1998 Tax Guide for College Teachers and Other College Personnel: For Filing 1997 Tax Returns (Serial)

A Classic
Bernstein's series of books are the best tax guides of any sort that I have encountered. They would be useful to any taxpayer but are absolutely essential for academics. Even if you don't want to do your own taxes, the books help you understand how to reduce your tax liability. He only publishes new editions when there are major changes in the tax law, so sometimes a few years pass before a new edition comes out.

terrific resource for sabbaticals
Back in 1991-92, my husband and I went to Japan for a sabbatical. At that time, the 1992 edition of the Tax Guide was an invaluable help to us. The amounts which can be used for deductions each day, simply because you eat and work in another country, are very surprising indeed. We saved $9,000 that year, largely because of deductions outlined in this book.

In August we shall be leaving for another sabbatical, this time in India. There is no question that we will leave the Tax Guide with our tax preparer again just as we did previously. The economic benefits are too great to lose. Most tax accountants are unaware of the deductions allowed college professors during sabbatical leaves. This book outlines them succinctly.

This is the best tax guide yet.
I must say, I was weary of plunking down my money, but with thier money-back guarantee, I figured I'd give it a shot. This is the best tax book I've read. It was concise, yet very readable and easy to understand.

IRAs, 401(k)s, and Other Retirement Plans: Taking Your Money Out
Published in Paperback by Nolo Press (November, 2000)
Authors: Twila Slesnick and John C. Suttle
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $1.25

IRA's, 401(k)s & Other Retirement Plans, by financial specialists Twila Slesnick and John C. Suttle, is a solid self-help legal look at a critical back-end issue that most of us blissfully ignore until we absolutely must confront it. The authors themselves admit it is not a compelling page-turner, but rather a comprehensive resource that at some point should prove indispensable to everyone with a retirement plan. They describe the various plans available--including Roth IRAs, to which an entire chapter is devoted--focusing on distribution rules, associated taxes, and potential penalties. They offer details on early distributions used to pay higher-education expenses or health-insurance premiums (which are not subject to taxes, under certain explicit conditions), distributions you must take during your lifetime (when they begin, how they're computed, what happens if your beneficiary changes), and distributions made after an account holder dies (largely concentrating on administrative procedures that could help you avoid unnecessary financial loss). Helpful appendices include relevant IRS forms, notices, and schedules as well as life-expectancy tables. --Howard Rothman

Great guide is lacking direction for clueless investors
Hey, let me be the first to say that Nolo publishing puts out great books that help sort out the world of legal mumbo-jumbo. I own three of their books and am very happy. So, now I am happy to find out that they offer this comprehensive guide on retirement plans which I am very interested in. The problem is that they give you the whys and whats but not the hows. Enter the 401(k) MarketBuster strategy. This strategy has given me a tested, successful method of maximizing my investment returns with a very simple strategy. If you are looking for the whys and whats like I usually like to do, get Slesnick and Suttle's book. If you want a quick primer on how to grow your retirement money faster than everyone else, then pick up the 401k MarketBuster. If you are like me and want to know everything I need to know about what is happening with and how to grow my hard-earned dollars, get both!

A must for any IRA or 401k owner
Very well written and easy to read with lots of examples. I found this a great reference and is a must own for anyone with an IRA or other qualified plan. Great for anyone looking to know the tax rules and distibution methods of their retirement plans.

Good Reference Work for a "Taxing" Subject
IRS rules for withdrawing money from IRAs are pretty complicated. This book, like others from Nolo Press, offers very specific coverage of these rules. I was looking for information on how IRAs can relate to Living Trusts, and I found it here. You have to pay attention, but the book is written in easy-to-understand English as opposed to legalese.

Excellent resource for anyone working in performing arts
Written in a breezy, easy-to-understand style, this book is a must for anyone--actor or otherwise--who works in the performing arts field. The author understands the unique nature of their jobs and how it relates to taxes, deductions, etc. It will save you money in the long run. The only problem I have is that it only comes out every two years.

