PM FASTrack: PMP Exam Simulation Software

Over 1300 practice questions. Similar to the actual test.
After comparing some of the most popular PMP preparation software programs, I found this software to be one of the better ones in the market. There are a few limitations to this software but in my opinion, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

The main advantage is that PM Fastrack takes a Process Group approach as opposed to a Knowledge Area approach and this alone can single-handedly influence whether you are going to pass the PMP. In addition, PM Fastrack is probably the largest repository of exam practice questions you can find in any product. I have looked at several products (software and books) and not found any that has more questions than this product.

The thing I liked the most about PM Fastrack is that the questions on the CD-ROM very closely resemble the actual test questions. The resemblence is in more ways than one - nature of questions, phrasing of questions, length etc. In a couple of instances, I even saw an exact repeating of the questions from this product. I don't know how it happened, but it did.

There are a few things I didn't like about the software. If you are into software development, you will instantly recognize that good HCI principles were NOT followed in designing this software. In one instance, I lost the results of 3 hours of work that I did because I clicked on a button that had misleading instructions. In case you are wondering, I am not new to using computer software.

But I am guessing you aren't looking for good HCI or usability when evaluating a software to buy that will help you pass the PMP. So, I think if you mentally prepare yourself for not liking these aspects of the software, then you may not find these problems as annoying as I did. Ignoring the disadvantages, you can't go wrong with this software in preparing for the PMP. The software is more useful if you use it along with 'PMP Exam Prep' by Rita Mulcahy also. Good luck with passing the PMP!

Very good test simulation tool !!
Gave me all the confidence I needed to take the exam. Didn't had to waste much time understanding the format of the exam. A very comprehensive set of questions. Helped me tremendously in passing the exam with 82.5% !!

The wording of the PMI exam questions was different. But looks like Rita Mulcahy's products had prepared me adequately to deal with it. I couldn't have passed the exam without all the practice this CD offered. I used PMP Exam Prep (4th Edition), and Hot Topics by Rita Mulcahy in addition to the PMBOK. Did not attend any classes.

Best PMP exam preparation tool
With about 1300 questions, this covers all the topics thoroughly and gives you the practice you need for the PMP exam. Best resource out there. Complements the PMP exam prep book. Provides simultated testing to give you the "real" exam feel.

The question in the book are included in this CD ROM.
If you buy this CD, you dont need to buy the other publication "Professional Responsibility and Situational Qanda: Sample Questions on the PMP Exam"

Great Preparation Tool
This is a very close simulation of the actual PMP test. By this I do not mean that you will see any of the same questions on the actual test, what I mean is that the questions will be of the same level of difficulty, phrased in similar terms, and covering the same subject matter in the same proportions. By taking many of the different practice tests I was able to pinpoint my areas of weaknesses, make them strengths, and then discover new areas of knowledge in which I needed work, slowly and steadily raising my grade with every practice test I took. To the credit of this method, I saw my grades increase by about 3 to 5 points with every test I took after studying, and the actual grade I achieved on the real test was just another point in the same upward slope.

The real test is extremely grueling, a test of stamina, focus, and knowledge, and I found the practice tests to reflect this very closely. Four hours might seem like a long time to be given for a test, but clearly reading and correctly answering 200 questions in that time is no easy task. Even though I considered myself a good test taker and had passed many certification tests in the last couple of years, I could never have passed the PMP test without the use of this excellent simulation software.

This works!
Great way to make efficient use of your study time. The answers to each test question, along with a full explanation, is available with one click. The immediate feedback made it easy to understand why the answer was wrong so the mistake didn't happen again. This was much easier than going back after a paper test, looking at the answer key, and digging up the explanation in a text. Using the software and the PMBOK, I aced this test after about 35 hours of focused study over a period of 4 weeks. The wording of the simulated test questions was very close to the real test. I highly recommend this software

Next level - improving the organizational capability
You can provide all the training your company can afford but if the organization doesn't embrace project management at every level performance will continue to suffer and the folks with all that new training will soon become disillusioned. Verzuh's new book outlines the issues you'll face in building a project centered enterprise that routinely adds value to customers and shareholders alike.

Verzuh has taken some of the best writing in project and program management, then added articles crafted in his honest, clear, to the point, style to fill in any gaps. The result is an excellent reader for those who care to help their business achieve the next level (and the next...) in project performance.

I've recently taken on several significant change efforts for major clients. I've found the chapters on: Enterprise Project Management: The Path to Maturity (12.), Integrating Project Management into the Enterprise (14), and Project Risk Management (6) particularly helpful in forming my approach. But as I look at this list I reflect on the fact that virtual teaming is giving one client a problem. Guess I better re-read Virtual Team Critical Success Factors (10). And I'm sure the other chapters will be needed before I'm done with this book. That's why others mention how dog-eared Verzuh's books become - because they provide assistance when you need it, and that's a value-added book you should have on your shelf - nope, it won't stay on your shelf, better make room for it right on the desk.

