Absolutely beautiful!I was surprised and thrilled when I opened my box and found this lovely book. It's filled with Norman Rockwell's work, has enough writing space, and it seems sturdy enough to last a lifetime. I love it!
Absolutely FabulousI can't think of anything better than flipping through this address book to look up the location of a dear old friend. For years, Norman Rockwell delighted people with his pictures on the Saturday Evening Post, and this book is a perfect reminder of those times. The cover and picture inserts bring life to the pages. For a man that to some of us was a part of our family, what could be better than having his genius stroked throughout a book where we keep the names of those we hold dear. It's perfect.

California ImpressionismAs the inside cover reads and I completely agree, "Lavishly illustrated, painstakingly researched, and gracefully written, this handsome volume is the definitive study of California's distinctive style of Impressionism." Dr Will South provides a chronological survey of the California Impressionists starting in the later part of the 1800's up to the final days in the 1920's-30's. Dr. Gerdts analyzes the California Impressionist Movement with style. With biographies of approximately 75 artists and an extensive bibliography, this volume is not just a coffee table art book. It is an important research tool to conduct an extensive study of any of these artists.
A definite must for those who love Impressionism! The paintings throughout the book are reproduced in radiant and superb color, helping one grasp the phenomenal beauty conveyed by the works. The pages are thicker and heavier than most of the art books on the market today. The paintings of the California masters are included as well as some works by lesser known artists. The text is fresh, easy and fun to read, and the chapters are well organized, exploring the origins and evolution of the Impressionistic movement in California. I predict this volume will become a classic. Definitely worth the money!

Fabulous!I love Bill's art. He had a simple way of capturing the moment and beauty of the land, his land here in Canada. I'm so glad we've been able to see these marvellous paintings and sketches in a book format. In this way his work, which never gained him the notoriety he deserved while alive, allows us all to enjoy them around the world.
Canadian Wilderness as seen from the inside. Marvelous!Bill Mason brings alive the Canadian wilderness in a way that I only imagined possible. The emotion in his paintings and words took me to the remote corners of canoe country like nothing short of being there would. The deep understanding that Mason had for the north country came out strongly in this book; so much so that I often found myself wandering into the corners of one of his paintings, remembering a trip to a similar lake, or waterfall, or wilderness escape. This is a MUST read for anyone who enjoys the outdoors

A must have for your "how to" library! This is truly an excellent book! Great techniques and illustrations shown with fabulous detail! Inspirational too! I highly recommend this book, especially if you like painting buildings or scenes with buildings. One of the best watercolor books I've seen!
Indispensible book for the serious artist.I am a "profesional" seascape artist and needed a push to get myself painting again; and perhaps a change of pace. I find that this book is brim-full of important info, techniques and ideas which any artist can enjoy applying. Raves!

The best book on painting pastel landscapes.Mr. Aggett shows how he paints with his unison pastels huge vistas. He explains his methods very clearly & his demonstrations are broken down in sections so it makes it easy to follow. I often take this book with me when I am painting on location to help me set up my palette of pastels & easel with paper. Every landscape painter should have this book in their collection.

Love to eat them mousies . . .When I was a grad student and T.A. in the '70s, I had on the wall of my office Kliban's "Love to eat them mousies" poster, which frequently caused passersby to stop in for a closer look. Some laughed while others just shook their heads -- which is pretty much how people have always reacted to what I regard as one of the slyest, most consistently funny cartoon artists around. While he did a lot of terrific non-cat drawings, it's for those chunky, funky cats that he's best known, and this collection should please his many fans. They're all here, too: Cats in red basketball shoes and cowboy boots, cats walking their dogs, cats pursuing mice on cross-country skis, cats feeding wieners to the birds in the park, sumo cats, cats enjoying sushi, disorganized cats competing with mice in outrigger canoes, cats playing Dixieland, cats trying on fashionable tail covers in a cat clothing store, cats painting murals, cats lounging around the campfire, and (of course) cats playing mousie-eating folksongs on the guitar. To put it simply, this is great stuff from a very talented man who died much before his time.
CAT HEAVENPomegranate has done a wonderful job of gathering all of Kliban's paintings from a series of calendars that were published from 1977-1986 and presenting them here in full color for the first time. A true treasure trove for any Kliban fan or cat lover.

