Elixir of Wit
To read any of Karen Elizabeth Gordon's books is to be happily drunk on words. By turns informative, giddy, erotic, hilarious, mysterious and wondrous, it is almost incidental that this and her other books are also penultimate authoritative sources on English language grammar, usage and meaning. Read "Out of the Loud Hound of Darkness" and any of her other books that you can get your hands on!

Wonderful front cover painting. Incisive documentary
A must-see cover design by Terence Kelleher. This one feature sets the book in a whole world of its own. I challenge anyone to read the contents, and not cry, and not consider their outlook changed.

Excellent insight into the world of Death Row
With a thought-provoking and attractive cover painting by Terence Kelleher, this book is the latest addition to a growing literature on the lives of the 2000 or so men and women awaiting execution in the United States. Composed almost entirely of accounts written by the men themselves, this makes a harrowing but life-affirming (ironically) read. It may well change the way you think.

Fascinating History
Neil Miller's done a great job of pulling together aspects of (western) gay history. I've read some of the sources for his lesbian chapters and he uses them intelligently to summarise main points. I assume he's does the same with the male stuff and material from other countries which was previously unfamiliar to me. His style is readable, succinct and balanced about how we look at the past from our current viewpoints.

One feature of the book which is particularly pleasing is his use of extracts from writings he's referred to in his central text. This adds a good variety to the voice of the work AND the extracts are long enough (two or more pages in length) to inspire further study.

I also like A) the pictures of famous historical figures, there's something particularly moving about them, (I never knew Willa Cather was so gorgeous!)

and B) the balance of genders and countries covered is better than average.

My advice - read it!

A GREAT SURVEY OF GAY HISTORY
If you are interested in history, I highly suggest this book. Marginalized for eons, gay people are now an integral part of history. Relegated to the backburner, or whispered about in history sources, gay people have come forward with a great history. Within this collection, there are heartaches and triumphs, but always searching for the ideal of equality one day. Another good thing about this book is that it includes non-Western gay and lesbian history as well, yet another subject ignored by the "mainstream" history. An incredibly transfixing and fascinating book, I couldn't put it down, and read into the late hours of the evening.

Out of the shadows : mystery animals of Australia

A top class Production
An absolutley excellent book, exploring a number of the "mystery" animals of Australia such as the Queensland Marsupial Tiger and the Thylacine. Each chapter has an extensive history of the beast, as well as eyewitness accounts and more. The author never becomes carried away with the subject and declares that such animals DO exist, but deals with it in an interesting and logical manner. A must for any cryptozoology fanatics, especially those from Australia!

Wonderful book of Fortean Animals, well illustrated
Horrified to see this listed as out of print ! I bought a copy in London at UnCon'99. Six mysteries of Australian and Tasmanian animals extinct or fortean in nature. Well written and very enjoyable. Many plates of the Thylacine and locations of sightings and well done illustrations of the various critters so dear to the hearts of armchair monster hunters everywhere.

The cover says it all
The uninhibited Chanukah dance that graces the cover of Serrotta's "picture book" invites you to sit down and spend the rest of the evening in the world he discovered. While some of the information is since outdated -- synagogues have been rebuilt, Jews from Russia moving westward changing the landscape -- you still taste the life he found behind the Iron Curtain.

If you are Jewish, this book reminds you that there is always hope, that the shtetl gave us great literature and tremendous inner strength.

If you are not Jewish, you will still revel in the stubborn life that hung in there through awfully dark days, preserving tradition against all odds.

Edward Serrotta's lens makes magic.

The Best Book Yet That Tells a Story with Pictures
This is a sensational book of photography. Why? Edward Serotta, the photographer, displayed the life of Jews after the Holocaust in an interesting and unique way. Buy looking at these pictures, Serotta tells the story of the lives of people from Bulgaria to Romania. By looking at the book, one gets the feeling that the culture and religion of the Jewish people in Central Europe remains and flourishes. However, it still seems as though the marking of the Holocaust hangs around the lives of people who live in Europe. In addition, Edward Serotta gives a substanial amount of information about what he encountered when he explored the countries. All of his writing is to the point and is intruiging to read. Overall, I feel anyone who wants to get a good idea of live after the war in Europe must read this book.

