I would give this 100000 stars if I could
This book is great because it talks about native americans from the past and from today. It is a good book to get if you like native americans,Kaya fan or not.

would have given it more stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is by far one of the best world books in the American Girls Collection. It fills in all the gaps left by the series. It is full of Nez Perce lore, history, traditions, and compares the old ways of the Nez Perce with the new ones. It explains everything from how the Nez Perce got thier horses to the smallpox epidemic to the stories about Coyote. Just about everything that the books left unexplained is in here. This book is well worth your time. I recommend it highly if you love the American Girls Collection, whether or not you are a fan of Kaya. It is worth the $16.95 you pay for it!!!!!!!!!

Good book, Worth the money!!!
This book gives the reader good idea of where to go in Alaska if you using the highway system as your primary transportation method. The book is grouped by each Highway (Dalton, Glenn, etc) and each sub-area within that highway as to how well you can expect to do while prospecting in each area.
The Author has rated each sub-area (Creek/River System) between 1 and 3 stars. Each area lists if you can only pan, or use a sluice, dredge, etc. Times of the year that you are permitted to dredge, etc. It also lists the type of gold you are likely to find. (fine, course, nuggets, etc.)
I haven't used the book in actual practice yet, but plan to this summer. I would say that from what I have read that it is well worth the money.

Good book, Second addtion is needed.

Pull on your cartharts, cork boots and fannel shirt
I found this book in my youth ministers office after he moved out. Evidently, it was a gift and obviously it was never read. Ready to give it the heave-ho into the trashcan, I paused and looked at it again. Am I glad it did- it is a delightful book.

It is a collection of short stories about the history of the Pacific Northwest up to the early twentieth century. A third generation Oregonian, thought I knew Northwest history, but this book filled me in a side of history never taught in school. For instance, Holbrooks tells us of outlaw Jim Turnow who he describes as the most crafty and dangerous man ever to roam the timbered reaches of the Pacific Northwest- a cold blooded killer who had a reign of terror in Grays Harbor. Compare this killer to the story of Miss Fern Hobbs, a twenty-five year old, 104-pound secretary to Governor West, who single handily disarmed and brought peace to lawless mining town of Copperfield Oregon. By far, my favorite story is about The Death and Times of Joshua the Prophet. A charismatic leader who lead astray the women of Corvallis Oregon, the ending of this story is both surprising and tragic.

Holbrook takes us to another time and to another culture. His prose is beautiful; it is a work of art. So put on your cartharts and cork boots and fannel shirt and tin hat, this is a great read. Even if you are not from the Pacific Northwest, you will be captivated by these stories. Buy this book and place it in your guest room. Your guests will thank you for a great read.

Logging, Hell-raising and other Northwest Stuff
This is an anthology of some of Holbrook's mid-1900's articles about the development of the NW around the turn of the last century. Holbrook's prose is easy-reading but carries well-researched along with humor and style. Each chapter is a treat!

If you haven't read Holbrook before, who should I compare him to?..... Well, if Ken Burns was primarily a writer, I think that he might produce similar stuff.

There is a bonus in the introduction. The editor's lengthy piece fills us in on who Stewart H Holbrook was and is fascinating reading in itself.

This writer's work deserves further resurrection.

Extraordinary: Overwhelmingly Wonderful
The research here is remarkable. The scholarship is first-rate, the information exhaustive (although never definitive since world music grows with leaps and bounds moment by moment).

I love dipping into this attractively illustrated, logically organized, and utterly helpful guide to find whole realms of sound which I not only didn't know existed but also could not even have imagined existed without the help of these fine fans of the music about which they write so clearly and well.

The world today is a depressing place. Sorrow is everywhere one turns. But this celebration of music continually energizes and revivifies. Buy it; enjoy it; and expand your CD collection.

Everything V. 1 was for Middle-East, African, & European ...
... this one is for Latin & North American, Caribbean, Indian, Asian/Pacific idioms. I picked up the original '94 edition to explore World Beat rhythms in improvisatory settings, and was excited to hear the new edition would cover two volumes. I am NOT displeased !!

Truly inspirational
I bought this book in 1981 and it changed my life. No kidding. After I read it I moved to Florida, bought a 33 foot sailboat and spent the next 6 and a half years sailing around the world myself. My only regret was that I never met the author along the way although I met others who had. So if you are looking for a book that accurately describes the beauty, awfulness and sometimes frightening aspects of sailing a small boat around the world, this is the definitive book. First class.

