for all time - the Lineman's Bible
This book was first printed in 1928, well after the trade first put on climbers. Since it's first printing it has been THE textbook for the lineman's trade. It has been used in virtually every apprentice program and was the companion of self taught linehands from the '30s on. Frequently updated, it remains the one place a linehand, beginner to veteran, can go for help. It has progressed with the technology of the trade, the regulations and codes, the materials, and the processes for doing very dangerous work in well thought out procedures that enable electric customers to maintain their service and even be unaware of the work of the power lineman.

Excellent reference for Journeymen and apprentices.
This book is THE comprehensive guide that no Line man should be without. It is also an excellent source of information for anyone working with distribution and/or transmission system operation, construction, and maintenance.

This book saved me $10,000 in a week
What a fantastic book. Even though many of the ideas are so simple we often forget about them. One of these simple ideas I applied to my business and I ended up saving myself just over $10,000 and all it took was three hours, a few telephone calls and a couple of short meetings. I'm busy working my way through all the other ideas - I've even given some of my staff certain chapters to read and see how they can apply it to our business.

Easy Math Lessons for the Overhead
I love using the overhead and I know it keeps my students attention. The book has 10 tranparences and 10 lesson plans with additional lesson possiblities listed for each lesson. I teach students with learning disabilities and this gives me an opportunity to make each lesson multileveled to reach each student in my classroom on their level. The punch-out numbers and manipulatives gives this book a bonus for me since there is not an extra cost of purchasing manipulatives to use with each lesson. Whether you teach students with or without disabilities this book will provide a fun way to teach math. Your class will enjoy the 1-100 transparency number chart that will not only help counting from 1-100, but also counting by 2's, 5's, 10's or any number family.

Living Under Powerlines -Imminent Danger-
Since there was not a review on this book, I felt COMPELLED to write one. This is a must read for anyone living near High-tension Powerlines or near a Power Substation. This book is well written, with documentation of events that everyone should know about. Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) have been in the news for many years. The implications of the danger of EMF's and the Health-cancer threat is just too great to ignore. In this book the author documents real life experiences of people who have experienced "SHOCKING" events that have occurred to them after High-tension power lines came through their properties. These people lived under or near these lines. One of the most "SHOCKING" (literally) was the fact that the owner was unable to paint his tin roof without getting shocked until he had run a chain down his pants leg to keep him grounded! Big Business has spent a great deal of time and money to cover-up stories like this. I live in a state where power companies are very big business. Not only are they big business they have the legislators on their side. Congress has given Utilities the power of "eminent domain" where they can build these high tension power lines where ever they please. The people in this book were affected by this law that allows Utility Companies to condemn land. The people in this book didn't want power lines on their property, but power lines they got. Some paid for these lines with their lives. When this book was first published in 1973, one of the major power companies in my state bought every copy of this book they could find. Today, this book is still hard to find in many of my State's Public Libraries even though the author's other books are readily available. Does this tell you something? Power Companies feel very threatened by this book? This alone should make everyone rush out and buy it. Read it, share it, give a copy to your local library, community planning committee, and congressmen - urge them to read it. It is definitely a keeper-

The orginial version (1973) has lots of "shocking" pictures, the updated version (1992) has a wonderful review by Stewart Udall with a 20 year follow-up on the families from the original, some of whom developed cancer.

If you liked this book, I would recommend reading several books by Paul Brodeur. "Currents of Death," and "The Great Power Line Cover-up."

A practical guide for affirming personal ministry
This is a great guide for the seeker or believer who has a heart to serve and needs a process to explore their personal uniqueness. The servant profile of passion, spiritual gifts and personality is a simple yet effective framework for facilitating a person to find pertinent ministry outlets. Having experienced the process personally, I found the design and flow of the course to be especially good, from the video vignettes to the huddle groups to the gift affirmation process, in which you have others help give perspective to your gifts. I also found the immplementation and leadership materials to be quite helpful in proposing and putting to work a gift-based ministry design in the local church. The only downside to the Network gift-based approach MIGHT be the "modernist" flavor that permeates the material. If you identify more with "postmodern" perspectives you might find Rick Warren's SHAPE process a bit more resonating. Overall though, a very good book that has had a signifigant impact in how churches are designing ministries and placing volunteers for service....I heartily recommend it.

