great
This is the most beneficial organization, and the guides they put out are absolutely amazing. They have literally hundreds of hostels (accomodations that are a lot cheaper than hotels) and this guide references them all with information on how to make reservations, cost, and they give information on special discounts for hostelling international members. If you're going abroad or travelling within the country, I highly suggest this book, plus the guides for Europe and New Zealand.

Beautiful and Educational
I just discovered this book and is a treasure!! For teachers in the classroom or to share with child who is interested in the natural world. Covers the entire ecosystem of the Pacific Coast forests, including the bugs. As a teacher I could use this book in grades 3-5 (maybe younger with help in reading) in a thematic unit for at least six weeks. Very rich in text, illustration and information. I highly recommend this book!

Still an indispensable guide to lieratures of Hawai'i.
This far reaching study, the first of its kind, is still an indispendable guide to the literatures of Hawai'i and required reading as such. The pathos and commitment of the book still come across, over the years and the distances of island separation and diaspora in Michigan. Read it on the beach or in your study.

Easy, natural gardening
I always look forward to a new gardening book from Ann Lovejoy and this one did not disappoint. Beautifully illustrated with Janet Loughrey's color photographs, this book is full of practical ideas for creating a Northwest garden that is both beautiful and easy to care for.

The writer's mantra "Natural, sustainable, organic" pervades the whole book - fourteen densely packed chapters covering topics from "Sustainable Garden Design" to selecting different types of plants. In the chapter on garden design she outlines what she considers to be the ten issues of good garden design. They are good, basic common sense, but so easy to ignore or forget. In just a couple of pages the writer addresses them briefly but vividly, then goes on to suggest how you might start your garden planning from an assessment of your garden's assets and liabilities.

One of Ann Lovejoy's strengths is her knowledge of and commitment to all aspects of sustainable natural gardening. She presents this thoroughly without being wordy (quite a trick in itself) and points out that natural gardening - working with nature - is far easier and more satisfying than trying to control nature.

In the chapters on plant selection the reader is guided in the choice of trees, shrubs, perennials etc that are not just pretty, or fashionable this year, but that will really work well in a specific place in your garden. Careful plant choices mean a minimum of stress for the plant and a minimum of effort for the gardener.

This writer's particular talent is her ability to combine practicality with vision. Her books, while primarily written for the gardener in the Pacific Northwest, contain much that is of value to gardeners elsewhere.

For anyone who loves the City by the Bay
If, like me, you are a California- or San Francisco-phile, then doubtless you already know of this book. It is THE classic account of the Gold Rush era, mostly because it isn't tarnished by revisionism--it was published in 1855! It has served as the first informational source for both researchers and novelists alike. But this review is intended for those who might not be familiar with the history of California, or may have read only the novels, journalism, or light non-fiction treatments. Don't be put off by the publication date or the book's level of detail--it is a very enjoyable read! The authors were not scholars or historians, but rather a doctor, a lawyer, and a journalist. It is jam-packed with anecdotes and factoids that will make you appreciate even more the accounts of Mark Twain, Joaquin Miller, Ambrose Bierce, Bret Harte, Henry George, etc. It is truly the root of the fruit.

The best !
For nine years this book has been my "bible" in my job as biller for a plant broker in Southern California. Although my education included two years of Latin (it helped me get the job!) I still need help in the proper spelling of plant names/species/varieties, since my boss is a great horticulturist but a very poor speller. This book is now dog-eared and falling apart, but I can't work without it. Although it was published many years ago and doesn't have the newest varieties, it still has many that the later books don't have, in a concise and readable format. I recommend it highly!

Annuals for Washington and Oregon

If you don't live and garden in the Northwest, ignore the title and buy this book anyway. Perhaps these annuals do particularly well in the region, but what is special about Annuals for Washington and Oregon reaches far beyond any specific state. Alison Beck and Marianne Binetti have written a book full of practical advice, packaged in a handy size and shape for carrying around to nurseries. And that is just what you'll want to do, as the first few pages are filled with a pictorial index of color photos of a great number of annuals arranged by common name. You can identify the plant you are interested in, see how it looks in bloom, and then refer to the cultural instructions later on in the book to check on how to site and care for it, as well as to see larger color photos of its form and habit. It's hard to think of a better format for introducing gardeners to the great variety of annuals available today and their many possibilities in the garden. --Valerie Easton

Very Balanced Reference Book
I found this book very useful. I especially enjoyed the rear section that graphically showed the comparision between each plant. Plenty of photos and more specific than other books. Highy recomended

Architecture in Los Angeles: A Compleat Guide
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (March, 1985)
Authors: David Gebhard and Robert Milton Winter
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $3.65
Average review score:

A Compleat Guide: Indispensable, but unavailable!
This book is the indispensable follow-on to Gebhard and Winter's 1977 "Architecture in Los Angeles & Southern California," which itself was the greatly expanded version of the skinny 1960's edition. The geographical focus area of "A Compleat Guide" is tighter, but the depth and comprehensiveness greatly expanded.

The authors have made invaluable contributions the understanding of Southern California architectural history with these books, all of which are now out of print. Those of us who are fortunate enough to possess copies of Gebhard and Winter's wonderful books have found them to be of endless value in their travels through the region, not to mention architectural research.

Given that "A Compleat Guide" is the only book of its kind for the Los Angeles region, and an exceptional one by any standard, it is shocking and disappointing to find the title unavailable. When will this book be reprinted? We can only hope the publishers will come to their senses very soon.
