Index
Each disease mentioned contains information about key signs and symptoms, a basic description of the disease, illustrations, how the disease is diagnosed, potential consequences, information on treatment, and information on prevention.
The comprehensive index in the third edition is easy to use. For example, information on "scoliosis" can be found on pages 235, 603, 774, 980, and 981. (Page 980 features an illustration.)
There is also a complete listing of resources for more information including addresses, phone numbers and Web sites. I particularly like the section on symptoms. You can just look up a symptom such as "back pain" and learn more about conditions that cause back pain. The book then directs you to the page containing detailed information about that condition.
I'm looking forward to what I hope will be the interactive DVD version of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book in the future.

The Best Fish Identification Guide Available! The book begins with an introduction to fishes in the caribbean and the ecology of the reefs. A massive ID book is needed to identify fishes on the world`s second largest reef area.
Different from most other fish ID books,it is a rather special one that is dividing the fish into groups based on look rather than relationship. I`ll go through these groups one by one in this review.
ID group 1 is Disks/Oval,featuring some of my favourite fish, making a perfect beginning of the book.
Butterflyfish, angelfish, and surgeonfish can be found here.
Every description includes a short description of colors and gender differences,if any, distribution, family, size, depht and reaction to divers, and natural habitat.
The photographs are accompanied by b/w drawings of the silhouettes.
The second one is a rather large chapter, covering the silvery,stream-lined ocean hunters like barracudas, porgies, mojarras, dolphins, mullets, and the large predator cobia. Not very colorfull, but still majestic.
The 3rd chapter includes Sloping Head/Tapered body, with snappers and grunts as the main families. The grunts can be rather varied.
The 4th one includes Small Ovals, where the damselfish and chromis can be found. There are no anemonefish in the caribbean, but these are closely related to those. Also included here are the hamlets, which are all subspecies of one species.
These are very colorfull and cute little critters. The next chapter is Heavy Body/Large Lips, including the largest bony fishes here - groupers,of which the jewfish can weigh 900 pounds!
These are clumsy, but still charmy fishes. Except 30 species of those, the little fairy basslet, the most beautifull fish of the caribbean,is included here too, yellow and purple.
Swim with Pectoral Fins, which is ID group 6,includes the varied family of parrotfishes and wrasses, which are very colourfull. The Hogfish can also be found here, the character of the caribbean. ID group 7 introduces Reddish/Big Eyes, with the big-eyed squirrelfishes and the small, but beautifull cardinalfish.
ID group 8 treats the Small,Elongated Bottom-Dwellers,whose beauty is often underestimated, especially the cute gobies. The sailfin blenny is one of my favourites. Here,we can also find the yellowhead jawfish, which is a famous fish here too. Odd-Shaped Bottom Dwellers includes the toadfish and the funny-looking flounders & batfishes, who walks on their fins!I am very fascinated by the looks of the strange frogfishes. Odd-Shaped Swimmers (chapter 10) includes the pufferfish, which can fill themselves with air,and the funny-looking trumpetfish. Also found here are the boxfishes, who are covered with armor, except for their fins, eyes and mouth. They can have very beautifull colors. The triggerfish can be found too. They are colorfull, although agressive inhabitants of the coral reefs. So are their close relatives, the filefishes.
And finally, the cutest fish in the Caribbean, can also be found here. It is the little yellow porcupinefish, less than an inch in size. The famous jack-knife is also found in this chapter. It looks like a cross between a scalare and a chromis!
It is believed to be the juvenile form of the web burrfish.
The 11th chapter is the Eel Deal of the book. Here comes the snake eels, beautifull but mysterious bottom dwellers. And last, but not least, the venomous moray eels also lurks in this chapter. The 8-foot green moray is the most famous, while the most scary one is the viper moray with huge teeth!I love moray eels,so this is a paradise for me!
The final chapter "Sharks & Rays" deals with the ultimate UW predators. But not all sharks a fierce. In fact, the whale shark is one of the friendliest fishes in the world, reaching a size of 60 feet and harmless to everything but plancton! The nurse shark is also a character of the Caribbean. Other ones included here are the manta ray, lemon shark, mako shark (the fastest fish in the world)and the dangerous tiger & bull sharks.
This is a chapter I would have liked to expand a bit,but as many sharks are not reef dwellers,I understand why they did not included the great white and/or the Megamouth.
Over all,now I have gone through all chapters fastly, but you have to see this book to really enjoy it. When I go to the Caribbean or Florida,I will bring this book and see how many fish I can identify.
So go get it!

