The Brave Lengths of Love
This book was one I could not put down. I was deeply impressed with the courage of both mother and daughter to deal with each other honestly and openly, and then to share their discoveries with the rest of us. In this true story, we see the deep pain and hurt, as well as the joy that comes from such discoveries. I am thankful to Martha and her mother Marcy for sharing their story. I am passing this book along to many others I know, for the wisdom it contains.

An Outstanding Book
OUR DAUGHTER MARTHA deals with a family's difficulties as they struggle to understand their daughter's journey to acceptance of herself as a lesbian. The book expresses the author's deepest feelings and fears in an honest attempt to help other parents understand and work through their concerns for gay and lesbian children. It is an interesting, thoughtful, and inspiring book.

An Eye-Opener
I've always harbored a subconscious guilt whenever I thought about wolves in North America...I knew we'd trumped-up the danger they presented to us, in order to rid the wilderness of their threat to our fat, stupid livestock. Meanwhile we systematically slaughtered their age-old prey, leaving them to starve or become criminals. The clear, poignant and often beautiful writings collected in this book helped me understand consciously what that universal guilt is...and what I feel I must do to redeem my part in it. I must support programs to preserve what Wilderness is left, and return to it the species we have so ruthlessly extirpated. (Wait 'till you read what we did! And for how long! Yipes!) And while teaching me all this, John A. Murray reminded me how wonderful a writer, say, Aldo Leopold is...or introduced me to Edward Hoagland (WOW...thought he was a painter or something. He sure can write!) or Farley Mowat (Knew he wrote. Never knew how well!) Well worth reading!

A great collection of contemporary writings on wolves.
Out Among the Wolves combines writings from some of the best known contemporary writers on wolves in one book. Every essay combines facts with great writing. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about wolves, for the love of them, or knowledge

EXCELLENT BOOK!
This book is extremely well-written with the elementary student in mind. It is both fun and fact-filled! The kids don't even know they are learning! I am an Enlgish teacher and I used this book in my class with great results. It gave me a week's worth of activities and discussions. It is a great preparatory tool for a field trip and also includes a delicious and easy recipe for ice cream- and clean-up is a breeze! The kids absolutely loved it! I will use it every year and I even amaze my friends with my homemade ice cream! Keep writing Andy Murphy!

What's not to love about dairy farming?
A concise, informative & amusing book that earned an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up from my preschoolers! From a teacher's perspective, the text reads easily and keeps the children's focus (no easy feat with a group of 5 year olds). From the child's perspective, the ice cream making activity was a huge hit (& easy enough for each child to do with minimal assistance), and being able to outwit your parents in dairy trivia (what is a flink?) is fun! I bought the book to support a science unit lesson plan & it was such a hit that we've ended up planning a field trip to a local dairy farm in the Spring. I'm very pleased with this excellent addition to my classroom library.

Out From This Place
Have you ever wanted to learn how hard it is to be a black slave in the 1860s? Well you need to read, Out From This Place. Easter (the main character) escapes from the Confederate soldiers to the Phillips plantation. There she finds Rose (bestfriend) who then takes her in. The next night they gather a whole bunch of slaves including Ray (the "leader") and Jason (Easters "son" who she has taken care of since he was a baby) to the Yankee Islands where they can be free. When they get to the islands they are transported to the Williams plantation to work. Their cabins are a mess but they make good money (a silver dollar a week thats good for a slave) and get to keep the land that they work on after the war. Ray teaches Rose and Easter how to read and write. Soon after that a teacher comes to the plantation and asks if Easter would like to go to an all black school in Philadelphia. To find out what happens next you have to read the book. I really liked this book a lot because it gave me a lot of insight on how it was to cope with being free and not being treated fairly. I really enjoyed this book and I hope you will to.

Awesome
Oh my god! This is the best book you can imagine, it tells a true story of bravery and courage. Its about a young girl named Easter who runs away with her friend Obi, after leaving Jason behind, she vows to go back and get him. When she first meets him, he says he's gonna tell the mistress that Easter is back, but after, he willingly goes along. To find out what happens, read Out From this Place, the best book ever!

Funny and poignant. A great little book.
Maybe I like this book because I recognized so many of the things that have also happened to me, with a similar college background in New Haven, then moving to an island in Washington and trying to "fit in" among the reserved and elitist locals. In his case the island was Bainbridge, in mine it is Orcas. The author seems to have made the adjustment to the wet cold weather and the cold reception rather well. His warm sense of humor and training in the colder winters of the East may have had a lot to do with it. Most of the chapters are short.. a few pages.. and will leave you with a smile.