Not for Professionals Only
What a wonderful book for professionals and lay persons, as well. Each chapter gives one Counselor's perspective of the impact Quaker practice has had on their work as a Pastoral Care provider. I used it as a perfect way to end my day over the period of a couple of weeks. Whether you are interested in Pastoral Care, or are a Friend interested in how our Religion is relevant in today's world, this book is a welcome addition to available literature.

Ground Breaking Book
Ten years in the making, this book is the first one to describe pastoral care and counseling from a Quaker perspective. The authors of the various chapters are pastors, pastoral counselors, family therapists, social workers, among others, all of whom do their work from a spiritual, Quaker grounding. The title comes from the way in which Quakers often find God in the silence. From this "silent center" pastoral care flows out and returns.

For those unfamiliar with the beliefs and practices of Friends, a brief introduction will provide guidance. As you read further, you may be moved by the stories, informed by the ways our faith and our work can intersect, surprised at the courage and love expressed by highly trained persons, and inspired to think about your own vocation.

Excellent book of birds and pictures and poems for children.
I am an early childhood teacher in Queens. I have used "Out of the Words of Birds" book in my classroom. The children enjoyed the colorful photos and the funny rhymes. They became familiar with all kinds of birds. When we took a trip to the bird aviary in Flushing Meadow Park they were able to recognize the birds from Mr. Goldfarb's book. In our performing arts show the children will be singing Robin in the Rain.

a great book for kids
children of all ages enjoy it. adults do too

Tragedy, and Reconciliation Spanning Three Generations.
When Harry Beech refers to his fiancee as "She's out of this world." he reveals a happy conclusion to a life wrought with the kind of unspoken trauma not often made public. Although growing up in and inheriting monetary affluence, he has strained relationships with both his father, a physically disabled WWI veteran, and his daughter, child of his deceased wife. Emerging from a labyrinth of personal crisis, in the backdrop of the 20th century, Harry Beech does manage to mend his life and find some degree of lasting happiness. This work is deeply moving in a way that causes one to reexamine the "constants" which ordinarily typify modern life.

A powerful, brutal history of a 20th Century family
Graham Swift is a proven master of the brooding British drama and he continues here with a history of a family spanning several decades, wars and generations. Swift plumbs the depths of parental guilt, photographers' responsibility and terrorism. You emerge from this book battered but feeling a bit more clear about life in general.

The Shaman's Journey
This book, written by well known religious scholar I.P. Couliano, provides a wonderful background to the shamanic journey and how it can be found within all societies. He does a very nice cross cultural survey of Shamanism (and relatd concepts) in the early part of the book, showing the similarities of belief in the Americas, Siberia, Melanesia and elsewhere, as well as in Africa and Australia. From there he goes on to show the otherworldly journeys of the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Chinese Taoists, Buddhists, Iranian mystics, Greek Medicine Men and Hebrew Qabbalists. Remarkable intellectuals and visionaries fill out the last couple chapters, including Neo-Platonic philosopher Plotonius, the Prophet Mohammad and Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy. Over all, this is perhaps the greatest non-culture specific survey of the Shamanic journey available. I strongly recommend that anyone interested in Shamanism, religious experiences and mysticism in general check out this book. Considering how widely varied Shamanism is (incorporating everything from Siberian and Polynesian religions to the ecstasies of Voudon and Santeria to Sufi mysticism and beyond), it might be a good beginning book.

WOW!Yes with capital letters!
WOw!This is very important to read, especially that this was Culianu's last book to be published. WHen he wrote it, he was receiveing threating phone calls from somebody(?), and if you think a little bit.. Out of this world....hmmm? What does that mean??It necessarily means that he knew that he was going to die?Well if you want to know more about Couliano's death(the first case in USA of a teacher killed in this way) read Ted Anton's book. Anyway, this book is a must read for anybody interested in the meta's(metaphysics, metempsychosis, etc)or in the study of religions .