Show your PC who the BOSS really isPC Annoyances, does not focus on Windows alone, Windows and other Microsoft programs are in there, but this book offers fixes for everything from email, Virus, Netscape, downloading numbers to your cell phone, to how to get rid of telemarketers? The latter is "very clever" and works!
What I liked best about PC Annoyances are the links to fixes such as; http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm this site has a lot of really neat solutions to PC Annoyances, and there are many more listed in the book. I downloaded several utilities myself. One I discovered by reading the book was AM-DeadLink, this "freebie" went through my 2590 web addresses, yes you read correctly, in MS Internet Explorer, and found all the outdated, non working and duplicate ones, quickly and easily.
Got to love the Annoyance family/series of books, and in my opinion PC Annoyances at the current LOW Amazon.com price is not only the best of the litter, but an absolute must buy.
AND I THOUGHT I KNEW MY SYSTEM COLD...But Steve's book, like his PC World column, didn't fail to surprise me! It is everything that you expect from a typical O'Reilly publication: crisp, entertaining, and to-the-point. We cut to the chase pretty quickly: the annoyances, the solution, and some pretty nifty add-on humor if you are lucky. We get top-notch tips from spam control, to email management tricks, to virii solutions, to NAT woes, to some cool utility recommendations.
NOTES/CAVEATS:
(1) The book is relevant to Windows users only. Unless I have missed something, I doubt there is anything here for *nix/*nux or Mac users.
(2) It's a book you probably won't read from cover to cover, but it came pretty close to that for me. A handy little reference stacked with some tips I wouldn't have thought about.
(3) I wonder if there is much here that you couldn't find out yourself if you were game for a liberal dose of quality googling time, but it is pretty handy to have all this printed, pressed and neatly bound for 24-7 access between your fingers.
(4) Speaking of which, I felt at first blush that the price was a bit steep for a tech self-help book, but in hindsight it is worth every shining nickel!
(5) For a pretty good whiff of the book's style and content, check out the "Five More Annoying PC Annoyances" on O'reilly's website (google for it). I believe the site also has a sample chapter from this book unless they've removed it when you read this review.
All in all, I highly recommend this handy little volume for just about anyone who who pushes the START button!
Fixes, Tweaks, and ImprovementsThere are solutions, tips, and tweaks for countless problems regarding e-mail, internet, Windows, microsoft office, Explorer, music. . . . There are helpful e-mail addresses and phone numbers. The layout is clean and inviting. The material is concise and very understandable. Expect to chuckle. Beginners and experts can find answers to their PC problems, and the fixes and improvements really work!!

great for kids and parentsWilliam Joyce, who will be most familiar to folks as the creator of Disney Channel's Rolie Polie Olie. George too has his own series now, on PBS, and a spanking new
reprint of his original adventure.
The story here is fairly basic : George, suddenly three inches small, follows the instructions his parents left behind in a note, to clean up the house and watch his little
brother (now a BIG little brother). Along the way he avoids an ornery house cat and rides in a toy plane. Our kids favorite page features George scrubbing dirty
dishes by skiing down them on a sponge.
As with Rolie Polie Olie though, the story is secondary to Mr. Joyce's remarkable artwork. In Olie he manages to combine Art Deco with Futurism; here it's all
throwback. George Shrinks looks like a really hip version of the Dick and Jane books. A story with a miniature hero kids can relate to and illustration interesting
enough to hold adult attention--what more can you ask?
GRADE : A
Wonderful Book!A boy named George wakes up one morning to find that he is only three inches tall. He also finds a note from his parents with a list of chores he must do (which becomes Joyce's unique way of telling the story--the parent's note is the actual text of the book). The story follows George as he heroically navigates through the now gigantic house, evades the hungry house cat, and completes all his chores in very creative ways.
The illustrations, done in watercolors (though not pale and washy), are a mixture of highly realistic details (the house and surroundings), and a comic style (the characters). Included are several wordless full-page spreads of George flying a toy airplane which on their own are worth the price of the book.
If you can, buy the new large format of the book (November 2000 edition). The illustrations are much larger and the colors are more brilliant. The illustrations were probably rephotographed since the original edition is back from 1987 or so. (...) The newest version has a brand new cover illustration recently done by William Joyce.
Well, enjoy this book and happy shrinking!
terrific illustrations with sparse textSo begins this delightful book written and illustrated by William Joyce. George then begins to tackle the "To Do" list his parents have left him, though the chores are now monumentally more difficult since he is only a few inches tall!
The text is spare, being primarily the parents' list of things to do. What makes the book special are the accompanying color illustrations that show George tackling each of the (usually trivial) tasks. Kids will love seeing the challenges of being really small.
Lots of fun.

