Excellent survival story, relates how much men can take!
After reading Steven Callahan's ADRIFT, I picked this up. Whereas Steve's own experience pitted him alone against the elements, this book pits 4 men together against the elements and their frustrations throughout it all. They managed to survive in the upsidedown hull of a trimaran (they termed "the cave") for four months, the four of them sleeping on one bed less than 4' wide. Very gripping reading, one of those you may well finish (all 200+ pages) in a single sitting

Capturing Hawaii, Aerial Views

Aerial photographs of Hawaii
A super book for Hawaii lovers! The photos are mostly spread over two pages to give the full impact and the colours and sharpness of the images are good. The photos span most of the Hawaiian islands and focus on landscapes as well as seascapes and towns. The written accompanying information is brief but concise and useful, as the main focus is on the beauty of the image. Certainly a book you can lose yourself in for a while. My only regret, is that there were not more pictures!

Great photographs and more.
Tom Walker makes terrific nature photographs and this book has a lot of them, but this is not just a picture book. The author adds natural history information and his personal observations to create images that are more than visual. One is left with a feeling for a wild and lonely land and the place of the caribou in it. This is a good introduction to the natural history of these fascinating animals.

A marvelous coffee table book
Ray Atkeson was one of the premier photographers of the American West. His life was spent turning out reams of high resolution, large-format photos of skiing, mountain and ocean scenes, and all manner of celebrated depictions of the varied panoramas of the West. This book is arguably his best.

Using an obviously very large format camera, and excellent color film, Mr Atkeson captures the Cascades in their finest moments, commencing with his indescribably beautiful jacket cover photograph of Mount Hood at sunset. Mr. Atkeson had the eye and heart of a pure artist, and his photographs of the various large volcanoes and numerous waterfalls of the range must be seen to be believed.

An easily read, well-organized text follows the journey north from Lassen Peak to the North Cascades National Park. This text movingly portrays Mr. Atkeson's love for this scenic region. The book was published before the epic eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, and we can only wonder at the awe the author must have felt as he photographed that event.

The book, and the photos, are works of a master in awe of his subject and will beautify and enrich your life, even if you have never visited the area. I recommend it highly, with caveat that you must never loan out the book.

Anyone whose ancestors were in the Pacific Northwest during the 1830's-1840's should find this book of great interest. I found several ancestors listed in this book. It gives marriage dates, dates of baptism's and death's.

A charming book with elegant receipes mixed with local lore.
I stumbled on this book at an estate sale. It is currently out of print, but I highly recommend adding this one to your collection. The author was chef to the Governor, Booth Gardner. The recipes were served at many a dinner party and can be easily mastered for your own entertaining. Wine suggestions are also included for each receipe. All throughout the book are interesting facts about Washington State and beautiful photographs and art work. All in all, I found this book charming, entertaining, and full of great recipes.

The Challenge

A masterful, true tale of sailing, discovery and greed
I knew little about the Clipper Ship era (and frankly had minimal desire to learn about it). I happened upon this book by accident... a fortuitous accident. Whipple relates the events surrounding the Gold Rush, the development of the Clipper Ship and the subsequent expansion of trade routes with the American West.

Clipper ships, we learn, were ultra-fast sailing cargo ships designed to round the tip of South America quickly. Bringing supplies and trade goods to San Francisco (and, hopefully, plenty of gold on the return trip), clippers predated both the Panama Canal and the steam ship.

"The Challenge" itself refers to races between the top clipper ships to make the harrowing trip around the Cape on ever-faster timing.

Included in the edition I have are some astounding photographs. My favorite is a stark picture of the Bay... littered with the hulls of thousands of abandoned ships deserted by crews rushing to the gold fields.

This book is a masterful monument to a fascinating era that has been largely overlooked.
