APPRECIATING THE WOMEN WHO CAME BEFORE US
REVIEW: The authors of WOMEN WHO BROKE ALL THE RULES illustrate the lives of women born during the baby boom era (1945-1955). A captivating story, read in a single sitting, about women who challenged existing social strictures by forging into professional fields previously closed to them. Most important for my generation to appreciate is the fact that they had to do so without the benefit of role models and mentors, which they now have become to those of us born in the 1960's. To hear how these ordinary yet exceptional women triumphed after immense struggles and conflicts they encountered in their lives, left me with a great sense of appreciation for what they went through personally, as well as,what they accomplished for women who have followed. This book should be required reading for both high schools and universities so that generations coming after the baby boom era can be reminded that the innumerable opportunities that exist today for women must not be taken for granted. Dr. Susan Evans and Dr. Joan Avis portray the lives of these women within the context of "Old Rules"--existing social constructs, and "New Truths"- the discoveries made when breaking the "Old Rules." This method perfectly illustrates the broad social impact of their individual acts of courage and their trail blazing spirits. The actions of these women literally forced society to think and act differently. I recommend and applaud this book and thank the women of the baby boom generation.

The authors absolutely captured my life on every page
I am one of the 100 women who were interviewed 5 years ago for this book. I didn't realize the in depth discovery of our generation. As a woman business owner, I didn't have a role model as women do now in the 90's.

This book gives insight into our every day lives and decisions of women of our generation. What fascinated me was that I could relate to every page. I have given away many of these books to close friends and childhood friends that I grew up with. We are all successful and made way for women in business and technology as well as other fields that were dominated by men.

Terrific!!!!

DeBeauvoir and the torchbearers
Evans and Avis have started to reconstruct the last chapters of Simone DeBeauvoir's book "The Second Sex." When I first read DeBeauvoir's book in 1973 I was dazzled by her essays, particularly 'Situation and Character' and the 'Formative Years.' Still, I recall being disappointed by the chapter on the 'Independent Woman.' It puzzled me that she didn't seem to have much to say that was new, fresh or interesting, and I was hungry for that examination. Perhaps too, my American sensibility expected a kind of formula on how to proceed. In retrospect, I have reconciled that women had neither succeeded nor failed on a public stage long enough for DeBeauvoir to have invoked a deeper analysis. This book makes an important contribution in beginning to record and analyze stories from this transitional group that the authors so accurately call the torchbearer generation. I think other readers would enjoy this book as much as I did.

biblical text on heart
it is amazing that such an authoritative text can actually be written. but there it is!. a masterpiece, which is so encompasing that words fail. braunwald has a tradition and every new edition is a towering giant over the previous.seeing is beleiving, thus i strongly recommend this text to any one wishing to perfect himself in any aspect of cardiology.

A HARD-TO-FLAW MASTERPIECE
Anyone familiar with Dr. Braunwald's superb cardiovascular exploits in the "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" would not be surprised by the richness of this book.
The diligently crafted chapters are comprehensive, authoritative, well-illustrated, and include all the 'ins' and 'outs' of contemporary cardiology. It is one of the most consistent and coherent multi-authored texts in the field.
This single-volume CD-ROM package is a rich blend of evidence based medicine, best practice, and all the user-flexibility an e-book enthusiast would expect.

the Bible of Cardiology
There are many authors that have mastered their subjects. Once in a while however, you come across some authors that have, in addition, mastered the art of imparting that knowledge to others. That is what you have in this volume that has become the indispensable resource for Cardiologists and cardiology fellows. What Harrison's is to Internal Medicine, and Gray's is to Gross Anatomy, Braunwald's is to Cardiology. It is probably easier to talk of the beach without mentioning water than to talk of cardiology without Braunwald's Heart Disease.
This is a very worthy reference resource.

Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B

Unique lyrical narrative voice
Balthazar B. is an aristocrat bewildered at every turn by life. His picaresque journey from Paris to Trinity College Dublin and visitations to country estates and among women of high and dubious social standing is hilarious to behold. The randy foil figure of Beefy may stand as one of the greatest comic figures since Shakespeare's Fat Jack Falstaff. The literary style of Donleavy is itself richly laden with lyricism and poetry and comedy. It is a uniquely pointillistic style in which brush strokes are applied to the canvas with precision and clarity in truncated and non-traditonal but accessible syntax. Like most truly great writers Donleany evokes all of the reader's senses in his work. He also succeeds in arousing sympathy, hilarity, tenderness, grief -- a full range of sensibilities that engage the reader. Each character is roundly drawn and speaks with a unique voice and range of experience. Donleavy's Ginger Man is named among the Random House Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century. He is a supremely talented story teller with an enchanting narrative style that will leave you wanting to read more. Don't miss this novel, The Destinies of Darcy Dancer, Gentleman and the Singular Man -- they are all pleasant and richly satisfying literary treasures.

A gem
A splendid book about one Balthazar B, gentleman at large. Donleavy's writing sparkles with wit, humor and charm, and yet he never shies from the experiences that make Balthazar (and all of us) human: the pursuit of sex and the loss of true love. Balthazar is no cardboard hero for whom everything goes right.

Touching, sad and funny
This book was my introduction to J. P. Donleavey and I didn't know quite what to expect. Early on the book had me laughing out loud, yet throughout there is a strong undercurrent of sadness.

The portion devoted to Balthazar's time at Trinity reminded me of both "Lucky Jim" by Kingsley Amis, and "The Water Method Man" by John Irving. Donleavy uses the academic setting to create situations with a tremendous amount of humor and a profound sense of loneliness and alienation simultaneously.

This introduction led me to pick up four more by Donleavy. The emotion of the book stayed with me for a long time afterward.

Whose Been Keeping This Book a Secret
I happened upon this book, and I am glad that I did. It's a gem, filled with lots of scientifically based information about how behavior affects health. It's not a typical "how-to" book, but the information is there. You'll see that it's not just our biology that drives us; we have the fate of our health in our hands. We can control the majority of the factors that lead to disease and early death. This book tells you how to make your life better and maybe live longer in the process. It's not dull reading either. The author tells relevant and interesting stories from his own life and sprinkles the data with surprising little stories about people whose names you'll recognize from all facets of life. A jolly good book. Why haven't the media been force-feeding this to us? Someone slipped up. This is good stuff.

An argument for a balanced life
What one should take from this book is that health means balance is all areas of one's life. We are social animals and obviously our emotional well-being influences our longevity. A great book!

Insightful and contemplative "must read"
Emotional Longevity explores the dimensions of health and well being in a unique and refreshing way. Though based on research, it offers a refreshing (and understandable) perspective differentiating it from other books of this genre. It clearly defines and illustrates how each of the elements affecting longevity play out in our lives and in the lives of our children. It juxtaposes science with vignettes, making it not only informative but compelling as well. It is an insightful and contemplative "must read."

This is the best of the best
Anyone who would like to put a few animals in the backyard for eggs or meat or milk or everything altogether, will save hundreds of headaches, and probably hundreds of dollars, by buying this book and taking Steven Thomas's suggestions seriously. There are now dozens of these kinds of books out there, and I own a number of them (including "Barnyard In Your Backyard" which is nowhere near as good as this) but none of them comes close to "Backyard Livestock" for practicality of advice, conciseness of expression, and comprehensiveness. I have sheep, chicken, etc., and this has been far more reliable than any competing manuals that I own or know of. You can't not get it! It's indispensable.

Great Starter Book!
To get information easily and quickly, this book is concise and informative. We bought this book when we first started our little farm and 10 years later are still referring to it! An excellent buy.

Great resource book!
This book was very beneficial in all aspects of raising small-farm animals. Great reference manual for beginners. I certainly listed this book in the resources directory of my new title, Farm Animals: Your Guide to Raising Livestock, because I felt it would be an awesome addition to my own farm related books!