Thanks Eric, we needed this one.

Verzuh Does it Again
In almost every industry and profession, there is a growing reliance on Project management. This trend gives rise to a new term: the project-based organization.

This book is intended for their leaders. It takes an integrated approach to managing a project based organization. CIO's, department managers, program managers and senior project managers who are being challenged to formalize the processes of managing projects will find this compendium to be a source of strategies and standards for leveraging the discipline of project management across an organization.

Verzuh has assembled some the leading thinkers in project management to provide the reader with the theory, methods and framework to manage the project-based organization successfully. The collection includes essays from:
•Elaine Biech, President and Managing Principal, Ebb Associates
•Robert G. Cooper, President and cofounder, The Product Development Institute
•Denis Couture, President and cofounder, PCI Group
•Deborah L. Duarte, George Washington University
•Randall Englund, Associate, Strategic Management Group
•Robert J. Graham, Senior Associate, Strategic Management Group
•Ned Hamson, strategic innovation consultant
•Samuel J. Mantel Jr., Professor Emeritus, University of Cincinnati
•Jack R. Meredith, Editor in Chief, Journal of Operations Management
•Nancy Tennant Snyder, Vice President for Leadership and Strategic Competency Creation, Whirlpool Corporation
•Eric Verzuh, President, The Versatile Company
•Neal Whitten, President, Neal Whitten Group.

I particularly enjoyed Chapters 7 and 14. In Chapter seven Ned Hamson provides as concise an overview of quality, quality management and project management as I have found on the subject.

In Chapter 14, Eric Verzuh discusses integrating Project Management into the organization. In it, he argues that in the successful project-based organization project management disappears. Disappearing, he says, is not the same as ceasing to exist. The purpose of the project driven enterprise is not to hone project capabilities, it is to deliver products and services.

My copy of Verzuh's first book, The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management, sits dog-eared on my desk from constant reference. I will not be surprised if this, his second, soon starts to take on a similar appearance.

Getting Started in Project Management
If you are new to the field of Project Management this book is very helpful. It draws upon the accepted practices of the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) but is written more for those who don't want to learn directly from a text book style reading. The story follows a character named Sam and how he deals with his first exposure to project management. The flow of the book is very smooth as it takes you from basically describing what a project is, through the skill sets required to be a successful PM, and finally to the development of a Work Breakdown Structures and project planning techniques. This is a great quick read for anyone interested in project management as a profession, or who uses project management skills in their day to day jobs but don't have any guidelines.

Pm: A New Deal in Journalism, 1940-1948

A well written account of journalism and new deal politics
This book offers a unigue picture of journalism in the 1940's. PM attempted to write about hot topics of the day without being beholding to advertisers. They championed the causes of those with little power such as unions and minorities. Paul Milkman offers great insight into the way a radical publication such as PM gives us a unique view of politics in America in the 1940's. His sentences are frequently eloquent. This is not a boring history book. The text discusses the inner workings of the newspaper and how editorial decisions were made. This book is of interest to history buffs as well as journalists.

the best current edition of propertius in english
This edition is the best, although I have it on good source that Oxford will be publishing a Propertius even better than this sometime in the next year. Propertius' poetry has the most modern feel of any Latin poet; read him and understand why Pound et al. loved him so.

CUCINA AMORE (PM)

Author: Nick Stellino

Have not found a bad recipe
Nick Stellino is part shtik, part Italian storyteller, and, for the most part, a chef par excellance. I am a big supporter of PBS and obtained this book in an on-line pledge. There has not been a recipe in it which I have tried in which I have been disappointed. The anecdotes are interesting as well, although sometimes I doubt their validity. Anyone with a love of good food will love this book. Surprisingly, a number or them are easy to prepare as well.

A Must Have Cookbook
A friend of mine recommended this cookbook to me. She definitely did me a favor. Most of the recipes are easy to make using a handful of ingredients and the results are excellent. The pork tenderloin stuffed with prosciutto and provolone reminded me and my husband of food we enjoyed while in Tuscany a few years back. Simplicity with good quality ingredients is the name of the game in this cookbook. Enjoy.

A good investment for pasta lovers!
I received this book as a wedding gift 8 years ago and have tried many of the recipes. They are all great and easy to make. Some recipes sound a little complicated, but they really aren't. I just made the smoked salmon pasta and it was delish! It's the only recipe book that i treasure! Highly recommend.

