An ideal tool for teaching poetry to high school students.

Connections: Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Donald Gallo
Amazon base price: $12.40
Average review score:

An excellent collection of short stories for young adults
I am so pleased to see this book back in print. I first used this book in a summer school class for entering freshmen six years ago, and my students loved it. There are wonderful stories to be found here, from some of the best writers of young adult fiction in the business. Chris Crutcher's "A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune" is probably the best of the book (and far better than the movie "Angus"). There is also an absolutely first-rate rarity, the second-person point of view story, in Gordon Korman's hilarious "A Reasonable Sum." If you're a teacher looking for some contemporary short stories for teenagers, or you just love to read well-written stories, then "Connections" is a great find.

Review of Whaley
The tapes are very helpful if you have done the basic reading. These tapes are an excellent review tool. They lay out the bare structure of contracts where all the major issues are organized by topic. Obviously no one can cover everthing in detail on only four tapes, but if you are already somewhat familiar with the issues - these tapes by Whaley are great. I recommend them for reviewing for finals or as an everyday brushup.

Inspiring, beautiful and full of good tips
As a beginning pastelist, I found this book to be quite an inspirational journey. It showed me possibilities and beauty in a medium unfamiliar to most. I had a sense of being educated almost unconciuosly because I was so engrossed in the information and drawn into the beauty of this book. I highly recommend it as a reference tool and as a treat for the eyes.

Denys the Areopagite (Outstanding Christian Thinkers)
Published in Paperback by Continuum (August, 2002)
Author: Andrew Louth
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

One of the greatest Christian mystics
Louth's introduction to Denys is outstanding. It provides helpful insights into the thought of a Christian mystical theologian whose insights played a large role in the formation of the traditional Western Roman liturgy and whose insights are still foundational to Eastern Orthodox conceptions of liturgy and theology. It is a shame that it is out of print. See Denys' complete works: "The Complete Works of Pseudo-Dionysius" published by Paulist Press.

Ethel Jenner Rosenberg: The Life and Times of England's Outstanding
Published in Paperback by George Ronald Pub Ltd (1995)
Authors: Robert Weinberg and Bambi Betts
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Early years of the Baha'i Faith in Britain
Ethel Jenner Rosenberg was a painetr and miniaturist who in 1899 became the first native of England to become a Baha'i in that country. She had learned about it from Mary Virginia Thornburgh-Cropper, who was the first person in Britain to convert to this faith. Despite her resoundingly English-sounding name Thornburgh-Cropper was actually American.
Ethel Rosenberg went on to become a stalwart member of the growing British Baha'i community for the rest of her life, ensuring her place in history.
The book puts her life and experiences in context and is in effect a history of that new and growing community from the end of the Nineteenth Century through the first third or so of the Twentieth, and deals with a number of other significant figures as well

The Golden Age of Jazz: On-Location Portraits, in Words and Pictures, of More Than 200 Outstanding Musicians from the Late '30s Through the '40s
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (April, 1985)
Author: William P. Gottlieb
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $6.69
Collectible price: $26.47
William Gottlieb stumbled onto photography by default. As a young reporter covering jazz during the 1930s and 1940s, he discovered that the Washington Post couldn't be bothered to dispatch a staff photographer. Gottlieb took to lugging along his Speed Graphic and a generous supply of flashbulbs, and as he interviewed his subjects he took pictures of them as well--brilliant pictures, in fact. Many have become canonical images: who can think of Billie Holiday, for example, without visualizing Gottlieb's famous head shot? Likewise, his whimsical photos of Dizzy Gillespie have become bebop icons. Yet his group portraits are even richer, suggesting miniature narratives and then leaving it to the viewer to provide the ending. (Which of Ellington's sidemen, I want to know, won that poker game so assiduously witnessed by Django Reinhardt?) The Golden Age of Jazz collects more than 200 of these gems, along with an informative text by the photographer, and it's hard to imagine a better source of visual delights for a jazz fan.
