A review of the history of the scientific press
Selected in 2003 for the American Philosophical Society's prestigious John Fredericks Lewis Award, Specialist Control: The Publications Committee Of The Academie Royale Des Sciences (Paris), 1700-1793 by James E. McClellan III is a unique study of that point in the history of science when scientists first gained control over the publication of their research findings. A review of the history of the scientific press, specifically in the eighteenth century and concerning the remarkable Paris Academy of Sciences, brings to light a turning point in the way mankind would view the world and disseminate information gleaned through methodical inquiry. No academic library History of Science collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of Specialist Control!

A Poignant and Passionate Story
Mr. Jepperson states that The War of the Mormon Cow "is written in the meter and structure of the Sioux language, as Crazy Horse would have told it." The rhythm of said writing has a profound emotional impact. While I have little knowledge of the Sioux Indians, I know the outcome, and it ain't good. This book gave me hope. I have never read a story as seen through Sioux eyes and I found myself hoping that the Sioux would march on in victory! At the very least, I have been inspired to learn more about the first inhabitants of America.

While the story revolves around Curly (later Crazy Horse, a great Sioux leader) and Little Mouse (later Black Robe Woman), and their coming of age in tumultuos times of war with settlers marching through their homeland, I was impressed with the interdependence and respect between the Americans and the Sioux. I read, hoping that surely they could work it out!

So many stories about settlers and Indians are made up solely of "Good vs. Bad." Mr. Jepperson's story vividly portrays the good and bad on both sides. He describes great Sioux warriors - - made up of both men and women - - fighting to maintain the only life they knew, and of settlers who, out of ignorance, fear, and greed, took the Indians for granted (that's putting it mildly.)

There were no winners in the destruction of the Sioux. The War of the Mormon Cow is the beginning of a sad, thought provoking story, told with tremendous power. The story is sprinkled with beautiful images of Sioux at work and play in day to day life. A lifestyle from which we should take notes and from which we can still learn. A child's/teenager's book? Yes. Worth reading by adults? Absolutely! I can't wait for the second installment!

Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Vol. 1, Pt. 1)

British parliamentarian and soldier Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) conceived of his plan for Decline and Fall while "musing amid the ruins of the Capitol" on a visit to Rome. For the next 10 years he worked away at his great history, which traces the decadence of the late empire from the time of the Antonines and the rise of Western Christianity. "The confusion of the times, and the scarcity of authentic memorials, pose equal difficulties to the historian, who attempts to preserve a clear and unbroken thread of narration," he writes. Despite these obstacles, Decline and Fall remains a model of historical exposition, and required reading for students of European history.

"Enthralling, Lucid, Eloquent...An Intellectual Edifice"
Dero A. Saunders abridged edition of the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" enhances the already elucidating and comprehensive full volume set sketched by Gibbon, and adds a precise tone to make this edition a quick and fulfilling read. At proscribed intervals throughout this work, Saunders summarizes portions of Gibbon's original volume, and successfully renders a "magnum opus" accessible for busy students and readers in general. The latter half of Gibbon's original work - after the sack of Rome - is composed of excerpts deemed necessary for a better understanding of the Empire's condition after the fall; and consists of: the age of Justinian, the rise of Islam, the fall of Constantinople, the ruins of Rome, and Gibbon's conclusion to the work as a whole. The breadth of this work brims with irony and a captivating charm that pervasively treats the vicissitudes of the Roman Empire with a witty candor. This is a timeless classic and a must have for anyone intersted in late Roman and Christian antiquity. It took a bit of courage on my part to give this excellent book four stars, but a few things must be considered. First of all, Gibbon wrote this history through a reformation lense and shamelessly exhibits his sentiments towards a history that was strictly catholic. Constantine is looked at with disregard and even indiffernce, while latter Julian the Apostate - the enemy of Christianity - is praised for his intelligence and valor. Hardly something I would expect from a christian historian. Also, as I said earlier, this edition is made accessible for busy students and readers; not historians and scholars. So for those who wish for a more in-depth and comprehensive approach to Gibbon's work, I would suggest the whole set. But for anyone who wishes to find a precise edition with all the essentials, undoubtedly Dero A. Saunders is the best.