Official Guide to Programming with CGI.pm

CGI.pm, a Perl library for writing CGI scripts, delivers elegant solutions for using and updating Web forms. The author, Lincoln Stein, realized the need for a clean and simple way to manage forms and--as a columnist for the Perl Journal, a scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and a Web-based software author--created that solution. He's (refreshingly) humble about this creative process, explaining that it took him a few steps until he realized the key to this HTML/Perl hybrid: simplicity.

The CGI.pm standard allows the site manager to separate data from its HTML markup for use in CGI forms. For example, all the elements in a short drop-down menu of vegetables can be placed in one array, changing this:

  • peas

  • broccoli

  • cabbage
  • to this:

    li(['peas','broccoli,'cabbage'])

to be used later throughout a Perl script.

The Official Guide to Programming with CGI.pm is geared toward a reader who is familar enough with Perl to have used modules and knowledgeable about HTML and Web-site design. Stein uses CGI.pm for tables, drop-down menus, guest books, single-page or multipart forms, image maps, and cookies. The author of both the book and Perl library function, Stein provides ample discussion of all of these areas, along with strong code examples. The book ends with a verbose reference guide detailing all of CGI.pm's functions and features, grouped both alphabetically and by topic.

The use of CGI.pm requires a mind shift for Web site managers, but it's one worth making. Instead of tags for 'input' and 'select', CGI.pm uses statements such as "checkbox ()" and "textfield ()," allowing documents to be read easily and updated quickly. --Jennifer Buckendorff

    Excellent text; questionable typography
I've enjoyed this latest book of Lincoln's, and recommend it highly. This is an interesting book with many good examples. I am happily using it as a text in my Programming the World Wide Web classes. This is one of very, very few books on CGI programming that use fluent Perl (Perl 5 constructs in particular) *and* up-to-date language features (CGI.pm, obviously). The only drawback of the book, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is that I think the typography is lousy. In particular, the font for the code samples is too light, and the excessive leading in general makes the book harder to read. The book has its share of first printing typos, but then again, mine had them too, so I can hardly complain about that. :-) Good work, Lincoln!

Excellent choice for anyone who wants to write Perl/CGI
Who better to write a book on the CGI.pm module than the author of the module himself. I must admit that I was afraid that the book wouldn't be intelligible given the fact that many brilliant programmers aren't necessarily gifted writers, but he pulled it off very well!

A basic knowledge of Perl is helpful in getting the most out of this book. I would strongly recommend reading at least the first few chapters of "Learning Perl" for people without any other programming skills, or the first few chapters of "Programming Perl" for those coming to Perl from another language.

I found that using this book in conjunction with "MySQL and Perl for the Web" gave me a great experience. Even though the latter book sounds like it is aimed more at the DB end, it has a couple good chapters on getting up and running with Perl/CGI and mod_perl. Was also quite thankful that Lincoln covered both the traditional and Object-Oriented interfaces to the module. Great Book!

    Great Book!
This book helped me make the transition to object oriented perl. Oh yeah, and it's filled with all the CGI you'll need. Thank you Lincoln Stein!!

    Boring!
I did not get much out of this book, and I do not think
it is a fair representation of what PSA really is. They seem
to focus on the technology represented by one particular
vendor's solution instead of an industry overview.

    Excellent book
PSA: Optimizing Project and Service Oriented Organizations is an excellent book, which provides today's executives with the kind of knowledge they need to really set themselves ahead of the game.
Very well written and easy to understand, the book is full of graphics, diagrams, figures and charts that explain basic concepts common to all PSA systems. I particularly like the PSA cycle diagram that demonstrates the various aspects of a powerful PSA solution...

Working in the services industry I can truly appreciate this type of reference book, mainly since it provides an overview of all of the important aspects to consider when evaluating PSA products. As well, it describes methods of avoiding difficulties that will come in the way of a successful PSA implementation. Another impressive and very useful part of the book is their professional services automation request for proposal template that addresses key questions in order to properly implement such a solution.

The authors share their six years expertise in the field by providing their view of PSA through real life experiences of veteran project managers, IT experts and business executives. I think this is the best book ever written about PSA, and from my understanding, the only book on this subject.

A must for everybody who is involved in the service industry.

Thorough, informative and practical - this book is GREAT
Thorough, informative and practical - this book is a great read. The authors have done a commendable job in addressing the topic of PSA solutions. The book provides the reader with a clear-cut roadmap for keeping your projects and services on track- from the initiation phase through completion.

What I liked most about the book was the fact that the concepts were presented in a way that could easily be understood. The most prominent factor that made this book so good and useful is that it offered an exceptional tutorial on successful project and service management through a PSA implementation.