Grow Disciples
Network is an amazing system and assessment tool that assists Christians in discovering and applying their spiritual gifts and talents to building God's Kingdom. These materials are definietly the means of growing transformed disciples who will transform the world through dedicated and enthusiastic service in God's Kingdom. This tool provides a three step process: 1) Discovery of an individual's Servant Profile which includes, spiritual gifts, Passion/area of minstry and personal work style, 2) Consultation and 3) Ministry placement. This system provides training modules for Teachers and Consultants and helps a church to define its minitry opportunitues for those looking to become more involved. The Leader's guide provides easy to follow teaching plans and the consultant guide gives the ins and outs of consultations with example phrases and detailed outlines. It provides a complete means of helping an individual understand his or her calling in God's Kingdom!

Discover this NOW
I just completed the class this book accompanies. This was a milestone event for my wife and me. Both of us were saying "No wonder I'm like this and you're like that." I would recommend this for you not only to find your place in church (which it can help you with), but also to find your place in life. This book can focus you in on your Passion (where you should be), your Gifts (what you should be doing) and your Personal Style (how you will be doing it). This book will shine a light on you. Stop fighting your innate makeup and tendencies. And figure out just exactly what you are and how God made you.

a longtime fan of Dr Millhuff
I first met Dr Millhuff in 1988 during a Revival Meeting in Hemet, Ca. His presence and God-given message was as powerful then - and I believe in much the same way this book is now.

He guides the reader through his impressionable years and talks of how he was impacted. He unapologetically explains that his twin brother was not affected in the same way by the same experiences. This was not explored further in the book, but it points out a great psychological truth -- we all develop diferently based on our individual interpretations of the same experiences.

Use this book to re-examine your early life and decisions!!

A "Soul-Searching" Primer
I first met Dr Millhuff in 1988 in Hemet, CA during a Revival Meeting. His God inspired message touched me then, and his soulful book touches me now!!

He looks into his childhood and examines his experiences and his emotional reactions to those experiences. This process is so vital to both spiritual & emothional growth that everyone should enjoy reading this book!!

MOVING STORY!
Through his skillful use of words, Millhuff tells a compelling story that captivates both heart and mind. It allows the reader to connect with the emotional pain of a young child and, as an outcome, to more adequately understand children who are unable to adapt to the rigid systems of their cultural environments. Though only one story, this narrative undoubtedly represents the experiences of many troubled children. Reading this record of Millhuff's perceptions of childhood events gave me new insight about and empathy for these children.

This book is recommended reading for my university students who are education majors. I feel that Millhuff's telling account will influence the way teachers view all children and encourage them to strive to meet the needs of each student in caring ways.

More Good Than Bad
This book really contributed to the seeker friendly evangelism and worship craze that is still prevalent in many megachurches in America. Thousands of church leaders have attended leadership conferences at Willow Creek designed to equip churches to reach out to secular people relevantly. While there are several problems I have with the Hybels approach in this book, in the end, I think more good than bad has come from the methodology and mentality proposed here, and hence, I'm giving the book a cautious 4 star rating.

Someone looking for an academic theology of evangelism will probably not be satisfied with this book. The book is heavily weighted toward practical application and personal empowerment, and this is quite deliberate. The Hybels model stresses individual evangelism both in daily living, and even within the institutional church. The Hybels model, as I've seen it practiced, can turn the entire church top to bottom into an evangelistic enterprise, with lay leaders and volunteers in the church doing most of the heavy lifting. This model naturally tends to work best within the context of churches that shun an extensive ecclesiastical heirarchy, and instead have a pastoral staff that believes in and even welcomes change, adaptability, and flexibility. This intense emphasis on preaching and ministry that are ultimately evangelistic in nature has resulted in astounding church growth in more than a few churches, and in this respect, the Hybels model is to be applauded. But it also comes with dangers as I will discuss below.

This book is loaded with practical application that Christians can almost immediately put into practice. In addition, the book offers helpful tips on sharing your faith in succinct and compelling ways, and really hammers home the theme of 'authenticity' and evangelism as a process, rather than the gospel raid approach that presses immediately for a decision and commitment to Christ without doing much of what is needed to truly resemble authentic and caring evangelism. These contributions are welcome and are things that evangelicals of all theological stripes should pay attention to and generally adopt. Hybels calls for flexibility in evangelism that is person and even situation specific, and while this might rub some people the wrong way, I do think a good case can be made that effective evangelism cannot be reduced to a standardized approach that refuses to interact with the uniqueness of each person we encounter.