STILL HOLDS UP IN MOST REGARDS EVEN AFTER 2 CENTURIES
I always loved Roman and Byzantine history, so it was only a matter of time before I "knew" I had to read this. Like most of you I had heard a lot of modern authors and historians condemn Gibbon but I found him to be very entertaining and informative. Unlike the genius below who POSTED HER PSAT SCORES, I liked his writing style. It's obvious that the FLOW of history is important to him. I especially enjoyed the chapters in the first book about early Christianity - he actually takes a very harsh view that was very refreshing. His storytelling is superior to all others and this book is rightfully considered among the best works of the English language.

However, Gibbon does have some drawbacks- though it wasn't his fault. The Byzantine Empire, Slavs, Bulgarians, etc all get shafted by Gibbon. It's understandable since at the time this work was written, Byzantine study was not given serious thought. Overall a 5 star book! For Byzantine history I would recommend Procopius, Psellus, or "Romanus Lecapanus and his Reign" by Sir Steven Runcimen. Can't go wrong with those!

A magistrally written sequel
Edward Gibbon is the most talented British historian of all times and "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" is his acclaimed masterwork, an opus which should be included in whatever list of the 100 most important literary works of all times. The first three books, elegantly featured on a velvet green cover and boxed together in picturally attractive white cardbox, cover the decline and fall of the so-called Western Empire, seated alternately in Rome or Verona in Italy in the end of the V century A.D., and I read it with respect and awe in no more than a month (see the pertinent review). The sequel, again presented with all the elegance the opus deserves, is composed of three voluminous books, totalling again some 2.000 pages and covering the period after the fall of Rome to the barbarians of the Visigoth Allaric and others, where the power and the Empire has moved its see to Constantinople (Byzantium) in the East. The Crusades and the likeness of the prophet Mohamed are there, although from the preconcept and biased view of a retrograde XVIII English colonizer who likened the Arabs to savages and women to a second class position in society.
This second series of book is as good and lenghty as the first series, something which is in itself an almost unattainable goal to any sequel such as this, and Gibbon has once again the reader's attention suspended on a perpetual state of anxiety, always looking forward to read in the next sequence of words a point of view or a descriptive text magistrally written about human boldness and courage in the event of victory, or else the picture of the frailties of human soul when facing impending danger. His polemical portrait of Empress Theodora (according to him a former prostitute) is unequaled to anything written before or after him, specially the part where it was to her that the fleeing emperor Athanasius owe the maintenance of his wavering will and his imperial rule.
The erudition of Edward Gibbon is unparalelled and he unassumedly cites many ancient writters in Greek, Latin, French and other languages, letting solely to the reader the not so easy task of translating it into English. His English is elegant and unexpected and the avail of a handy good English dictionary of archaic words will be a helpfull tool to the reader. His sources are profuse and diversified and whenever he has the opportunity, he traces the parallel of ancient history with contemporary and imperial England in the making.
In my opinion, the misconcepts of some of his views notwithstanding, this is one of the most important works concerning the fall of Rome ever done and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Very informative
This book gives a good and detailed explanation of the the human skeletal structure. The type and function of a joint, the funtions of the ligaments arount a joint, the functions of the muscles around a joint. Not only do the authors explain how each and every joint specifically works but also how the joints work together to do a specific movement along with which muscles are involved. This is a book for anybody interested in studying the musculoskeletal system in detail.

very very good^^
I am a physical therapist in KOREA. I recommend this book to therapist in the world!

This whole series is terrific for both kids and adults
I'm surprised this series was allowed to go out of print here....I think it's still available in England and maybe elsewhere.

The first book seems slightly different from and even inconsistent with the rest, maybe because the author hadn't developed the characters fully yet. However, it's still as good-it's hard to say which are the best, they're all great.