Not good for the classroom
Given the previous high reviews of this book I was hoping that this might replace Grimal's and a cultural atlas in a college history course on Egypt. Sadly it cannot. The essays will interesting and focused still are too general in some areas such as women and religion where it seems that there is no change over time in Egypt. That simply isn't true. In other sections, change is suggested but it isn't explained. Overall too little time is spent on each subject to justify its separation from the whole. A good solid introduction to the basic chronology and traditional history is covered in only 20 pages! I was so disappointed in the book that I'm returning it for a refund. I have specific and general books on Egypt already and this adds nothing to them. On the bright side, if you like a very general book then you should like this one because it is organized by topic and has very nice images and decent maps (not as good as others I've seen however).

best book yet on Ancient Egypt
This is by far the best book I have yet found on the subject of Ancient Egypt. Generously illustrated and excellently written. A seductive, beautiful work that towers above the dozens of other major books I've read on Egyptian archaeology and ancient culture.

If I could only have one book on Ancient Egypt...
David Silverman, author of several fine books as well as Curator of the Egyptian Collection at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, has made a major contribution to the literature in this comprehensive, engagingly written and well-illustrated volume. I have to admit a bias, since I studied hieroglyphics in one of his classes at the University of Chicago a while ago. His enthusiasm and knowledge shine forth in this mature work, which draws on the talents of the best people in the field today. I would give this book a ten-star rating!

The only Christmas book you'll ever need!
My son was given this book by his German grandmother for Christmas, and it's the most interesting Christmas book I've ever seen. It explains everything kids need to know about where Santa Claus comes from - but in a modern approach: there are high-tech elves, Santa distributes presents in planes because his sleigh can't cope with the magnitude of presents anymore and parents have to buy some gifts for their children at the toy store because he doesn't have the facilities to make them.
I especially love the book's explanation of why many Europeans are visited by Santa on Christmas Eve (as was the tradition in my German family), and Americans and other nations open their gifts on Christmas morning - Santa does have to fly further from Finland, after all, so he doesn't get to the US until the middle of the night. Ingenious - my son will never be confused again!
The illustrations alone are worth a look, every time you open the book you'll see something new!

Santa Claus and his elves
This is my favorite christmas story. I have read it every Christmas for 20 years. The illustrations are wonderful. Everytime you read it you find something new in the pictures.

Best Santa book in universe
This is the best book our family has ever seen about Santa Claus!! I vote it ten stars, not just five. This book is truly off the charts for its cleverness, terrific illustrations, inventiveness and sheer Christmas joy. I do not know why some US publisher has not bought the rights and made it into the classic it deserves to be, and is in our family. My Son was given this book at his first Christmas. Both he and my daughter and I, their Mom, have enjoyed this book every year since then. I would love to be able to obtain more copies of it to hand down to my grandkids and so on. It gives very detailed and often quite funny "true" information about Santa and his whole village at the North Pole. It is quite an operation, believe me! Santa has his sleigh but also has a fleet of red airplanes with reindeer logos on them. The drawings are so full of detail and funny things going on that it keeps both kids and grown-ups exclaiming and laughing. For example, birds sit on elves' noses. Baby elves suck pacifiers. The elf band is playing "Ob-la-di, ob-la da"; the printer elves tie up their beards around their heads so they do not get them in the ink, and in the carpenter shop, there is a sign saying, "safety first." There are even elves who spray paint the toys. So hilarious, as a little animal watching this gets sprayed too. The elf children's classroom often was intently examined by my kids. The book is Scandinavian in origin I think, and that is why it is so hard to find now here in the USA. The outfits and scenery, houses and huts are Norwegian or Swedish, and the costumes have all sorts of decorative Nordic touches. Each elf seems to have a different personality. My kids always liked the picture of the elves getting ready for bed--in their bunk house they are bedding down, and one is reading the newspaper, one is watching a portable TV, and one is about to brush his teeth. The loner elf likes to sleep in a simple haystack--"to each his own," my kids would always chime in with the narrative. This book is so clever and if you can ever find it you will want to keep it forever. It has a humorous charm that even very tiny children will enjoy, and it will win your heart. It is unlike any other Christmas book I have ever seen in the US. My kids are now 19 and 16 and they still get it out every holiday season to enjoy the pictures and simple story once again. It is simply precious!