Now for the bad stuff. Tops on this list is Hybels egregious paraphrasing of Scripture throughout much of the book. Hybels is blatantly guilty in here of recasting and rewording the Bible to make it fit the points he wants to make. I have long said that the tendency of evangelical preachers to minimize the importance of the actual words in Scripture through reworded paraphrases that may or may not be Biblically faithful is a direct assault on the notion that the Bible was divinely inspired not just in the ideas presented, but in the words used to express those ideas. It is impossible for me to understand how Hybels could so thoroughly engage in this practice if he affirms verbal plenary level inspiration. Either he doesn't affirm this, which is a big problem, or he does and he doesn't take it seriously, which is also a big problem. Either way, the reader should be extremely discerning when Hybels makes his arguments from Scripture by rewording what the Bible says so radically, and also speculating on what the Bible does not say and then uses these speculations as an integral part of his argument. Bad theology, bad hermeneutics, bad teaching.

The other major problem is the fact that Hybels, more then once, seems to imply that evangelism is at root, an activity powered more by human effort than the power of the Holy Spirit. Any book on evangelism that talks in great length about human action while giving the power of the Holy Spirit a passing nod is one that employs a theology that severely flirts with work-based religion. This is particularly dubious in Hybels' case since in his gospel summary section, he states (very correctly) that religion is about what people do to try to gain God's favor, while Christianity is about what God has already done that we could not do. In my view, what Hybels gets right here, he gets wrong throughout most of the rest of the book.

So it is a mixed bag, but as I stated at the beginning, because the book deals heavily with application, and since many of his application points are valid and very good, the book is more good than bad. However, I would strongly urge the reader to employ a heavy dose of discernment when reading this.

An eye-opening, reassuring and motivating book - for Britain
After I read the first three chapters of this incredible book, I rang the Christian book store where I bought it here in England, and told them I would buy the other six copies they had in stock! I gave these to my wife, to a couple church leaders, and a couple of the "less motivated" church members. They also captured the easily picked up insights about relationship building as a worthy way to assist the Holy Spirit in opening hearts, ears and minds to the saving love of Jesus Christ. The methods are not difficult to understand or to apply. The principles in this book are what the churches in England, Wales, Scotland, and all of Ireland need to put into practice. Your life, whether you are a Christian (yet) or not, will be positively affected by this book. I cannot praise it highly enough!

Relunctant to "Spread the GOOD NEWS?" Read this!
Bill Hybels does it again with yet another of his easy to read, easy to understand and apply to your life books with "Becoming a Contagious Christian." If you've ever felt that you weren't articulate enough to share the Gospel with unbelievers, this book is a great, great resource. Pastor Hybels outlines several different ways to evangelize to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone else you may encounter. His writing style is very friendly and easy to follow and makes you feel that you can share God's word too. According to Pastor Hybels, it doesn't have to be intimidating (which it can seem to be at times) and we, as Christians, aren't always going to be the person that actually leads someone to Christ, but we may be the one who introduces the concept of salvation, or the one who prays for that person's salvation. He also outlines the different types of evangelism styles, which I felt was very helpful to me. I very much enjoyed this book and would also recommend his Participant's Guide to go along with this. This book is a great topic for a small group discussion or Sunday School class as well. Very enjoyable book. I highly recommend it!

Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics: Overhead Transparencies

Review of Vector Mechanics for Engineers
This book is written with the assumption the reader understands statics prior to using this text. The author states repeatedly throughout the text that somewhat difficult ideas are obvious, and gives no further explanation as to the derrivation of his conclusions; often leaving the reader more lost than they started.
Sample problems are well laid out, yet do not prepare you for the level of understanding required for homework problems at the end of each chapter.
This book was used in a Sophomore college class and left the class feeling unprepared for subsequent Engineering courses requiring a firm understanding of this subject.
Altogether this book should not be used as a first attempt to understand statics unless the user has prior knowledge of statics.

how about a sol'n manual
this book is colorful and all, but it will be helpful if there is a sol'n manual 'cuz the sample problems are very easy and the hw are outrageously hard

Designed for the Student
One of the best, if not the best text book on fundemental structural analysis.

A beginners best bet.