The book I should have bought my DadIf you or someone you know is new to using a PC this book is well worth having propped up against the monitor for easy reference. If you've been using a computer for a while then it's probably too simple for you, although I call myself an expert and I didn't know that TWAIN stood for "Technology Without An Interesting Name".
Don't judge a book by its cover! It is not as much for those who want to become "do-it-yourself computer gurus" and work on their computers as it is for those who want their computer and Internet connection to work reliably for them. Virtually no technical jargon is used and generally when a computer term is used it is clearly defined or explained.
The title also seems too restrictive. The book covers Internet issues as well as PC issues. "The Healthy PC" is an invaluable reference for both the computer and the Internet, but it is written in such a way as to be worth reading from start to finish as well.
In addition to explanations, definitions, helpful tips and background information, step by step instructions are provided which are fully illustrated with pictures of what the screen will look like at each step of each procedure.
Among the topics covered are ways to maintain and upgrade the computer, optimize performance and reliability of the PC and Internet connection, Internet issues (including safety, security and privacy), and much more.
The author suggests what to do when dealing with threats and annoyances such as viruses, hoaxes, worms, spam, and spyware in addition to e-mail software and firewalls.
We all know that if you look hard enough everything will have its positives and negatives. If I had to nitpick to find a negative, all I could come up with is timeliness, which is out of the author's control when dealing with publciction deadlines.
Reality, especially in the computer industry, changes fast enough that between the time a book is written and the time it is released, some information may become obsolete.
One example is a note on page 80 that states: "There is no alternative method to check your (AOL) email other than using the software provided by AOL or by visiting www.aol.com. As of the writing of this book it is not and has not been, possible to configure any dedicated email program...to work with AOL." That was true until recently when at least two dedicated email programs were released that can handle AOL mail as well as conventional email. Also the author uses AOL 8 rather than AOL 9 when referring to AOL.
Please understand that what was true yesterday may not be true today and what is true today may not be true tomorrow. All any author can do is describe a snapshot in time. The only thing that we know for sure is that everything will change. Possibly the publisher should consider annual updates on either a separate release or subscription basis for books such as this, which provide important information in a rapidly changing environment.
Carey Holzman has done a great job in providing tips, procedures, definitions, explanations, background and peace of mind to a much larger audience than is described on the cover.
Makes life simpleHow many times have you been reading a "How To" book and said to yourself "Now why didn't I think of that?" If your answer is "never" try reading this book so you can become familiar with the experience.
Don't expect in depth technical jargon that will leave your mind in a clutter. This book is more about taking care of one potential problem, then walking over to see if there is something that can be done about the next. Also don't expect to delve deep into the Windows OS and perform major surgery, instead you will find simple common sense approaches to improving the performance of your PC.

This book distinguishes itself from its most popular competitors by emphasizing the authors' opinions on hardware products. It's refreshing to see authors recommend Product A for high-performance systems in which price is not an issue, Product B for economical home systems, and Product C for organizational workstations. On the other hand, the recommendations, prices, and similar values will change over time. The authors maintain a great Web site, at which you can find their current recommendations. (The Web site, on the other hand, doesn't include the book's high-quality tutorial on designing and assembling a system from zero.) Even the photographs that appear in this book--traditionally a weak point among hardware books--are clear. --David Wall
Topics covered: Personal computers that comply with Microsoft Windows and Intel compatibility requirements. The authors address processors, memory, hard disks, optical media, removable magnetic disks, video cards, power supplies, and more. Also, there are instructions for assembling a machine from scratch, and some coverage of troubleshooting problems.

Comprehensive PC hardware guide with no BS
A wonderful book!

Outstanding ResourceI highly recommend this book. It will help you in friendships, with family, with romance, and at work. I recommend it even more for those who are in positions of leadership. Understanding yourself and then understanding those around you will radically change your life interactions for the better. FIVE STARS.
Simple, Helpful and Wonderful! Much-needed resource. After taking the quiz inside the book, I found that I am nearly all Powerful Choleric, with some Popular Sanguine and Perfect Melancholy thrown in for good measure. I was somewhat aghast to find that there is no Peaceful Phlegmatic in my personality (a fact that doesn't surprise anyone who truly knows me!).
Florence's book is entertaining, an easy read, and very valuable in it's insight. You won't find 'pigeon holes' in this book, for we are all a combination of multiple types of personalities (as I explained about myself above) but you'll definately gain a better understanding of your strengths and even some of your areas of challenge after reading this book.
I liked the flow of the book and the detailed descriptions of each personality type. As I read through the book, I could see parts of people I worked with and have known throughout the years, and it's definately helped my personal interactions with them.
Beware, you'll find yourself identifying parts of people's personalities on a constant basis once you read this book, but it's really fun once you get the hang of it. If you are a people person (or even if you are not) this book will become a much-used resource in your library.
When working with my image consulting clients, I often recommend they pick up a copy of this book and read it from cover to cover as part of developing their self-image and indeed, discovering more about their true selves. People often deny parts of their personalities, believing there is something 'wrong' or less than desirable about a particular strength that they have.
Florence's wonderful book will encourage all who read it to accept their individuality, while understanding more about what makes us the special and terrific creatures that we are.
A wonderful life changing experience
Plus it is small enough to keep in your coat pocket and packed full of useful information including drug dosing, pregnancy category, routes of metabolism and relative cost.
This book is a must purchase for those already in clinical practice and for students and residents.
