Great book. Also, makes a nice gift.
I bought this book after seeing his artwork on [a website]. I really enjoyed this book. I even bought more to give as gifts. His biography was fascinating and the images of his art are great. I highly recommend this book.

Where's the oversized edition!
Peter Ellenshaw's art is incredible! The only thing wrong with this book is that it is not over-sized, but at least I can enjoy the book regularly. Seeing some of the originals at the Powell Street Gallery in San Francisco fills the gap. Mr. Ellenshaw knows how to place a paint stroke that lets the viewer's eye fill in the detail.

What an incredibly talented artist!!!
I saw his paintings in San Francisco at the Powell Street Gallery and had to buy this book! It is a wonderful chronicle of his amazing life and body of work. A must have for art lovers and Disney fans alike!

The authors of the superb The Complete Guide to Glass Painting expanded on the 400-motif library included in that volume to produce a little handbook brimming with great pattern templates. The 22 design categories include flowers, foliage, animals, seashore, celestial, holidays, alphabets, and borders--some very basic, others extremely detailed, and all nicely conceived and not cutesy. A brief techniques section explains pattern transfer and outlining techniques. These patterns would also lend themselves easily to many other crafts, such as wood burning or painting on other surfaces. --Amy Handy

A FURTHER MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHORS
Incredibly, this is still one of the most successful motif books available - it has sold nearly 50,000 copies worldwide. Don't miss the other books that we have written, our new motif book, 1,000 Motifs For Crafters and Art Nouveau Glass Painting Made Easy. Our new book, The Complete Guide to Stamping is published in March 2004. If you have broadband internet access you can see us featured regularly on www.createandcraft.tv where we present many of the shows. Also don't miss regular features on us on HGTV in the United States.

Great resouce!
I understand that this book was written with glass painters in mind, but I have found it to be a wonderful resource for several crafts. The drawings are clear, concise, and scan beautifully for enlargement or reduction. The technique instructions were brief, but surprisingly complete. The designs run the gammut from simple to ornate, humerous to mythical, and everything in between. If I only had one design book to suggest to a beginning crafter this would be it.

glass painter's motif ary
I saw this book in the library I feel like hugging this book I enjoy each and every picture. I wish to have one in my collection but I could not get this book. This is the best book I saw for the glass painting.

Art and golf combine for hole-in-one...
Hallowed Ground is a beautiful book, capturing spectacular locations from the greatest courses in both America and the United Kingdom.
Included in this hardback collection of art by Linda Hartough is the fabled 7th hole at Pebble Beach, and many holes from Augusta National's Amen Corner. Pieces on each course by Jaime Diaz highlight battles that have taken place on the fairways, and give life to the paintings as showdowns on 18th greens are described.
What makes this book interesting is that when you see the life-like paintings and read about the classic golf that has gone on in that scene, you are able to put yourself in the picture. It is amazing to be able to watch the final round of the 1981 US Open just by reading this book.
To a true fan of golf, or anyone who loves a good coffee table book, Hallowed Grounds is a perfect edition to your collection. Buy this book today, and put yourself in the picture!

Her Passion is Painting
This "coffee table" style book works for me because of my passion for golf and my love for famous golf courses. Linda Hartough may be the best landscape artist I've seen in rendering these classic courses with the precision of modern day photography.

What I really got out of this book was a memory recollection of playing a majority of these courses. Looking at these paintings I was thrown into the distant memory of playing Pebble Beach, Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot, Olympic Club, Carnoustie, St. Andrews (Old Course), Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, and Royal Troon. It was like de ja vu all over again!

Also worth checking out are the Augusta National paintings. This might be her finest work. I especially liked her work on hole #'s 10,11,12, and 15. Augusta is the best course in the world. Second to none. Her painting here is some of her finest work also.