My first Jeeves
P.G. Wodehouse's CARRY ON, JEEVES, is a masterpiece of hilarity! Jeeves is Bertram (Bertie) Wooster's manservant in jolly old England. Jeeves is always there to get poor Bertie out of his farcical jams. This book was first published in 1925, but the comedy plays out just as well today. I especially love the variety of turns of phrases that pop up on every page. (Imagine being described by Bertie as: "As vague and woollen-headed a blighter as ever bit a sandwich."!) Each of the ten short chapters is another adventure, with the last adventure being told from Jeeve's own point of view. I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait to read the others in the series!

Classic Wodehousiana!
Martin Jarvis' reading of Carry On, Jeeves runs circles around Jonathan Cecil's reading of anything (for more on Cecil, see Psmith: Journalist). He simply embodies the characters of Bertie Wooster, Jeeves, Biffy, Corky, and all the cast (albeit with the same typical attempt at an American accent).

Carry On, Jeeves contains eight of the ten stories available in the print version (the remaining two stories appear on My Man Jeeves), so completists will want that, but for pure enjoyment, you can't go wrong with this. Even the titles Wodehouse writes are funny, my favorite being "The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy." They simply roll off the tongue.

The stories here include "Jeeves Takes Charge" (chronologically the first as it tells the story of Jeeves' entry into Bertie's life). The others, namely "The Artistic Career of Corky," "Clustering Round Young Bingo," "Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest" (about a young cousin of Bertie's who goes wild under his wing), and "Jeeves and the Hard-Boiled Egg" are all classics of the Wodehousian genre and show Jeeves at his problem-solving best.

This would easily appeal to the casual Wodehouse fan, and is perfect for long road trips or any other situation where a laugh is needed. Wodehouse exceeds all others in humor and, one assumes, will remain that way for centuries to come.

Now I know where they get all those ideas for sit-com plots!
This was a refreshing book to read. Funny and well-written, not only was it an introduction to English vernacular, but it seems Mr. Wodehouse was a huge influence on comedy writers today. Each chapter could have been an episode of any number of sit-coms. But, I don't want to downplay the value of this novel. I can't help but imagine what it was like to look at this as a new genre.

But, these "episodes" still aren't as stale as some of those viewable today in primetime. Most are unpredictable, and the situations are unique (somewhat due in part to the time period, but also because they are realistically presented.) All the characters are likeable, even though they each have a teeny bit of deviousness, but that makes them more human. Their funny and they aren't plastic. They aren't completely real, but they aren't completely paper-made either. They're just plain entertaining.

The last chapter of this book is the tip-topper of the whole novel. Just like a good show, it brings everything together. You wonder throughout just what Jeeves' angle really is, and in the end you find out. I can't wait to read another installment!

POTTER BEATRIX : STORY OF A FIERCE BAD RABBIT(EXPORT P/B
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (01 September, 1985)
Author: BEATRIX POTTER

Average review score:

A violent morality tale
"The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit" is one of Beatrix Potter's weirder children's books. The plot is set in motion when the nasty title character attacks another rabbit and steals his carrot.

This book is a violent and surreal morality tale. It's not one of my favorite Potter books. A warning to parents: gun violence is depicted in this tale.

Fierce Bad Rabbit
This is a very cute story about how being good and being bad has different outcomes. This would teach a very important lesson for young children to learn. The illustrations are also very cute, showing exactly what you'd picture the story being. The good, innocent rabbit is just sitting there with his little carrot, happy to have it to eat. A bad, fierce rabbit is hiding in the bushes, just waiting to pounce on the sweet, little rabbit. All of a sudden, he pounced! That poor sweet one had to go running and hide in a cave. Seeing what happens to the fierce, bad rabbit is very Beatrix Potter like. It is so sweet how it ends, how being good always works out and being bad isn't always going to go your way, no matter what you think.
~Camille

the fierce bad reader
i am a big fan of the fierce bad rabbit, as well as all of beatrix potters works. However, the main characters are better, ( i'm very fond of bunnies) and the outcome and plot are less distrubing than the whole rolly-polly pudding thing, and the patty-pan. Still, one must wonder what social allagorie does "the man with the gun afford". Buy this book, get the whole series, they really are very nice to read, and if you think it would be detrimental to your maturity, buy it for a younger sibling, nephew, niece, cousin, etc. and see if you can bring yourself to give it away. I bet you won't be able to, and if you can, than there is something big wrong with your head...
