The way it really wasRoot's Benny Peoples presents a truly honest view of the way it was during WWII at home and in the war. A time of innocence and patriotic fervor. The characters are palpably real. The do and say things I think I remember. The story moves forward and moves the reader. A good read.
A Star For Benny PeeplesBenny is a wonderful character that would have been worth knowing. Mr. Root's has a fine sense of character development that made me want to know what Benny and his family would be doing in certain situations. I am looking forward to a sequel. Excellent work Eldon! Thank you for a fine read.

A classic, beautiful bookPeople will be framing the artwork from this book fifty years from now. And it's one of my son's favorite books. Great for reading aloud, one of the books you keep reaching for. A classic story, well told and beautifully rendered with images that are faithful to the actual traditions and styles of the Haida and Tlingit people. So it's not just "mind candy" -- it's an introduction to a culture.
I simply fell in love with the artwork and its young hero.Paul O. Lewis does a great service to children by using a scholarly approach to his young hero. Giving us not only rich and evocative artwork
but portraying the ancient tale of the mythic
hero with fresh and innocent eyes is a wonderful
gift. Readers seeking the beauty of a children's
book that provides an uplifting experience and
faithful cultural feeling will fall in love with this
book just as I have. -V.S.

Visual feast and rich tales about a fascinating thoroughfareSunset Boulevard lives large in legend and lore (did I say that?), and this book presents myriad facets of the long and meandering street, one of the most famed in America. From interesting anecdotes (including the story of how an entire school was buried beneath what is now Dodger Stadium) to hundreds of elucidating and entertaining photos and illustrations, some historical and many contemporary, the book is a compelling and engaging treatise. While some of the subject matter isn't of inherent interest to me, the author's writing pulled me in to many a tale, and rewarded my attention handsomely. The maps and address/phone information are useful for touring the boulevard and its many neighborhoods, as listings present to the visitor and native alike lots of places to eat, drink and otherwise acculturate. Sunset Boulevard itself is, of course, but one stretch of asphalt, but there's a wealth of history -- and plenty of current interest -- that lies along its 23-mile length.
An astonishing story and a captivating readFrom start to finish, this remarkable book captures the essence of the legends that have shaped both the lore and the reality of Los Angeles. Sunset Boulevard literally crosses the heart of Los Angeles, touching along its route to the Pacific Ocean many neighborhoods that define the city's diversity and drama both past and present. This book culls stories of the past and ties them to the present, explaining every step of the way how Sunset Boulevard helped make Los Angeles what it is today. The maps of each neighborhood show both present-day landmarks as well as those gone-but-not-forgotten. Each chapter is devoted to a specific neighborhood along the 23-mile route and contains lists (including, happily, addresses and phone numbers!!) of restaurants, museums, nightclubs and hot shopping sites worth visiting. All in all, this is a book for both tourists and locals alike.

IndispensableThis book was one of the first that my wife and I bought upon coming to California in 1980. It has since fallen into at least ten pieces from overuse. This new version is also excellent.
There is a level of detail throughout that we appreciate, providing an interesting, experienced viewpoint and guide. We also like the way the different regions are highlighted. Sometimes we just head off to one of the regions and find a trail that looks interesting.
Enjoy!
Best Tahoe area hiking guideThe fourth edition of this book is a vast improvement on the initial release (3 editions ago). If you are looking for a complete trail guide to the Tahoe Basin, this is the one you want.

Backpackers CompanionI bought three different editions of this book. The first one fell apart from use "1974". I lost the second book around Lake Alpine. The latested edition got soaked this year, 2003, in the Mokulmne River. Very useful information, excellent writing. I highly recommend Thomas Winnett's Tahoe-Yosemite Trail.

RecommendI've used this guide on every leg described in the book and it was dead on (1988 - 1996). The summit creek area description was helpful since that section wasn't well marked. Is much better than USGS maps. Definitely recommend. 259 Top of the line.

What an amazing cookbook!A friend lent this book to my partner and me. We looked through the recipes and couldn't find one we wouldn't make. As cooking afficianados who buy a number of cookbooks a year, this is by far the best resource we've found!
This book is filled with wild & delicious recipes. What a great book! I've tried about a dozen recipies so far and they are all superb. The Jerk Chicken Recipe on page 67 is so wonderful we have made it several times. My lips felt like they were blown up to 50 PSI but I couldn't stop eating it. The Island Roasted Chicken with Thyme Mustard Sauce is another unforgettable meal. Ground Nut Stew, Black Bean Soup, and Papaya,Mint,Coconut Soup are also memorable. This is a "Must Have" book.

Very good recipes, easy to work fromHave used this from a friend. Am so sad that it is not available anymore. It should be republished so many more people can enjoy it!
IncredibleI just returned from the Islands yesterday and couldn't wait to open my cookbook I purchased a few years ago.. I have made many many recipes from this book and I am always amazed at how great the recipes turn out. I would love to see another edition come with some recipes from some of the newer resturants.Aloha and Mahalo

Dead Celebrities RULE!If you're headed to Hollywood and don't believe in corporate pre-determined tourist traps grab this book! Lots of cool places to visit that aren't owned/run by Universal, right down to the spot where Baretta made his last hit! Maybe you'll even see Huggy Bear. And did you know that that crackwhore Pia Zadora leveled Pickfair? You will if you read this guide. Cool stuff.
An Excellent Guide to Hollywood's Sordid PastThis is a great guide for anyone who is interested in the scandals, murders, suicides and hauntings of the Los Angeles area. The information is detailed and accurate, and there are several maps which are good enough that even someone who is not familiar with the area can navigate easily. The book also contains maps to celebrity graves in many area cemetaries. This book is excellent for those who may be visiting LA and want to see some unusual sites; it is also interesting for people who have always lived in LA. Maybe you live next door to the house where Clara Bow "entertained" the entire USC football team and don't even know it! If you're not into the morbid stuff, the book also contains the locations of many sites used in TV and movies. I should also mention that I have found that this latest edition is only readily available from Amazon or directly from the author, so don't go looking for it in your local bookstore.

Great Kids BookThis is one of the best written, most comprehensive and accurate children's books about Alaska that I have found. The illustrations are well drawn and clever. This book holds the interest of young children and I would recommend it as a great addition to any young child's library.
Great educational book!I was given this book by my aunt who moved to Point Barrow, Alaska to be a teacher there. She gave me this book to teach me about where she was to be living. This book taught me a lot in a very educational way. I highly recommend it, The pictures are great too!!

Close to a GPS for so much lessBeing new to the bay area need not be daunting anymore. With this book in hand, you can go anywhere you want. All you need is an address. And since the map is in separate A4 size pages, it is very easy to look at different sections at the same time. No need to fold and unfold, no need to be worried about its getting torn.
The maps also have a lookup based on the house numbers. It will be the best investment you will have made in a long long time.
Thomas Bros.--Invaluable tool for the terminally lostIf you live in the Bay Area, the Thomas Bros. map book "Metropolitan Bay Area" is the one volume to keep by your side. It covers just about every single town and street between San Jose and the North Bay. If you're among the terminally lost, this is the book to have...forget those map web sites!