The Bagthorpes are an eccentric family of geniuses-make that genii-except for Jack, who is incurably ordinary. In the first book he causes a lot of trouble by trying to get noticed; in the others he mostly lets the rest of the family wreak their own havoc, and they do very well. There's Grandma, the trouble-making matriarch who cheats at very game she plays; dreamily poetic Aunt Celia, who's never quite of this world; Celia's daughter Daisy, who is allowed to set fires, write on the walls, and conspire with her imaginary friend Arry Awk; and Mr. Bagthorpe, the bitter, tormented television script writer.

The things they survive (including Fire and Flood and a Haunted House) make for hilarious reading, not to mention lots of great quotes. The tone of the books is a delightful combination of endlessly droll and deadpan/detached.

VIVA Bagthorpes!
How COULD they have stop printing these books? I have loved the Bagthorpes since I first got Ordinary Jack as a kid and wanted to get the Bagthorpe series for my niece and friends who are having children. Even though I was labeled "gifted" as a child, Jack is readily identifiable and the books are written with such a gentle humor that they are well worth fighting for.

Really, are we supposed to let "Sweet Valley High" set the tone for our pre-adolescents?

The first in a hilarious series
If P.G. Wodehouse had been writing novels for young readers during the last quarter of the 20th century, he might have come up with something like "Ordinary Jack," the first in Helen Cresswell's series The Bagthorpe Saga. Jack, a hopelessly conventional and normal boy stuck in the middle of the madcap, eccentric Bagthorpe family, known for their prodigious achievements, wonders how he can ever get himself noticed. Uncle Parker, not so brilliant himself, sympathizes and comes up with a plan: Jack will become a prophet and go in for such mystical pursuits as visions, water divining, crystal-ball gazing and Tarot-card reading. Of course, all sorts of complications and much hilarity ensue. This very funny book and its six sequels can be found in British paperback editions and ordered from Amazon.co.uk.

Picture Book
I bought the book for reference in building a model of a late war Elco 80'. I was disappointed in what I got for my $40. It is indeed a picture book. It contains page after page of original construction drawings of dubious worth, and some photos I had not seen before. Looking though the credits I was struck with the thought that it appeared as though the author had just published everything he could get his hands on from the PT Boat Museum. Color profile plates (read original material) of camoflage measures are absent. There is not much here that is not available from other less expensive books, and a little research by the truly interested. The organization of the book left alittle to be desired as well. The chapter titles could used a little more thought. Overal it struck me as a make money quick endeavor by publishing a ton of material available through government sources. Very little original synthesis of the material was done. This volume is more like a scrapbook.

Excellent Pictoral History
Vic Chun has done an outstanding job of bringing together brief histories of PT Boats from each theater. The book is well researched. He covers all makes and manufacturers. Some information has been included on the elusive subject of PT Boat camouflage. Highly recommended for the PT Boat enthusiast.

PT Boat Enthusiast! Two Thumbs Up!
I've bought several of these books for my uncles who served in the Navy during WWII. They loved it! They told me this was one of the best books on PT Boats out there. I liked it because I don't know a lot about these boats and I found it informative and my uncles know a lot about these boats and found it informative too. One of my uncles especially liked the cut out designs - because he has been making models of several boats and he used this book to help him make a PT.

Confused
I bought this book a few months ago. I have found it to be very clear and well organized. I'm enjoying learing Sanskrit very much. I also bought Coulson's book and I am a bit confused as to the differences in the devanagari scripts used in the books. Both claim to be teaching Classical Sanskrit so I don't understand why there are such huge variations. I've tried to find explanation for this on the Internet and other places, but I can't seem to find one.