If Linda Hartough ever publishes paintings of the century old courses of Ireland, in particular the courses designed by Old Tom Morris and Alister Mackenzie , I will buy it. I would really like to see her render and paint the "classic" Irish courses of Ballybunion, Lahinch, Ardglass, Royal Portrush, Newcastle, and Royal County Down. Those classic links style courses are some of the finest on this planet and really bring back fond memories of my playing days.

Terrific!
I was fortunate to have the Golf Channel on a few months ago. Linda Hartough, the artist featured in this book was on with a few of her originals. I immediately purchased the book. After browsing the book 3 or 4 times, taking in her breathtaking artwork, I decided to read a few of the writings by Jaime Diaz on some of my favorite courses. The writings are as enjoyable as the artwork. This book should become required reading for anyone playing the game, especially for golfers new to the game. They would gain a greater appreciation for golf. Thank you Linda Hartough and Jaime Diaz

I feel like I can be a teacher of art after reading this!
Found this book in my local library and dind't want to return it. I don't really like Gloria Foss's paintings, but she is an amazing teacher. Very well structered, clear, very detailed, covers everything that seemed so confusing to me before. It gave me so much confidence, that I feel like I can be a teacher of art now. It's expensive, but it's the only book you need. It covers media, tools, drawing, perspective, color theory, 3-dimensional shadowing, composition, design and everything is easily understandable. The chapter on design gave me more information than a course in interior design that I took.

I'm buying it!
I got this book out of the library among many other techniques books in various mediums on painting, composition, drawing, color theory, and this one is the best and most clearly comprehensive one I've read. Pricey, but I am buying it as a reference book.

Excellent reference book for beginner or advanced.
It's not often one finds a book that is this usefull. Filled with good advice and examples, color and B&W, that would be usefull to beginning or experienced painters. This book refrains from trying to teach a particular style of painting. Rather it covers subjects of interest to all painters in oil. I am primarily an acrylic painter but that has never detracted from the usefullness of this book. There are chapters on structural drawing, perspective, modeling, basic and advanced color theory, composition and design, color in landscape, even "Practical concerns for the emerging artist." The color theory chapters are particularly good, with examples and exhaustive color tables to help one learn one of the most difficult parts of painting, the use of color. One may or may not like Foss's style of painting, but this book is designed to help you learn the techniques that will allow you to find your own style.

It had beautiful pictures and was nicely written.
It makes you want to paint even though you could be doing an other hobby. It has wonderful illustrations that were done by kids too.

Five stars for this "how to paint" book for children.
Basketball star, Patrick Ewing, and art educator Linda L. Louis have teamed together to produce a colorful book designed to encourage youngsters to put paint to paper and to express themselves through the techniques of the paintbrush. "In the Paint" begins with an introduction by Mr. Ewing that provides an account of his early childhood interest in drawing and painting, tells how he diligently practiced his hobby in the same way that he later diligently practiced and refined his talents on the basketball court. He realized an early dream when he graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Fine Arts. The book goes on to teach the basics of painting to young people, how to gather the needed materials, how to mix paint to achieve every shade of color, how to select and handle brushes, how to choose what to paint and how to paint it. Addressed to youngsters, it is nevertheless an invaluable instructional book for teachers and parents alike. Of particular interest to them will be the concluding section written by Ms. Louis, "Tips for Parents and Teachers". Chock full of paintings by young students themselves, it is remarkable that this clearly written and beautifully decorated book can be offered at such a low price.

A wonderful guide for parents, teachers and the kids!
Parents and teachers will learn how to set just the right conditions allowing their children to make paintings using their own "voices", expressing their own ideas and making their own images .... and the kids will have great fun as they paint their hearts out!

Este libra es buena
This book, on my course syllabus for a course on Spanish art , was a great addition to my library. Tomlinson is a scholar dedicated to giving the pertinent information in the proper art historical format without tireless embellishment. More on artists like Ribera or Zurburan would have rounded out the book but in all it is an excellent source for students writing papers and art historians looking for valid interpretations of Spanish artistic merit without bias. It was refreshing to read a book and not have the art continually compared to Italian & French painters. Instead it offers the reader very important information with excellent images of the Spanish contribution to world of art. Brava.

