technique.

If you aren't pleased with the results you are getting when mixing colors, do read this book.

If you are a watercolorist, the Guide to Watercolor Paints by the same author is valuable reading as well.

A very good book for basics in watercolor for beginners
I have had this book in my library for many years and recommend it to all of my beginning students. Good demonstrations to follow along and to learn how to apply underpainting and mix colors.