Introduction to Sanskrit--Part One
This was an excellent introductory book on Sanskrit. It was obviously written by someone experienced in teaching Sanskrit, and sensitive to student input. It was easy to follow and repetitive enough to give the beginning student a certain sense of mastery as each new piece of information would build on the last. I highly recommend it for any beginning student who may have found the Colson text entirely too overwhelming and confusing.

clear and simple
Originally I had picked up Coulson's intro sanskrit book. I found it very difficult to understand, and as a result I gave up on learning Sanskrit. When I received Engenes book, I felt releived and motivated because it was so clear and simple. When your learning a new language, it is important to keep things simple and to work in baby steps. Engens book is simple and clear!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR
I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

Even better than The Hobbit -- Inglis is a master!
In my review of Rob Inglis' reading of The Hobbit, I said it seemed to take me a little while to get into his vocalizations, even though I'm a big fan of audio books (especially those read by a British voice).

The Fellowship of the Ring, however, I fell in love with immediately. Rob Inglis' style is perfect for this book. He does the voices well and the story is far richer and more engrossing than that of The Hobbit. (Even though The Hobbit is delightful and unique in its own right.)

There really isn't much I can say about these Lord of the Rings audio books that hasn't already been said. This CD edition of The Fellowship of the Ring read by Shakespearean actor Rob Inglis is perfect for you if:

1. You love The Lord of the Rings
2. You're intrigued by all the pre-movie hype and you'd like to discover what Tolkien's book is really all about
3. You have a lot of drive time on your hands and you'd like to fill it with something entertaining and intelligent
4. You can't stand listening to insipid Top 40 or Talk Radio programs
5. You love listening to the British dialect
6. You just want to have a good time hearing one of the greatest novels ever written read to you by a professionally trained actor who makes each character come to life.

The sound quality on these CDs is, as it was on The Hobbit, superb. The recording level is perfect. The pace of the reading is just right. I'm about halfway through right now and I'm looking forward to every minute of it.

This edition is a very good value for the price.

A Beautiful Start
"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the start to what is probably the most loved epic fantasy series ever written. From the first pages when Bilbo Baggins makes his secret departure from Hobbiton, you are drawn in to this lush story. Tolkien tells a wonderful story and is able to do that while keeping the reader hooked from page 1.

"Fellowship" is the start of the trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings." In this first installment, Bilbo Baggins leaves Hobbiton and leaves The One Ring in the hands of his cousin, Frodo Baggins. When gandalf the Grey tells of brewing trouble the Hobbit says he's going to move to Buckland. He departs on a quest that will change his life forever. He takes along friends Sam, Merry, and Pippin. The hobbits finally reach Rivendell and an important counsel is held. This is the point in the book where the plot starts to skyrocket. To tell you any more on the plot would most likely ruin your reading.

Tolkien's detail on nature and history is astounding and only makes the novel even greater. He is always describing the surroundings and I just couldn't get enough of it. Some may not like this detail because they say Tolkien just drags on and on. This couldn't be furthur from the truth. His detail only adds to this beautiful story.

For those of you that are interested in reading this book because you loved the movie need to know what you are getting into. This is the start of one of the biggest and best fantasy epics of all time. Don't think that you're going to be opening a book that anybody can handle. That is not the case. Only people that are willing to make a commitment to a fabulous and sometimes complicated novel should buy this.

"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the start to what is most likely the best fantasy epic of our time. There is not enough that one could say about such a riveting novel. I strongly recommend this to anyone that is interested in a wonderful fantasy that is willing to make a commitment. The best thing about "The Fellowship of the Ring" is that there are two more novels that come right after it.

Happy Reading!

Sex and Back Pain

Pretty basic
Not a lot of content here- big type, lots of repetition. Says in about 100 ways that back pain may limit your sexual activity and don't feel guilty about it. Duh! There is some practical advice on positions and techniques, but mostly stuff you'd figure out yourself through trial and error. Some good content on what can cause back pain.

Useful and informative. Highly recommended!
This is a useful and informative book, written by a highly regarded and respected physical therapist. We have multiple copies of this book in our clinic, and I recommend it to our patients whenever appropriate. The feedback I have received from our patients has been very positive.

Gives realistic, and easy to follow help!
As a Librarian who selects books for a living, I saw this book, and had to give an Amazon review on it! This is a simple to follow and well illustrated manual for those with back problems, male or female. The positions given are creative and truly helpful.