Fabulous survey
Well organized and beautifully composed reproductions make this book an indispensable guide and/or introduction to the artists working in Spain from 1561-1828. The historical and political/social context of their works is explored as well as the evolving artistic vison and techniques that were developing during this period. Major influences from Italy and elsewhere are sited. A very enjoyable and enlightening book.

An excellent overview of painting in Spain
This is a very good, concise look at the painting in Spain from 1561-1828. Janis Tomlinson is very careful to point out the problems with the term "Spanish painting" and tries to go beyond this idea, and to discuss painting in Spain. She chooses to not discuss the Spanish born Jusepe Ribera (as he was mostly active in Italy) but does look at painters from France and Italy who worked in Spain. Tomlinson also tries to get away from stereotyped views of Spanish painting being only somber and religious. I liked how the history of Spain and of Europe was tied into the painting in Spain. The patrons of artists in Spain were also talked about, what they wanted and how they reacted to different artists. Many painters are discussed, even ones whose work is not often seen outside of Spain. The book is has lots of illustrations, not only of paintings but of places. There is also a handy map of Spain in the front of the book. The pictures are naturally on the small side, since this book is rather small, and the pictures rarely take up the whole page. Tomlinson is a good writer, the book is quite readable and enjoyable.

Good for creative children
When I was little (a long time ago at this point!) I had this book and was utterly fascinated by it. I remember trying to dye yarn myself after reading it... (well, that didn't work out so well as I recall-- since this is NOT a how-to book, just an engaging story-- but it was fun all the same.) Now that I'm an adult, I would definately recommend this book to anyone with "creative" children who love to make things.

Kids book? I still love it at 30 years old!
I was raised on this book and it has always been a favorite of mine. The pictures are delightful and the story has stayed with me through the years. I love how Geraldine decides to eat all the yummy plants they were going to use to dye the wool. OOPS! Now I find it is on the school reading list and being used in the classroom! I highly recommend this book as a favorite for children and parents alike.

Goat's point of view
This is a very funny story about a goat that tells the story of how her fur becomes a Navajo rug. If you look close enough at the front cover, you'll notice the book is written by the goat herself. It's a wonderful book for all ages, especially Navajo children.

Lively Art History
I taught college level painting and art history courses for ten years. This is one of the most memorable books I used as source material. Usually a treatment of Impressionism will write of it as a movement in response to the paintings of the Academy; an inquiry into the play of light and instantaneity. Fine, fine, but how many books do we really need that say the same thing ? This book looks at changes in the architecture of Paris which changed the city from a network of villages into a web of wide boulevards and massive, sometimes monotonous buildings. People (many of them young) were moving into the city and feeling the displacement and dehumanization which we usually associate with depictions of Victorian era London.

Herbert spends a good bit of time looking at the clothing of individuals portrayed in paintings to ruminate about their social standing. His keen eye for gesture picks up a lot. Looking at an outdoor cafe scene by Manet, he notices that the young man at the table with a woman is actually kneeling next to her, not seated there. From this he infers that the man is trying to pick up the jeune fille. The rather prudish look on her face seems to confirm that this is what's happening.

The copious illustrations are wonderful. Many are of paintings which are infrequently reproduced in art books. There are also a lot of works by Gustave Caillebotte whose compositions are so fascinating. The writing is lively. I think this is a terrific book for a lover of Impressionism and/or a lover of Paris. It's a wonderful fusion of images and prose. I'm just so glad to find it available at such a reasonable price.

Impressionism, Art,, Leisure, and the Parisian Society
This was one of the most informative books I have read on the subject of Impressionism. I found the writing easy to follow and Mr.Herbert's command of his subject matter is fantastic. The narrative was so that one could grasp the concepts and his writing style was a delight. If I were to rate this, it would be at the very top of my list of recommended reading, not only for artists or historians, but for anyone interested in the subject.