Great story of a young couple who sailed around the world.
I have read this book more than once. It the well told story of a young couple from the arctic who purchase a small wooden sailboat in England and sail it around the world on a five year voyage. They don't know much about sailing or traveling when they begin their journey. It is an, often times, humorous story about their experiences learning to travel under sail. It is full of wonderful stories about the people they meet and the sights they see along the way. Even non-sailors should love this story.

What it was like for kids to live during World War II
"World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities" really has three key components. First, there is a history of World War II from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Second, Richard Panchyk provides excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by troops on both sides along with personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war. Finally, there are 21 activities that can show young readers how it felt to live through World War II, both on the battlefield and on the Home Front.

Actually, the first function is the least impressive part of "World War II for Kids," although Panchyk provides a solid history of the war. It is just that the personal writings and recollections, along with the activities, are where Panchyk goes beyond what you would find in your standard American history textbook, which is why this is an excellent supplemental volume. Teachers can certainly use the activities and quote from the letters found in this volume to give students more of a sense of what it was like to live during that time.

The 21 activities are fairly interesting and cover a variety of subjects. Some are fairly complex, such as substituting a potato for an incendiary bomb and following the instructions on how to extinguish it, or staging a radio adventure program, while others are relatively simply, such as drawing a recruiting poster. There is an exercise in code breaking, learning how to camouflage, making a ration kit, going on a reconnaissance mission, figuring oat a coastal defense, the physics of dropping bombs, and a game that helps demonstrate the difference between mortar and howitzer fire versus anti-tank and anti-aircraft fire. There are also "Home Front" activities like making a bandage, putting together a care package, growing a Victory Garden, sending V-Mail, and extending butter, as well as a couple of activities having to do with the Holocaust by making a Jewish star and trying to find good hiding places in your home for the student and an adult helper.

Obviously some of these activities are going to be more practical and more beneficial than others, but Panchyk has made an attempt to come up with different ways of giving his young readers an idea of what it was like for kids and adults during World War II. Again, while young readers can certainly read this book and try the activities on their own, "World War II for Kids" is even better suited as a resource for teachers to use when teaching the pivotal events of World War II. Comparing what life was like for their grandparents during that war as opposed to the rather limited impact on their lives today during the war on terrorism could be quite an eye opener for young readers.

7 year old loves this book
My 7 year old son is a WWII fanatic and loves this book. It discusses not only events in the war itself, but also the impact of the war on life in the U.S. The activities encourage kids to think about far-reaching effects of war, not just the exciting battles.

Useful for gardeners everywhere - especially small gardens
When this book first came out in 1987, it transformed the idea of "gardening" (previously in my mind the purview of elderly aunts and cranky bachelors) to something that I, myself, could play at -- "play" being a most important word when other responsibilities pressed fast and hard. Ann Lovejoy's light-hearted reporting on happenstance in her little (35 foot wide by 60 foot deep) lot stirred me to think that something beautiful could happen just outside my own front door. In this little book, organized helpfully (for maritime Pacific Northwest readers) by month, one chases the heady scent of the possible.

We have long since moved from our capacious lots in the Northwest to an unpromising tiny scrap of land in Zone 5 (if we're lucky) at about 5,000 feet (the altitude being something that can contribute to bad luck for gardeners). Surprisingly, I find myself turning again to this first book of Ann Lovejoy's, even though much of the specific data does not pertain. Here's what is so engaging. First, you will not find a more practical book about the vagaries of gardening on a postage stamp lot shared with cats, children, and the inevitable surprises of urban life. Second, some of the information translates beautifully across zones; see, for instance, her lovely idea about moonlight on white roses. Besides which, her homage to "Just Joey" pre-dated its award as favorite by many years. Finally, her enthusiasm infects the reader, sends her students out in search of their own tiny scrap of gardening paradise.

Here is a durable and informative guide to finding fulfillment on the tiniest plot, against what you thought were the odds of finding success in the garden.

Color for your Northwest Garden Every Month
A how-to book broken down month by month. Advice from a Seattle native on how to add color to your garden. The book is fun and takes you beyond the usual Northwest gardenscape. Did you know that the winter foliage of azaleas can be as spectacular as their Spring blooms?
