A Poignant and Passionate StoryWhile the story revolves around Curly (later Crazy Horse, a great Sioux leader) and Little Mouse (later Black Robe Woman), and their coming of age in tumultuos times of war with settlers marching through their homeland, I was impressed with the interdependence and respect between the Americans and the Sioux. I read, hoping that surely they could work it out!
So many stories about settlers and Indians are made up solely of "Good vs. Bad." Mr. Jepperson's story vividly portrays the good and bad on both sides. He describes great Sioux warriors - - made up of both men and women - - fighting to maintain the only life they knew, and of settlers who, out of ignorance, fear, and greed, took the Indians for granted (that's putting it mildly.)
There were no winners in the destruction of the Sioux. The War of the Mormon Cow is the beginning of a sad, thought provoking story, told with tremendous power. The story is sprinkled with beautiful images of Sioux at work and play in day to day life. A lifestyle from which we should take notes and from which we can still learn. A child's/teenager's book? Yes. Worth reading by adults? Absolutely! I can't wait for the second installment!

"Enthralling, Lucid, Eloquent...An Intellectual Edifice"
STILL HOLDS UP IN MOST REGARDS EVEN AFTER 2 CENTURIESHowever, Gibbon does have some drawbacks- though it wasn't his fault. The Byzantine Empire, Slavs, Bulgarians, etc all get shafted by Gibbon. It's understandable since at the time this work was written, Byzantine study was not given serious thought. Overall a 5 star book! For Byzantine history I would recommend Procopius, Psellus, or "Romanus Lecapanus and his Reign" by Sir Steven Runcimen. Can't go wrong with those!
A magistrally written sequelThis second series of book is as good and lenghty as the first series, something which is in itself an almost unattainable goal to any sequel such as this, and Gibbon has once again the reader's attention suspended on a perpetual state of anxiety, always looking forward to read in the next sequence of words a point of view or a descriptive text magistrally written about human boldness and courage in the event of victory, or else the picture of the frailties of human soul when facing impending danger. His polemical portrait of Empress Theodora (according to him a former prostitute) is unequaled to anything written before or after him, specially the part where it was to her that the fleeing emperor Athanasius owe the maintenance of his wavering will and his imperial rule.
The erudition of Edward Gibbon is unparalelled and he unassumedly cites many ancient writters in Greek, Latin, French and other languages, letting solely to the reader the not so easy task of translating it into English. His English is elegant and unexpected and the avail of a handy good English dictionary of archaic words will be a helpfull tool to the reader. His sources are profuse and diversified and whenever he has the opportunity, he traces the parallel of ancient history with contemporary and imperial England in the making.
In my opinion, the misconcepts of some of his views notwithstanding, this is one of the most important works concerning the fall of Rome ever done and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This whole series is terrific for both kids and adultsThe first book seems slightly different from and even inconsistent with the rest, maybe because the author hadn't developed the characters fully yet. However, it's still as good-it's hard to say which are the best, they're all great.
The Bagthorpes are an eccentric family of geniuses-make that genii-except for Jack, who is incurably ordinary. In the first book he causes a lot of trouble by trying to get noticed; in the others he mostly lets the rest of the family wreak their own havoc, and they do very well. There's Grandma, the trouble-making matriarch who cheats at very game she plays; dreamily poetic Aunt Celia, who's never quite of this world; Celia's daughter Daisy, who is allowed to set fires, write on the walls, and conspire with her imaginary friend Arry Awk; and Mr. Bagthorpe, the bitter, tormented television script writer.
The things they survive (including Fire and Flood and a Haunted House) make for hilarious reading, not to mention lots of great quotes. The tone of the books is a delightful combination of endlessly droll and deadpan/detached.
VIVA Bagthorpes!Really, are we supposed to let "Sweet Valley High" set the tone for our pre-adolescents?

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR
Even better than The Hobbit -- Inglis is a master! The Fellowship of the Ring, however, I fell in love with immediately. Rob Inglis' style is perfect for this book. He does the voices well and the story is far richer and more engrossing than that of The Hobbit. (Even though The Hobbit is delightful and unique in its own right.)
There really isn't much I can say about these Lord of the Rings audio books that hasn't already been said. This CD edition of The Fellowship of the Ring read by Shakespearean actor Rob Inglis is perfect for you if:
1. You love The Lord of the Rings
2. You're intrigued by all the pre-movie hype and you'd like to discover what Tolkien's book is really all about
3. You have a lot of drive time on your hands and you'd like to fill it with something entertaining and intelligent
4. You can't stand listening to insipid Top 40 or Talk Radio programs
5. You love listening to the British dialect
6. You just want to have a good time hearing one of the greatest novels ever written read to you by a professionally trained actor who makes each character come to life.
The sound quality on these CDs is, as it was on The Hobbit, superb. The recording level is perfect. The pace of the reading is just right. I'm about halfway through right now and I'm looking forward to every minute of it.
This edition is a very good value for the price.
A Beautiful Start"Fellowship" is the start of the trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings." In this first installment, Bilbo Baggins leaves Hobbiton and leaves The One Ring in the hands of his cousin, Frodo Baggins. When gandalf the Grey tells of brewing trouble the Hobbit says he's going to move to Buckland. He departs on a quest that will change his life forever. He takes along friends Sam, Merry, and Pippin. The hobbits finally reach Rivendell and an important counsel is held. This is the point in the book where the plot starts to skyrocket. To tell you any more on the plot would most likely ruin your reading.
Tolkien's detail on nature and history is astounding and only makes the novel even greater. He is always describing the surroundings and I just couldn't get enough of it. Some may not like this detail because they say Tolkien just drags on and on. This couldn't be furthur from the truth. His detail only adds to this beautiful story.
For those of you that are interested in reading this book because you loved the movie need to know what you are getting into. This is the start of one of the biggest and best fantasy epics of all time. Don't think that you're going to be opening a book that anybody can handle. That is not the case. Only people that are willing to make a commitment to a fabulous and sometimes complicated novel should buy this.
"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the start to what is most likely the best fantasy epic of our time. There is not enough that one could say about such a riveting novel. I strongly recommend this to anyone that is interested in a wonderful fantasy that is willing to make a commitment. The best thing about "The Fellowship of the Ring" is that there are two more novels that come right after it.
Happy Reading!