Easy Impressionism
I must say that I've read quite a few Impressionist books in recent years. In no way do they come close to the entertainment and ease which I found in this book! As I began to read it, more for pleasure than anything else, I found that I was actually interested enough to continue reading it until the end! There was no overtly boring or tedious sections to the book and the full page photos only helped to enliven my imagination. An excellent read and an easy study!

Incredible Performance
Buy this book - you will not be disappointed. It is a work to look at again and again whether you are a railfan, traveler, or an artist. Some of Rose's paintings are romantic evocations of times and places that were found throughout the country not so long ago. Other pictures in the book have an edgier quality to them. In either case he captures the mood, light, and geographical setting of the never-ending drama of the American railroad. Rose was a painter who had a technical grasp of the nuts and bolts aspects of his subjects. He also had good artistic technique - I have found myself coming back to this book repeatedly and asking "how did he do that?" The quality of printing and binding is excellent and the introductory essay helps to place the paintings in the context of Ted Rose's life. I have bought several copies of this work as gifts for people and they have all been pleased with it.

Glorious artwork and great biographical information.
This is a wonderful book you can read straight through. The life of the author and his relationship to the railroads of the USA is fascinating and the text about the evolution of his art is appealing. The photography is exceptional. This book is a must buy for fanciers of railroads and art. Highly recommended.

In the Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose
A terrific selection of paintings by marvelous railroad artist. Many of Rose's paintings are not on public view, having been done for private commission. So far he markets no prints or lithographs, so either you buy an original or you buy this book. Typical fine job of printing and binding. High value book, likely to be worth lots more when out of print.

The funny secret of the mysterious artist, Felix Clousseau
When the mysterious Felix Clousseau enters a portrait of a duck n the Grand Contest of Art, the judges and other artists are appalled. But then the painting QUACKS and suddenly Clousseau is a genius. Everyone wants one of his incredible paintings, but just as quickly everyone discovers that having a painting that comes to life might not be a good idea, especially if it is a volcano, a boa constrictor or a waterfall. Jon Agee's "The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau" is a sly and clever joke told and drawn in great big strokes. This is one of those books that you read, get to the last page, and smile as soon as you see the punchline for the joke. Then you pass it on to someone else to enjoy. It is sort of like those jokes you get in e-mail that one friend sends to all of their friends; the difference is, this one is actually funny!

Entertaining, novel story!!
When the Royal Palace hosts an art contest, all the great artists come out to submit their paintings, like Gaston du Stroganoff with his painting, "The King on his Throne". However, an unknown artist named Felix Closseau also enters the contest. Except where everyone else's paintings are huge and feature the king, Felix's painting is small, and is of a duck.

Considering how seriously the French take their art, you can imagine the uproar at this ridiculous painting. That is, until the duck QUACKS. Then, the duck merrily waddles OUT of the picture itself, and off on it's way. Felix wins first prize.

At first, everyone wants to own a Closseau, until disaster strikes wherever his works are hung. A painting called "The Sleeping Python" is held in high regard, until the Python wakes up one night!! Volcanoes fill rooms with smoke, waterfalls gush gallons onto the floor, Closseau himself is put into jail! That is, until one night when a thief breaks into the royal palace to steal the crown...

Jon Agee has written or illustrated over a dozen books, including books playing with language-books of oxymorons and palindromes, most noticeably. However, "The Incredible Painting..." ranks as one of my personal favorites because of it's original story and fun ending. It's story is fun, quick moving and easy to read (though beginning readers may have difficulty decoding some of the French-ish names). Closseau himself is quite a character, too: a short stooped man with beret and enormous graybeard that successfully hides his face (and most of the rest of him!). Very young children will love the fun absurdity of things coming out of the pictures, while older children will appreciate the havoc that a living painting can wreck! Fun and highly recommended!

an original, funny book
My kids loved it; highly recommended! It's so nice to find an intelligent children's book that amuses adults.