VIVE CHARLOTTE!I've fallen in love with Charlotte all over again! Giverny, and now Paris, in the year 1893, come alive through the American Charlotte's amusing journal-a charming collection of observations, illustrations, french words and collages. As she learns about the painters around her-we learn. One can almost hear the sound of sleighs gliding through the streets of Paris on a winters night, and taste the "croquembouche"-the tower of cream puffs Charlotte alluringly descibes on Christmas Eve! Once again, Joan Knight allows the paintings of impressionists (such as Cassat, Monet, MacMonnies and more-) to help tell Charlottes story-to great success. As with all of Mrs. Knights selections, Monet's "The Magpie" is used to great effect-as Charlotte and friend Lizzy, upon their way home from making snow sculptures, stumble upon him painting a winter scene. There is no doubt that the Mrs. Knight, and the illustrator, Melissa Sweet-succeed in making Charlotte's voice very real-she is a most endearing character-one we all would love to have as friend! One can only hope Charlotte's adventures go on from Paris!
exquisite visuals and textI bought this book because I was a huge fan of the first Charlotte in Giverny! Being a lover of all things French, I am equally captivated by this second book in this fabulous series. The text transports the reader to a magical time in our artistic history and the "journal" style of the text is witty and wonderful to read. Each page is truley a work of art--a magical collage that makes me want to create my own scrap book. You truley get lost in Charlotte's world. I read it to my daughter every night. Bravo!

Many decorative-painting books concentrate on a limited range of simple wooden surfaces. This one instead chooses innovative destinations for the more experienced paintbrush: salt and pepper shakers, a flour sifter, a table runner, cabinets, a lamp base. By applying decorative-painting techniques to entire scenes rather than isolated motifs, author Catherine Holman endows her work with a delightful folk-art flair. The book's title tells the truth: these scenes really are charming, and the choice of subject matter is pleasantly suited to each object. A quaint brick tea shoppe adorns a little teapot; a snow-filled landscape complete with warmly lit houses beneath a starry sky bestrides the tin shade of an oil lamp; the large four-bin cabinet sports a scene for each season; the umbrella stand features (of course) a rainy countryside topped by a rainbow. Look closely to be rewarded by wonderful details hidden in the scenes--a lacy hammock, a glass of lemonade, a scarecrow, a woman gardening. Full scene patterns, color-keyed charts of paints, and detailed materials lists accompany the superb directions and good color photos, and ordering information is provided for each of the nine items to be decorated. Basic decorative painting skills are a must before attempting these projects, but with such good guidance even the brave novice may produce something to be proud of. --Amy Handy

Chauvet Cave: The Art of Earliest TimesI purchased this book more as an art lover than an anthropologist and have found it fascinating. The authors have been maticulous in their documentation of their findings. The art and the cave floor photos with inhancements are incredible. History, animal and art lovers will all benefit from this work. My only suggestion to the authors is that the glossary be expanded to aid readers such as myself who have a limited knowledge base of archeology et al. A great addition to anyones library.
30,000 years oldThis book is a bit different from many of the others that one can purchase about cave art. This focuses on a relatively newely discovered cave (1994) and documents the fruits of the first years of exploration and investigation. The results of this research are well written in this book and highlight a lot of the excitement of finding paintings that were as old when the Lascaux paintings were made as those Lascaux paintings are now! 30,000 years ago man made sophisiticated and mature pictures and this book does them justice. Parts of the text are quite technical and maybe not of great interest to someone just trying to 'learn a little bit about cave art.' But this book was not realized to be just another overview of cave art in general and does not really take the place of one either. It is as beautiful book as the cover would suggest and is full of luscious photographs not only of the art works themselves, but also of the raw natural beauty of the cave. I highly recommend this book!!!