Don't Die Broke: Taking Money Out of Your IRA, 401(k), or Other Savings Plan - and Creating Lasting Retirement Income

Don't Die Broke: How to Turn Your Retirement Savings into Lasting Income, by personal-finance writer and financial-education specialist Margaret A. Malaspina, offers a fresh take on one of today's hottest money matters by outlining ways to tap most effectively into the retirement nest egg that you're currently nurturing. While most such guides concentrate on actually amassing those future fiscal resources in the first place, Malaspina shows instead how to maximize what you're (hopefully) already building so you'll (hopefully) always have what you need. "Most people find themselves making decisions about retirement plan distributions with little guidance," she writes. "Few people understand the consequences of their choices--or, indeed, what choices they have." In clear, highly focused chapters, she offers solid suggestions for creating a lasting retirement income, lowering potential taxes, and building an estate worth passing along. --Howard Rothman

Don't believe the subtitle
The subtitle is "Taking Money out of your IRA, 401(k), or other savings plan-- and creating lasting retirement income, but there's precious little useful how-to here. There's basically one chapter (9) that deals with the details of setting up a withdrawal plan and the advice boils down to "go find an investment advisor". Most of the book is spent explaining 401ks, IRAs, workplace plans, etc.

It's my own fault, though. Next time I'll read the TOC before buying!

This book is a lifeline...highly recommend it
Like so many of my friends, my husband's and my focus has been all about reaching some magic number that would say, ok,now it's safe to retire without going broke... We gave not a thought to how we'd manage the money afterwards. But then we began to hear rumors ... you must do this, you can't do that, and panic set in. Finally, after reading Ms. Malaspina's book, we understand what's really going on (better than we did after talking to our accountant!). I've given this book to friends and even a cousin who was 69-1/2 and didn't have a clue about the need to start drawing on certain retirement savings. This book should be required reading for anyone over 50. Thanks, Bloomberg Press!

Excellent Treatise On A Very Complicated Topic
Margaret Malaspina has done an incredible service to the taxpaying world in her book. As a Certified Public Accountant, I can attest to fact that dealing with the Internal Revenue Service Code is an extremely difficult process. She has consistently dealt with this complicated and very confusing subject and de-mystified it in a way that heretofore has never been done. As more and more assets of American citizens are finding their way into retirement accounts, the timing of this book is perfect. What might appear to be some type of simple election or investment decision can backfire in terms of significant additional taxes. She attempts and succeeds in identifying these problems and proposing appropriate solutions. I have read it thoroughly and have recommended it to my clients and friends.

Don't buy!
The "holdings" and facts in this hornbook are wrong. Cases such as Harris and Clark contain horrible inaccuracies. Hope this helps.

Do NOT buy this hornbook!
Apparently the editor of this masterpiece is blind as a pig. My professor (LLM N.Y.U) suggested nutshells, etc., but, as her eyes narrowed, clearly stated, "Do not use the hornbook. It is wrong." She then stated, "It is just wrong." Always skeptical, I decided to check for myself. I reached the same conclusion after twenty minutes of reading. The facts (monetary amounts) in Clark are wrong. The "holding" in Harris is totally irrelevant, and the "holding" in Glenshaw Glass is downright laughable ... and wrong. Hope this helps.

My students have found this book helpful
My students have generally found this book helpful. The diagrams are wonderful and often help people visualize very complex tax transactions. I also think the book does an excellent job of explaining very difficult material. Other reveiws have indicated that there are erros in this book. It does appear that there is a typo in the Clark case, but I have not noticed more than the usual number of typos in this book. In addition, contrary to the statements of other reviewers, I think the discussion of both Glenshaw Glass (I am not sure what is laughable about the book's presentation of the holding in the case) and Harris are on target.

My advice is buy the book if you want some added help with Federal Income Tax, but use it as a reference, not as a bible. Also realize that Tax Professors often disagree about tax law, and about the merits of various cases, that is what makes law fun.

ditto
the tape wasn't too bad, and its somewhat useful for some of the concepts, but there's been major revisions and shame on Gilbert for not updating and selling this ancient version

The Gilbert tapes are in general a bit inferior to the sum and substance tapes, the recordings have slightly lower production quality, many of the professors have tics that are very annoying when transferred to tape. Gilbert also tends to be shorter which means less material gets covered and often more perfunctorily.

it was recorded in 1995!!!
Never buy an income tax study guid that old, esp for $45+. The lecture itself is reasonably thorough and author's voice was acceptable, but half the information was outrageously out of date. Having said that, I used it to catch up on income tax stuff in preparation for a corporate tax class, and that worked out okay.