I wish I could write like this; I'd love to tell my own story, but it wouldn't be as funny.

The Pacific Northwest with a Sense of Humor
A thoroughly entertaining book. Excellent first-read for a Seattle newcomer, as am I. Provocative descriptions of the mountains (especially Rainier!), water, towns, people, animals. He writes beautifully, and his words paint clear, wondrous pictures. I missed my bus stop twice when I was buried in this book. I bought copies from second-hand bookstores in the Seattle area and sent them to my mom, daughters and friends.

absolutely captivating!
i've read several novels about afganistan and this one is by far the best!

Amazing book at an amazing time
This is an incredibly interesting way to see Afghanistan. So much of what we all know of the country is through a biased, multimedia eye. The author takes us on journey through a much misunderstood, often maligned way of life. To make it even more enthralling, he takes us there through the eyes of one of its own.
I can't wait for the sequel.

LEST WE FORGET: Should be in all high school libraries
This book tells of German prison camp life during World War II, and how our service men were treated. I am proud to know Norman Peterson, one of the men telling the story.

Start reading this one long before bedtime!
This fast-moving account is hard to put down. Fortunately, its 148 pages are possible to read in one night. The four main characters introduce each other as they describe their months in Stalag Luft 6, and an 800 mile death march ended by liberation on April 26, 1945. Photos put a reader "next door" so one feels the P.O.W.s are lifelong acquaintances. I am a wiser, more grateful American after this good read.

STEAMY ROMANCE! WOW
Harlequin Intimacies Candace Schuler Out of Control

Originally printed as Harlequin Temptation #648. Blaze series. "Being without a man for eight years had left her hungry, but Andrea Wagner was prepared to starve unless she could be in control--on or off the job. Then Jim Nicolosi joined her construction team. He had the slow hand of a fine carpenter, the body of Adonis...and an appetite for Andie that had to be satisfied. He wanted her in his arms, out of control. And she wanted to be there.

THIS IS A SUPER SEXY BOOK! HAs a lady contractor as lead- different original story with hot chemistry and good suspense!

This book is a good one. It sizzles from cover to cover. If you like Harlequin's Blaze line you love this one.

Out of Eldridge Street

A Depression Era Childhood Revisited
Abandoned by his mother at the age of seven, Rabbi Harold Swiss lived in poverty with his grandparents, surviving on the few pennies his grandfather earned as a beggar with no legs. Times were hard. It was cold in the winter. And young Harold was often hungry. But he was loved. And his life was rich with the rituals of the synagogue and his growing understanding of the world around him.

Rabbi Swiss writes with passion, forcing the reader to feel the emotions of young Harold as he yearns for his mother, studies Judaism, and turns his eyes to the very real human beings who make up his community. I can never forget the hunchback outcast who delivered coal but had once been a concert pianist in Russia, the communistic rhetoric of the agnostic in the tea room which served as place to socialize and escape the dreary streets, the Negro superintendent who taught young Harold to box as well as a valuable lesson in humanity.

These were the days before even the rudiments of welfare, and if families couldn't pay the rent, they were forced to live right out on the street with their furniture, shivering in the cold while still trying to keep their dignity. Young Harold was one of the fortunate ones because there was always a roof, if nothing else, over his head. The tight-knit community believed in charity though. And no matter how poor they were, there was always a bit of soup or a piece of bread for the needy.

Against this background, young Harold grew and observed the world with the wonder of youth and the eyes of compassion. He had a spark of rebelliousness too. He shocked the community when he diverted from his prepared bar mitzvah speech. He stole some money that the mob had hidden and bought himself treats. He had sexual yearnings as he grew into manhood.

The book could have used some more careful editing, but this is minor criticism. There's lessons in humanity on every page as well as rich and well-developed characters. The story captured a neighborhood and a time in history that is unknown to most people and I wish it could be made into a screenplay in order to bring that particular era in focus.

Recommended

A poignant tale of life on the Lower East Side of New York.
I agree with the review from Aufbau magazine, which said: Out of Eldridge Street, by Rabbi Harold Swiss, teaches us the lesson that to be a good Jew it is necessary to not only study the Torah and Talmud and pray three times daily, but to practice that which we learn from the Torah and care about those around us, regardless of the color of their skins or their religion.
