A great book about a rare subject
This book is not widely available but it is a real gem, especially from this first printing! It's great that Amazon is now carrying it. I was lucky enough to get a personal, signed copy from the author and really enjoyed it. It is well written and thoroughly researched. Even if you're not from San Diego, you will enjoy this story about the making, unmaking, and revival of a historic roller coaster.

So many authors overlook good topics right near their homes, but this author found a great story and stuck with it. I hope he rolls out another project soon.

Gold Rush Country
I first read this book ten years ago while on a trip in Sonora and the surrounding Gold Country. The book pointed me in the right direction as to where to visit and what to see. Since then I have been back to the Gold County several times and always take my Sunset book with me. This book tells you the history and stories behind all the towns and sites waiting to be explored. This is a top rate book that is a must have travel companion to the Gold Country.

Golden Dreams

Stepping back in time...
The California Pioneer Series is a wonderful series from the first book to the last. Elaine Schulte can intertwin the characters so cleverly and expertly. Rose Wilmington was in the first book in the series, although she was not a main character, Elaine Schulte was setting the stage for the following book. In the first book, The Journey West, Rose seemed to have everything going for her. She was a stronge Christian and had a fiance. Life seemed to be wonderful. In Golden Dreams you can take a closer look at Rose's life and just how tragic it really is. With the focus shifting from Abby in the first book to Rose in the second book, you take a deeper look into a Christian's trials and tribulations. After the death of Rose's beloved fiance, Rose is heart broken. Willard, Rose's fiance's twin brother, attaches himself to Rose. He is not a believer and not a gentleman. Rose flee's to California on a clipper ship in search for her father, and long time friend Abby. This book goes through Rose falling in love, and then having to make the choice between love and God, for the man she is in love with is not a christian. It shows her pain and temptation and how even Christians can stumble and question God. I enjoyed this book because it was not like the "norm" in trashy novels. It was a nice easy read and actually made me think about my own relationship with God.

The REAL South Pacific WWII WAC
I doubt if any living American over the age of 21 is completely ignorant of the halcyon vision of WACs in the South Pacific during WWII. Well, that vision isn't very accurate. Selene Weise knows; she was one of very, very few WACs to actually serve in the area.

A cryptographer, Weise found herself in seemingly endless mud, rain, stifling heat, and misery living in tents with no creature comforts, mind-blowing boredom, and even some danger. With grossly inadequate food, an Army totally unprepared to meet even minimal needs of women, and supply lines that were often non-existent, the WACs just had to hunker down and endure. But through it all, Weise and her fellow WACs did just that. In the end, she came out of it with three battle stars; a rare thing for a woman soldier.

The book is remarkable not only for its unique story, but for the riveting method Weise uses to tell it. With only minimal fill-in, Weise reconstructs her experiences from letters she wrote home to her mother during the war. This gives the work a immediacy and sincerity that would be difficult to match. While trying hard to remain upbeat and positive about appalling conditions, Weise maintains a sense of humor and perspective that is commendable.

WWII is passing into history with fewer and fewer who remember. Of those, even fewer are aware women served too, let alone served in the South Pacific. Not only is this book a splendid history lesson, it's an outstanding good read. Brava!

A Fantastic Travel Companion
I bought this book the first day it came out! Terrill's pictures ALONE are a great reason to have this gem. But Grant's description of the various "getaways" are delightful as well. He makes me want to get out there and explore! I didn't even know half of these places existed!

I am VERY satisfied with this book and recommend it highly.

Suburban animals made exciting and important in an ecosystem
For those of us surrounded by the omnipresent gray squirrel they seem banal and often a pest. But for my inner city Latino children in a bilingual first grade, this book made real the interaction of animals in a suburban neighborhood. They understood how the squirrel interacts with other animals - often stealing their food; how the squirrel helps grow trees by hiding acorns (we learned about acorns the same week). The picture of the squirrel eating acorns was perfect. We learned how birds depend on feeders for their food. The illustrations were lovely and inventive - they especially liked the photo of the squirrel sleeping with his tail over his head for a shade (we acted it out with our hands) and the dog chasing the squirrel and cat. The neighborhood was unfamiliar to them as the housing was very different but they loved the animals. This book was a most positive teaching aide.
