Like finding an old dusty diary in an ancient sea trunk...
I found this book to be a facinating treasure of information from ships which sailed over 150 years ago to observations of island natives, all reflected in the actual words of this "Journal". Daily entries of locations, temperatures longitude, lattitude, wind, observations, personal notations and more make this a great addition to any collection. A few errors in the illustration's pagination noted in an errata do not detract from the quality of this book. Great evening reading for lovers of sailing, history or first-hand accounts/diaries. I like this very much and highly recommend it.

Each cruise line offers something didfferent; this book explains the many options availabel and exactly how to choose the right cruise for you.

Review by former Navy ship Captain
I feel this book is a terrific reference for those who have ever considered plying the waters around San Diego. It's interesting reading as well as very informative. I especially liked the references to often hard-to-find phone numbers. I wish I had this book on my ship when I was in command!

Tons of information about the Cubs!
The Cubs on Catalina is filled with great pictures of the Chicago Cubs, not to mention the treasure trove of stories the old baseball players tell. I can't find any other book, or even a documentary, where there is so much engaging information about these three exciting decades of the Cubs' history. I recommend this book to all Cub fans.

Great Book!
The recipes in this book are very well written and easy to follow. There is a section describing unfamiliar ingredients, and the lesser know cuisines of Southeast Asia such as Burmese and Cambodian have some very good representative dishes. Just about every recipe is usable, and there are some very exotic specialties such as Burmese tea leaf salad. The photography is excellent. I'd highly recommend this book.

A definitive, whimsical, and informed look into California.
Unlike average travel guides that list tourist traps in a droning disinterested voice, the author imbues California with life using a charming, very witty writing style. Simply put, he brings California to life for the reader. The guide he provides is unique and thoroughly enjoyable. The photographs selected are great in capturing the beauty of the state. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to explore California or just intersted in travelling through the written word.

Curbside LA
I...specialize in education and entertainment about death ingeneral as well as Hollywood. I throughly enjoyed this book. I use itas a reference guide that I keep in my car. I often entertain my guests by giving them tours of Hollywood's and Los Angeles' famous death spots. I like the facts about some of the lesser known people who made hollywood, but are often ignored. This is the strong point of this book and I rely on it. Most other Hollywood death books rehash the same material over and over.

Other products available at the same price generally only contain 10 to 20 images and no supporting written material.

The cycling guidebook for SD
The origianl guide was written in 1986 and this most recent edition is updated wih revised and added trips for all levels of cyclist. The included tours are reworked and include great little maps that covers both mileage and elevation. This is key so that one knows what one is getting into before one attempts a tour, nothing worse than to have a destination with a grade beyond one's abilities or training level ! I have three different bike tour books for San Diego county and find Shad's to be compact and the easiest to understand. The suggetions and recomendations are priceless. The star rating is helpful with one being flat like Lake Murray to the more challenging Mt. Palomar climb being a four star ride. The rating system is not only based on grade but total mileage of the tour as well. Throughout the years I've used this book the most and break it out every now and then to get new motivation. You can even pack this one with you if so desired. With so many roads to ride in San Diego county it is convenient to have the book for reference . It is an inspirational colllection of rides from throughout the diverse landscape that will guarantee to get one out of the rut of doing the same rides. This is the guidebook that'll get you to places you've thought about riding, it's that extra push you've been looking for.Recommended for mountain and road cyclists of all ages and abilities as there is something for everyone in this handy little book.

Beyond Platitudes
In Dangerous Peace-Making, Meyer-Knapp offers an intelligent, exhaustively researched, and brilliantly argued analysis of complicated and often unpredictable factors that must be understood if one wants to understand how wars end. While acknowledging the passion and commitment of "ordinary people committed to peace," Meyer-Knapp's case studies of wars in Rwanda, Bosnia, Ireland, Palestine, and South Africa illustrate her contention that "the peace-oriented should lay . . . responsibility squarely at the feet of . . . the political leaders," those with the power to sanction war and to end it. Her concluding chapter about justice, mercy, memory and peace offers mercy, especially, not as "forgiveness," but as deliberate decision and action. "Without mercy, without the willingness to desist from the punitive and destructive acts that remain within their power, there is no way for leaders in a war to bring their fighting to an end." This is an important book, one that thoughtful citizens should read, particularly those who want to move beyond over-simplified analyses to one grounded in historical and political realities.
